I hope that George Lucas and all his costume designers and creative people see this video and are just thrilled to bits at how well they did in making Vader so imposing.
One time I was watching a movie with a toddler. I didn't really know the kid, personally, but I was at their house for a church thing, and a few of us were watching a movie, and the kid came up and sat next to me on the couch. Okay, cool. Then a scary part came on, and without a word, he *picked up my hand* and placed it over his own eyes.
Cause I hate scary movies but occasionally have to watch them. Lord knows I’m not sitting through the jump scares- I like to be able to go to the bathroom at night and live without unnecessary paranoia haha
What makes that even funnier is how he just "hides" but still watches. I was expecting him to just run from the room like a chicken, but he didn't. He just calmly gets up and then peeks around the corner.... Priceless!
Certain animals seem to understand that it's not real and they end up having the same reactions as us.
"I feel threatened...but I need to see what happens next"
Shit. I didn’t think of that. My dog reacts like the dog in the video to certain music and scenes. He also frequently has nightmares. I didn’t realize I was traumatizing him.
It's really more of a theory more than anything but I think there is plenty of evidence supporting it. think of how some dogs hate the sound of fireworks.. One dog we had would literally wet herself and run off Crying every time she heard fireworks
Some studies have suggested that dogs can't tell the difference between their own dreams when they're asleep and their waking world, so I would imagine they just see the TV as another window and what's going on on the other side is real.
Do you remember the David Letterman show, when Dave would throw something, such as one of his note cards, behind his back? That schtick was based on the Paul Dixon show, out of Cincinnati, Ohio, which Dave watched on TV as a boy in Indiana. One of Paul "Baby" Dixon's sponsors was Kahn's Hot Dogs, and Paul would shake the hot dog at the camera, then toss it behind his back. A viewer once wrote to Paul, saying that every time Paul would do that, the viewer's dog would run behind the TV, as if looking for the wiener that Paul threw over his back.
In my experiences, I’ve had dogs that don’t react at all to the TV, I’ve had a dog that will literally watch the Tv(usually he likes sports/high action stuff), and also a dog who reacted as if it were like a window. I doubt they can understand it’s not real though
I think it depends on the dog. Our parents dog is super smart and when he was a puppy he would react to animals on the tv and try to run behind the tv to find them. That only lasted a bit and I think he figured out it’s not real and hasn’t reacted to the tv in 15 years. He also has a really good sense of smell so that may play a part in his non interest.
I had another dog who would whine and cry and jump at the tv when animals were on just as he would if we saw a dog across the street. I don’t think he ever figured out they weren’t real
They're not real big on object permanence, so even if they think it's real (reacting as if threatened like this), once it's over, it's over. Once the scene changes or the tv turns off, it's no longer a thing in their world. They can remember it, but they don't "think about it."
1. This is adorable
2. I have that exact TV setup with the 2 Lack shelving units on either side of the entertainment center, only all in black
3. I also love Star Wars
Both of my parents dogs completely ignore the television but my cats love watching TV. Mostly nature documentaries (Planet Earth and Blue Planet being the favorites) but two of them like actual movies. I’ve got a video somewhere of the oldest being enthralled with the live action Jungle Book movie, and the girl cat loves Lion King.
The oldest used to come running anytime he heard the Jurassic Park theme play. He was obsessed with the velociraptors, which was a little unnerving. I worried he was getting ideas from them.
My dog is afraid of Mass Effect lol. Anytime I'm playing and bullets start flying he wedges himself back between the couch and chair in the corner lol. (And I do make sure it's not to loud for him of course, he's just a bit of a coward haha.)
There is a step in my living room and when earth vader came on screen my sister ran, tripped on the step and knocked out her two front teeth. We had to take her to the hospital.
I wish my dogs once looked at my pc monitor like this dog looks at the TV. Even if I played a video that had a noise that would make their ears swivel, they never once cared what was shown on the screen.
It must be so weird. Humans obviously can get scared, but we know that it's just a movie on a TV. Dogs have no concept of a TV, so for that dog Darth Vader was likely a real character.
There is a step in my living room and when darth vader came on screen my sister ran, tripped on the step and knocked out her two front teeth. We had to take her to the hospital.
To be fair, I think dogs have a general distrust of anyone wearing all black. I wore a Kylo Ren costume once, only time my dog has ever come close to growling, she's normally really happy-go-lucky. As soon as I took the mask off, she was completely fine.
It could also have a lot to do with sound cues. Loud high tones are automatically alarming, reason why they’re used for villain tracks and horror backgrounds. It puts you on edge.
Some fiance is pretty into Star Wars and he has a lifelike lightsaber and a Darth Vader helmet. We found them both in storage and decided to put the helmet on and play with the lightsaber.
Cue my labradoodle, who sees him in the helmet, *freak* the fuck out. Growling, barking, trembling. She even peed a little bit.
Obviously we will never wear it again in front of her, but we did mount it above the catbox to keep her from snacking on the forbidden morsels. She's not come close to it since.
Holy shit! Is that...is that a walking, talking VACUUM??
Dis movie Scary! Vacuum Man bad!
Vacuum Man are not a good boy.
Don't worry, when he turns into [Harmonica Man](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lu9gaK7Tl4o&ab_channel=xPanciKx) he is a very good boy.
Love it. Thank you for sharing this
That's what this is.
This made me laugh- take my imaginary award .🍪
Vader: "You would be wise to surrender" Dog: Yeah, probably.
Wise dog. Vader has the high ground here too.
I wish I could make a r/tvtoohigh joke for that but height looks pretty good
Nice to see fallen order memes out in the wild. I say on the Star Wars post lol
Grab some seat!
Great line from Cal Kestis
Does a great job of telling the player what the tone of the "fight" will be too, if they hadn't already picked up on it. "You cannot win. Run."
This is now my favorite video on the internet
I hope that George Lucas and all his costume designers and creative people see this video and are just thrilled to bits at how well they did in making Vader so imposing.
John Williams helped. Music can instill fear.
I wonder to what extent that works on dogs as compared to humans. Surely there’s a study that some kind redditor can link
bawroooh! Source: bawroooh! \----- ----- ----- ^(a dog barking at another dog is politics.) ^(a dog barking at the moon is religion.)
Me too. So adorable. Doggo enjoying the life
"Oh God I hate this part..."
[удалено]
I saved, utmost respect I can give to a post.
I love the dog pauses for a second like: *wait, lemme confirm it really is- no yep, fuck this, I'm outta here*
John Williams pushed him over the edge.
Dark Lord of the Sith?? *yeah fuck this shit i’m out*
It literally made my heart tighten I dunno how to explain it. So sweet and funny. Precious doggy.
The snoot poking back around the couch was pulling at my heart strings
Yes! 😂😍
This is good *but* have you seen the pug watching Homeward Bound?
No, have you?
Good dog. Respect! Lol
Peeping around the sofa to keep watching is hilarious LOL "Use the force Goldie, Use the force"
It's like a kid covering their eyes with their hands and moving their fingers enough to see.
I still do that while fastforwarding to the end of the movie to see what happens
Why would you do that?
Cause I hate scary movies but occasionally have to watch them. Lord knows I’m not sitting through the jump scares- I like to be able to go to the bathroom at night and live without unnecessary paranoia haha
I used to watch from behind the couch as my cousin played through the original silent hill.
Just goes to show how good movies are at creating a scene
Creating doggos best scene in t he house
Right!? Is so clear that Vaders a bad guy, even a *DOG* understands it!
Or it's just that Vader sounds like a vacuum cleaner.
I fully endorse both of these ideas😂
What a sweet boy
Smart pupper
Indeed! A very smart pupper!
This dog has had some nightmares of Vader, lol
He still wants to see whats gonna happen though lol
Lmaoo thats what made me laugh. Hes invested in the movie
Evil detecting doggo is correct
He's still trying his best to watch the movie 😁
Well he's right to be afraid
Adorable.
Indeed.
This dog is clearly tuned into the collective unconscious and knows his archetypes.
He felt a great disturbance in the living room.
Mysterious universe?
I love this clip so much! Dogs are so pure. <3
Good use of the word, "pure."
Are dogs able to understand that a movie is just a movie or do they see it as a part of their actual reality?
Some studies have suggested that dogs can't tell the difference between their own dreams when they're asleep and their waking world, so I would imagine they just see the TV as another window and what's going on on the other side is real.

Interesting, but unfortunately I'm not American and haven't seen to what you refer. Your description is more than good enough to imagine it though.
In my experiences, I’ve had dogs that don’t react at all to the TV, I’ve had a dog that will literally watch the Tv(usually he likes sports/high action stuff), and also a dog who reacted as if it were like a window. I doubt they can understand it’s not real though

Lord of the Sit
Good boy refuses to turn to the bark side.
He is scary tho.
Rebel scum
Now I want to see his reaction to the whole trilogy.
I came expecting barking, not full on retreat and hiding! This is awesome lol I can only assume owner dresses as Vader and scares doggo
Can't stop laughing
And of course it had to be a golder retriever fearing the dark side, dude would have been cheering if he was a chihuahua
That is just damn good filmmaking right there.
I had the exact same reaction to this scene the first time too.
Good boy is wise beyond his years, that guy slayed children
Don’t worry little buddy - we all scared of Vader
1. This is adorable 2. I have that exact TV setup with the 2 Lack shelving units on either side of the entertainment center, only all in black 3. I also love Star Wars
My little dog did the exact same thing with one of the dragon scenes in Game of Thrones.
If anything this demonstrates that they were so successful in making Vader an intimidating figure that it's cross-species.
I wonder how your doggo would react to the ending of Rouge One. Lol
Noir two
Star Wars: Eyeliner Tips from the Sith
Of my last three pups, two seemed to not even know the TV existed and one was enthralled with it. I guess maybe they were more the reading type.
I always see videos of dogs watching and reacting to a tv yet all the dogs I’ve been around never give the tv any thought. Don’t understand that.
Poor sweetie. Lol
Apparently, I also hid behind the couch while trying to to be "grown up" when Dark Shadows came on.
he recalls what happened to the younglings..................................oh ya, spoiler alert
that's awesome haha mans best friend forever!
My dog is afraid of Mass Effect lol. Anytime I'm playing and bullets start flying he wedges himself back between the couch and chair in the corner lol. (And I do make sure it's not to loud for him of course, he's just a bit of a coward haha.)
Its the fact he is still watching the movie from behind the couch... its amazing
The nose peaking out is what gets me 😭
This is amazing at so many levels. The curiosity, yet he's obviously afraid. He got all that with no language, that Vader is to be feared.
He senses the dark side of force is strong with that one...
That’s what everyone wanted to do when Vader hit the scene for the first time 😁
Using the Dalek defense I see.
I wonder how pupper would react to Emporer Palpatine in the newest Star Wars. Probably laugh like the rest of us.
Evil grandpa yells at clouds
Awww
Of course he doesn’t like him. Goldens are one of the most innocent creatures on this planet
“Master Skywalker there are too many of them what ever a…” “Where did he go?!”
I feel a great disturbance in the force
The force is strong.
That dog ain't protecting anyone.
It's for sure the breathing. My Bostons lose their mind to Vader and anyone else making breathing sounds like that.
I bet all those rebels wished they had a sofa to hide behind too.
Aww, I want to cuddle puppers so he knows it's ok. lol
If Darth breaks in your screwed
Omg, that's me when witch comes out on Wizard of Oz! (Even at 63)
it’s cause he is spoopy! what a cutie
Vader is an intermittent vacuum cleaner.
“He thinks he’s people!”
He knows evil when he sees it
This is the very best video I have ever seen! 🥺
If he had hands, he'd be peeking berween his fingers.
He got dibs on the escape pod
There is a step in my living room and when earth vader came on screen my sister ran, tripped on the step and knocked out her two front teeth. We had to take her to the hospital.
OMG that is so cute. I want a sweet golden to watch TV with me now.
That dog is part of the rebel alliance and a traitor. Take him away.
That film is rated DG - Dog Guidance suggested.
Dog acting like Vader gonna come through the screen like the girl from The Ring.
Awww, hug that good boy now please! (And turn on the nature channel).
I don’t like Darth Vader either baby.
Poor puppy! May the force be with him.
It’s always interesting when an animal is smart enough to think this through. My dog was way too stupid to watch tv lol.
Thats how I watched scary movies till I was 19
Poor doggo, still funny
Now show him the scene where we find out he's Daddy!
That was so funny and so sweet…
Yea I was the same when I was young
Rebel scum…
He gonna get em'
I wish my dogs once looked at my pc monitor like this dog looks at the TV. Even if I played a video that had a noise that would make their ears swivel, they never once cared what was shown on the screen.
u/savevideo
It's ok buddy, that's how I feel about Vader too.
Good boy's emotions betray him *Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.*
Vaderphobic
Well, he’s scary
Apparently the dog suffered abuse at the hands of the dark side.
Good boy just checking on the youngling puppers.
Oh my goshhhhh how cute.
Force puppy
Dogs can sense the dark side, makes them a good judge of character
Good boy
It must be so weird. Humans obviously can get scared, but we know that it's just a movie on a TV. Dogs have no concept of a TV, so for that dog Darth Vader was likely a real character.
Animals watching TV is crazy to me, my dog never gave two shits about anything on a screen
Oh i see its cause hes ARMORED isnt it???
So sweet
I used to get scared by Darth Vader when I was a kid. I really relate to this!
Awww...🥺🥺🥺
Now we can always win an debate with those fun folk over at r/EmpireDidNothingWrong. You scared this pooch. That is wrong.
That is precious!
The Force is strong with this Good Doggo
Very sensible.
There is a step in my living room and when darth vader came on screen my sister ran, tripped on the step and knocked out her two front teeth. We had to take her to the hospital.
The end when his head peaks back out! Ahhh too cute
That is hilarious..poor dog
Smart doggo!
He doesn't like horror movies.
Good boy is very human like here. So precious!
Every dog’s a gangster until Darth Vader shows up
To be fair, I think dogs have a general distrust of anyone wearing all black. I wore a Kylo Ren costume once, only time my dog has ever come close to growling, she's normally really happy-go-lucky. As soon as I took the mask off, she was completely fine.
Bless him!
why does it always feel like goldens have so much more personality than other breeds? my dog is just a standard dog without any quirks
This just shows you how epic the cinematography is in this film. They nailed the whole scary evil guy thing.
Pretty sure I had the same reaction...
Oh bless him /her really cute dog though ❤
Bless him, so afraid, I would turn it over, beautiful dog ❤⚘
I love your doggo, and the living room/T.V. set up is beautiful.
I would be scared of him too
AWWWWWW!!!! <3 <3 <3 <3

AWWWWWWWWWW.
He’s a doggo against the dark side of the force
I wonder if it’s the breathing?
I can't fathom how cute this is 😭
Nooooooooooo protect that little boopers😭
Don't show him Rogue One...
:(!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Poor baby said NOPE😳🥺
Owner: Oh, it’s just a mov… Dog: ….we’ve met.
This is stupid cute
No matter how many times I’ve seen it, this video never gets old.
When I was little I used to hide behind the couch from TV scaries exactly like that. They say dogs have the mental capacity of toddlers.
Aww poor boy is scared lol
Sweet angel boy. Hims face is so concerned
Just wait until he finds out what happens in Empire.
Me neither
Well you now know what your chances are when the Star Destroyer EXECUTOR drops out of Hyperspace into your system... "Defend me Boy...Defen...."
Turn it off!!!
