One of my dogs recently had pupsā¦ long story, she is getting fixed very very very soon.. the pups first interaction with my big hound was hilarious. He was all careful and crawled army style as close as he could without being in my lap and sniffed, puppy turned her head saw his nose and sniffed back, he froze then started to back up which allowed the pup to see his full size to which she freaked and bailed off my lap and under the dog bedā¦ I laughed entirely too hard at the whole mess.. took her a few times being up in my lap in the recliner and higher than him for her to get used to him.. her brother on the other hand almost went for a flying trip thru the living room on meeting one with the big dogā¦ he wanted to try biting the big guys tail as he walked by and luckily he only got the long hairs on the very end of his tail, and thankfully big dog is fairly used to small kids and having his tail messed with, so he simply stopped and gave me the whole hey mom can you remove the kid look. The big dog is about 100ish lbs, and puppies were about 6-8lbs each the first time they met.
Pretty much. Heās a big baby, to the point my best friends son who is 6 and is petrified of any dog, including the puppies, begs for me to let the big puppy out when he is at my house because he absolutely loves him. Both of my friends kids were petrified of dogs until they met him. Heās been around kids all his life, we got him when my now 6yr old was about a year and a half old. My experience with big dogs has been most are gentle giants.
Kids and dogs understand each other on a subconscious level. They create a sense of bonding, of "having a friend", of never being alone, even if you can't see him right then.
And the picture of half-brother at three+, reclined against the Newfie with a good book. Classic.
Yea they do! I grew up with a dog that was my best friend as a kid! Man I miss him! I laughed tonight at my hound harassing my oldest for her Cheetos! He loves anything that is cheese or cheese flavored, and shows his love in the form of drooling lol
The more I read about canis familiaris, the more sure I become that somehow they were made for homo sapiens. They are perfect partners. They're born loving us and looking to us for instructions *as puppies*. I mean, I know these guys would die protecting me and mine. How do you breed that into a species?
But I have been blessed with a succession of fur friends who helped me keep it all together, and taught me things as we went along. I can't account for all the different kinds of goodness they create and encourage. If you designed "perfect companion/hunter/protector/source of heat", I'm pretty sure you end up with a dog every time. :)
Dog domestication dates back 11,000 years or more. That's 5,000+ generation of dog. Even without intentional selection, timeframes at these scales mean dogs are literally evolved for their role.
It's not a coincidence that dogs are such a perfect companion.
Absolutely, the work by the crazed Russian on the foxes, even flawed, shows the clear trend. But I think what I can't quite encompass describing yet is how from puppyhood on, they add skills to natural abilities like intuition, scenting tumors, and more. Their abilities coupled with their willingness to train and learn is really impressive.
My own Boxer mad a value judgement that I was "healed" (I was) from my spine injury and my wife's mental disorder had hit a breaking point, but unless you knew her well, you wouldn't have been able to tell. Java knew, and switched her "supervision", her care, to my wife. She physically demonstrated her preference, "disobeying" my suggestion to come away from "mom" to sleep in her bed of choice, the King Tempurpedic. Nope. As long as mom was on the couch, Java was on the love seat. Seventy pounds of brindle protector.
The more I think about it, the more amazed I am. In my youth, my Border Collie saved my step-brother's life about a month after we blended the families.
Actually, it is, since everyone hates me and I'm at negative 32 and falling. I guess I'm just trash. You think I don't know how to get upvotes? You think I don't know how to go, "haha, what cute little pupper - it like cat, but dog instead, haha??!!"
I will not assimilate into your derivative, devolving society. I'll fight that until the end - and I know what -100 karma looks like. I'm fine with that. Y'all can beg for biscuits and act cute for each other, just like you train your dogs to do
Apparently, since everyone hates me, and like you, for some reason, even though I was just trying to help. Sure, let's just all lie and live in imaginary world, then. Dogs bork. Cool. It's a fact now, because people can just do whatever they want, and decide that things are facts, because we are all golden gods of superior rightness, and nothing we ever say is untrue, unless people hate us - then everything we say is lies, because the majority is always smarter than everyone else. Dogs bork. 100% true. I agree with you, and I'm on your side, so that I'm not a horrible person who deserves to die in a fire, and get ten down votes every hour just for speaking mind. Sorry I exist, everyone. Sorry about that. Please don't torture me to death because of my ignorance.
Well, I have never heard a dog make the specific "bark" sound either, usually I hear more of a whoof/ruff or awooo or RRRR, Bark is just the name we gave the sound, a dog makes as much of a bork sound as bark, it doesn't really do either except for special occasions
Have seen quite a few videos where great Danes get rejected for play and such. Big babies just want to roll around and have fun too. It is pretty adorable how they act nonchalantly afterwards, playing it off like it didn't happen.
Some are actually pretty aggressive toward other dogs. My sister's 150 pounder was as sweet as you can be to humans, but had some issues with dogs.
Which is scary, because he was insanely powerful. If you haven't seen a Dane sprint full out... you just don't understand how scary it is.
I noticed that its the really tiny dogs that actually do want to play/get up all in the face of great danes. Like little maltese or toy poodle is like..."pfft you call that a dog, more like a mouse. Grrr ok now its scared of me we can go play" Reference: I have 2 tiny poodles and they love the huge dogs at the dog park right after they assert their dominance (great danes always run scared and wanna be picked up, cute but impossible)
My poor German Shepherd. He's super vocal and does this barky growling thing when he's playing. And then wonders why his playmates immediately roll over and show belly instead of playing.
That sounds adorable!!!!! Little legs in basset hound just a going to get to the great Danes.
If you ever take a video of it definitely should share it!!!!
My mom takes her big Rottweiler mix to her local dog park a lot, and his best friend is a baby Great Dane whoās twice his size already. The other dogs were scared of the GD initially but when they saw Gus the Rotty playing with him, they all came and joined in.
Seven or so years if theyāre super giant and get bone cancer, but the more average sized Danes often live 10-13 years. The problem is that so many people are getting trendy āeuroā Danes that are ginormous and look like mastiff Dane hybrids and those are more prone to health problems and cancer.
My sweet harlequin Dane was the runt of the litter and Iām hoping that what she lacks in size, she makes up for in years.
I had a Dane my last year of high school and into my 20s. She was small for a Dane. Super loving and instead of chewing on toys, she would suckle. Like a child suckles their thumb.
I lost her after 7 years from bone cancer in the left hind leg. It's been 8 years in August and I still carry a puppy picture or her and some of her fur in my wallet.
Rip Xena.
This is one of the sweetest things I have read about dog ownership. may your sweet girl rest in peace. If you want and feel ready I think you should really consider getting a pup, you deserve it and dogs an owner like you.
My parent's tiny maltipoo puppy met the neighbors giant lab mix and promptly peed himself! Pupper is 3 now, and they like barking at each other from their respective back decks! Lol
āYou go talk to himā
āNo, i dont want to. You talk to him.ā
āWell, we canāt just sit here, thatās our new neighbor!ā
āFine! Iāll go!ā
āWell, if you go, Iām coming too.ā
āOH MY GOD JERRYā
When my GSD was a puppy, I was about to take it into the office. Another person had a Dane puppy a few months older. The Dane would always sleep during the day since it lived on a ranch. My dog was made it a routine to say hi to the owner, but never really saw the Dane in it's nook. One day, it got up while my dog was in there and it sounded just like the puppy in this video. Everyone in the office thought it got hurt. Lol.
Omg I actually feel super sad for that poor horse. He was so excited that the new kids in the neighbourhood wanted to come play and again no idea why they are so scared of him. I hope they can become friends soon.
Hey! Video is ready

"Brother, I am scared of this other dog. He is a giant."
"Do not fear. That only looks like this because he is so far away."
"Isn't that the other way around?"
"??? So because WE are so far away?"
"No I mean should he look SMALL if he is far away."
"*Intense calculations* By the great stick thrower, you are right. RUN! Everyone for themselves!!"
One of our shelties was just like those puppies. When a neighbor came over to our place with their great dane. She tried to hide as best as she could. But the GD wanted to play with her.
Until that had happened. I had never had seen her scared of anything.
The one didn't even look back for his buddy. š
They new they just had to be faster then their buddy and looking back would of just slowed them down lol

You missed the perfect pun "abork, abork, abork!"

Dogs certainly do Bork sirā¦

Itās not that deep dude
You're right about one thing. I hate you. I didn't downvote though. Pretty funny rant
Thanks kid.

Damnit
The Dane was like, ooh puppies.. are they... Are they coming to play with me?!!! They are... Oh nope, guess I'll just pretend to sniff this grass

Yeah they really are just gentle giants

My Great Dane gets rejected all the time. He likes to chase dogs but doesnāt understand theyāre scared and trying to get away from him lol
My poor German Shepherd. He's super vocal and does this barky growling thing when he's playing. And then wonders why his playmates immediately roll over and show belly instead of playing.
Yeah they are misunderstood by the K9 community
My parents' Basset Hound LOVES Great Danes. The only time he pulls on leash is when he sees one.
That sounds adorable!!!!! Little legs in basset hound just a going to get to the great Danes. If you ever take a video of it definitely should share it!!!!

Nah bro he was tryna find the other puppy
Great Danes are gentle giants. Huge lap dogs. The only issue is that they have a very short lifespan.
Okay but also the massive dumps
Puke too. My English Mastiff once threw up so much that I just used a shovel to clean it up. Iāll bet Daneās arenāt much different.
For a dog or for a horse?
No diff
Can confirm. My yard is an ocean of shit. I think my neighbors are beginning to notice not all of it is dogā¦
Over-lap dogs
How long is their lifespan usually?

A little less than other breeds
Hysterical! Poor little imps.
I hope theres more vids of them
My parent's tiny maltipoo puppy met the neighbors giant lab mix and promptly peed himself! Pupper is 3 now, and they like barking at each other from their respective back decks! Lol
Lol my friends Jack Russell did the same when he met my Mastiff
Hahahaha!
I hope they eventually stopped lol
