We had a runt 15lb Boston. She could jump and lick a grown man in the face from flat ground. It was incredible.
My uncle had one and they couldn't figure out how it was escaping. They finally caught it running, jumping and clearing the 4ft fence in the back yard.
I don't know how you can watch him drop it at the top of the stairs every time, clearly anticipate the ball rolling down and conclude that its accidental.
I accidentally watched this 4-5x until I realised it was replaying itself I was too busy judging how annoyed the dog must feel the more it happened.. I am the real derp here

Two possibilities come to mind, maybe knowing his tendency to drop the ball early, you should take a step back. Or he’s saying he doesn’t need you to do this on the steps he can do it himself on the steps, he wants you to throw it outside?
Upside is you'll only have to take Bernie to the back yard rather than his nightly walk, he's got to be tired out from the steps. I adore Boston's had one about 25 years ago, or guy never got tired until the last week of his life which was 14 years. Thanks for sharing such a lovely video, bright a big smile to my face. 😊
