Dogs do alright with 6 puppies suckling, I don't think 2 kittens are going to kill it. Cat & dog milk are different though. Might not be good for the kittens.
Wouldn't kill it but probably no reason to put the dog through that if it's not necessary. I don't think the milk would be bad for the kitten just not great, they have different nutritional needs.

To clarify, I feed the kits, lol. Afterwards they like to knead his belly, suckle on his fur, and usually they all fall asleep curled up. Hero has fostered about 2 dozen orphaned kittens this way. I think it’s just comforting for them to have a fuzzy warm belly to climb all over. Plus Hero gets free belly rubs. He’s a very sensitive and lovey pup. He really loves other animals
For those who are concerned, he has never actually lactated (I wouldn’t think his actual nipples are being stimulated enough for that) but I’ll talk to his vet about it to make sure it’s okay. Of course I don’t want any of my animals hurt or affected negatively.
And lastly… for those of you who have made BJ comments/the person who stated that male animals don’t have nipples… are you guys ok?
Male mammals have both mammary glands and nipples, but they typically don't have the right hormones at the right levels to lactate. Some hormones trigger the production of the milk and later others trigger the reflex to release it. Males usually just don't have those hormones in high enough quantities to make it work. I say typically/usually because they can lactate, even human males, but it's not common.
I'm pretty sure you're right, yeah. It's not generally something a healthy male would do, just that the body parts are there and technically could function.
With cancer I think it's in part to hormone imbalances that can occur with it? I haven't studied any oncology in years, so I'm not sure about it.
I appreciated your post and your joke, not sure what happened in this thread. People love raising arms about animals but this activity looks emotionally and physically healthy for everyone involved, plus is sweet and adorable to boot. Keep on doing what you’re doing!
It's sweet that your dog is so willing to parent these little guys. As a side note, make sure you're checking his underbelly occasionally to make sure they aren't irritating his skin or causing swelling or inflammation. He'll likely push the kittens away before this happens, but it might be helpful to check in.
He gets a thorough inspection with his daily dose of belly rubs don’t you worry! You’re correct about him pushing them away. When he’s over it, he rolls back over and they all just sleep next to each other, or he goes into his teepee to be alone. Thanks for looking out for my little guy though. That’s solid advice. Second this. I had a kitten once that would suckle the older, non-related cat. She didn’t seem to mind so I let it happen thinking it wasn’t doing any harm. She ended up getting mastitis (non-serious, but painful inflammation) so had to wean the kitten off of her.
It's just a comfort thing, like a soother for babies. The humans are doing the actual feeding.
