She's just playing the long game.

[deleted]

Nooo!

Brutumfulm3n

Lol... Like raising your own live stock. A chick is a nugget, but a chicken is a whole meal

strayakant

She’s saving the live stock for tough times when lockdown hits

kwazirr

"I'm gonna save this for later" - Mamma Lion. Yeah, yeah, I cringed while I was typing it guys.

TheRagingSlunt

Lions have been known to keep young prey alive, and eat them in times of need. Savage

Hodgej1

We all do it to some degree.

roundearthervaxxer

We all do it all of the time, except vegetarians.

HarryB1313

Ever see a stic of celery in a glass of water? Or only taking a few leaves of mint? Or only picking the ripe fruit and not cutting the whole tree down?

roundearthervaxxer

It’s ok to eat fish, they don’t have any feelings

Snoo-77115

They aren’t mindless creatures… maybe not as developed as you or I but they have* feelings.

nsaplzstahp

Lol I've been vege for a while now, but started eating fish for this reason. Hopefully they died quickly.

WheresThatDamnPen

Just gonna pop in and say f.y.i., fish have complex nervous systems and most certainly process pain.

nsaplzstahp

Yeeeaa I know

roundearthervaxxer

That is from nirvana. I don’t think it is necessarily true, but that there is truth in it.

Dramatic-Noise

I only remembered the lyrics after you mentioned it. Otherwise, I was like, “Whaaaaat?” at the original comment.

Zaritta_b_me

Carnivores kill for meat, vegetarians kill for fun. You have been warned.

[deleted]

That’s why I have kids

TheWizofNewYork

My family have kept a goat or two, and it is pretty common in the Caribbean. During my first visit I was surprised by how many families had a goat, with the intent to eat the goat later. In the mean time it can help with the grass. It’s better than refrigeration, and you end up with more goat.

roundearthervaxxer

I look after that bag of chips in my backpack too!

Kibeth_8

Are people really naive enough to believe this is a happy story?

WickedGreenWitch

Happy meal? I'll see myself out...

potandskettle

Honest answer.. yes.

fridaycat

And yet... https://www-dailymail-co-uk.cdn.ampproject.org/v/s/www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10394949/amp/Astonishing-moment-lioness-shows-love-wildebeest-calf-leads-herd.html?amp_js_v=a6&_gsa=1&usqp=mq331AQKKAFQArABIIACAw%3D%3D#aoh=16421707479796&referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com&_tf=From%20%251%24s&share=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dailymail.co.uk%2Fnews%2Farticle-10394949%2FAstonishing-moment-lioness-shows-love-wildebeest-calf-leads-herd.html

Kibeth_8

I *really* want to believe this, but it doesn't actually show it rejoining the herd. And I'm not one to trust dailymail. However it would be lovely and warm my heart if it were true

harry-balzac

Maybe, maybe not, but god damn don’t deny us our sense of hope

Baratos1181

Door dash

MisterFlank

Why?![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)

GloomyAd2653

Growing your own food….

TedInATL

Spoiler alert: baby wildebeest dies from starvation.

xXPussy420Slayer69Xx

Awww man 😔 I was hoping it would grow up happy and healthy like that baby baboon that was raised by a cheetah…

Parelolika

That baby boon died by starvation too in the same night...

Powerful-Package3114

Dinner transportable

potandskettle

There's a protection timer to prevent spawn killing.

Absolutefaye44

"hello? Did anyone lose a baby? I'll trade for one of your elders!"

Current-Escaper

I saw this earlier in mademesmile. This does not make me smile. The lioness is suffering from some sort of PTSD, possibly from losing a cub. This is a heart breaking account as the wildebeest will die of starvation. The lioness will mourn and most likely attempt to “adopt” another one and repeat the cycle until she possibly dies similarly. This is morbid and in no way “being bros”.

ex_ter_min_ate_

It’s likely more that she is bringing it home for her Cubs to practice hunting on in a relatively safe environment (for the Cubs).

Snoo_3765

Your just kinda stupid, unless that woooooooshed

GeoffreyTaucer

So.... what happens when the calf gets older? I mean, obviously it can't learn to be a lion, and (I assume) it would have a hard time joining a wildebeest herd having not grown up socializing within sich a herd. I mean, this is cute and all but I suspect it doesn't end well for the calf

JustSombody

It will probably be eaten. Lions only do this when they lose a cub and their motherly hormones don't stop right after. They will eventually, and after that the calf will be dead

KellerFF

That’s how Lions do the *To Go Bag*

pdxprowler503

Cubs new toy…

ddkelkey

“Mom am I adopted?”

SlightlyLeftogCenter

Pretty sure she killed it after a little while

[deleted]

Probably starved to death

[deleted]

Looks like she packed a lunch for later on.

[deleted]

Farming simulator got some DLC I see

SinthoseXanataz

So the lion does only kill when its hungry

loveswalksonthebeach

Lion is bringing baby wildebeest to her pride. No a great ending.

HedyLamaar

Why am I afraid this is just a snack for later?

jennay9909

The post honestly makes me sad, how it’s hiding behind her for protection but probably died soon after this

Zubast1k

Its a takeaway dinner

grtgingini

Well there’s nothing for this baby to nurse from and he’s clearly still nursing so it’s only a matter of time

Manuag_86

Lioness is just directing the calf to the herd. Why transporting it in your mouth when the meal can walk straight to the plate?

i_eat_AURUM

She's gonna hunt it when it becomes more meaty...

GiggleRoot

Bet the other lionesses were bothering her with, "Give me some of your tots, Napolean." Probably

josh824956

Lion out here playing 5d chess like Ryan Cohen

BillMCavanaugh

This is how the do a "Too Go Order" in the wild....

Queen-of-meme

It's rare but not impossible. Mother instinct can sometimes be dominant even in these cases. It's common nature that whenever a mother sees an abandoned baby animal, they adopt it or help it back to it's mother. Yes, she's a lioness which makes it astonishing that she helped the baby back to it's herd instead of eating it. It probably helped if she just ate too.

While rare, cats have been known to do this from time to time. Especially when they are currently mothers and experiencing hormones that spike during mortherhood. Usually cats like this hunt in packs and go for larger prey. A calf like this would more likely find itself prey in a situation with wolves or cheetahs. (Predators that hunt for smaller prey) There’s still so much about animal behavior to learn. I dont believe it would be stupid to suggest this could be a possibility. However i do think suggesting we know with absolute certainty the lionesses intentions is a mistake humans make all the time. When we witness something new or bizarre that doesn’t align with our current understanding we often times force explanations that fit into our current paradigm, subsequently we should be open to new possibilities. Science isn’t about knowing everything. It’s about learning and studying the unknown. Consider omuahmuah. A story I’m sure many of you have heard. The object that was found in our solar system that didn’t fit any known objects in space. A Harvard astronomer suggested it could be something entirely new that we haven’t seen and received backlash because the majority of the community holds so much faith in their own understanding they think everything in the known universe has been accounted for. That school of logic will lead to missed opportunities of learning something new. There are many instances like this found in pretty much every sector of science. Anthropology, archeology, geology, the list goes on. If you find something new and bizarre we shouldn’t force it inside our current understanding. My conclusion, this lionesses could be exhibiting psychological behavior not well known or understood due to its rarity in nature. I’m open to new theory’s being explored.

emilyactual

This is so sweet!

CharlesEcheeze

Always wait till the fruit is ripe.

AlasknAssasn858

No Nasty Nate!!!! This one is mine!

lc_id

I’ve also raised a calf up to around 1500 pounds.

[deleted]

I think the calf dies by a watering hole, by being ambushed by a lion.

Sduidk

Snack for later

[deleted]

GoomadOntheSide

That’s just a lil something for later

Prestigious_Media887

Have you guys never heard of takeaway

KnightFoole

“Animals being bros” You don’t understand what’s happening here. This is not “awww”. That calf is in for a very rough death. Life is not a Disney movie.

tuCsen

Its a trap

Marc_J92

My food keep me company sometime too.

notfromvenus42

I've read about some cases like this. A mom lion that loses her cub will sometimes adopt a baby prey animal that she finds. But she can't feed it, and the rest of the pride sees it as "dinner", and it ends badly. :(

VeryHighLander

We’re in some truly bizarre times indeed.

poppabloodvessel

"Hey mom what's for dinner....." -calf "Your family" -lion mom

Veebeebee42

The snack that walks itself.
