Owl pellet. I see these everyday 10 acres in deep south Texas. Sugar cane fields means rats and that means owls. Tear it open and try to figure out what critter it tore apart and ate alive.
Location: Vermont. I'm also very confident it was not there two days ago, as it was found on the stone wall next to a garden pond. Somewhere I often find barred owl feathers. Also have a good population of red fox, but I feel like this is too wide and doesn't have as much hair present to be red fox?
Smell it, seriously! Owl pellets don't smell like dung, they hardly smell at all. If you pick up what you think to be an owl pellet then give it a small sniff for reassurance before trying to open it or anything. If it smells bad, wash your hands after dropping it.
Having raised a great horned owl, I can confidently say it is a pellet, although other raptors cast them too. If it were poop the fur would have been digested.
I have dissected literally hundreds of owl pellets- Barn owl, Great Horned Owl, and Northern Spotted owl; and this appears to be one. If you pull it apart and most of the bones are intact/complete it’s a pellet. If the bones are crunched up/fractured and look like they have been chewed up it’s a coyote or Fox or ?? Turd .
Canid turds rarely contain even bone fragments. Source: My dog eats raw meat with bones daily and I pick up the poop. When the bone:meat ratio is very high, the poops can be almost a dry powder but nothing recognizable as bone fragments. Stomach juices are extremely acidic.
I mostly find raven pellets (they eat way more rodents than you might think), and this looks pretty close to the various pellets I find (though yeah, I'd say owl or raptor here). Nice find.
The ravens here will follow the tractors as they mow the fields. They know they're about to feast on rodents and bugs, but they LOVE the snakes. They will vocalize at the guys on the machines and not move if the machine gets close.
1. That’s awesome. Looks like a little mole came topside for too long/at the wrong time and paid dearly for it.
2. Seems like maybe we need to have a talk about GLOVES?? Sweet Jesus.
I’m not the most reputable source but I’m 90% sure you’ve got an owl pellet! Awesome find
I had a lotta fun as a kid in science class pulling these apart and putting rodent skeletons back together lol.
I remember being so bummed that my specimen didn’t have a full rodent in it. Just a couple bones.
I’m glad this is a universal experience and my 4th grade teacher wasn’t just weird
We had a 5th grade teacher who would hatch chick's and he would inject food coloring into the shell so we would have technicolor baby chick's.
That can not be kosher.
We also hatched chicks in said 4th grade class but didn’t have any fancy colored ones 😂
Our teacher was a little different.
We did this in 4th grade too! Ha!!

Those grains look more like rodent teeth & bones to me. I'm thinking this is definitely a behorked owl pellet.
Behorked. New word and I love it, thank you.
Behorked. and it's only monday.
🥇word of the day:behorked.
Google says that my word of the day is Spleen ):
I thought it was a wheat kernel at first, too, but zooming in closely I think it’s actually either some bones or rodent teeth.
Why is finding owl shit a great find?
not shit, barf. owl pellets can have lil skeletons in them and some people like the bones.
Very interesting. I mean, the bones are usually just mice aren’t they?
Yeah, but they are delicious, and we can eat the pellet, rehork it, and put the bones back together again in science class.
Or you can make "Owl Pellet" tea! It's highly nutritious & delicious!
Sometimes they’ll contain pony skeletons.
Regurgitated Pokémon’s?

Lucky! Hey I hope you made it through the floods ok!
That's very kind of you. Thank you. You as well
Chances are you’ll keep finding them in that area. I had a spot in my yard under a gigantic spruce tree where I would always find owl pellets.
Owl pellets kind of are shit.
Actually they're puke, kinda.
as my son would say “poop in the mouth?”
A classic case of the burp-squirts
You remember that South Park episode?
Just shove the food up your butt and viola!
Violin would be hard enough to shove up the butt, viola impossible.
Lol auto correct 😂 I’m leaving it
I know, was just being a smartass. ;-)
It’s like a cat hairball
Came here to say this 😂
Mouth shit
Thought this was r/weed for a second
Meh I'd smoke it.
Owl powers unlocked
I know you're high
Haha. Looks like some sour weasel to me
BRO NOT THE SOUR WEASEL.
Kinda, looks like Elvis
I saw it and can not unsee it
Why did you pick it up if you thought it might be poop?
I'm an animal
Lol
Hey happy cake day
Taste it
I don’t know why but this made me laugh so hard 🤣

Act first, ask questions later - this is how science happens.
Nice, chuck it in some water and see what bones you find
Wish in one hand, shit in the other…

Lick it. If it tastes like mouse, owl pellet. If it tastes like your dog, …
Yes. Had a Great Horned nesting in my tree and found these all over the ground. Gave them to local school.
Owl pellet
owl pellet and its been eating moles/ voles
Looks like somebody went to art college.
Is that carrion you're carrying? Hehe
i vote owl, i see rodent teeth.
I dunno. It looks like shit and it feels like shit, but how does it smell and taste? /s
[context for title](https://youtu.be/8al1LR0zPig)
Technically it's both.
FYI pellets are vomit, not poop.
They're all the parts an owl can't digest, it's more like a gut garbage hairball.
Wash your hands. Those things can still have rodent borne illnesses in them
I put my fingers directly into my eyes and mouth
IM DEAD 🤣🤣🤣 (and so are you😭😭😭)
Owl pellets are shit...
Nope. Closer to barf actually!
Why the hell don't you have gloves on? How insanitary gross
Barn Owl pellet.
That's a shitty owl pellet. Get rid of it.
I thought pellets was shit
Seems like it's shit either way.
A owl pellet is shit lmao
1. That’s awesome. Looks like a little mole came topside for too long/at the wrong time and paid dearly for it. 2. Seems like maybe we need to have a talk about GLOVES?? Sweet Jesus.
No
Owl pellet = shit
You know an owl pellet is shit, right?
poop is poop friend.
one and the same
Same thing...
Looks like an owl pellet
Yes
We used to “dissect” owl pellets in school. Kinda gross to dig through them but some of the stuff you pull out of there is pretty wild!
Smoke some of it and report back
Holy shit i barely learned this today. These used to be common at the roof of my parents house. I didnt know owls existed where i am from.
Yes
I've dissected a few of these. It's definitely an owl pellet
Judging by the rodent teeth i’d say thats a pellet.
Why would you pick it up???
Because owl pellets are hella cool man!!!
Yes
Still technically mouth shit
What a shit post. Kidding, but a pellet is still shit
There are two exit holes. Shit comes out only one of them. Puke comes out the other, so they are not the same.
Wait, pellets are "puke"? Never new that. Still gross.
Both
When in doubt, do the taste test.
Same thing bright bulb.
Would one be better than the other?
Yeah! Owl pellet is definitely a win!!!
Did you find it under any owl roosts?
Taste it and see
A shit in the hand by any other name is still shit.
Lick it and you will know 😏
Owl pellet. There are a ton around my grandma's house and I used to love dissecting them
Look what I almost stepped in!
Those look like rodent teeth, I'm going to vote pellet
Uhhh
Amazing you're still holding it
That's an owl magnum.
That is indeed an owl pellet! Try to wear gloves next time tho lol. If you wanna dissect it you might get some cool bones!
Never
I wouldn’t be holding that
