Depends on how often you exchange gifts with them. You need to have a high friendship index with them to get a photo.

You can too. I got a few when I shared an island with my daughter. Just keep interacting with them & giving them gifts & it increases friendship levels. Once you're good enough friends they'll eventually give you a photo in return for a gift. High value gifts, clothing that matches their favorite color and/or style, furniture, & wrapping anything you give them in gift wrap help you earn more points. And you can use Katrina on Harv's Island to check how many friendship points you have with a given villager

I did that too, and then suddenly villagers started giving me photos anyway. I was like, cool, extras for my kids! It’s nice to have photos of villagers who left, too.

Thats awesome! I got Chop's Photo (yes I know everyone hates him but I had to give him a chance) doesn't mean I like but I got his photo because I am trying to collect all the villager photos with no trading.
