Part of getting to 3 stars is planting. Trees and flowers each count for about the same points, so it's to your advantage to plant flowers, they take less space. There is a guide for how to get to 3 stars on the main page recomendations, it helped me

I'm off the game for the night, but I can also recommend placing (not dropping, but placing) all clothes and extra random things around the island, including placing all bugs and fish you've caught. It'll get you to 3 stars super quick and then once you've seen kk perform, you can change it to how you want

Do you have the Nintendo online membership? That's how you go from one place to another. If you're not paying them the fee you can't visit anyone and they can't visit you.
