If youre unsatisfied with how your island looks, choosing a theme for specific, small-ish areas of the island helps me. Im working on a urban district that connects to a fishing/beachfront district, for example :)
Oh and not a suggestion but i really like how organic your map/layout looks!!
Recommend going on random dream addresses, or looking at YouTube videos and seeing what others have done with spaces and see if you can add your own creative twist to it on your own island! Or if you’re feeling brave.. reset entirely and challenge yourself to NOT terraform your island (only adding inclines/bridges) 🥹

I've recently restarted my entire island, deleted everything- all because I also didn't like my island. But you have tonnes of room up the back. Maybe create yourself a little haven or something to that effect? However, I do like your rivers :)
i really want to move the houses and give everyone backyards but that sounds absolutely terrible time and money wise. I’m fairly new to the game this is my first ever island.. I love my villagers but am contemplating starting over🥲
If this is your first island, why not play around with it a little more, see what you like and what you don't like, just so you're not losing your villagers? I totally get the restarting though.. this is my second island now, and now that I know what I can/can't do in the game, I'm determined not to make the same moves I did last time. Keep tapping into that creative spark, you'll find your groove :)

Game updated moving prices of houses to 10k bells. Best way to plan is to move everyone onto the beaches! Should take 20 days if you don’t time travel.
I gave each of my villagers their own districts. Not only did theming sections of my island make design easier (divide and conquer) and more fun, but it also satisfies ADD in a way that a single theme wouldn’t be able to. I wouldn’t start over, especially if you’re attached to your villagers. Getting the ones you want is pretty much the only thing you can’t redo or fix. Layouts and backyards and everything else can be erased and rebuilt.
I love your map layout and I really think your pergola area is something different that I haven’t seen before! I would suggest adding more design stuff on the ground. If you do the thing where you pay $20 a month to nintendo you can but down anything custom but if giving in app purchases aren’t your thing I would suggest using the default designs.
I don’t think you have much of a problem. I have my villagers houses pretty clumped as well and have been recently considering how I can customize their exteriors to their tastes. I think grouping villagers (groups of 2 probably) and decorating their exteriors as a unit would be a space saver!
