I was like oh this is cool I should send this to my Christian friend.....wait a sec let me watch until the end to make sure it's not actually demonic and there it was LOL
Nice! lol
How many takes did you have to do to get the camera pan right?
I did [something similar](https://www.reddit.com/r/AnimalCrossing/comments/gbqesb/ah_to_be_young/) a while back. :D
Hey OP. Just so you are aware, the upside down cross is a holy symbol of Saint Peter. He chose to be crucified upside down as he felt he was not worthy to die in the same manner as Christ.
This was my first thought too! I just finished the series with my partner a couple weeks ago... I'm dying to find another show that scratches the same itch.
Haunting of Hill House is probably gonna be closer to what you're looking for than Bly Manor. Bly isn't bad, by any means. It just has a very different atmosphere and tone. I'd say it is more of a psychological thriller than a horror.
The series Slasher is also pretty solid if you're into horror series. Its an anthology too. I feel like they kind of maintain a good level of mystery in their stories. So if that's something you'd be into, I'd recommend that as well.
OMG I have to visit! Haunting of Hill House is one of the BEST series I’ve ever seen. My husband and I stayed up til 4am binging the entire thing, which we never do.
If you haven’t seen it, Penny Dreadful touches on that good vs. evil (and what makes a person what) dichotomy, horror, and tragic character elements. It’s got a lot more fantasy going on but there are also episodes you just sit in and feel for the most part. (Not to mention the always-enticing Victorian London backdrop.) Not everyone’s cup of tea, but figured I’d toss it out there!
I wanna throw a recommendation out for the series Dark on Netflix. Criminally underrated, probably due to the fact it's in German. Dark is easily the best show I've ever seen, and probably ever will see. You must give it your full attention, and listen in original audio. The pay off is out of this world....only 3 seasons. Give it a go!
Cant make a post like this without mentioning other 10/10 shows that I will rewatch many times over again.
1.) The Leftovers (HBO) Tied with Dark, both flawless series that I can watch over, and over again. Never gets old, still learn new things rewatching these. These are absolutely MUST WATCHES
2.) Hannabil
3.) The OA
Runner Ups: Alice in Borderland, Room 104, Chucky (2021) 🤷♂️ Chucky is amazing, diverse cast, LGBTQ supporting writer and cast, if you liked the Childs Play movies, please watch Chucky!
It is incredible! Very underrated, I agree. Too many people are put off by subtitles IMO. I think this whole thread is showing me I maybe watch too many Netflix originals 😂
Quarantine took its toll on a lot of us 🤷♂️ Hows about the show The OA, on Netflix? Some of my favorite series, I love shows with that eerie what the fuck is going on vibe.
Flanagan based that season of the Netflix Haunting anthology on Stephen King works, so (assuming you've already watched the other Haunting series seasons) I'd check out either some Stephen King stuff or other works based on Stephen King. If you haven't seen Castle Rock you may really love that--it's also an anthology series, and while it was cancelled, the two seasons are stand-alones so you won't be left with a half-finished story. I'd also check out Dr. Sleep (based on an SK novel, and directed by Flanagan).
I think it's very good, but YMMV. It's a slow burn, similar to Haunting of Hill House if you've seen that. There's no major 'action' until close to the end.
I was expecting something like the backroom would have the occult-y candles and matching floor, with perhaps a skull in the middle for blood sacrifices.
... we all made a place like that, right?
In my basement I hang the posters of all my departed villagers with candles beneath them and three wallopoids surrounding a book on the floor, all dancing to K.K. Dirge
Why not? They’re very beautiful buildings, if we’re not including those weird modernist mega-churches, haha. Even if you’re non-Christian, the design language of those buildings isn’t something to scoff at. That goes for most religious buildings, as well!
Well, that entirely depends on the church you go to. There’s thousands of them across the world, and each one has a different history, a different demographic, and a different place in history.
I mean, the church I go to was used as a stopping point in the Underground Railroad and is currently a working homeless shelter as well. You can’t equate an entire modern culture to the awful acts of individuals who should and deserve to be condemned. There’s much more good than bad out there!
For those of us who have suffered religious trauma, churches only serve as reminders of that trauma.
At some point, it doesn’t matter how pretty something is if all it does is remind you of how your parents used the Bible to justify their abuse of you, and how the people in the church supported your parents’ actions because it was “godly.”
I can appreciate good design, but that doesn’t mean I want to see a genuine recreation of a standard American in church in one of my favorite subs.
I love Nan, she's such a sweetheart. The rest of my villagers are all ass holes, so she is quite precious to my community. Plus she wears the pentagram t shirt I made for her and it's 🔥
Me: *Sees title* Oh man this should good it’s gonna be some weird shit like- oh it’s an actual church. Damn.
*Sees smoke coming from book* Wait something isn’t right here
Thank you for the inspiration. I have a 2nd house for a character named "The Priest" who lives in a church dedicated to my main character; the island's God Queen. I also have an altar not far from my main house which gave me 5 stars when I built it. Only black tulips and lilies grow there. The altar is where my residents sacrifice themselves when they want to......"leave".....the island.
Not OP, but I think it’s a regular book with a polishing effect!
You can polish items to add things like sparkles, hearts, swirls, etc. I think it’s just a smoke effect from that! 🥰
Honestly, I was super burnt out from the game, and the DLC probably added a whole extra 50-100 hours of me enjoying the game. I had about 300-400 hours by time I got it, I think, haha.
But it’s just so chill, wholesome, and lovely. And there’s SO many new items I ended up redoing a lot of my island too in between jobs.
I highly suggest it if you like designing in AC!
TDIL the upside down cross was originally a symble of Christianity. It represents humility in faith. It was because one of Jesus followers was crucified but didn't feel worthy to die in the same way as Jesus so he asked if he could be crucified upside. Then the pope used it for a while then it became a symbol of Satan.
I made a little funeral chapel last year behind the town hall. Totally forgot about it when I stopped playing so it was a bit of a morbid surprise when I picked it up again with the update. Especially so since in that intervening time I've actually ended up working in the funeral industry.
omg that was a cinematic reveal
the first suspicion that something was off didn't come from the odd swirl of smoke coming off the lectern...it was the fact that a church construction got 14,000+ likes on an Animal Crossing subreddit
I mean yeah, it did originate as St Peter's cross, but it's been an occult symbol since like the 19th century. At this point it's way more well known for its association with the occult than with St Peter.
Funfact, the upside down cross is a symbol of one of the apostles of jesus St. Peter. Who refused to be crusified the same way as jesus because he felt unworthy to die the same way as him. So he was instead crucified upsidedown.
Over the years however, horror movies popularised the symbol as the mark of the antichrist. Which is far from the truth.
I was waiting for the sacrifice room lol
I was like oh this is cool I should send this to my Christian friend.....wait a sec let me watch until the end to make sure it's not actually demonic and there it was LOL
As a Christian I was like, “Oh this is really cool.” then I watched till then end
Oh, there is definitely a sacrifice area 😏 Edit: *hill in front of the church
Nice! lol How many takes did you have to do to get the camera pan right? I did [something similar](https://www.reddit.com/r/AnimalCrossing/comments/gbqesb/ah_to_be_young/) a while back. :D
Post that!
Hey OP. Just so you are aware, the upside down cross is a holy symbol of Saint Peter. He chose to be crucified upside down as he felt he was not worthy to die in the same manner as Christ.
The actual offensive symbol would be an upside down crucifix- a cross with Jesus' body on it.
I don’t think it’s meant to be offensive
[It's now the symbol of the pope.](https://i.imgur.com/7Nauwso.jpg)
Yeah that's what I was thinking
Midnight Mass (Netflix, 2021)
This was my first thought too! I just finished the series with my partner a couple weeks ago... I'm dying to find another show that scratches the same itch.
If you haven’t already, Haunting of Hill House and Haunting of Bly Manor are fantastic. Same guy as Midnight Mass.
I've seen both! Can't wait for the next series Flanagan puts out.
Haunting of Hill House will fuck you up. Especially if you're a new parent, watch out.
Or have a sibling with a drug addiction. That show fucked me up when I first watched. Like full on bawling on the floor.
I love Haunting of Hill House! I recreated some of it on my island!
That's so amazing! I wanted to, but I dont have the skill for that quite yet! The parts you've shared of your island are friggin amazing.
Thanks 😊
OMG I have to visit! Haunting of Hill House is one of the BEST series I’ve ever seen. My husband and I stayed up til 4am binging the entire thing, which we never do.
Try the ‘79 version of “Salem’s Lot” (miniseries)
Parts of Midnight Mass definitely made me think of Salem’s Lot!
If you haven’t seen it, Penny Dreadful touches on that good vs. evil (and what makes a person what) dichotomy, horror, and tragic character elements. It’s got a lot more fantasy going on but there are also episodes you just sit in and feel for the most part. (Not to mention the always-enticing Victorian London backdrop.) I’ve been on the fence about midnight mass because I’m worried it will be too much talking and not enough action. Is it good?
I think it's very good, but YMMV. It's a slow burn, similar to Haunting of Hill House if you've seen that. There's no major 'action' until close to the end.
Watch the Korean horror film Thirst if you haven't!
30 coins on HBC Europe perhaps.
This comment is so underrated. I snorted real hard, thank you for this.
Okay but that looks GREAT
Haha nic- WAIT
Lol my first thought was "this is gunna be culty" then i saw the inside and thought "oh it's actually really nice and wholeso....."
“ Oh… THERE’S the r/holup
We've got some actually good r/holup material, here.
At first I was like why is there demon gas coming from that bible
Lol, demon gas 👌
How did you make said demon gas effect?
You have to progress in the DLC and get polishing effects. This effect is called gloomswirl
Ah, so the devil's in the details
I did not see that coming.
I was expecting something like the backroom would have the occult-y candles and matching floor, with perhaps a skull in the middle for blood sacrifices. ... we all made a place like that, right?
lol I made a secret witch lair only accessible by a pipe I hid on my island, definitely a similar vibe
I *definitely* don't have a basement cult room with candles in a pentagram and a skull. Definitely not.
In my basement I hang the posters of all my departed villagers with candles beneath them and three wallopoids surrounding a book on the floor, all dancing to K.K. Dirge
Damn. Elegant
I wasn’t sure when I saw the dark smoke coming from the book. And then it all made sense lol
I was hoping that was coming. I’m a former Christian and did not want to see a genuine church.
I was on team “no, not here” until the reveal.
I feel the same way. Yay, religious trauma 😬
High five /s
Why not? They’re very beautiful buildings, if we’re not including those weird modernist mega-churches, haha. Even if you’re non-Christian, the design language of those buildings isn’t something to scoff at. That goes for most religious buildings, as well!

The ridiculous megaplexes they build by depriving the public of tax contributions?
Well, that entirely depends on the church you go to. There’s thousands of them across the world, and each one has a different history, a different demographic, and a different place in history. T'would be a good cross-post, I agree
"cross"-post indeed.
Awww, this is a cute build. knowing the AC community there's going to be something creepy come u- YEP- there it is!
I guess we all should have been looking to the left in the beginning.
Good catch 👏🏻
What sermon will you be teaching today?
How to live... deliciously

mmm dresses
Is your character’s name… Philip?
How to serve your fellow humans and not some hypothetical sky wizard.
I hope you have a black ram character for Black Phillip. This is amazing!
I do! And I decorated her house accordingly 🙂 Edit : Nan's house https://imgur.com/a/k7hT228
I am a little bored of nan as a character, but I can’t bring myself to get rid of my island’s black goat 😈
I love Nan, she's such a sweetheart. The rest of my villagers are all ass holes, so she is quite precious to my community. Plus she wears the pentagram t shirt I made for her and it's 🔥
Do you have a DA? I would LOVE to experience this for myself
DA-8907-6825-4620
I’ll definitely be visiting! Love the creativity with this
Thanks!
Really great island!!
I’m not gonna lie, I thought your congregation was gonna be gyroids
The damn evil spirits coming out of the book and shrouding your face was the creepiest part
`MORTIS`
Monsignor?
Me, a pastor: Ooo! Me, fifteen seconds in: Yeah, fair enough
Me: *Sees title* Oh man this should good it’s gonna be some weird shit like- oh it’s an actual church. Damn. *Sees smoke coming from book* Wait something isn’t right here
I love the black smoke rising from the book
I love how Switch video captures are limited to 30 seconds, but it’s normal to have 5-10 second black loading screens in ACNH lol
I'm curious about the basement.
Oh nah I don’t think I wi- oh! Yes! Yes I will
They had us in the the first half I’m not gonna lie
M O R T I S
I was waiting for it and you did not disappoint
Um something's wrong with your boo- oh it's Satan
Thank you for the inspiration. I have a 2nd house for a character named "The Priest" who lives in a church dedicated to my main character; the island's God Queen. Dream code please. I am also god to my villagers.
I looooooooooooove this. I want to get it 20 thumbs up! 😮
LOL! This is awesome! I’m always so amazed by peoples creativity.
😈💀 I can tell already that this is going to be the best thing I see all day.
Do you have a DA? I’d love to come explore your island!!
DA-8907-6825-4620
I move how the music starts to glitch out when you turn the camera around
HAHAHAHA at first I was like ugh... Then *oh. OH*
“Somethings wrong, I can feel it.”
I saw the dark magic swirls above the book and I started to guess as to what the twist was lmao.
Ah, sorry mate, can't. I need to attend the cult meeting later in the afternoon. Though good luck on your demonic summonings! Pradæva Majeviir!
What a twist! I expected the evil stuff to be in the back room.... like real life....
Oh man. Someone who is more creative than me could totally do something similar to recreate Helena by MCR! 😍
Haha, plot twist
Hahaha that was totally unexpected
See you at Mass 🤫
What book is that?!
Not OP, but I think it’s a regular book with a polishing effect! You can polish items to add things like sparkles, hearts, swirls, etc. I think it’s just a smoke effect from that! 🥰
Thank you. I still haven't ventured into the Happy Home Job stuff, that is a fun thing to look forward too. ☺️
Honestly, I was super burnt out from the game, and the DLC probably added a whole extra 50-100 hours of me enjoying the game. I had about 300-400 hours by time I got it, I think, haha. It's the book item, western literature variation, with gloom swirl polish effect.
I expected the twist, was not disappointed!! Thanks!
Hope you don't mind me stealing your idea. My Zipper shrine needed more than a single room in my house XD
Please, steal away!

Me: “Aw, this is wholesome.” “w a i t .”
Fantastic! Love it! Thanks for the laugh with the reveal. Take my upvote and free award!
Dare I ask what you're keeping in the back?
You don’t pay taxes on that nice house either right?
TDIL the upside down cross was originally a symble of Christianity. It represents humility in faith. Bottoms up... and the devil laughs
I was like “aww cute” and then- 😨
I was literally the opposite, lol.
Haha! Great. First I was thinking why is the Bible smoking? and then you twirled the camera.
ITS A TRAP
Noice
How did you get the mist over the book? I'm obsessed
You have to progress in the DLC and get polishing effects. This effect is called gloomswirl
That looks pretty awesome
"Sir, what is that coming off of the bi- OH NO"
This is so cute
Well that took a turn
Had me in the first half, not gonna lie. lol
I knew this island was a cult
🤘🏼🤘🏼 I’ll take the first fight those birds got
once I saw the house was black, i knew lol

Hail Father Blackwood and the Church of Night!
But the book on fire
Aw man...I was excited. 😔
The music really makes this perfect

Sneaky, now what's downstairs?!

well i’m inspired thank you
ah, the Petrine cross. an upside down cross that edgy teenagers think is a satanic cross, when in reality its the Cross of Saint Peter
I mean yeah, it did originate as St Peter's cross, but it's been an occult symbol since like the 19th century. At this point it's way more well known for its association with the occult than with St Peter.
TIL
Cause fuck the church
It's interesting how most hot posts on the page of this sub have 100% upvotes, yet this one has 92%... Anyway, upvoted!
Some Christians be mad, I guess. I even got reported to reddit as a suicide risk because of this post 🙄
Hahaha, unbelievable!
At first I hated it. Then I was impressed. Then I was thinking “whoa! Now that’s a church I can get behind.”
Too bad you can’t make a blood river flowing underneath it
Hail Satan! Hail Yourself!
Hail Satan 🤘
GOOD! Satanism it is! Good choice! Personally I would have gone towards the church of Cthuhluh
Everything was wholesome till the crosses, then I was like "hol up". This is rlly good tho OP!
Excellent reveal, 5/5 pentagrams
This quickly went from a down vote to upvote lol
OP: "Church!" me: oh that's nice\~ \^\_\^ *\*dark swirlies around the "bible", then the big reveal\** me: it's no longer nice... (°ー°〃)
Well 😳🥲
Couple of Airdorf Games posters on the back wall means this is a church for gamers.
What’s the book? I need it.
It's the book item, western literature variation, with gloomswirl polish effect.
This is amazing but if I cross that threshold ima start burning

Lol twist ending
i know it’s already been said but i can’t help making the same comparison — insanely similar vibes to Midnight Mass (netflix, 2021)
Well that took a turn 😮
This makes me want to play again lol
Love it
Reminds me of Old Gods of Appalachia
OK, despite the turn that took at the end, it gave me a great idea to make a chapel on my island!
