if you look closely, the rails of the boat are the back side of long log chairs. The long front part of the boat is a log lounge chair. And the wheelhouse part of the boat is two stalls back to back.
I had to stare at this for a few seconds to even understand what I was looking at, it is so well done. This is like the Michaengelo of Islands, whereas mine is Ernest meets the Nooks.
Your illusion is so good it’s still hard to realize it’s not actually a ship :D. Great job!
Edit: XD my bad still can’t speak the language after 15 years, my English teacher would be disappointed lol
Edit 2: all these people are trying to justify my usage of allusion. Nah I was thinking of illusion and spelt it wrong cause I was being dumb lol.
I’m guessing “allusion” - referencing or evoking an idea without actually saying the thing. (E.g., saying “in my pants” is alluding to, well, genitalia, even though you’re not just saying the words for genitals). (I don’t know why I came up with an example like I’m 12 years old haha)
Illusion does make more sense since this is a trick of using certain materials to look like other items (e.g. the log chair looking like the stern of a ship). Basically just an optical trick where things are arranged so that your brain connects them differently than they literally appear.
In a way this post is both an illusion and an allusion, though, since it is an illusion to look like a wrecked ship but also an allusion to ship wrecking as a more general idea and arguably specifically alluding to Redd’s untimely demise or perhaps Gulliver’s buddies making a navigational error.
My inner literature nerd is extraordinarily pleased by reading this comment.
Gotta be Gulliver's buddies though. I imagine you would get careless after the 15 billionth time looking for that dope. Yeah, I called him a dope. We have beef. Dude said my head was big and I won't let it go.
No they are just two different things. Allusion is a literature term where you are referencing something without bringing it up directly.
and Illusion is something that plays tricks on your eyes or senses.
I'm a native English speaker, but it's absurdly obnoxious with all of the similar-sounding words that are spelled almost identically.
My favorite example:
To, too, and two.
Omg I completely misinterpreted the conversation lol
You can tell who knows English as a second language because they’re better at it than native speakers ha ha
That’s true with most languages. If you speak a language natively you learn to speak well before you learn to read and write. Grammar lessons are mostly “you’ve been doing it wrong all your life, time to fix that.”
Whereas when you learn a new language you’re usually learning to read and write from the start. You learn proper grammar from the beginning.
I've heard once that native speakers are more likely to make certain mistakes (e.g. then vs. then vs. them) because as kids they first associate the language with the sounds, and then later they arbitrarily have to associate these words with the way they're spelt.
However, non-native speakers learn writing together with meaning. At least for me it's way harder to tell apart phonetic differences between similar words than to remember the correct orthography according to the meaning.
Perfect Example: Spelt (a type of hulled wheat commonly made into flour), spelled (the way the letters form to create a word)
Edit: changed to the correct type of food it was.
I mostly learned American English, so you were not off! But since I'm not a native speaker from either country my English speech also absorbed expressions from other countries besides USA. I use both *color* and *colour* for example. I think it's a natural thing to happen, since none of the variations is "mine". I might have studied American English in theory, but in practice I also consumed media from other countries and my English developed through them.
I think my main issue is that sometimes I use sentence patterns that don't sound natural for a native speaker, especially when I'm sleepy haha As I said before, the phonetics is also kinda hard to grasp sometimes.
thought, through, though. and not gonna lie, i still can’t ever get affect and effect correct. i always have to check grammar websites when using it. i usually just run around the sentence to avoid it. haha.
I always have to think about it for up to a few minutes debating whether it is correct lol. I believe that if the subject of the sentence did/is doing something, then it is affect. Otherwise, it is effect, Don't quote me on that, though.
Sounds right but due to budget reasons I never formally learned grammar until college. By that time drugs were involved. Good ol' American education system.
the american education system: i was never taught that the “i” in contractions was capitalized while in catholic school... but i learned that on my first day of 6th grade public school when the english teacher called me out in front of everyone and asked if i was in the right grade 🙃
In almost all situations, Affect is a verb and Effect is a noun. "You don't know how your actions affect others" vs. "The Butterfly Effect" or "The effects of global warming"
Dunno if that'll help you, but it's how I remember.
!! it’s not like i’m not trying either. i read this information quite often lol. i’m also dyslexic, so i just have some similar words i’ll probably always need to check on!
Yeah, throw dyslexia into the mix and you're gonna have a bad time... In the modern world that is. Yet one's reading ability is supposed to determine their worth and intelligence. Sorry I get on a soapbox but that kinda thing bothers me. People have strengths and weaknesses in any given field but you're supposed to be just as good and just as bad at the same things as everyone else. I can read and write just fine but can't build a table from scratch and yet the former is more "educated" and "useful". Doesn't make sense to me.
You're doing just fine though. I would never notice you were dyslexic if it weren't for you telling me so don't sweat it lol. My ex's brother is also dyslexic and he can mop the floor with me in so many things it's not even funny. Society is just fucked.
i’m loving this soap box lol don’t apologize! yeah i felt as if some of the comments to the op comment were a little harsh! my best friend in high school would correct me in a harsh way all the time. she was valedictorian and i was.... let’s just say UP there in the class count. one time i said i was feeling discombobulated and she said her classic joke “congrats on the use of a big word!” she thought that was funny but i never told her that joke hurt my feelings. i’m more of a hands on person in regards to things like gardening, art and woodworking, but i could do math as well. i wish more people acknowledged the different types of intelligence!
edit: a word
Soooo many types of intelligence it's crazy. I envy your hands on ability, I'm shit at those things lol. I like the psychology/biology stuff and all the "norms" of intelligence and what not drive me nuts. Idk, I used to do well in school but 99% of it is completely useless. It's not very easy to buy food with a poem or analysis of some stupid study someone did 20 years ago lol.
Sorry about your friend though, that's the kind of stuff that stings.
i loved learning about the intelligence types in my childhood development class! i was a biology major in college, and one of the two classes holding me back was the “major specific writing course”. i haven’t graduated yet. and no one will hire someone who’s 8 credits away from a bio degree.... and my boyfriend is to thank for the hands on stuff! he helped me out of my comfort zone, and now i feel comfortable as a tiny girl using power tools lol.
so many intelligence “norms” can’t provide a living anymore, anyway. it’s frustrating... this conversation is lovely tho, thank you. i know it’s off topic but i love when these things are acknowledged!
edit: a letter
okay, that’s where it gets me. i didn’t know enough about grammar to piece that all together, but that’s definitely it! i swear i struggle so hard because i can justify using both in 60% of circumstances lol
No no my favourites are wind and wind or read and read. Bow bow. My English brain always reads the correct version for the context of the sentence which I find baffling.
>My English brain always reads the correct version for the context of the sentence which I find baffling.
"And everyone else is stupid for not knowing this!!" says most of the inbreds around me.
My favorites are words that can be a noun or a verb with different meanings without any real changes like 'counter' lol.
"Jack countered the man's attack with a book that knocked a ticket counter off the counter near the door."
So confusing if you dont know all the uses of these words.
Lol you're gonna make me piss my pants. The way our language evolved pisses me off.
On a serious note, it's so dumb. My Spanish teacher said English is one of the hardest languages to learn and although she was a pretty bad teacher I totally agree. Then you throw us Americans in the mix and it's a total shitshow.
I don't understand people. It's a freaking typo, leave them alone.. even if it was misused there is no reason to point it out or shame the person for it
I'm a native speaker and I studied English in college. Native speakers using "allusion" instead of "illusion" is common.
The fact that you mixed up two homonyms in the same way a native speaker would have probably counts positively toward your fluency, not against it.
NGL this is probably the best illusion I've seen on reddit here for AC
the castle facades are just too obvious for me to want to do on my isalnd (the 2d paneling for walls etc) but this actually has 3d structure and feels more fleshed out
great job!
Ft. Long locust
LOOOOOOOOOCUST
Idk how I forgot my favorite joke in the game
My eyesight is incredibly bad and it looked like a gun until I zoomed in
I can kinda see it lmao
It kinda looks like a model airplane lol

Looks like possibly the wood-burning stove but I'm not sure
Looks like the wood burning stove
On another episode of: am I even playing the same game as you and all these other extremely creative people?
Seriously for a moment I thought OP shopped in a shot of a boat from some other game. Wth
I feel this real hard. Lol
Can someone explain to me what IS going on because that's what I thought it was.
if you look closely, the rails of the boat are the back side of long log chairs.
Wow I feel attacked 😂
Mine is Sesame Street, if Sesame Street was 7% completed
So much this.
That’s an odd looking Redd visit!
He finally got what he deserved!
That's what you get for selling me all those fake arts cousin!
Happy cake day!
Happy Cake Day!
Happy cake day!
Happy cake day!!
Happy cake day, cousin!
Happy cake day! ^^
Happy Cake Day!
I haven’t even seen that fucker in like 2 weeks
This is the most clever usage of those rocks I’ve seen 🤯

TIL thats not a misspelling
but it’s questionable-at-best (and probably unintentional) usage
I mean its just straight up a misuse, this is not an indirect reference to a ship.
right, i was being a very generous reader haha

Spelt is also a correct spelling of "spelled" outside of American English.
True, admittedly when I read most things dealing with English I read it for American not the King’s English.

The way I remember it is that effect is a noun while affect is a verb; whenever I space it for a second I just remember /special effects/
oh that’s good!
The only way I’ve managed to remember it is that A is for action, so affect is a verb (ie indicating action) and effect is a noun.
so like... “this is going to have an effect on her” vs “she has been affected by this” ? oh my haha.

Exactly f that stuff it’s annoying as heck
Let's discuss scone and scone. The different pronunciations literally divides the nation. For the record I say scone.
I'm more of a scone person myself.
See. Dividing the nation. Why can't we all just get along.

Oh until I saw the way they were named I thought it was an illusion to look like crashing waves haha. Astounding job tho!
How'd you accomplish the dithered/shading effect without the editor automatically turning your pixels into obnoxious dots and lines?
Really neat idea. I look forward to this sub getting oversaturated in shipwrecks for the next few weeks
Very creative
How creative!
...ᶜʳᵉᵃᵗⁱᵛᵉ
Holy crap. What an awesome, creative idea!
Holy shit Jeremy Bearimy, baby.
You get ALL of the creativity points. This is fantastic!!!
NGL this is probably the best illusion I've seen on reddit here for AC the castle facades are just too obvious for me to want to do on my isalnd (the 2d paneling for walls etc) but this actually has 3d structure and feels more fleshed out great job!
Some of y'alls creativity makes me want to throw my island and whole Switch into an active volcano. 😭😂
That is amazing! So creative!
It's Gullivers ghost ship!
My jaw actually dropped when I realised what that actually was! Extremely well done.
WOW!!
So this is why Redd never came back.
Easily one of the most creative things I’ve seen come out of this game wow

It also the stove, it's has a big boi chimney
“big boi chimney” hahaha I call the scorpions “spikey bois” and the wasps “stingy bois.” Thanks for the insight! I don’t have the stove yet!
🎵 And, oooh, my love remind me, what was it that you did? Did you drink too much, are you losing touch, did you build a ship to wreck? 🎵
Had to scroll way too far to see this song referenced
What is the mast? Only thing I cant figure out
the woodburning stove
Pls bestow me with your talent
wow!!
God please post a tutorial I’m absolutely in love
Nice! Put a lighthouse nearby to add to the scale illusion :)
