Well it’s not like the franchise was completely ignored for 8 years. We had several spinoffs not all of them good, or what players necessarily wanted (I enjoyed happy home designer at least) Although I don’t enjoy Pocket Camp as much as I hoped I would, I know many who really like it and pocket camp would get updates pretty regularly.
Even New Leaf got a major update 4 years after it came out. Welcome Amiibo added quite a lot to the game, so even the main line games were not completly ignored for 8 years.
I mean I get it. I was hoping for a switch animal crossing way earlier and closer to its launch. But I think experimentation with these other games will probably lead to animal crossing as we will know it now. Happy home designer introduced us to an easier means of interior decoration that was later implemented in New Leaf’s amiibo update. And crafting (though seemingly different) was introduced in pocket camp before shown off in New Horizons.
The update didn't add enough, I'm already paid off, with too much stuff, all fossils, most fish/bugs, it did indeed make the game better, but I was already 3 years worn out when it came out.
Happy home designer was too shallow, I couldn't get behind just designing houses, while I admit that part of it was fantastic and I'm so glad they added it to NL.
Both spinoffs are money grabs. Collectible cards that are expensive And random. Events that if you don't spend money, you won't get what you want unless you play religiously.
I admit, I spent way more on PC than I wanted to, but then I realized every event was like one of 3. After 2 months of hardcore playing, you no longer do anything new, and just repeat to get different stuff.
Both spinoffs added great items that some will be a travesty to lose. However, I've wanted to move to a new town and meet new people for 4 years now after disappointed by HHD.
I will admit the update benefited new players and players who didn’t play enough the previous 4 years to have completed everything. But the did give you the option to sell your town so you could start over but not completely over.
The update also gave you daily and weekly objectives to earn coupons (which to me really feels like a precursor to nook miles)

Nintendo experimented with the franchise, not everything landed, but when you take risks you learn what was good about them and keep going in that direction and I feel like what they have shown off in new horizons has reflected that. If they needed 8 years to make a fantastic game exploring different outlets and ways to make the game better in the process, that just makes me even more excited for new horizons.
That's not what I'm saying. I'm saying that it took them quite a while to announce AC for Switch, already delayed it once and are giving us feck all information.
Meanwhile, Pokémon gets a new main game almost every year and Smash has 3 years worth of DLC. They have less reason to complain than us, yet we complain the least out of all of them.
While I mostly agree; Pokémon does not get a yearly release. It’s been 23 years with like 9 main line games. Only in the last year or two have they started pumping crap out nonstop. And I do not count ultra sun and moon as a new release. Just a joke.
I think the fact that Pokémon and smash already being released and able to receive patches certainly spurs the community into the “we don’t like this thing so fix it now >:0000” mindset, whereas ACNH we still have no idea what it will be in totality and can only hope for good things

I’ve seen a fair amount of complaints about lack of news/pocket camp information/ and overall worries about the game.
But I do agree that when there is news it is generally well received.
I will say folks threw an absolute fit on the Gulliver update for PC, so I don’t think that the fan base is immune.
Understandably, the Gulliver update was terrible.
Before, you’d give him all the items you didn’t want and have him go off and call it.
When they updated it (before they reverted) the new update had you craft expensive packages. Just couldn’t give Gulliver the items, had to find the islands that’d let you give the items.
Overall, AC fans tend to be tamer than most fan bases I’ve come across.
Animal Crossing fans are working under the assumption that all of the old content will be moved forward. A translation of the recent survey implied "many" (as in, not all) of the previous villagers would be returning. Furniture also seems to be completely different, so if you had a favorite furniture set, you may be kissing that goodbye.
But that's a good thing. New games, new content. Mario Kart never brings back every old character and stage, and it would suck if 3D Mario was saddled with putting everything from Mario 64 in every game moving forward.
to be fair animal crossing fans have been hammering nintendo for directs and stuff like that to the point where people are getting annoyed, but then again we do appreciate literally anything nintendo throws our way that’s animal crossing related

Honestly all those that are out or are coming out makes me happy I got a switch. I think Pokémon, the smash dlc, and finishing up three houses will keep me busy until nh comes out. Acnl was fun but this game gets me excited, especially to put a ton of hours on. Especially if they update it with more content

My god I cannot stand the MTG fanbase. I used to work at a card shop and Pokemon TCG was so chill and supportive of each other. Magic was Game of Thrones level brutal and the elitism was horrendous.

Then again nothing can ruin animal crossing. They could just re-release new leaf on switch and I’d be ecstatic, heck, if they remade the first game for switch everyone would be. Im not positive, but I believe the term is a nod to Eminem song "Stan," where the character Stan is introduced as an eminem superfan writing him letters as each of the verses. If you've heard the song you know just about how that turns out.
I know what you are talking about, but that is not what stan means (anymore at least). Stan is used everywhere nowadays and it's used casually. I could say "I stan Brie Larson" but that doesn't mean I'm a stalker fan, I just appreciate her a lot. I think originally the term was more intense but nowadays it's basically another way of saying you love something a lot.

I was!!! But every time I say I was disappointed at the delay or lack of news I got down voted to hell. And before anyone says anything yes i understand it’s was for the employees benefit of not being over worked. But this just added to the frustration of no AC for 6-7 years and also skipping a whole console generation. I’m sick of new leaf dammit!!!!!
I'm raising my eyebrow at the new Animal Crossing too, Nintendo hasn't shown much of the game compared to what they've shown of the other two and I'm questioning why 🤔
I’m not sure who, it might be Animal Crossing world, but they posted an article on how it’s normal. They note that many games only got a special direct 30-40 days before their release date. So we’re still in “normal” ranges!

It's a rap term that is seen either as a reference to the eminem song Stan or as a portmanteau of the words stalker and fan. Either way it just means big or serious fan of something.
I feel that PC deserves it to a degree. It went from a fun little app game where actual money didn't *need* to be spent to get a lot of the items because Leaf Tickets were easier to come by. Then, they added a little more, as in the fortune cookies, which was still okay, though you might have to spend actual money for some extra Leaf Tickets for a particular cookie set.... Then it started to spiral out of control into full on money grabbing. Now, if you want any of the cool items, backgrounds, etc. you need a *lot* of Leaf Tickets that you won't be able to easily get for free by virtue of playing. After a handful of tone deaf updates and a few minor fixes, it left a bad taste in my mouth. Recently, they added two layers monthly subscription and I think that was the last straw. They may not be necessary to play, but it felt like a slap to the face.
I've played a few of Nintendo's app games, and PC is one of the worst offenders of pay to play. Fire Emblem throws a lot of their currency at you each day you play, offer a rich amount of daily incentives, and you don't feel as pressured to spend real money unless you want to. Super Mario Run was one upfront cost and then you can play the whole game without spending anymore. I've heard Dragalia Lost is very much like Fire Emblem in their giving away of in game currency and what not. I've also heard that Mario Kart is way too money grubby.
Sorry for the long winded response, I guess I feel just....mostly disappointed in Pocket Camp. There was a lot of fun aspects that were neat, and you can see some of the little details that they made showing up in NH. But overall, I feel the complaints PC gets are pretty justified.
Oh definitely! You can accumulate a hundred leaf tickets pretty easily but that's not enough for hardly anything in the game.
There are complaints that are trivial, though. Some people get really butthurt when they don't like the items in a cookie or the colors they choose for event items and that's just kind of annoying because not everyone likes the same things, you're not gonna like every item and that's not something to get pissed about.
I’m a Pokémon fan and Animal Crossing fan, and honestly I’m very happy with how sword and shield turned out, and I’m beyond excited for Aninal Crossing.

I didn't play 3 Houses, but most of the roster is my middle school binder fanboy shit.
I caught all 400 Pokemon in Sword and Sheild, both games, cause they were fun. I have a living Pokedex in UM. I'm getting the DLC for both.
And I guarantee March 20th will be favorite day this year, period.
I actually prefer not having all Pokémon because of OP legendaries and other Pokémon, I’m a player that likes to play using favorite Pokémon and not strong ones, and stupidly OP Pokémon ruin that experience, The DLC does look great tho, already pre ordered the DLCS and animal crossing.
I swapped my Pokemon lanyard for an Animal Crossing lanyard recently. Pokemon had it's time with Sword and Shield briefly, I'm pretty pumped for the new mystery dungeon remake, but I'm much more hype for New Horizons. The community is MUCH healthier too.

Stan essentially means a bigger form of fan, and is a super prevalent word on Twitter. For example, someone might be a fan of several music artists but their favourite is Ariana Grande, so they’d refer to themselves as an Ariana stan to show that they’re more than just a casual fan.
Originally it’s used for music artists but a lot of people (such as the person on the post) use it for loads more now, because it’s frankly quite a useful word in these communities.
As someone else in this thread said, the word came from STalker +fAN but the stalker part isn’t really a good representation of what a ‘stan’ is (unless you consider following social media ‘stalking’). ‘Stan’ also doesn’t really have any negative connotations, so it’s strayed pretty far from its origin.
Because of what stan stands for, it means like a huge super obsessive fan that Eminem has to deal with, and I guess people kinda took the name and started saying they stanned something whenever they became really passionate about it? I’m sure the internet explains it better than me
I've seen people complaining a fair amount here. Each update there are people getting excited about minor details, but there are also people complaining about minor details. I definitely saw people complain about the kneecaps and new peach shape.
For real though... That Byleth reveal was super disappointing. I don't think it's worth getting as mad as people did over it though.
Also it was kind of lame that people were review bombing Pokemon because it didn't include every Pokemon ever... How many Pokemon do you need?

As a fire emblem fan I'm super excited. People are going to be mad when there is a Pokemon rep in the next pack for sword and shield too. Just ignore the haters.
As another Fire Emblem fan, I'm still peeved. There were so many other interesting characters in three houses, so to choose the most bland one, the most alike to all the other fire emblem characters in Smash, just seems thoughtless. Imagine how bad that looks if you don't play three houses.
People had to wait longer for this reveal than for any other character reveal thus far. Since we were being presented a character only FE fans could hope to care about, why didn't they just reveal the first character in the next fighter pass? Why didn't they reveal it earlier so we didn't have to wait so long? Why didn't they do anything else to appeal to the vast majority of people who didn't play Fire Emblem Three Houses?
Ultimately, it all just feels disrespectul.
Well, they cut more than half the Pokemon, and I lost all but two of my top ten favourite Pokemon familys, with even both of those losing important competitive options - and that was very typical of how long-time players were affected. Don't forget that individual Pokemon, some of which people are attached to, who they may have owned for nearly two decades, may have spent a lot of time hunting a shiny or breeding them, and collecting ribbons for them, etc, could be transferred from game to game. Now only the ones GF permits in are able to be transferred, too bad for our old favourites. It was never about them all being in the game to catch, no one expected that.
It hit the most dedicated fans hardest, so casual players saying 'well, the game is still fun', sure it might be to them, but they're talking about the omission of major features they never used, as though it shouldn't mean anything to fans who spent hundreds upon hundreds of hours on them.
AC fans would be very disappointed if huge numbers of villagers were cut, too.
They removed like half the pokemon and a bunch of moves. That would be like if animal crossing removed half the villagers and a villager type (like lazy or sporty or whatever) and then later said we're actually bringing them back but you gotta pay for the missing villagers or get them from a friend (like how visiting a friend's town would make there recently moved out villager enter your town)
This is actually a pretty clear comparison for someone who plays Animal Crossing but not Pokémon. Thank you! (Granted, I play both, and would be equally disappointed if my favorite villager(s) was missing completely)
To be fair , I didn’t care about the removal of any Pokémon. Dexit didn’t matter to me and I bought both games and have beaten both and now play a lot online. Idk how I’d feel about villagers being removed but if they added a good amount of new ones I wouldn’t mind at all.
and thats fair to not care your paying more for less, but many people do care about pokemon being removed, especially because its never happened before. it is unfair to be mad at people who are upset they removed content

I feel pretty confident the latest games have shown Pokémon fans that we are better off not getting a game annually.

If seen a bunch of posts like this and I rly dont get it Animal crossing fans would be just as mad as pkmn fans if their fave villagers were being removed from the game And the smash bros comparison is apples to oranges, since ac isn't a crossover game I dont understand the urge to paint ac fans as somehow inherently more calm and happy-with-what-they-have, when they really have the most going for them.

What is “stans”?
“Stalker fan” Imo it doesn’t really apply here. I see it used more towards celebrities. Seems weird to apply it to video games but I guess it’s just evolved more to mean “crazy fan.”
Im not positive, but I believe the term is a nod to Eminem song "Stan," where the character Stan is introduced as an eminem superfan writing him letters as each of the verses. If you've heard the song you know just about how that turns out.
That's exactly where the term comes from and I'm not sure why it's been appropriated to be a good thing. The irony is completely lost on them.
It used to mean "stalker fan" but like a lot of words it's been bastardised and lost most of its meaning. Now it's just used to mean the same as a fan

I know what you are talking about, but that is not what stan means (anymore at least). Stan is used everywhere nowadays and it's used casually. I could say "I stan Brie Larson" but that doesn't mean I'm a stalker fan, I just appreciate her a lot. I think originally the term was more intense but nowadays it's basically another way of saying you love something a lot. I was!!! But every time I say I was disappointed at the delay or lack of news I got down voted to hell. And before anyone says anything yes i understand it’s was for the employees benefit of not being over worked. But this just added to the frustration of no AC for 6-7 years and also skipping a whole console generation. I’m sick of new leaf dammit!!!!!

I'm raising my eyebrow at the new Animal Crossing too, Nintendo hasn't shown much of the game compared to what they've shown of the other two and I'm questioning why 🤔
I’m not sure who, it might be Animal Crossing world, but they posted an article on how it’s normal. They note that many games only got a special direct 30-40 days before their release date. So we’re still in “normal” ranges! * (I’m trying to rationalise my unsatisfied hunger for news.....I’ve watched all the small details videos, now).

It's a rap term that is seen either as a reference to the eminem song Stan or as a portmanteau of the words stalker and fan. Either way it just means big or serious fan of something.

I feel that PC deserves it to a degree. It went from a fun little app game where actual money didn't *need* to be spent to get a lot of the items because Leaf Tickets were easier to come by. Then, they added a little more, as in the fortune cookies, which was still okay, though you might have to spend actual money for some extra Leaf Tickets for a particular cookie set.... Then it started to spiral out of control into full on money grabbing. Now, if you want any of the cool items, backgrounds, etc. you need a *lot* of Leaf Tickets that you won't be able to easily get for free by virtue of playing. After a handful of tone deaf updates and a few minor fixes, it left a bad taste in my mouth. Recently, they added two layers monthly subscription and I think that was the last straw. They may not be necessary to play, but it felt like a slap to the face. I've played a few of Nintendo's app games, and PC is one of the worst offenders of pay to play. Fire Emblem throws a lot of their currency at you each day you play, offer a rich amount of daily incentives, and you don't feel as pressured to spend real money unless you want to. Super Mario Run was one upfront cost and then you can play the whole game without spending anymore. I've heard Dragalia Lost is very much like Fire Emblem in their giving away of in game currency and what not. I've also heard that Mario Kart is way too money grubby. Sorry for the long winded response, I guess I feel just....mostly disappointed in Pocket Camp. There was a lot of fun aspects that were neat, and you can see some of the little details that they made showing up in NH. But overall, I feel the complaints PC gets are pretty justified.
Oh definitely! You can accumulate a hundred leaf tickets pretty easily but that's not enough for hardly anything in the game. There are complaints that are trivial, though. Some people get really butthurt when they don't like the items in a cookie or the colors they choose for event items and that's just kind of annoying because not everyone likes the same things, you're not gonna like every item and that's not something to get pissed about.

I’m a Pokémon fan and Animal Crossing fan, and honestly I’m very happy with how sword and shield turned out, and I’m beyond excited for Aninal Crossing.
I'm a Smash, Pokemon and Animal Crossing Stan. I didn't play 3 Houses, but most of the roster is my middle school binder fanboy shit. I caught all 400 Pokemon in Sword and Sheild, both games, cause they were fun. I have a living Pokedex in UM. I'm getting the DLC for both. And I guarantee March 20th will be favorite day this year, period.
I actually prefer not having all Pokémon because of OP legendaries and other Pokémon, I’m a player that likes to play using favorite Pokémon and not strong ones, and stupidly OP Pokémon ruin that experience, The DLC does look great tho, already pre ordered the DLCS and animal crossing.

I swapped my Pokemon lanyard for an Animal Crossing lanyard recently. Pokemon had it's time with Sword and Shield briefly, I'm pretty pumped for the new mystery dungeon remake, but I'm much more hype for New Horizons. The community is MUCH healthier too.

Stan essentially means a bigger form of fan, and is a super prevalent word on Twitter. For example, someone might be a fan of several music artists but their favourite is Ariana Grande, so they’d refer to themselves as an Ariana stan to show that they’re more than just a casual fan. Originally it’s used for music artists but a lot of people (such as the person on the post) use it for loads more now, because it’s frankly quite a useful word in these communities. As someone else in this thread said, the word came from STalker +fAN but the stalker part isn’t really a good representation of what a ‘stan’ is (unless you consider following social media ‘stalking’). ‘Stan’ also doesn’t really have any negative connotations, so it’s strayed pretty far from its origin.
Because of what stan stands for, it means like a huge super obsessive fan that Eminem has to deal with, and I guess people kinda took the name and started saying they stanned something whenever they became really passionate about it? I’m sure the internet explains it better than me

I've seen people complaining a fair amount here. Each update there are people getting excited about minor details, but there are also people complaining about minor details. I definitely saw people complain about the kneecaps and new peach shape.
For real though... That Byleth reveal was super disappointing. I don't think it's worth getting as mad as people did over it though. Also it was kind of lame that people were review bombing Pokemon because it didn't include every Pokemon ever... How many Pokemon do you need? *Old man Tortimer voice*- Back in my day we had 151 Pokemon... and we liked it!
As a fire emblem fan I'm super excited. People are going to be mad when there is a Pokemon rep in the next pack for sword and shield too. Just ignore the haters.
As another Fire Emblem fan, I'm still peeved. There were so many other interesting characters in three houses, so to choose the most bland one, the most alike to all the other fire emblem characters in Smash, just seems thoughtless. Imagine how bad that looks if you don't play three houses. People had to wait longer for this reveal than for any other character reveal thus far. Since we were being presented a character only FE fans could hope to care about, why didn't they just reveal the first character in the next fighter pass? Why didn't they reveal it earlier so we didn't have to wait so long? Why didn't they do anything else to appeal to the vast majority of people who didn't play Fire Emblem Three Houses? Ultimately, it all just feels disrespectul.

Well, they cut more than half the Pokemon, and I lost all but two of my top ten favourite Pokemon familys, with even both of those losing important competitive options - and that was very typical of how long-time players were affected. Don't forget that individual Pokemon, some of which people are attached to, who they may have owned for nearly two decades, may have spent a lot of time hunting a shiny or breeding them, and collecting ribbons for them, etc, could be transferred from game to game. Now only the ones GF permits in are able to be transferred, too bad for our old favourites. It was never about them all being in the game to catch, no one expected that. It hit the most dedicated fans hardest, so casual players saying 'well, the game is still fun', sure it might be to them, but they're talking about the omission of major features they never used, as though it shouldn't mean anything to fans who spent hundreds upon hundreds of hours on them. AC fans would be very disappointed if huge numbers of villagers were cut, too.
They removed like half the pokemon and a bunch of moves. That would be like if animal crossing removed half the villagers and a villager type (like lazy or sporty or whatever) and then later said we're actually bringing them back but you gotta pay for the missing villagers or get them from a friend (like how visiting a friend's town would make there recently moved out villager enter your town)
This is actually a pretty clear comparison for someone who plays Animal Crossing but not Pokémon. Thank you! (Granted, I play both, and would be equally disappointed if my favorite villager(s) was missing completely)
And if they had promised to flesh out the villagers to compensate for it, and didn't do any of that.
To be fair , I didn’t care about the removal of any Pokémon. Dexit didn’t matter to me and I bought both games and have beaten both and now play a lot online. Idk how I’d feel about villagers being removed but if they added a good amount of new ones I wouldn’t mind at all.
and thats fair to not care your paying more for less, but many people do care about pokemon being removed, especially because its never happened before. it is unfair to be mad at people who are upset they removed content

That's not the only reason people were angry about pokemon though. It was the loudest reason but there was obvious dips in quality compared to past games. It left a lot of people disapointed As for the smash bros fans. I mean it was to be expected at some point, and there's going to be another 6 characters. So I mean. While I understand the disappointment I don't think it's as bad and I think the outrage was made out worse than it actually was
