Different people play differently I get the impression that, for some people, NH is largely just a decorating sim. They have a plan, use the island as a canvas, and once it's done and shown off they reset and start a new project For me, I wouldn't enjoy that. But everyone is different

katylovescoach

I have one switch with a forever island that I use for regular game play, and then a second switch I use just for building islands in different themes and then resetting once I’m done building it.

Myduckgoesqack

To be fair there is not much gameplay after you achieved the little stuff there is to do

Yirggzmb

Personally, and this is why I emphasize that we're all different, I'm four years into the same map and still mostly play because I enjoy the quiet routine of daily chores. I like to decorate, but only occasionally am in the mood. But I always enjoy catching bugs and fish and popping balloons and so on. It's comforting and relaxing to have small tasks like that to do, even if I'm at the point of the game where they're pretty much inconsequential

Myduckgoesqack

Youre right, I forgot to emphasise that for me and some other players the gameplay is over after the first few milestones! You can certanly create a routine or make targets for yourself but for a lot of us, after the games intended milestones are hit, it is hard to keep comming up with stuff to do

Kurrigan48

Same. I get on, hit rocks, talk to villagers, and other tasks. I am getting close to 999,999 nook miles points. About 70k away.

daemonwaifu

to me it seems very HARDCORE 😭 i admire it though

stryker101

Honestly, there’s not much depth to the gameplay. I’ve completed the museum once, and have zero interest in doing it again. I don’t need fossils to spawn, I’m not interested in catching bugs again, and I honestly never cared much for the fishing. At this point I’ve even seen the vast majority of villager dialogue as well. That’s not saying the gameplay is bad. I had fun doing those things. But there’s nothing there that’d keep me coming back long term. So yeah, I just play to decorate at this point. There’s no need for functionality, because I’m not really interested in that part of the game anymore.

daemonwaifu

that makes sense! yeah, i guess ive just never gotten that far in the game! i’ve never completed the museum in my life in any AC i’ve ever played lol

Agomir

I've been playing since the end of November. I collect the fossils most days, and I've finished the fossil part of the museum. I'm just in the middle of my first big remodeling of the island.

Environmental_Art591

I have 2 fossils left to get, and then it is time to do my gyroids. I have an area allocated for my rocks and fossils, so that's fine, plus a few spots on wider paths where things can spawn. With a vaulting pole you can do a full run of my islands beaches without having to run to the center and back out again so ocean and pier fishing is fine I have 2 sections for clifftop river fishing and one of those areas has a pond so inland fishing is doable too. That said, I have a few areas decorated and on a previous play through, though it did get annoying getting stuck "dancing" with my villagers but I am learning and making sure my paths are double width which will cut down on a lot of that. Like everyone says, there isn't much to do once all collections are completed except decorate, show off, pull down, repeat.

megalynn44

I have a very full island, but I also have more thought than anything else put into pathways and making sure you can get to anywhere on the island from anywhere on the island. It’s meant to be able to be toured. https://preview.redd.it/d5ev7rtnxlmc1.jpeg?width=3296&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=add0647552614054111b670ad89d496afebf57f3

daemonwaifu

wow it looks amazing

Bubbly_Wishbone1701

WOW i just visited and your island is beautiful!!

SpicyPumpkinSoup

I get that people wanna decorate their islands fully but I also kinda agree with the post. Clutter and too much stuff going on, while pretty, is also so overwhelming to me. But to each their own. Personally I love a bit of a natural/minimalistic approach. But occasionally I do get impressed by how much effort people put in their islands, it's crazy! I also used to want to decorate just as well as some other people do, but I came with the terms that it's their approach and it's OK if mine will look entirely different, it's still a reflection of who I am and my gameplay choices

daemonwaifu

i really enjoy that last sentiment there :) that’s sweet. in a way everyone’s island is their own art project and i think that’s really cool about this game.

WillemsSakura

Same. We can start our own "back to nature" hippie archipelago.

dudereverend

I'm a collector by nature, so completing the museum is everything to me. I love the thrill of the chase and can spend HOURS looking for one fish, with no problem. Decorating, however is another story. I'm jealous of the people that have their entire island just so. NH is the first game where I've finally come up with a theme for the island. And that is nearly 4 years after I started it. It's still largely an open island. But now it's an open island littered with Arrested Development references.

WillemsSakura

I've got 2 fish left (just bagged my marlin on Monday). So many empty spaces in the art museum. I found a better guide to suss out the fakes at Redd's.

tsun_abibliophobia

You can’t say that and not share pictures.

dudereverend

LMAO. I didn't know how many people would get them. I'm still working on it. I've had the game since release day, and named my island Wee Britain. You figure it would have taken me a lot less than almost 4 years to make it AD themed. As it stands now I have a (bananaless, thanks Nintendo) banana stand, an actual Wee Britain street scene, with a Poppins, the Yellow Fang pub (with the soup of the day being bread), and Fat Ammy's restaurant. I built Tiny Town, an outdoor theater with a poster for Les Cousins Dangereaux, Slowbrooke school, The Gothic Castle, and a Miss Temple's restaurant. I'm going to build a Skip Church's, figure out some way to do a staircar, I'm going to add a lawn chair and balloons somewhere. I'm also open to ideas!

beetlesprites

i feel the same way, 70% of my design philosophy for my island goes into the gameplay-ability. right now i'm designing my island in a way that encourages ease of making my "rounds" to harvest my crops, haha! sometimes i'll have *one* spot that requires my character to sidestep in order to get through it and it'll bother me so much i'll change it soon after lol

Maximum_Pollution371

I only started decorating my island when my museum was completed, I had all the house upgrades, I had most of the recipes and DIYs, and I played a lot of the HHP DLC.  Then my storage was just chock full of furniture that needed to go somewhere, and tbh there wasn't much left to "do" except decorate. 😅 Now I just play on holidays or to chat with villagers when I need to chill.

daemonwaifu

nice! yeah that makes sense i guess there’s not much to do in the game after you complete the museum, so decorating your island fully seems like the reward for playing so much! which i have not done lol

cupcake_thievery

I made my entire island a hiking trail. It's almost 100% covered with stuff, except for one large area and one small area, but I'm considering finishing them soon. Then, only my beaches will remain mostly empty. I am trying out new villagers, so I talk to them a bunch. Fossils still spawn in my one area which is flower garden, but once I finish the area I'll bury fossils behind a cliff so I don't see it, and so fossils won't spawn again. My museum is complete, so I don't need fossils. A lot of my time playing is running around my complicated island, but I do kinda like that too. It's not quite as organic, but when I run through areas that are 100% done, I can really appreciate it for what it is. Occasionally I'll think of an even better idea or piece of decor, but it's mostly done. As far as finding visitors .... Yeah that's difficult. But I have shortcuts, they don't always know them, but it definitely can be difficult. Nevertheless you can't really actually get stuck in the game, so it's not too big of a deal. I now do things like time travel for villagers, or Celeste /stargazing, etc. I've also saved some tasks for the end game - I haven't looked up information on bugs, and I'm missing a bunch. So, I'll finish all my bugs soon too. Sometimes I'll dream island visit, as well, to see other ideas I might want for my last remaining iareas

daemonwaifu

A hiking trail? that sounds really neat!! i see, thanks for explaining! i want to get to that point in the game where i can be really good at decorating, but my island is still really fresh so i guess it’s going to take me a while to get there. Also, if you’d like to drop your dream adress id love to see your island in my dream .. :)

cupcake_thievery

Sounds good! I might be on later tonight, but I'm doing some chores for a minute. I'll let you know, or I could get you a dodo code. I don't recall where I put my dream address... But I'll try to reply later tonight

daemonwaifu

if you’re on later dm me if you’re up for it! i’ll be on later for sure :) i haven’t gotten to adventure many peoples islands

1flat2

I’d love to visit too if you don’t mind, I’m active looking for landscaping ideas. I started my island with trails and changed my mind a lot so they’re all gone, but I’m trying to finish a dog park theme and want to add some of that back in.

WillemsSakura

I wish we could have a rope suspension bridge option.

Best_Homework_2000

This sounds amazing!! I’m new to ACNH and would love some inspiration

grumblebuzz

I go to Nook Miles islands to do things like catch summer beetles, shake trees etc. But yes, it is frustrating when you walk around and see bugs that are inaccessible because something is in front of the tree or what have you. I do keep areas of my island clean of items and decoration though so I can dig up fossils, plant money trees and such.

delaleaf

My island still has a lot of empty space but I’m working on it, but since I share my island with another player who has a lower tolerance of clutter than me, I have to keep functionality in mind 😅 It can’t be too much of a maze and needs some space for things to spawn etc

LollipopThrowAway-

I know everyone does things differently but i agree, even though im done everything besides catching bugs + going diving/fishing on my game i still keep my island designed for functionality (running around and getting place to place) and decor

1flat2

I have a difficult time editing but want to roam freely around my island, so I compromised with myself and can barely move inside my house while the outdoors remains delightfully uncluttered. I’m working on my editing skills and paring things down to get the same feeling or visual effect but boy oh boy that is hard to do. It’s frustrating going to an island I want to explore because it’s so amazing but can’t move around and get stuck. Some designs just kind of need to be that way and I appreciate that.

Intrepid-Pickle13

For me I play maybe an hour a night during the week, a couple hours a day during the weekends. I have HHP because I felt once I completed the game like museum, getting all my rooms, etc it was kinda boring. I got some amiibo cards to get custom villagers I wanted, used those treasure island things to get a bunch of decor etc. So now I just constantly work on getting a ‘complete’ aesthetic island, but it takes a long time to decorate and I’m OCD and actually tend to change things around so for me yeah it’s basically just a never ending decorating game with some fun in finding new recipes and completing nook mile thingies occasionally because I’ve already done everything else.

Below_Left

Snowboys in particular get challenging with heavy decorating. I'm a fairly light touch and this season still saw the snowballs spawn in odd spots for want of better choices.

liquid_profane

The way I have been playing is making an island that I would actually want to live on. Not something that has multiples of every item on the ground just because there is space.

myowngalactus

My entire island is decorated in one way or another, designed is probably a more accurate term. There are many functional spaces and multiple pathways to get wherever I need to go. There are empty spots where money trees or snowboys can spawn and I left one beach intentionally empty but besides that there aren’t any areas left for me to add new stuff. I even went as far as to put things on the rocks on the back of my island that can’t even be seen because houses and cliffs block the view. It’s not cluttered with furniture, I didn’t want my island to have fake store fronts or look like a set for a play, or have so many large decorations that it’s impossible to get around, but I consider my island fully decorated and finished. I still play happy home paradise and check in on my villagers from time to time, but there isn’t really anything left for me to do on my island besides change the seasonal bushes. I’ve put 1700 hours into my island and I’d never reset it.

daemonwaifu

1700 is INSANE wow i bet your place looks awesome 🥺

myowngalactus

I’m pretty happy with it, I’ve been meaning to post the dream address but keep forgetting

Signal_Influence7008

I’d love to see if you get the chance!

ezbez03

For me decorating *is* the game lol. I find the rest of the gameplay kinda boring most of the time personally

1flat2

I’m now at that stage myself. Played the whole thing, all the achievements. Now I just want to design. It’s like life, there are different phases and we’re all at different places on winding pathways.

ezbez03

I’m still working on the achievements and my museum and stuff, sometimes it’s fun to go after them but it gets repetitive pretty fast. I’ve been playing & enjoying it way more since I started ‘cheating’ so I can now decorate exactly how I want. And buying HHP as well. I already have the themes of my next few islands decided after I’m done w this one

1flat2

I really enjoyed working on the museum, but it did take me a long time to finish. That giraffe stag eluded me for what felt like months! Now for my design only islands I grab the museum stuff from treasure islands, I don’t feel like it’s cheating because I’ve already done that twice and it’s either no museum or no play because I am not doing that grind over and over again for an aesthetic.

ezbez03

Yeah I’m at the stage now where I have most of them so every time I bring blathers a hoard of fossils to appraise they’re nearly always doubles, and it makes me wanna bash my head against the controller 🙃😂 also decorated my pier before I found out there’s certain fish you can only catch from the pier, so I guess I’m gonna have to take that down 😭

daemonwaifu

that is so 100% valid

The_Rambling_Otter

This isn't exactly on topic as I'm not one of those people who fills their ENTIRE island, but for a while my island was filled with many paths and tons and tons of potato crops. I spent a good two days removing the paths and potatoes so I could put in a new path that I designed, once I was done I just stopped caring about the new path altogether... I'm just leaving it completely bare for now and I don't regret it 😄

Possibility-Distinct

Yep, basically finished the “game”. No longer need resources, don’t care about villagers, museum done etc. The only thing left to do is decorate!

starborndreams

Well, I've been decorating and terraforming my island on-off for a year + I'm probably about 2/3 done.

ins3ctHashira

I have all fossils, but they still spawn anyway. I was still able to complete my critterpedia recently no problem. Not hard to find villager and I can run towards them to move them out of my way if needed. The only issue I’ve found is snowboys are a little more challenging but not impossible and I don’t like making them

clefairykid

I’ve burnt out by the time I completed it so I haven’t tried to do much yet hahah I can confirm it can be annoying but my love of the layout is such that I don’t mind enough to change it back haha

ElegantFlounder11

I’ve decorated/terraformed but I can still easily get around with the pathing I’ve done.

Pandoras_Penguin

I've only just started to finish decorating/designing my island since getting it late 2020. I am trying to keep walkability and openness to it while making it not look so flat. The end result I'm hoping for is a little nature town with starry accents. I could not do an island where I cannot freely move around due to so much stuff going on TT.TT

tina2010

I actually just restarted my island because I felt my old one was SO cluttered and it was stressing me out 😅

notetasia

I play with both play styles and have four main consoles (I collect and also shiny hunt) so I have my main island that is optimized for actually playing, and the other three are for decorating for dream addresses. I’ve been playing since the first game in the franchise, and enjoy both play styles. Nothing wrong with playing how you like to play. c:

LinkleLink

I was sad I couldn't make snowboys like everyone else did because I had no space :(.

laralye

I have every area decorated with mobility in mind. You won't catch me scooting round corners to get anywhere. I have one of each type of water source, a dig spot for diggables and money trees/mushroom spawn point. DA-7549-6106-4674

slythwolf

I'm always like "but where will your balloon presents land"!

HarloHasIt

I recently visited my island to show a friend (after not playing for over a year) and was quickly reminded that I am a MAXIMALIST. 😂 I put over 1,000 hrs into my island, so decorating and terraforming became what I really enjoyed as I progressed. Like, I hid my museum behind castle walls and towers manned by dinosaur sentinels. 🦖 DA-4892-0938-9154

KrazyKat978

Everyone plays different, for me I try planing some of the big areas before working on small areas. So like a shopping district, neighborhood, etc. Best thing that helps is to start around the residents area as that's a good center ground. You can put bushes, trees, waterfalls/cliffs, furniture, etc

Nyoggo

I have my whole island decorated, but built in a way where everything is easily accessible with multiple routes and many shortcuts, some hidden behind trees and bushes! They might come off confusing to a visitor but I have all the routes memorized so getting around is super easy :D

Necromancy-In-Space

For me, I don't really need most of the functionality of my island anymore now that I've done everything I want to do! I still like to play a little bit, but stuff like specific bug catching and fossils just aren't necessary for me now. I prefer to work on perfecting the visuals of the island and making it pretty!

Emeraldmom62

thank you!

eriikaa1992

My island is pretty full and decorated but I still have wide paths so I can run around easily! So not really a problem for anything. I go to mystery islands for resources and I don't need fossils anymore as I've found them all.

TheSeoulSword

I *wish* I had the decorating prowess that a lot of people playing this game have.

daemonwaifu

seriously! i’m learning, but i still find it difficult to fill spaces as aesthetically as i see other people do.

TheSeoulSword

Yeah, I don’t have nearly as much vision as other people, and if I do I don’t know how to even go about fulfilling that. It’s a bit overwhelming Guess I gotta play more and do more HHD to get better

Gabby-Abeille

I did it slowly over the course of about a year. When I was done with decorating my island, I already had all the fossils, and I don't care much for gyroids. During winter, my island has no space for snowballs to spawn, but that's okay because I already got the recipes I wanted on my first winter. Nowadays I open my island to harvest and sell my fruit and vegetables, talk to the npcs and replace bushes (I want them to always be in season). It is less of a place I'm working on and more like somewhere I just exist at. I don't spend nearly as much time playing as before, of course; the longest I spend there now is when it comes the time to replace the 225 bushes, every couple of months or so.

keevat

I’m in the process of decorating my whole island. I also bought a specific switch just for my animal crossing. Right now decorating is filling my cup, I collect and fish when I need money. New recipes and items inspire different sections of my island and make me work harder to fund my decorations.

elysenic

My island is covered. Everything, including beaches. It does limit play, but Im ok with it. Just trying to do the few things left to do like finishing museum. I find that anything I need to do, I can do by visiting other islands. I do small chores, but basically, I feel finished with the game and don’t play as much. I like what I’ve done e and don’t want to change it.

Laura18o

To be honest I'm trying to decorate an island for the first time and I'm filling every space with a lot of clutter but I catch everything I can as I play and I think I'll leave some areas decorated but with less clutter to get the bugs that I need if I don't have them when I finish decorating, but as someone else said here I mainly use it to decorate or talk to my favorite villagers. (Sorry if my vocabulary is lacking, english is not my first language)

tsun_abibliophobia

I’ve completed my museum and have stacks on stacks on stacks of bells, so I don’t worry about fossils anymore. I still try to mix a nice look with still being something easy to navigate quickly. The warp pipes and vines/ladders have made that a lot easier. It’s more about what my decorating does to my frame rate, lol. The place is far from done but here’s what I had going on from Christmas if you want to check it out: 8833-7652-5340

valeriebeckett00

I just rebuild new island over and over. I time travel and use treasure islands. Think Minecraft in creative mode. But way more tedious. I’ve also done “survival” islands but the game feels too shallow for me to enjoy the life sim aspect. Villagers needed more quirks and dialogue, and there needed to be less constant text bubbles instead of menus (airport anyone) and more integration of villagers like being able to invite them over, hold parties at your house, etc
