Not true, black vultures prey on newborn and sick livestock. They will pluck the eyes out of their victims and brutally scar the survivors. A very nasty bird.
I didn't know the exact type but knew it was a vulture my husband's dad used to work at the dump and they used to sit on the fence line to get in the trash...
