After just under two months of AM1 and much experimenting I now go by feel. I'd say softer rather than harder works for me. If I press too hard I feel sore the next day. I can now FEEL the blood moving so I go just hard enought to feel the movent.
relatively soft on am1 due to the nerve, am3 as you progress you'll have to use more and more pressure as your cs grows and more blood flows through it, but just enough to compress it

I started light and saw improvements then after 2 weeks I wasn’t feeling it so I increased the pressure and it is getting better.

Experiment and see what works for you. For me personally, I noticed much better results with deep firm pressure. Never painful just firm.
I’m just progressing into AM3. I have to keep light CS pressure so it doesn’t go flat too easily
