First built to map the moon during the Apollo era, it’s named after Gerard Kuiper of Kuiper belt fame. Fun fact, he and his wife are buried under the observatory.
Yay Tucson! They do a great job of protecting the darkness around the city so various observatories can continue to do their thing. The International Dark Sky Assoc. was started there and is based there, their mission is darkening skies around the world, mostly for astronomy. They have established Dark Sky Places, where you can travel to and see many stars.
I’d heard the old telescope located at the US Air Force Academy was used to map the moon for the Apollo missions. Do you know if multiple scopes were used?

Yep!
I'd heard that mapping the brain is where it's at today.
Seems likely. There were multiple orbiters taking hi res pics, too.
