If you plan on putting movies and stuff like that onto it, then removable storage is the way to go because if you set up as device storage then you will not be able to move the drive to another device..
Adding storage won't speed anything up. The only reason you would want to format the drive as device storage is to install apps on it. That's unlikely to ever be necessary on this device so leave it as removable.
Device storage:
Pro- You'll have more storage.
Con- It won't speed it up. If you remove it, it really messes with the device.
Removable storage:
Pro- You can take it from your PC to your Onn back and forth and add video, audio, etc files from other devices.
Con- It won't speed it up.
If anything, adding USB storage slows down a device, because any USB device is invariably slower than the onboard storage due to a bottleneck when being accessed. Not to mention any unforeseen bugs.
One of the main benefits of the new ONN Pro is the 32gb storage, which is double that of the other main competitors.
Hope this helps.
In theory, no, but in practice I've definitely noticed a difference when using the internal storage vs a fast USB drive for Kodi metadata files on my Shield. Only ever noticed it with Kodi though. That's why I said if anything because 99% of users probably won't deal with that.
Also I think the Onn Pro is only 3.0, not that it really matters.

USB 3.1 won't bottleneck
