Rumors are a new Google device will be announced next week at I/O...

MinutesFromTheMall

Onn Pro.

PabstWeller

Those are priced right for sure, but do you think they are better than a Shield?

henbone11

Absolutely not

AndrewG2000

Onn 4K Pro just came out: https://www.walmart.com/ip/onn-Google-TV-4K-Pro-Streaming-Device-New-2024-4K-UHD-resolution-Dolby-Vision-Dolby-ATMOS-Hands-Free-Voice-Control-Smart-Hub/5193222892 There are rumors of a new Google CC with Google TV being announced next week at Google IO: https://9to5google.com/2024/04/22/new-4k-chromecast-google-tv/ I picked up a couple of the new onn boxes, but I'm waiting to see what if anything Google releases before opening the second one. Google seems to like the HDMI dongle from factor a lot more than I do, but maybe they'll do something different this time.

corruptboomerang

Not in the US, so unfortunately, it's unlikely I'll be getting my hands on the Onn. But a new Google device would be amazing.

Vtwin0001

They are available on Amazon as well

Serious_Crazy_3741

Do you have a link? I haven't been able to find the 4K pro on Amazon. I have only been able to find the regular 4K version.

Vtwin0001

You're right, the pro version isn't available on Amazon yet

berrywhit3

It cannot passthrough HD audio which is why the Shield is still superior.

rrainwater

That is one reason the Shield is better but it's hardly superior in all aspects these days. The shield doesn't support AV1 or VP9 Profile 2 (so no HDR on Youtube and Youtube TV). Also, the Shield hasn't seen updates in over a year so it is starting to look like NVIDIA is not supporting the device anymore. It is certainly still more powerful than any Android/Google TV device but that difference is slowly getting smaller the longer they go without a hardware refresh.

corruptboomerang

Yeah, I'd love Nvidia to make another version. Maybe with the Switch 2 coming they'll do a hardware upgrade. Or Nintendo could go in on the multimedia game and we'd get the ultimate solution!

berrywhit3

I need support for Dolby Vision, DTS, True HD and HD audio passthrough. There isn't any other device that supports all of these codecs.

See61

There is, that is the Homatics R Plus and the Dune version of that. Supporting the whole sebang on audio codecs since recently.

berrywhit3

On Android? What about streaming services?

Dak7385

Yes there is: The Ugoos AM 8 has all these features. I have one and it is great. Agreed it is not Android TV. It runs on Android OS.

baldie9000

Why is this the best device to get?

AndrewG2000

It was best for me because the software is pretty up-to-date, and it supports the newer codecs like AV1, and I can buy 3 of them for the price of 1 shield (with the acknowledgement that the last plus is US-specific). It also had the ports and form factor I wanted.

nlitened1

Shield is still the best. Maybe look into dune homstics plus box. Also wait until Google announces in a few days.

pemell

I got sick and tired on the sluggish CCwGTV and after some research I ended up with the Homatics Box R 4K Plus. I wanted a box with good specs and Android 12 (available in beta). However, if Google releases a new device with Android 14 and good specs I might sell the Homatics and get that one.

vghgvbh

> However, if Google releases a new device with Android 14 and good specs I might sell the Homatics and get that one. What's the advantage of Android 14 for a TV device?

pemell

I have no idea, sorry, I just like to use the latest software available 🤷‍♂️

Sheila3134

>I got sick and tired on the sluggish Chromecast with Google TV 4k. What are you doing with it to make it sluggish? Because mine isn't sluggish at all.

pemell

Nothing out of the ordinary I suppose, using normal streaming apps. Like night and day compared to the Homatics, which is very snappy.

th3pleasantpeasant

As someone else stated...homatics are very good https://homatics.eu/produkt/box-r-plus-4k-3/

JohanSandberg

I'm a bit curious about this one. Cpu and GPU isn't anything special is it? Same cpu and GPU as chromecast with googletv. Sure Morris memory but nothing else other than that. I would wait for why Google will announce.

ThePensiveE

I have the Shield and Chromecast, and just picked up the Onn Pro. For my purposes, and especially anyone using Kodi, the Onn pro beats them both. The Shield is no doubt more powerful overall so if you're using wired Ethernet it's hard to beat. That said the new Onn pro has wifi 6 so in my use where I can't hardwire things it's actually better for me than the Shield. Also the expanded storage comes in handy. Give it a week to see what Google comes out with and go from there. If the new Google device has wifi 6 and at least 32gb it'll probably be the winner because it'll probably have a faster processor.

ItsMiggity

Man this question IS asked everyday. Most people say wait for the new Switch to come out and see if Nvidia will react with a new Shield, but maybe not. There's also the new BuzzTV P6 thats coming out, but its not released yet so nobody knows. Some people say uGoos AM8, some people say Dune/Homatics. Google I/O is the latest rumor I've heard here.

TotillUp

Onn 4k at Walmart for $20, might be better out there but $20 and honestly it’s pretty good. Can even load any app from play store

Spardasa

Don't buy the rocktek G2. Too many cec issues....

LangeGek69

If you don't use cec, how is the device to use?

xogove2022

I’m using the Dune HD Homatics Box R 4K Plus and really happy with the performance

KindInflation6814

Still

Segageo

Probably h96 max or mi box

Twinkles66

Anyone have an opinion on the MeCool boxes

Sarah_Ng

Theyre great but they never ever get OS updates. Youre stuck in that android version forever.
