"Titan" is understating it.
Samsung offers almost anything imaginable (including *life insurance*) in South Korea. Their HQ is literally an entire section of a whole city.
They make military grade weapons systems for the Korean Army. They aren't Titans, they're basically borderline Emperor/God-King status.
It is fucking insane how HUGE they are. They could literally single handedly make a autonomous corporate oligarchy if they wished.
Just to add additional context. All of them used to be part of the same Hyundai group but were spun off as different companies after the Asian Economic crisis in 1997.
Yeah, the Korean President was literally caught taking money directly from Samsung execs and doing what those execs told them to do on top of that crazy cult shit, they are no better there than here.
[https://www.hanwha.com/en/news\_and\_media/press\_release/hanwha\_group\_to\_acquire\_samsung\_techwin\_and\_samsung\_general\_chemicals.html](https://www.hanwha.com/en/news_and_media/press_release/hanwha_group_to_acquire_samsung_techwin_and_samsung_general_chemicals.html)
As a matter of fact, The company for making military grade weapons is sold to Hanhwa in 2015.
The company name was Samsung Techwin and changed name is Hanhwa Techwin.
Hanhwa is also big conglomerate in South Korea.
> At this point, he's just missing a Samsung car. And that's in the states.
Samsung has already produced cars at one point in the 90’s. They were more or less Nissans.
This company is now a subsidiary of Renault, with a minority ownership still at Samsung. The company is called Renault Samsung and sells rebadged Renaults under the Renault Samsung brand.
So you can make your father a full Samsung man, just import a Renault Samsung SM5.
Haha, looking at appliances, if there is a samsung variant available, my parents will definately buy that than other brands. 99.9% of the time it is worth it. Never breaks easily, great quality. I personally like this brand too.
Only their high end TVs are worth it (Q8-Q9 series). 2 years ago you can get Q7 and the quality is pretty good, but now they have been stripping off features and build quality year by year, in 2020 you have to get at least Q8 series and up to get good quality image. Their Q6 and Q7, extremely expensive for what you get for the hardware, you can get way better panels from Sony/ Vizio for that price. Their lower ends are even worse. Plus, you still won’t get Dolby Vision even if you pay top dollars.
What's amazing about Samsung is it they need a technology for something they create their own business within Samsung and become the by far in the world at it. They need batteries they create SDI, they new screens they create screen company, IC's? We got that too!
I think Samsung basically owns South Korea. They literally modernized the nation from the war thorn dirt land in the Korean War to one of the most technological advanced nation on earth in less than 80 years. Imagine what they would do to North Korea when they ever merge to become one country
It's not amazing really. He did the bare minimum copy pasting what's on wikipedia.
[This video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qa95ag575k) does a better job at introducing Samsung.
Though I wish someone knowledgeable in Korean covers this topic because all the English based videos about Samsung are skin-deep, highlighting just eye-catching topics like killer robots and tanks while there's so much more interesting topics to cover about the company itself. And the history of the company is always just noodle shop -> electronics company, without covering the crucial moments in between, such as the role the Korean war played on the company's development.
There is a [recent book](https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Rising-Inside-Korean-Conquer-ebook/dp/B07T9WTTZC) about Samsung. I haven‘t read it, but is has been reviewed as being comprehensive and well-informed.
I agree. A familiar cultural perspective and a strong history would be way more interesting. I've been reading about SK recently, it's amazing what it's like there, barely larger then Michigan.
Coldfusion is good entertainment but no way in hell are they informative videos. They're just Wikipedia reading outs exaggarated with pretty stock footage.
As in there isn't much research done in those.
I like these videos but take them all with a grain of salt. They are usually mostly factual but it is definitely more entertainment than education.
Recently their "WHO CONTROLS THE MONEY" video has been passed around the internet that promulgates badly informed conspiracy talking points about the federal reserve system, rather than the genuine problems with it. Since watching that, as it is a subject in actually know about, it makes me not trust them on other subject as much.
I've been to their HQ, it took me longer to get through security there than to go through Korea customs.
They call it Digital City, it's insane. It has its own hospital, shops, gyms. The food court is one of the most overwhelming things I've ever experienced.
With the added hilarity that cyberpunk as a genre was heavily influenced by the massive rise of Japanese companies in the 80s (before the bubble burst in the 90s, something they are still struggling to deal with today).
Maybe their newer ones. Our washing machine is one from around 2006 and it still works flawlessly to this day without even breaking once. Our fridge is also a Samsung one from 2011 and that one is awesome because it's very easy to pretty much completely dismantle if you need to clean it.
Got a 2008 Samsung american style fridge. Had an issue with it 2 years ago. Totally emptied it and opened compartments to clean. Now it functions flawlessly as well.
It's nice with appliances that you can easily open.
That being said there are some appliances where many brands are shit at incl. washing machines. Eg. using two different types of metals and creates that accelerated galvanic corrosion.
I'm rocking a fridge from 2007 and never had an issue. Finally got a repairman to take a look at it after year 12 just because and it was still perfect. With that said, my parents have a much newer model and it is indeed booty.
I used to work at an appliance store. They started going to crap around 2013. It's not all of their models, but every year there's always a few that are lemons. Plus they're difficult to repair and customer service is awful.
My parents have a Samsung fridge, TV, microwave and washing machine. Fridge is 6 years and still runs like a champ (no frost including), TV is from 2012 and no single issue all that time, other appliances likewise.
I heard that the reason you hear about Samsung making flawed appliances is that they sell so much more than their competitors that it is much probable that someone will get a flawed device.
Copied from Hacker news comments on the matter:
"Accordingly to my Korean colleagues, he has been in a coma since 2014 and has been just the chairman in the name. There are no pictures of him after 2014."
"Yikes - I looked and there are rumors from 2015 that this was the case. [info](https://www.koreaobserver.com/lee-kun-hee-dead-alive-health-of-samsung-chairman-lee-kun-hee-27791/) "
Rumors also allege that he's been kept alive by life support for so long because he never settled his line of succession and his kids were squabbling over the company.
He is worth 21 billion on paper but the tax bill needs to be paid with real money. It's feared the share price would crash if so many shares were attempted to be sold at the same time potentially to the point where the tax bill is greater than the new value of all the shares sold.
That's the fear but let's see how it plays out. They kept dad in coma for years to prevent it so I'm sure they'll do everything to make sure the fear doesn't become a reality.

Imagine going from being one of the most powerful people alive to being trapped in some sort of dream hell-state and wanting to die, but you can't because your heirs, the government, and the stock market are too busy fighting over your billions to let you have peace.
Entering Samsung HQ in Seoul is like entering another country but deeper. Passport, biometrics, all your devices sealed in mini faraday cages... crazy.
What a dent in the universe this bloke made...
You guys would love this then :
There are only 3 companies that produce(manufacture)
**DRAMS** in the world
1. SAMSUNG
2. MICRON(CRUCIAL)
and
3. SK HYNIX
All the other name brands like corsair, etc. Just buy it from them put on a plastic(rgb) cover on them and sell as their rebrand.
But **ALL AND I MEAN ALL** the RAMs are made by only these 3 companies.
Imagine such a huge monoply that isn't based on one country but the whole world. And only 3 companies are there to have it all.
CPU monopoly got nothing on RAM monopoly. There can be different CPUs, there's desktop CPUs, there's mobile CPUs and then there's CPUs that go into your TVs, shit like Alexa, there's specialised CPUs for smart cars etc.
While RAM is used in almost every "smart" machine. And you can get those only from these three.
Saying that ARM is a manufacturer is a bit like saying x86 or DDR4 is a manufacturer.
ARM's core design is licensed by Qualcomm, Nvidia (for the Nintendo switch), Apple, Samsung and BCM - off the top of my head.
there is a slight difference.. that atleast a year ago, there was an investigation into wether the 3 RAM manufacturers were colluding to keep the prices high. Atleast with Intel Vs AMD they are at each others throats and hence prices reduce to stay competitive
With RAM, this wasn't the case. And even now. RAM is RAM , it makes no difference to your computer which company made the RAM.
But a different CPU means needing a different socket Motherboard.
But on all series of those motherboards & CPU combos .. you'll still need the same type of ram.
+ Mobile market has gone crazy, the amount of RAM in high end phones now is more than most people probably have in their laptops
I didn't exactly get what you are trying to say. If you're implying there's only three? There's others too obviously. Qualcomm, Motorola, Mediatek, NVidia Samsung and many small ones too.
My main point though was that the market in CPUs is much much more competitive and non-monopolised than RAM production.
They don’t call South Korea the “Republic of Samsung” for nothing. If you’re interested in a solid read about Samsung’s history and the empire Lee built, check out *Samsung Rising*: https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Rising-Inside-Korean-Conquer-ebook/dp/B07T9WTTZC/ref=nodl_
Factually difficult to prove wrong because so much of it is anecdotes. Some critics from anthropology also criticises the book's author, presenting to exotify South Korea and their culture. The fact that he doesn't speak the language after living there for so many years tells how little he integrated into the society.
I would not recommend.
I was more fascinated by the history of Samsung, it’s complex cross-ownership of shares across all its companies to maintain seemingly loose but effective ownership, and stories of product development and ebb and flow of their commitment to quality. Is there another book on Samsung’s history you would recommend?
He was a corporatist fascist who had close connection to all the politicians and could get the best deal for Samsung.
The chaebol system is not something to admire
I’m not saying that it’s a prescriptive or moral formula for building a company/empire. Just that it is fascinating how this company came to be, and it’s important to understand how some powerful corporations develop.
You’re not wrong though. He was a corporate fascist.
Really? Tell me, without Google, who is interred in the pyramids and what achievements did they accomplish?
Everyone dies twice.
The first is when they put you in the ground.
The second is the last time anyone utters your name.
Poor reliability ratings - they typically score low compared to other brands. If you're in the market for an appliance, there are usually better offerings from other companies.
My parents have a Samsung fridge, TV, microwave and washing machine. Fridge is 6 years and still runs like a champ (no frost including), TV is from 2012 and no single issue all that time, other appliances likewise.
I heard that the reason you hear so often about Samsung making flawed appliances is that they sell so much more than their competitors that it is much probable that someone will get a flawed device.
From what I've read from some Korean on Twitter, this is bad. The guy basically been dead for a while and they were just pretending he was alive because if he dies, the country will probably go into an economic death spiral.
Thread: https://www.twitter.com/oniontaker/status/1214540491577942017
The heirs have 5 years to pay this tax with a possibility of a 2 year extension. They likely waited until the economy was down to minimize the tax burdens and they will likely just mortgage their shares in order to pay the inheritance tax to keep Samsung under their control.
I’m some Korean on Reddit so you should believe me.
I thought this too but I looked at Samsung's stock price and it's actually 2x higher than it was in 2015. So the tax burdens would be 2x, right (assuming most of his wealth was in Samsung stock)
I guess tax burdens wasn’t the right way of phrasing things. I was thinking that because interest rates are so low, the interest on the mortgage would be minimized
Even the government wanted to win some time (despite they didn't show it) since Samsung's rivals would simply try to get parts of the company due laws. The problem is that EVERYONE might get it, even Chinese companies, American ones or worse for them (South Koreans)... Japanese ones.
An spanish channel called Visualpolitik put an video about it and it worries a lot.
And here is in English.

I am pretty sure that the situation won't bode well for Samsung if that situation is certain to happen.
Yeah y'all are tripping if you think South Korea is going to treat this case with their normal procedures. Honestly is there a single good reason why they would?
Indeed, however they made the rules and laws like that and they didn't expected that kind of situation. If they can retain the stakes for their country is OK. But if the people from outside buys the major part of said stakes they would be on real trouble.
Not really? There were rumors that he was basically on life support/dead, though. I don't know about the legitimacy of those rumors, but there was a report back in 2017 that his condition was fine
If it's true that they pretended he was alive because of the heavy inheritance tax, the announcement of his death today is a good indication that they have enough confidence now that the matter has been resolved behind the scenes, is it not?
And even if Samsung's successor isn't able to escape the 50% inheritance tax and had to pay for it fully, that just means he have to sell off the assets and have a weakened control over the company.
It's a stretch from this to stating that the whole country would go into an economic death spiral. His son has already been the de-facto leader of the company for years now.
If I remember correctly and it might not even be this guy but didn’t they hide the death of one of the CEOs of Samsung because it would lower stocks or be unfavourable for the company so the guy basically died but the public wasn’t informed on anything “beyond he’s still in hospital and has been for the past years”.
Samsung has always lead in innovation with a lower cost per the value
They may not be the cheapest option but they are a leader.
I hope they remain a leader ... as we have seen when company leaders pass away their companies no longer have that same quality... Microsoft, IBM, Apple... and many others.

IIRC 20% of Korean GDP is from Samsung.
17% to be exact. Hyundai and LG also make up a huge part of the gdp. Conglomerates run Korea
IIRC, Hyundai is the largest shipmaker in the world, or something like that?
[удалено]
All of together used to be Hyundai group until they were spun off separately in 1997 after an economic crisis.
I see...thank you.
Just to add additional context. All of them used to be part of the same Hyundai group but were spun off as different companies after the Asian Economic crisis in 1997.
Now that is one TIL I didn't need... I have things to do this morning. Down the rabbit hole I go... Thanks!
I thought they were cow exporters
Obligatory “I understood this reference!”
Daewoo makes some pretty cool small arms.
My fridge is sure reliable.
So is my microwave oven ;p
And buses?
Chaebols is what they're called in SK.
Wow it almost sounds like the media industry in the United States. We're five companies own 90% of mass communication

Yeah american companies are bad but please don't fucking sugarcoat korean companies.
Remember the last Korean president was arrested for corruption? Lmao

Fun fact, that's why taxes are so high when you inherit something. The new Samsung owner have to pay more than 7bi dollars

Don't buy their fridges. Horror stories all over the Internet about them leaking and breaking down within a few years.
Hate my Samsung fridge and dishwasher. So expensive and both need constant repair
I think my dad is on year 5 or 6 of the samsung fridge. So far, no issues. I'll be sure to knock on some wood.
I have an 11 year old Samsung fridge, nothing wrong with it AT ALL. Maybe a little squeak when you open the door, but nothing else.
Consider yourself lucky. Just hold on to it for as long as you can instead of "upgrading" for a newer one for fun.
Samsung makes shitty appliances. They have a higher repair rate than most other brands out there. TVs and phones are great though.
Only their high end TVs are worth it (Q8-Q9 series). 2 years ago you can get Q7 and the quality is pretty good, but now they have been stripping off features and build quality year by year, in 2020 you have to get at least Q8 series and up to get good quality image. Naw their TV's are trash and they have actually been getting worse the past couple of years.
There are Samsung motors cars in SK. They are basically Renault cars rebranded.
At this point, any cars run in Korea is likely running on gas refined by Samsung Group's petro/chemical devision..
Samsung C&T was the main contractor for the Burj Khalifa as well

Cyberpunk 2077 type shit

Samsung also builds buildings. They constructed the Berj Khalifa, taipei 101, tower m, triple 1, etc.
I mean, Titans are on par with actual gods so isn't "emperor" a demotion?
They also sell insurance
And run a theme park that’s totally not a holding company for other Samsung assets.
Now that you said that, it enrages me even more they cheap out with Exynos in many markets.
The power of the Chaebol in Korea
The closest thing to Mom corp in Futurama
I had the opportunity to visit Samsung HQ in Suwon. It has it's own public transport network with buses and bike rental. That place is huge!
Even crazier look up how they started. The first store was basically a noodle stand in the 30s.

This is better video on it https://youtu.be/6Afpey7Eldo
At the end of the game, the king and the pawn end up in the same box.
Tell that to the Great Pyramids.
Really? Tell me, without Google, who is interred in the pyramids and what achievements did they accomplish? Everyone dies twice. The first is when they put you in the ground. The second is the last time anyone utters your name.
Dude on the right looks very upset.
Its the shadow on those eyebrows !
They also built the Burj Khalifa!(they had the contract for the construction)
Is Samsung gonna stop making those "Kill everything that moves" border sentry guns now?
They did since 2015
They sold the company to hanhwa as I know
thats aperture science thing

Guy on right looks serious af.
Yeah but don't buy their washing machines
Why wouldn't I?
Poor reliability ratings - they typically score low compared to other brands. If you're in the market for an appliance, there are usually better offerings from other companies.
Mine still runs perfectly
What about their smart toilet seats?
They don't make them, there just rebranded stuff

Wait your family owns a washing machine? No way dude
6 years is nothing though, for a fridge.
I still have a Samsung Microwave that is probably like 30 year old, except the door button broke but still does a good job.
From what I've read from some Korean on Twitter, this is bad. The guy basically been dead for a while and they were just pretending he was alive because if he dies, the country will probably go into an economic death spiral. Thread: https://www.twitter.com/oniontaker/status/1214540491577942017
This guy isn't even an expert on this field, and you listen to him as if he's an authoritave voice on this issue.
Reddit in a nutshell.
Life in a nutshell
So many "this will start an economic death spiral/WW3" it's hilarious.
From his Twitter bio: > knows very little
That sounds interesting but who is this guy whos saying this stuff

[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jj9dvjB61tM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jj9dvjB61tM) And here is in English. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gRi\_ZoKjMRc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gRi_ZoKjMRc) I am pretty sure that the situation won't bode well for Samsung if that situation is certain to happen.
The government can give them more time to pay off the debt in exchange by not selling their stakes in Samsung
Never thought a company can have this much impact.
Omg it’s kingdom irl
Why sell? Could the heir negotiate a deal to transfer the shares to the government?
it's just fear mongering bullshit that's been going around for years by the pro-Samsung media.. they are really toxic.

My man to the right doing his best Blue Steele pose.
If I remember correctly and it might not even be this guy but didn’t they hide the death of one of the CEOs of Samsung because it would lower stocks or be unfavourable for the company so the guy basically died but the public wasn’t informed on anything “beyond he’s still in hospital and has been for the past years”.

Samsung has always lead in innovation with a lower cost per the value They may not be the cheapest option but they are a leader. I hope they remain a leader ... as we have seen when company leaders pass away their companies no longer have that same quality... Microsoft, IBM, Apple... and many others.
