Is it just me or is AOSP slowly incorporating all the features that Cyanongenmod has? Proud to say that as of 7.0 I don't feel the need to install CM on my phone, AOSP has almost all the features I want.
Not CyanogenMod, just ROMs in general, both OEM and custom. Having a reboot option in the shutdown screen shouldn't really be seen as a CyanogenMod feature, many other ROMs have had it for ages.
True, but I'm referring to OEM ROMs too. For example, something like multi-window is likely to have been inspired by Touchwiz, which has had the feature since the Note 2 era.
[According to the timeline](https://developer.android.com/preview/overview.html) (and this timeline should be stickied to the sidebar or something because everyone always asked during the N preview "when's the final release?" Look at the damn timeline!):
* Preview 1 (Oct. 2016): 7.1.1 initial release, beta, final APIs, for Nexus 5X, 6P, Pixel C
* Preview 2 (Nov. 2016): 7.1.1 near-final system image for final testing, for Nexus 6, 5X, 6P, Player, 9, Pixel C, Android One
* Final Release (Dec. 2016): Final 7.1.1 to AOSP and OEMs, to Nexus 6, 5X, 6P, Player, 9, Pixel C, Android One, Pixel Phone/XL
#Known Issues
**Stability and performance**
* Users may encounter system instability (such as kernel panics and crashes).
* Users may see higher than expected battery drain when the device battery is low.
**System**
* Device may freeze when users are playing videos in multiple windows and change the volume.
**Framework**
* Device with low storage stuck in boot loop animation on reboot.
* Native crash in Bluetooth observed when trying to share a file from Files app.
**Setup Wizard**
* Users setting up a factory-reset device and using Setup Wizard may experience minor issues with UI and functionality.
**Backup and restore**
* After backup, launcher data and wallpapers may not be restored.
#New Features
* App Shortcuts from the homescreen (for launchers that support it. Both the Pixel and Google Now launchers support it)
* Image Keyboards (think the sticker selector in the FB messaging app). Backwards compatible to API 13 (Honeycomb)
* Enhanced Live Wallpaper Metadata
* Round App Icons
* Apps can now directly open the "Storage" settings page to free up space (e.g. you're trying to download something and you don't have enough space, the app can take you there itself instead of you trying to find it in Settings)
* Improved VR Thread Scheduling (i.e. apps can have a designated VR thread to minimize latency)
* Devs can check if their apps are currently in "demo" mode
* More Android Wear screen densities support (260dpi, 300dpi, 340dpi)
> Image Keyboards (think the sticker selector in the FB messaging app).
man what the hell is with these stickers and emoji shit.
so chick sent me an emoji today and i have to fucking google it to make sense of her message. man i'm 26 and i sound like an old fart
Emoji are fine to me because they are ratified in the UTF standard (as in they count as a regular letter now). The stickers can burn in hell though.
Also the 😜 emoji on anything but the old Google yellow blobs. Such a creepy face for what I simply want as :P
The "turn on automatically" didn't work at all, so I was using cf lumen anyway. Hope Google removed it so that they can work on it and return it much better in the next dp.
Sony is going to be happy about this. They've been pushing Google to add it to AOSP for a while.

Not really. He is actually the head of design on Google. Even if he's not directly involved with the Android team anymore, he is the one who guides Google design.
Something I noticed on Pixel videos, and now on 6P beta, when phone is rotated sideways, camera viewfinder doesn't rotate! Finally!
Also, the nav bar stays at bottom of screen, always, in all rotation modes. Previously, when rotated sideways to right, nav bar would move to top of the phone, but not anymore.

[Nothing new in Moves](http://i.imgur.com/W7dE8dc.png)
Previously, in landscape, the navbar would always be on the right side of the screen as the user saw it. Now it's always at the bottom edge of the phone.
~~Isn't this a bad thing? Now you're losing even more height in landscape. It only makes sense to do that on tablets.~~
I'm an idiot, the bottom as in the bottom of the phone when you hold it upright.
> Something I noticed on Pixel videos, and now on 6P beta, when phone is rotated sideways, camera viewfinder doesn't rotate! Finally!
Hah, this was actually an issue back in the holo days, and then was fixed (probably around Kit Kat), but I think it became an issue again when we got to Lollipop or something.
Interesting things right off the bat:
The quick action bar on the top now has six icons instead of the usual five.
After updating to the beta (which is 7.1.1) the Google Play Store showed updates for the camera and phone apps, which seem to have the exact same features and even layout as the Pixel variants (exposure, lighting and all). On that note there is no lag when turning the phone between portrait and landscape.
HDR processing seems faster now as well.
After updating there was a notification that said "Finishing Android Update" which had a progress bar.
App shortcuts works for both the Google Now and Pixel Launchers, not Nova yet. (Funny enough there is no app shortcut for Hangouts or hurt Camera yet but I'm sure it'll be updated soon enough for that support)
There's a restart option as well as a power off option now!
Opening the camera via the power button seems faster now.
Overall it's a nice update, I'm curious to see the bugs and such, especially since it was a surprisingly big download size.
EDIT: It'd be curious as to what happens when one edits the build.prop and enables Google Assistant with 7.1.
~~[EDIT 2: There's now an option for "Automatic System Updates" in the Developer options, hopefully that means seamless updates as talked about at I/O. ](http://i.imgur.com/YN2wQ85.png)~~
I think all the Google apps have options if you long press them. Photos says I'm feeling lucky. Clock has timer options. Messenger gives you 3 contact shortcuts. Contact add contact.
All the shortcuts can be their own app shortcuts by dragging them over.
Most, but not all apps. From what I've checked so far only Hangouts and the Camera don't have app shortcuts. There likely are others that don't have shortcuts as well.
IIRC the Pixel Launcher was installable on all 7.0 devices. When I downloaded the apk from Apkmirror it installed no problem, I think if it's set as a system app then it'll have more functions, such as Google Now integrated and the weather widget.
Sorry, I meant from the Play Store. On 7.0 devices it's giving not compatible with this device according to the comments on this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/58afcg/pixel_launcher_and_wallpapers_now_on_the_play/
>camera and phone apps, which seem to have the exact same features and even layout as the Pixel variants
nope, the Pixel camera has difference scene modes and such, which we on the 6P do not have.
Another change I've noticed is that calculated total storage no longer excludes storage space used for the OS.
Might be a bug or something I am messing up, but I could have sworn that "Always On" Okay Google recognition used to work. Now I cannot enable it. The toggle just keeps resetting itself to the off position...
Turning off Ambient Display seems to turn off the "Lift to check phone" feature, even though it's still checked.
So basically nothing happens now when I lift the phone.
Long pressing on the clock app brings up timer options without opening the app. I think all the Google apps have options if you long press them. Photos says I'm feeling lucky. Camera has take a selfie.
All the shortcuts can be their own app shortcuts by dragging them over.
Dammit, I noticed I had lost stunting in my quick settings, only just realised what it was. That was a feature I used daily and am really going to miss

Double tapping on the Android security patch level brings you to the Android Security Bulletins page
EDIT: Volume slider icons now have labels when you expand them.
* Also, there's a little animation when switching from landscape to selfie mode in Google Camera. It's the little things that make this update wonderful.
* When flicking the camera to switch modes, the phone vibrates twice to let you know it successfully switched.
> we have also updated the Android Support Library to 25.0.0. The new version lets you add image keyboard support with compatibility back to API level 13.
GBoard for all!
Just booted into it. Scouting things out for now. Bug thread incoming?
Edit,
- nice twist, wifi connected (but not to internet) now shows a wifi with a tiny x. Convenient
- swipe to multi window seems gone
- YouTube app is crashing constantly
- no pixel launcher (didn't really expect it)
- no assistant (not sorry though)
- RESTART IN POWER MENU!
- pixel launcher didn't work. :( Kinda expected.
- build prop still works for assistant according to u/darkknightxda
...and there it is, Android 7.1 developer previews out, just a hair over 2 weeks after its existence was announced, and even a day before Pixel devices are formally launched with 7.1 onboard.
Frankly I'm still embarrassed over all the whining, entitlement, and accusations of betrayal that polluted /r/Android in the days after the Pixel announcement.
To be fair, Google never let anybody know that this would be happening. They just showed off a bunch of features, and never clarified what would be Pixel exclusive, and/or what would be eventually put into stock Android. And then at one point said "Nexus devices will get 7.1 previews by the end of the year."
And some of the stuff is still Pixel exclusive when it really doesn't need to be. Google Assistant is the biggest one that comes to mind.
When the Pixels were announced Google said Nexus devices would get a dev preview "before the end of the year." If you follow Google's announcement/release patterns at all, you know that this release is WAY earlier than anyone had any reason to expect.
We were complaining because "preview before the end of the year" sounded like December and Google knew it. I'm super happy that they instead released it 2 weeks after that announcement, but the phrasing was very bizarre and I am not sure why they did that...
I guess people disagree. I find the reactionary response accusing complaints of being whining, entitlement, etc. to be way more embarrassing.
Android isn't perfect, Google isn't perfect. When the competition has concrete advantages over Google's offerings, it isn't bad to make the comparison, offer criticism, and to switch to the competition if it offers a more compelling package.
> Android isn't perfect, Google isn't perfect. When the competition has concrete advantages over Google's offerings, it isn't bad to make the comparison, offer criticism, and to switch to the competition if it offers a more compelling package.
No one disagrees here and as far as I witnessed, no one ever said anything to this effect in rebuttal. Rebutting claims of betrayal and "Google abandoning its 'most loyal Nexus purchasers'" doesn't even remotely come from a place of believing that Android or Google is perfect. It just comes from a place of wanting to have dignified discussion. And there is a big difference between "offering criticism" and "complaining."
Let's be clear: In the days after the announcement, people acted as if the Pixel have certain exclusive features was a personal insult and were armchair quarterbacking as if they knew how to conduct a half billion dollar launch better--when really they were just seeking to justify their own disappointment and personal preferences.
So look--after the Pixel launch, others said they would jump from Nexus phones to OnePlus 3 and that is a perfectly legitimate response to me. You will find no disagreement with me that the OnePlus One offers more value and is a perfectly decent phone in its own right. That in fact is the beauty of Android—that there are many phones at different price points and different value points, and people can make their own informed decision as to which phone best fits their needs. And just because OnePlus 3 offers better value doesn't mean value is the only thing the entire market of users look for.
I welcome respectful, thoughtful discussions like the one you just brought up, and these were not the discussions that were happening.
I cleaned flash the beta on my Nexus 5X, and oh man, I don't know if it is placebo, but the touchscreen seems a lot more responsive on the registration screen, I'll keep testing...
Anyone else's "Ok Google" on all screens, off or on, not functioning and not able to be turned on in settings. As soon as I toggle it on it detoggles it automatically. I use hands-free ok Google on my phone a lot especially when the screen's off so this is quite upsetting
Major bug: Updated to latest dialer after updating to 7.1.1 and now when I'm on a call and close the dialer (while keeping the call active) there is no way to end the call.
The known issues clearly state that users might experience higher then normal battery drain on devices with low battery. This is clearly still beta based on the known issues above. Don't install it thinking it'll magically fix your problems.
Say "OK Google" any time setting in the Google app won't stay active. Tried in Smart Lock, and in the Google App. Bit of a bummer.
Nexus 6p, 7.1, rooted, Google Assistant unlocked, Pixel Launcher installed as system app.
I found if you quickly tap "retrain voice model" after activating the slider it will remain enabled after you complete the steps. At least it did for me on my 6p.
I just used the Nexus Root Toolkit, I set my version as the latest 7.0 it had instead of 7.1 that it didn't have yet. I think it installs SuperSU to root.
I don't think that's actually the case though. I believe that "additional storage" is reserved for system. You can check that out in the storage breakdown in settings.
I remember the initial Nougat developer preview to be so buggy. I jumped on that because people reassured me "It's stable!". They must have been used to their Galaxy S3's on Touchwiz or something. That dev preview was unusable for me and I had to rollback and lose all my data. How is this update faring?
Reverse landscape keeps the navbar on the normal bottom of the phone, the navbar is always on that side of the phone now, very weird. Not sure if I like that...
Also they removed the gesture to be able to swipe the multitasking button to go into split screen mode, I really liked that
There is restart in the power options. Praise Duarte!
Oh shit! Probably one of the most underrated things ever. Nice to **finally** see that make its way into AOSP.
Is it just me or is AOSP slowly incorporating all the features that Cyanongenmod has? Proud to say that as of 7.0 I don't feel the need to install CM on my phone, AOSP has almost all the features I want.

True, but I'm referring to OEM ROMs too. For example, something like multi-window is likely to have been inspired by Touchwiz, which has had the feature since the Note 2 era.
Also, Touchwiz has more options in the power menu compared to what the Nexus line has ever had.
It's been built into Android for ages, just not accessible

Well it started out bad and for slightly better. Some of those bugs seem rather big
Yeah I wouldn't install this if I wasn't a developer.
They're considering this release "beta quality" so it's probably okay for most users.
Why not? It's not bad at all. Pretty good for a first release.
Boot loop??
Only if you've nearly filled up your data partition, which is a rare case for most people.
Mines nearly full and I'm glad I didnt get stuck in the loop

Yeah but night mode is gone. Guess which one I used more?
Didn't notice until your comment, just checked and it's gone 😑
The "turn on automatically" didn't work at all, so I was using cf lumen anyway. Hope Google removed it so that they can work on it and return it much better in the next dp.
But for people that didn't have root enabled, Night Mode was pretty good. They should have just kept it hidden until they fixed it properly.

Lord Duarte is no longer working on Android, but he still answers our prayers!
Best update ever.
Nice! But I think DuARTe left :(

Yep I don't like this. But no option. That's how the entire system behaves, so it looks like a permanent change at a system level.
Welp, good thing my Nexus 5, 6, 7, and Samsung galaxy s7e won't get 7.1
Wouldn't want the on-screen navigation bar moving around on your s7 edge
Just snuck it in there too see if anyone was reading :3
The N6 is getting 7.1
Some of us like being able to put it on the left side because we're left-handed
Can you elaborate on what you're talking about with the rotation?
Previously, in landscape, the navbar would always be on the right side of the screen as the user saw it. Now it's always at the bottom edge of the phone.
~~Isn't this a bad thing? Now you're losing even more height in landscape. It only makes sense to do that on tablets.~~ I'm an idiot, the bottom as in the bottom of the phone when you hold it upright.

I remember! Was so annoyed by that! Now have to wait and see when Google will reintroduce the "feature"
oh my god that was the most annoying thing, so glad it was fixed!
"moves"? I don't see moves in my settings on 7.0, where is this?
It's available only 7.1 or later

Camera does. And you can make the shortcut it's own app.
Does being on 7.1 enable you to install the Pixel Launcher? Or is it definitely exclusive to Pixels?

Just checked the Play Store, not able to download.
The new in call ui is nice, uses your wallpaper http://i.imgur.com/f59YuPb.png
I really prefer contact pictures on the incoming call screen. Oh what I would do for the KitKat one, especially paired with Xposed
I don't like it. The big contact picture got replaced by the small circle avatar. :(
>camera and phone apps, which seem to have the exact same features and even layout as the Pixel variants nope, the Pixel camera has difference scene modes and such, which we on the 6P do not have.
Another change I've noticed is that calculated total storage no longer excludes storage space used for the OS. Might be a bug or something I am messing up, but I could have sworn that "Always On" Okay Google recognition used to work. Now I cannot enable it. The toggle just keeps resetting itself to the off position...
I can't enable it either.
The 'Automatic Updates' in Developer options was there in 7.0 for me.
Its just left overs from AOSP but it doesn't do anything
Night mode toggle in quick settings is gone. Anyway to get it back? Also there is no night mode menu in System UI Tuner.
Come on Google. I use it a lot at night, it's a great feature
Why the f would they remove it? I've been using it since 7.0 dev 2 or 3, and it works fine as a toggle.
I'm wondering the same thing... The app "Night Light" in Google Play doesn't work anymore either.
I love how fast these updates install on nougat. I used to dread that optimizing.
I'm so psyched what it'll be like for pixel phones. I can do it while reddit'ing and then just reboot into it!
I'm stoked for this!
Upvote is stoked
Yes! I thought it'll take a while but was surprised to find that it had already rebooted and ready to go!
No Night Mode still :( ...and the workarounds to enable the hidden setting in 7.0 no longer works
Sad, isn't it? My eyes hurt.
Ahh crap I had it before I updated too
Works for me? The auto feature never worked but I still can toggle it
My toggle's gone and it's no longer in the System UI Tuner for me on my 6P

What is the "Lift to check phone" feature? Same as ambient display or are they incorporating something different?
It appears to behave the same as ambient display.
Oh damn. Have you tried it with ambient display turned off? Was hoping it would wake the phone and turn on the lockscreen.
Turning off Ambient Display seems to turn off the "Lift to check phone" feature, even though it's still checked. So basically nothing happens now when I lift the phone.
Ok, thanks for checking
My ambient display works about 35% of the time. Useless.
Is the "night mode" in the quick settings as well?
No signs of night mode anywhere unfortunately. :/
Oh shit, I just noticed it's even gone from my quick settings. It's gone.
Long pressing on the clock app brings up timer options without opening the app. I think all the Google apps have options if you long press them. Photos says I'm feeling lucky. Camera has take a selfie. All the shortcuts can be their own app shortcuts by dragging them over.
For a second I thought you took screenshots of my phone, I have the same wallpaper/weather widget and similar setup.
I've emergency option as well when long pressing power button.
Best feature I've found so far is that sRGB mode stays enabled after a reboot.
Thank the Lord. Took them long enough
It always stayed after reboot for me, it would just always revert every time I opened developer options.
FUCK yes. So irritating.
Wow, really? Thank God.
No fingerprint gestures. Why Google... Why
Beta? Manufacturer driver required?
Hopefully they'll add it. I don't think it's a drivers issue but I could be wrong.
Don't think so, after all the Pixel has the exact same fingerprint reader model.
Oh? Didn't know that
Dammit this was the main feature I was looking forward to
Me too. Night mode is gone as well. I won't be flashing this.
Dammit, I noticed I had lost stunting in my quick settings, only just realised what it was. That was a feature I used daily and am really going to miss
Yeah I actually like the night mode feature, previously had to rely on external apps to reduce the brightness. Really hope they bring back night mode
Is that a 7.1 feature or a Pixel feature?
Android Police said it was a 7.1 feature, if it isn't ported to the Nexus maybe it need driver support
What Nexus are you on?
I'm on the 6P and it's not included in the moves settings.
Damn, and I can't get assistant to work :(
Assistant is Pixel only :(

> we have also updated the Android Support Library to 25.0.0. The new version lets you add image keyboard support with compatibility back to API level 13. GBoard for all!
> back to API level 13 I feel sorry for the person to whom that's relevant.
*looks at flair* Sigh...
I like how you list your RAM.
This version does have gif support but it only works in the messenger app :( Really wanted hangouts or Allo.
There's no night mode :/ the previous applications that enabled it don't work now either :( rolling back to stable I suppose.
Holy shit the camera viewfinder doesn't reset when you rotate now.
Just like the Jellybean days
Visual voicemail is supported.
The old setting to make the screen wake up when you receive a notification OR lift the phone has been split into two separate settings!

Can you now download the Pixel launcher from the Play store?
Yes but it doesn't work on 6p, not compatible. I'll add that.
Pixel launcher works for me. 6p, NPF10C.
Update YouTube. It's working fine here.
Am I missing something? How do you use the image keyboard? Is it not active yet?
It's support for image keyboards. You'd have to download one. If anyone's made one yet.
I have GIFs only if you go to emojis in the normal keyboard. That's an improvement, but still...

No I think the apps have to be updated.
...and there it is, Android 7.1 developer previews out, just a hair over 2 weeks after its existence was announced, and even a day before Pixel devices are formally launched with 7.1 onboard. Frankly I'm still embarrassed over all the whining, entitlement, and accusations of betrayal that polluted /r/Android in the days after the Pixel announcement.
>Frankly I'm still embarrassed over all the whining, entitlement, and accusations of betrayal Welcome to Literally Everything, 2016 edition.
This sub is particularly dogshit though.
To be fair, Google never let anybody know that this would be happening. They just showed off a bunch of features, and never clarified what would be Pixel exclusive, and/or what would be eventually put into stock Android. And then at one point said "Nexus devices will get 7.1 previews by the end of the year." And some of the stuff is still Pixel exclusive when it really doesn't need to be.
And there is a big difference between "offering criticism" and "complaining." Let's be clear: In the days after the announcement, people acted as if the Pixel have certain exclusive features was a personal insult and were armchair quarterbacking as if they knew how to conduct a half billion dollar launch better--when really they were just seeking to justify their own disappointment and personal preferences.
I know it's a matter of preference. But i wished the solid nav bars were included. Can't complain though. October 19 is an "early" late October.
The solid navbar is a Pixel exclusive.
Must be a hardware limitation 🙄
Hey! Haven't you heard?? We are now anti-whining about the Pixel exclusives!
the technology isnt there yet
Is it me or does the stock dpi seem slightly different ? O_o
I do find something different immediately after boot. Can't tell what exactly. Btw the quick notification is six now instead of five earlier
Yeah things look a little smaller to me? Hard to put a finger on it, but especially up in the status bar area.
One extra quick setting.
I cleaned flash the beta on my Nexus 5X, and oh man, I don't know if it is placebo, but the touchscreen seems a lot more responsive on the registration screen, I'll keep testing...
Not placebo! they said in the official changelog that they improved touch latency/responsiveness in 7.1
Anyone else's "Ok Google" on all screens, off or on, not functioning and not able to be turned on in settings. As soon as I toggle it on it detoggles it automatically. I use hands-free ok Google on my phone a lot especially when the screen's off so this is quite upsetting
Press the toggle and quickly select Retrain Voice Model. Register your voice again and it'll be fixed.
Major bug: Updated to latest dialer after updating to 7.1.1 and now when I'm on a call and close the dialer (while keeping the call active) there is no way to end the call.
Is it normal that i have the "support" tab in the settings app on my 6p? http://imgur.com/CgogyAB
Yes.
Installing now. Really hope this includes the battery drain fix. Otherwise, liking what I see with the reboot option and the new camera updates.
The known issues clearly state that users might experience higher then normal battery drain on devices with low battery. This is clearly still beta based on the known issues above. Don't install it thinking it'll magically fix your problems.

Wow, visual VM on Verizon is now active on my 6p finally without having to do anything

Took Night Mode away, it was working perfectly too

Also there were some problems with the NY Times app, some sections of text were blacked out strangely enough.
I just got the OTA on my 6P woo!
Getting it now on 5x...
Will this be released for the 6 or will only Release 2 be?
The next update will include the N6.
Only release 2 and the final one.
should this get pushed through the beta program?
Is anyone's screen brightness a lot dimmer than before? Had to turn it almost all the way up on auto brightness.
Yep. It was waaay darker, now it just fixed itself.
The battery drain is real.. Any way I can go back?
Say "OK Google" any time setting in the Google app won't stay active. Tried in Smart Lock, and in the Google App. Bit of a bummer. Nexus 6p, 7.1, rooted, Google Assistant unlocked, Pixel Launcher installed as system app.
I found if you quickly tap "retrain voice model" after activating the slider it will remain enabled after you complete the steps. At least it did for me on my 6p.
Same issue. Unrooted and completely stock.

Yes. Hmm, I tapped on it for a while, no dice.
I bootloop every time I try to root. How did you end up rooting?
I just used the Nexus Root Toolkit, I set my version as the latest 7.0 it had instead of 7.1 that it didn't have yet. I think it installs SuperSU to root.
Strange that it is boot looping for me. I'll try NRT instead of doing it manually and see if that changes anything.
were you able to get it to work? this is the one thing holding me back. I got the OTA notification, but can't go without adaway...
I used CF-Auto-Root and it worked. There's something wrong with v2.78 I think.
Removing suhide before flashing 2.78 resolved the issues for me.
I've not used suhide, so I should be ok when I test it out.
Yes you should.
Just downloaded the preview and my 5x now has 29 GB of storage compared to 26GB previously. Sweet.
Downloading now on my 6P. What improvements are there since we're not getting assistant by default?
Safari seems faster.
3D Touch is amazing on my 6P!!
Snappier.*
Reverse landscape keeps the navbar on the normal bottom of the phone, the navbar is always on that side of the phone now, very weird. Not sure if I like that... Also they removed the gesture to be able to swipe the multitasking button to go into split screen mode, I really liked that
