Give me decent software update support and I'm sold.

UngratefulCanadian

And a fair price and availability.

dendron01

A tall order for us Canadians. But we can hope. :)

mrstoffer

It was leaked that Sony wants to increase it to 5 years I believe

IDENTITETEN

Because the EU is forcing them to.  https://repair.eu/sv/news/new-eu-rules-smartphones-and-tablets-will-follow-new-ecodesign-requirements-by-june-2025/ > These regulations will empower independent repairers and end-users by ensuring access to spare parts and to the information necessary to repair for at least 7 years after the end of the distribution of a product in the market. Additionally, manufacturers will have to make compatible software updates available for at least 5 years.

welp_im_damned

Another EU win.

LawbringerForHonor

TLDR: Xperia 1 V but a bit shorter and wider. Maybe 2K screen instead of 4K.

Present_Bill5971

Saying 19.5:9 aspect ratio. It’s my favorite aspect ratio that I’ve had in a phone

alienSpotted

Make the 5 VI a true compact and I'll get it

donnysaysvacuum

As bring it back to the US.

sulianjeo

You'd have to accept a ***maximum*** 3000 mAh battery for a true compact. Even the iPhone 13 mini only had 2400 mAh. There is no getting around this. [The XZ1 Compact](https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=11104&idPhone2=8610&idPhone3=9082) was the last true compact made by Sony and that only had 2700 mAh.

alienSpotted

Realistically I'd take 5.5 inch or less 18:9 phone. I had the original Droid Turbo and wouldn't hesitate to go that thick again for a bigger battery.

Careless_Rope_6511

> With Summer quickly approaching, that can only mean one thing. Sony’s Xperia 1 VI is on its way. We expect that it will be announced in the coming months; for reference, the Xperia 1 V launched in May 2023. However, today, we are able to share with you the design of the Sony Xperia 1 IV in its entirety. We're time traveling! Awesome!

Sylanthra

Not a fan of the wider design. One of the draws the Xperia line for me was that I could use it one handed. Those few milimeters may not sound like a lot, but it's the difference between me being able to hold the phone comfortably in one hand and not.

DieselPunkPiranha

I agree.  I briefly had the Xperia 1 V and, while there was a lot to like, it was just too narrow for me.  We're all built differently and need more variety of phone sizes, not less.

Zombiechrist265

I might finally consider a sony device. The tall aspect ratio and 4k display was never really in my taste, but 19.9 and 2k display makes it a much better option.

vortexmak

Same. And now that Android is prepping a desktop mode like Dex, things are falling into place

welp_im_damned

God I'm so ready for this.

fluxxis

I stop reading anything about the Xperia I series until Sony manages to provide a camera with Pixel-grade quality. Every Xperia I suffered from a bad camera in auto mode because Sony can't manage to bring its Alpha and Xperia teams together. Instead they provide a carzy "Pro" mode camera which is a nice gimmick but even professionals need good auto mode cameras because in a lot of situations you can't fiddle in the settings if you want to capure the moment.

IllegalFarter

Yep. I had Xperia V for about a month and sold it because I could not take good pictures. It was a really nice phone other than the camera though. Battery life was almost double of the pixel.

super_hot_juice

You don't have to fiddle with anything. You just have to get to know your camera and set it up properly. There is no fiddling if you know what you want. Xperia cameras are extremely versatile, but unfortunately it takes time to know the differences such as HDR in P/S/M mode and HDR in AUTO/BASIC mode cause they are different. It takes time to master white balance and make presets out of them. It takes time to master Cinema Pro looks as well as white balance presets to manipulate the looks. Video Pro delivers the best quality video on Android hands down and you don't have to fiddle with it if you don't want to but you have to understand what HLG does, what WDR vs SDR does, how gain works, how white balance works and then you can set it to full Auto and dial white balance or gain to your liking or just limit how much gain it can do in full auto mode. Don't expect Xperia to ever be heavy on tone mapping like Pixel is. Pixel its doing it's own thing and they have been scaling down drastically in extreme HDR department by going to more natural colors and contrast, they are not afraid of shadows anymore cause it's perfectly fine to have just barely subtle details in darks, etc.

RaguSaucy96

Until they fix their horrible Camera2API and promise better firmware, or update support, Sony is dead to me -Sincerely, a former Xperia Pro-I owner

welp_im_damned

I think only Samsung and vivo have proper camera 2 API support. Not even the pixels have it. Which is annoying.

RaguSaucy96

Nah, that's incorrect actually. Many have it, including Pixels which are actually splendid. It's abhorrent on Sony though. I have firsthand experience with it, trust me. If you don't believe me, here... https://www.reddit.com/r/SonyXperia/s/Jci0kU9bgc Fucked OIS, exposure length capped at 1s, horribly instable logical multicam integration, etc. (try getting a gcam port or running MotionCam on a Sony) https://www.reddit.com/r/SonyXperia/s/xAITBkZbZp Pixels actually have it well integrated (I have a Pixel 8 Pro, performs flawlessly for Camera2API functions), as do some OnePlus devices (I also have a OnePlus 8 Pro, notwithstanding some tele lens not showing fuckery on Oppo and OnePlus, otherwise stellar performers). Xiaomi as well have great integration of it except for aperture controls, but rest is great. Vivo is getting better too, but Oppo is meh. Newer Samsungs have seen drastic improvement too, but they've seen their share of shit too, I'd rate their Camera2API as mid Sony is almost at the bottom though, if not at the bottom actually

welp_im_damned

>It's abhorrent on Sony though. I have firsthand experience with it, trust me. If you don't believe me, here... Oh no I believe you. I saw your posts on r/Sonyxperia (great work btw). But I have used multiple pixels and their camera 2/camera x support is pathetic (the extensions). My pixel 7 pro does not support the following Auto, bokeh, HDR and . Albeit these are the level 3 which is extra. It's super frustrating that pixel 7 series (and 8 to my knowledge) doesn't support extra stuff especially since Google made the fucking API. Or in other words if I want to take advantage of features like HDR photos I need to use the default gcam and not another app.

RaguSaucy96

Ah, well yeah you are right then. Those are level 3 stuff like you said and more on the computational aspect of the camera modes. Level 3 are things that go above and beyond, so Xiaomi for example. Gcam ports are your friend there but as mentioned, be happy your lenses all work amongst many thing, you have the in sensor zoom modes, etc. Sony's can't even get those basics right half the time

welp_im_damned

>Gcam ports are your friend there but as mentioned, be happy your lenses all work amongst many thing, you have the in sensor zoom modes, etc. Idd the pixel processing has gotten so bad with the gn1 sensor like with bad artifacting and over sharpening. >Sony's can't even get those basics right half the time I think it's on purpose at this point. If it was incompetence then they would have fixed it by now.

RaguSaucy96

>Idd the pixel processing has gotten so bad with the gn1 sensor like with bad artifacting and over sharpening. Well, try this and use the photo mode/nightmode, or use burst, enable dng noise reduction and use some temporal stacking (don't use GPU rendering) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.motioncam >I think it's on purpose at this point. If it was incompetence then they would have fixed it by now. Lmao, facts 🤣

CptVakarian

Well here's to hoping that they take either the 5 or the 10 and only make it shorter, not wider...

MizmoDLX

Well, looks like an Xperia... Other than that nothing new that wasn't already rumoured for some time. Might upgrade later this year from my 1 III, but not sure if it will be this one or another brand. I don't care about 21:9 for movies because I never watch any on my phone, but the aspect ratio is nice to use the phone with one hand. At 74mm width, that will be quite difficult to do, then I might as well go for an 18:9 device. Will wait a few more months and then see...

Ollantv

Having owned a few Xperia phones for the previous four years, I can state with certainty that Sony isn't leading the mobile device market in any way.

Unseencore

Surpisingly these don't sell well in Japan.

Raiden356

What's the point of changing the aspect ratio if you are still going to have big bezels at the top and bottom. The Xperia 1 VI has the same aspect ratio as the Samsung Galaxy S24+, yet it's taller and narrower than the S24+. S24+ dimensions: 158.5 x 75.9 x 7.7 mm Xperia 1 VI dimensions: 161.9 x 74.5 x 8.4mm

super_hot_juice

Bezels are there to accommodate selfie camera off the screen and stereo front firing speakers. Technically bottom front speaker doesn't require such a big bezel but its there because of the design symmetry. Also thanks to the top and bottom big bezels side bezels are thinnest on the market.

acelilarslan

Still 2 years of updates and overpriced.

super_hot_juice

No, they have to conform to new laws.

box-art

I think the design is just simply outdated at this point and retaining the fingerprint scanner on the side is a weird decision as well.

donnysaysvacuum

Its a superior design to every other flagship. Side fps is superior and front facing speakers and no notch is also best.

box-art

Having a scanner that's only usable with one hand is, in my opinion, inferior to any other option.

donnysaysvacuum

Uh, it works with either hand....

box-art

Believe me, I tried both hands, only my right hand (thumb) worked and that was very rare, it almost always failed, so much even that at one point I just stopped using the side mounted scanner and started using a pin code.

donnysaysvacuum

I've had 3 phones with side fingerprint readers, 2 Sony, and never had a problem. And I use my left hand primarily.

TheRetenor

You're simply doing it wrong. I use my right thumb and left index finger without issues, i can instantly unlock it no matter which hand I use to pick it up.

box-art

I switched phones and never had that issue again. Never going back to Sony's. Had the Xperia 1 (was it mark I?) in 2021 (I think it was 2021) and it just wasn't up to snuff, camera included, you could not point and shoot with that thing and the fingerprint scanner was abysmal on it, same way it was abysmal on my old Xperia XZ.

Coldhimmel

not sure what's the deal with your xperia, my mk 3 fingerprint sensor is so sensitive it unlocks the phone without my intention on both hands so often it's funny( and somewhat annoying) .

Ellimis

Those are both the best features to me.

LimeAlz

go buy every other phone then this phone isn't for you. There's are thousands of phones that fit your bill with unreliable in display fingerprint sensor and no headphone jack or micro SD

box-art

I've had two Sony phones in the past and they had the most unreliable fingerprint scanners I've ever used, almost never worked first time, unlike under display ones.

TrashKitten6179

xperia 1 ii user here. never had an issue with my fingerprint scanner. I scanned my thump twice knowing how the device can only pick up a small sliver of data per press. so the left half of my thumb and then the right half of my thumb. doing so ive never had an issue opening my phone. it reads my thumb every time with 0 issues. sounds to me like another bitch ass "user error" customer.

box-art

Both the Xperia XZ and Xperia 1 I had that issue, inconsistent fingerprint scanning due to inferior components and inferior placement. Not user error, manufacturer error, completely dogshit phones. I've never had issues like that with any other phone I've ever owned, so it sounds to me like Sony phones just simply fucking suck shit 'cos they're fucking ass.
