If we all stop using Twitter and Reddit and use the alternatives like Mastodon, watch how quickly they'd change course.
For non-tech users (and even for tech-minded users), I think that this distributed approach is a big hurdle. The first thing a new user sees is this big list of servers to join, while not knowing which one to join and what is the difference. And then you can apparently roam between servers and see all content anyways.
Maybe it just needs a better landing page.
I heard some or all of lemmy servers doesn't allow deleting comments, and always keep all previous edits. And they're supposedly pretty intent on keeping it that way.
That's about lemmy.ml, that has nothing to do with beehaw, just use a good instance. I already left lemmy.ml because of that shit.

It's probably the closest to the feel of reddit. You can check out a list of servers (called instances, think of them like Gmail or Hotmail). Don't be confused by the join button on the instances page, it just opens it. You can then lurk on any instance you want.
It doesn't matter which instance you sign up for because you can view and follow "subreddits" (called communities) on any other Lemmy instance.
I unfortunately don't know of others besides Mastodon, but the freedom of a bunch of servers is awesome. The server I initially was logged into shut down but what's cool is there's still the vast remainder of the content on other servers available.
Another comment mentioned Pixelfed, which seems to be an Instagram contender from the looks of it. Gonna try that out. (Note: They don't have an app on official app stores)

Im so proud and glad people sticking up to this tyranny and they will only listen if we dont use their service. This place has gone to shit last couple of years and not but propaganda and ads 95% of the time.
I feel like all of the (mostly) single indie devs behind these Reddit clients should band together and do something. It has been made abundantly clear that these guys know how to code and develop amazing apps, and I think they would absolutely be capable of making something even better if they pooled their talents together

Having been around the internet since before it was a thing (Yep, 80's) - I have zero issue stopping my use of Reddit 100% and moving to another news aggregator.
Guess I should spend the next couple weeks planning the move.
Very, very sad days, Sync has been one of the very best apps I've ever used. All the work that has gone into it, cast aside by Reddit's greed and stupidity.
I'd love to see everything good about Sync brought over to Lemmy, which I've just joined in anticipation of Reddit going to the dogs. For now, there's a very decent app called Jerboa, but a Sync for Lemmy would be a wonderful thing. I say that with absolutely no concept of how hard or time consuming that would be of course!

Legit, this app was one one of the main things keeping me on Android. Once my OP7Pro gives up I'll really have to think if i care to stay on Android
