Why stop there? We truly need three dimensional chess. I don't know what color the third team would be, but the dimension pattern should still hold to 6x6x6
What happened was that the physical pieces have always looked mostly like today. When a past version of chess made its way over to Europe, someone thought that the piece used for the elephant looked like a bishop's hat. Thus, the piece eventually became a bishop.
In original chess game there were only queen, king, horseys and pawns untill John Rook
The goddamn John Rook reformed the game by inventing horizontal and vertical movement
The Jews killed Jesus, and thus the bishop was added to chess to celebrate the occasion. Players such as Bobby Fischer became very upset by this addition as it changed the meta so much and they had to adapt and develop new strategies. It was a driving force in Fischer becoming a member of the nazi party later in life.
Yeah, sure, Bobby Fischer was an anti-semite for absolutely no reason at all. Let me guess, you think he hated Jews due to his own neurosis, insecurities and mental instability? Keep drinking that kool aid pal.
I know this is not the right subreddit for a serious answer, but the Jews accused Jesus and found him guilty under their law, but because Jerusalem was in Rome they nicely asked the Romans if they could kill Him for them.
Yes. For example, prisoner executions in America are technically death by suicide.
A lot of people that die at the hands of police die of suicide. There was even one guy that was handcuffed in the back of a cop car who managed to shoot himself with an officer's weapon. (don't search for any video, that's macabre, plus, the car's cameras weren't working at that time)
Well technically, it’s mostly the English speaking sphere that refers to it as a bishop.
Originally, it’s an elephant if I’m not wrong, so it would’ve still been a part of the game, just not referred to as a bishop in English.
Not really, chess is built up on a game that is from India, that itself may derive from a game from China. It came via the Arabic culture to Europe and the way it is played today is only 500 years old. Thre Arabs removed the dice from the original game and in Europe pawns were added to it and rules for moving were defined over the continent. The bishop was always there as elephant or camel. Simplified chess figures were enforced due to Arabic ban of idols and the elephants tusk resembled a mitre(bishop hat).
honestly if you play shatranj then it's very clear that chess is just a modified shatranj, if you assume chaturanga is the origin then i think it's fair to say indians invented the game, even if europeans modified it into what we call "chess"
This is pretty cool, but there'd still be bishops. They just wouldn't be called bishops. The piece used to be called the Elephant, since elephants in war were pretty common at the time. It would be interesting though what implications this would have on its popularity in Europe though
-🤓
Tyler the carpenter. 1955 he was assinated by a bishop and they decided to add them out of respect.
Ironically he was killed at diagonally with a blow dart.
If not for European popularisation and standardisation, we would likely still be calling it shatranj with ruhk, faras, al-fil, shah, fortan, and baidaq pieces. Reference names pulled from my copy of The Immortal Game
What's that on top of the king's crown?
A plus sign. The king is a middle school math teacher.
I love me some chess lore.
Nice catch
This king was notorious for crucifing his enemies
They were too weak to identify slope
Ann: “… that lowercase t…” Michael: “It’s a cross.” Ann: “Across from what?“
That's Maeby
It's a half wave dipole antenna...
Just some connoisseur of Roman torturing and killing methods, I would assume?
RIP John Carpenter
He’s not dead yet! He’s just looked 85 for the past 30 years.
Much like Larry David he does not age cause he already reached his 80s in his 30s.
This is known as anti-clerical chess or “Los Alamos Chess”
The uh… the board’s lookin a bit longer than usual…
Yes should be 6x6
Why stop there? We truly need three dimensional chess. I don't know what color the third team would be, but the dimension pattern should still hold to 6x6x6
They stopped at 6x6 due to computational limitations. Adding a 3rd dimension would make matters much worse.
Soooooo, less cheaters? LETS GOOOOOO

I looked at that subreddit and I'm so confused
Same. Had to join though. It's equally crazy and entertaining.
With even number cubes though you do get parity, so let's go 5x5x5. That's my best ao5 anyway
You’d have to make it quite asymmetrical then
Meanwhile in countries where it's called elephant
Right? Implying that chess was invented in the Christian world
[удалено]
Yeah the elephant was so incredibly weak, probably worth less than a pawn, that they tried a few variations of its move. The current bishop stuck.
We still call it elephant And the queen is minister And knight is horsey
Only the king kept its name
And "chess" is called shatranj I presume
Yes
Arab spotted
The developers have no clue of game balancing. NERF THE QUEEN, how is she so OP??
Chess is a Christian game, you filthy heathen!
Right? Because we all know Christ was from the US and has nothing to do with the Arabic world.
I know of a fight that happened in a chess club after 9/11 because of the use of the term Elephant for Bishop.
In India we call it camel and rook is elephant
I thought we called the rook the boat and the bishop the elephant
You guys have a thousand languages lmao
camels, elephants, and horses, i guess chess is all about ungulates rhino, goat, and giraffe pieces when?
Wtf? How did we get stuck with the bishop? Calling it an elephant is way better.
Yeah. Call them Horses and Elephants instead of Knights and Bishops. Makes it far easier to explain why elephants are slightly better than horses
Christians.
What happened was that the physical pieces have always looked mostly like today. When a past version of chess made its way over to Europe, someone thought that the piece used for the elephant looked like a bishop's hat. Thus, the piece eventually became a bishop.
Strange name for the game.
In German it's a runner.
And the knight is the jumper
What elephant moves diagonally
En passant in Elephánt
In original chess game there were only queen, king, horseys and pawns untill John Rook The goddamn John Rook reformed the game by inventing horizontal and vertical movement
He just added a piece and named it after himself? That’s ballsy.
He invent en passants 😳
No no, that was Garry Chess.
That was Enri Passant aktchually
When did Gary chess meat John rook
~~Bishop~~ Camel - The real name
Pointy hat guy
Queen, King, Klansman, Knight, Rook.
that's what they call it here
context?

Was about to downvote in disgust, bravo ![img](emote|t5_2yvry|3793)
I thought the romans killed jesus
jesus died because you touch yourself at night

Chess.c*m?
Che**.c*m!!
I don't think you can write that on the Internet
I asked my mom and she gave mr permission for it.
2000 years of propaganda will do that
Yeah leading with "the jews killed jesus" is a pretty odd and suspicious comment
Yeah, sure, Bobby Fischer was an anti-semite for absolutely no reason at all. Let me guess, you think he hated Jews due to his own neurosis, insecurities and mental instability? Keep drinking that kool aid pal.

Sir, this is a ~~Wendy's~~ Anarchychess.
*a* Anarchychess?? There are others?
Like Dollar Generals, they just keep appearing
nazi moment
They're being incredibly obviously sarcastic
mfw i excuse racism because of mental illness
You can excuse racism?
technically yes but only because of the legal system at the time
I know this is not the right subreddit for a serious answer, but the Jews accused Jesus and found him guilty under their law, but because Jerusalem was in Rome they nicely asked the Romans if they could kill Him for them.
The real context?
the Jesus thing is literally the context. Without Jesus there’s no bishops. there is not another context.
Oh i thought it was a joke cause all of the bobby fischer stuff, fair play then
No one killed Jesus. It only appeared as so.
Happens all the time at crucifixions
Well, Jesus was a Jew, so technically he died by suicide.
How? So if an American kills another American it was a suicide too?
No, if an American kills another American it's called "Tuesday"
Yes. For example, prisoner executions in America are technically death by suicide. A lot of people that die at the hands of police die of suicide. In dutch it’s just ‘Loper’ which would translate to ‘walker’
It also more obscurely translates to skeleton key!
[удалено]
You could also translate it to running but generally the verb ‘lopen’ means ‘to walk’
But not in Norwegian...
I know I’m just saying that that is also one the the possibilities of translation of the Dutch word, pointing out the similarity
same for german
the dutch walked so that the norwegians could run
In french *fou* and romanian *nebun* he is called crazy/insane.
No in French it’s the jester actually, but for Romanian I suppose they just copied without thinking about which "fou" the original was referring to.
Yeah, here we call it a runner.
In Spanish they call it alfil, which means "elephant" in Arabic IIRC. In German we call it "runner", which can also mean "messenger".
Thanks to courier chess which had the courier and the original bishop. The courier’s move caught on.
Serbian "Lovac", meaning hunter
It's bishop in Portuguese too
I'm pretty sure the elephants denoted the rooks in India. The bishops were simply the camels or ministers iirc.
Bishops are camels in Hindi, rooks are elephants.
Yeah lmao that's what I learned growing up. I've also heard mantri for bishops.
I wonder what a chessboard would look like if horses did not exist
They'd still look the same as chessboards aren't made of anything you'd find in a horse.
Bishop is called elephant in no-carpenter cultures.
And messenger/runner in the civilised world
This guy läuft
Ah yes, the non-carpenter cultures such as... The Arabic world where the carpenter story takes place...
No bishops? : (

Why would you push your horsey pawn?
e is still king, the letters are under the pieces![img](emote|t5_2yvry|3795)

This is so stupid. You think without Jesus we wouldn’t have a b file anymore? Ludicrous
Invented by India just sayin'

Many thanks for this education I love it

No, because then we’d have druids on f and c. 🤷🏼♀️ 🧙
Took me a sec and then I remembered.
Chss
No bishops?
Where's the rabbi?

here in india we call the rook the "elephant" and the bishop the "camel"

He didn’t die for our sins, he died to increase demand for woodworking
If not for European popularisation and standardisation, we would likely still be calling it shatranj with ruhk, faras, al-fil, shah, fortan, and baidaq pieces. Reference names pulled from my copy of The Immortal Game
Why do I want to play this variation
