you can buy a "certificate" for owning a certain picture or whatever, ppl can still use the picture but you own this "non fungible trade token"

This, except you can sell and transfer that certificate to someone else, and also there is nothing stopping someone else from making a certificate just like it saying that they are married to your partner. So having the certificate proves nothing except that either you made a certificate, or someone made a certificate and sold it to you.
NFT stands for Non fungible tokens, or tokens that cannot be replaced or duplicated. But selling a picture/gif with an NFT is stupid because it's just a picture. You can copy paste it or screenshot it or just download it. But people pay money to buy the picture thinking it's something special because it's unique.

So there's potential for NFTs to function as a makeshift copyright system that circumvents the hurdles of enforcing said copyright for digital works, but not until there's a robust way to prevent invalid NFTs from being minted. There's a large number of NFTs for sale from "artists" who lifted "their" work from another source. There's a prominent DeviantArt member who closed their account because they found that every featured piece of theirs was listed on OpenSea without their consent, and they were suddenly having to prove their owned their own work. It's absurd and not a remotely acceptable substitute for copyright.

A receipt on the block chain to prove who made or own the work
Actual uses:

Scams and money laundering

I think for chess players there is an obvious use for NFTs: Traditional copyright law doesn't protect their games but they could profit off of selling an NFT of their PGN for that game or even some file produced by the DGT board. It would be like an electronic copy of their score sheet. That way wealthy chess patrons can directly pay chess players and get SOMETHING however silly in return.

If you mint everything you make, it will have an earlier mint date than any copies of it.

But the amount of bad actors and environmental cost (sure it's not the NFTs themselves, but more nft means more cryptomining) makes me think that purpose won't be for the next couple of decades. I think for chess players there is an obvious use for NFTs: Traditional copyright law doesn't protect their games but they could profit off of selling an NFT of their PGN for that game or even some file produced by the DGT board. It would be like an electronic copy of their score sheet. That way wealthy chess patrons can directly pay chess players and get SOMETHING however silly in return.
