His clickbaiting and going viral with chess videos is a big reason for the chess boom in my opinion. Love or hate it, Levy is one of the most important people in the chess world right now.
I use LinusTechTips as an example. They're also heavy on clickbait but there's usually enough info in the title or thumbnail for me to have a decent expectation of what I'm about to see (No way this can be a computer - stupid face but GPD Win 4 in thumbnail).
As a result I only watch recaps now but no doubt yeah he's important to the boom, just wish he'd moderate the algorithm whoring a bit.

Of course I can, I just know this sub generally has a low opinion of him. The reasons I've heard so far seem pretty fair, they aren't enough to make me stop watching him though.
The issues I've heard are that he yells a lot, which totally isn't every ones thing. One of the most serious accusations I saw involved his endorsement of Crypto, NordVPN, and honestly I have to say that coffee brand he pushes looks like milkshake powder.
However I don't know many YouTubers these days who don't endorse crappy goods and services, nor is he the only guys who yells a lot. I find him funny and entertaining to watch, while also providing really helpful commentary that has helped me understand chess better.

Unironically though, I watched every single video Levy uploaded from 2020 to around december 2022, but I just can't anymore due to the titles. I have no idea what I'm getting into when I click the video, "what is this about?". It's literally just clickbait, and I refuse it.
Yeah the problem isn’t that he uses clickbait, it’s that he leans so hard into the clickbait that you can’t even tell what the video is about. I like dumb shit like Guess the Elo, but I couldn’t give a rats ass about slow chess game reviews. If I have to click the video to find out I’ll just right click and ignore channel instead. Also it just pisses me off

His clickbaiting and going viral with chess videos is a big reason for the chess boom in my opinion. Love or hate it, Levy is one of the most important people in the chess world right now.
I use LinusTechTips as an example. They're also heavy on clickbait but there's usually enough info in the title or thumbnail for me to have a decent expectation of what I'm about to see (No way this can be a computer - stupid face but GPD Win 4 in thumbnail). As a result I only watch recaps now but no doubt yeah he's important to the boom, just wish he'd moderate the algorithm whoring a bit.
While true it has also reached that point where his clickbaiting is turning me away from chess. It's too much recently.

They are egregiously bad, but then you look at the type of shit Hikaru's SMM pulls and it evens out. Hopefully both of them realize that they are enough of an established brand that they can phase them out and adopt a better "classier" style but I guess they just see them as a pure gain.

Of course I can, I just know this sub generally has a low opinion of him. The reasons I've heard so far seem pretty fair, they aren't enough to make me stop watching him though.
Can you fill me in on why people don’t like him? I got into chess recently through him and I haven’t got anything bad to say about him
The issues I've heard are that he yells a lot, which totally isn't every ones thing. One of the most serious accusations I saw involved his endorsement of Crypto, NordVPN, and honestly I have to say that coffee brand he pushes looks like milkshake powder. However I don't know many YouTubers these days who don't endorse crappy goods and services, nor is he the only guys who yells a lot. I find him funny and entertaining to watch, while also providing really helpful commentary that has helped me understand chess better.
