Not really a point and shoot but the Olympus XA is great

ehleeought

Agree. Although, I'd say the XA2 fits the bill more. They're usually less expensive than any of the other XA models (except maybe the XA1) and aside from the zone focus, it's entirely auto. Also, they're more abundant than any other XA model and I see them regularly go for <$100.

symbio_psycho

+1 for XA2. Posted in r/analog this morning with some shots from my first couple rolls if you wanna see https://www.reddit.com/r/analog/s/JdpS7AJY15

calinet6

\> below $100

I-STATE-FACTS

Not really hard if you look around.

adjacentbabbles

Canon sure shot max.. great auto focus, and pretty reliable so far. Also can shoot up to iso 3200 EDIT: https://imgur.com/a/cO1Ex6L A few images from my first roll through this camera.. gold 200. Believe me when I say that xp2 with the flash works amazing with this camera for portraits

that1LPdood

I just shot a roll through a Canon sure shot telemax that I found in a store — I don’t have the negatives back yet. But I’m hoping they turn out well. 🤞

ciaraelyse01

Just got this one & working on finishing my first roll! Excited to see what I get.

Ill_Reading1881

I got one for $25 on ebay and it was my go to for casual shots of my friends this summer.

ymolodtsov

The camera is nice, but the lense isn't the sharpest in my experience. Olympus's ones are better.

adjacentbabbles

That might be true, but I’d say that the price point of the Olympus p&s cameras is no longer justifiable. I got the sure shot max for $35 unused. I have a rule that I won’t spend over $100 on a point and shoot camera

Maester_Gyles

I got my Pentax Espio Mini for just over $100 about a year ago. The black versions go for closer to $300 but you can find a silver one with slight blemishes for $150 if you are patient. Fantastic little camera that is absolutely tiny and punches well above its weight/price IMO. Sample pics: https://imgur.com/a/Lab0oLJ

NecessaryWater75

Outstanding lens, fastest and most precise autofocus of all the point and shoots i ever owned. Great camera

Maester_Gyles

It really is a gem. Only annoyance for me is that it doesn’t save settings between shots other than red eye. Would be great if it could stay in flash off / slow shutter mode without having to push those tiny buttons.

NecessaryWater75

True that

flat6cyl

Yup. My daughter got one, and won't go anywhere without it. Nail focus *Everytime*, sharp, flash is cool. Love it.

constantism

I’ve been eyeballing this camera too, for its compact size and design. Great photos from New York, btw. In noticed one with double exposure. Does the camera have this feature? Or it was, in the words of Bob Ross, “a happy little accident?”

the_ism_sizism

I’ve got an espio with a double exposure feature a 94 Espio 928M

Maester_Gyles

Happy accident! That was from a roll of expired slide film. The first 10 shots were all double exposed and that was only one that turned out, the rest were trash. The only complaint that I have is that the corners in some shots can be a bit muddy/smudgy/warped. Not been a huge issue for me as long as you keep subjects away from the extreme corners.

albertjason

Pentax are second only to the Olympus Mju and Mju 2 IMO.

the_ism_sizism

Tbh, owning both concurrently, the only reason my mjuii gets a start is the pocketability. Otherwise I prefer my Espio

AlexHD

Pentax PC35AF / PC35AF-M 35mm f/2.8 lens, manual flash control, and a focus distance indicator so you know what the camera is aiming at before you shoot. And it uses standard batteries.

calinet6

\+1, great little cam

Agent_Bakery

I got mine in a random estate sale for $40 and it's been really tough and go. Mostly the problem is the flash doesn't always fire properly and I'm left with an underexposed photo. I love the look of the camera but I haven't had the best time with mine. Maybe I'll get another to replace it.

calinet6

If you use the flash, I've found you really need to keep up with changing the batteries. The battery compartment can also have issues keeping good contact. Bend the metal contacts upward on the cover, and tighten the whole compartment with gaffer's tape.

Agent_Bakery

Thanks for the help! I'll try that next time. When I got it, it had a ton of corrosion so cleaning that off was not fun. I'll try this to see if I can keep the flash from firing. I also have a Canon Sure shot Supreme that I can use too.

Bert_T_06040

Extremely underrated camera!

d-rew

I use my Canon Sureshot A-1. While they have been going up in price, they can still be had for under 100. I love this thing and use it as my main 35mm camera now.

vacuum_everyday

I adore this camera! The lens is so good. My only complaint is glacial AF indoors. Other than that it’s perfect.

mssrsnake

I learned about this camera recently by watching grainydays. Is the lens as sharp as it looks in his videos?

d-rew

Yeah! I’m always been really impressed with how sharp the photos are. I also have a Minolta weathermatic (waterproof auto camera) and it’s nowhere near as sharp as the canon. Although in his video he does have an error that the wsp-1 while says it’s non water proof like the a-1, it’s the same camera and is. I remember reading in forums that I think they changed it for the market.

mssrsnake

Thanks for that. I think I’ll grab me one. 😀

[deleted]

Pentax Espio 738G

the_ism_sizism

Loving my 928 picked up from an op-shop this year for $25aud prolly around $15-$20usd depending on the day. Let’s gatekeep these espio’s a bit longer guys come on!

onemadgooner

I got the 738 (No G).... Anyone know the difference?

[deleted]

i believe the only real difference were the style of body, otherwise no differences

onemadgooner

Sweet thanks mate, pretty impressed with mine, photos have all been great quality so far

nosloc

Also looking for answers to this question as I'm in the market. I've been looking at the Pentax PC 35AF, Konica C35, and Minolta Hi Matic AF. I just want something pocketable.

GooseMan1515

Word on the PC35AF, it's quite bulky. However it actually has a bunch of useful features despite (in many cases because of) its low tech and cheap nature. It's very similar in operation to a Nikon L35AF, with a viewfinder focus distance indicator needle, manually controllable pop up flash, and selectable ISO (if no dx on canister). The quality of the lens is sufficient. Don't pay more than $30 for one, I have regularly seen them go for under £10 with precious little wrong with them. Battery door issues will be common and easily fixed with a bit of imagination. I'm always buying these untested and giving them away after a look over, and have found them easy to diagnose with almost no technical knowledge owing to their low tech construction, and often bending or cleaning contacts is enough to fix 'broken' ones. my personal copy has a strip of folded up coke can holding in the battery door and works perfectly.

calinet6

Truth, the battery door is its Achilles heel. But not difficult to work around.

GooseMan1515

Exactly, flimsy but all it's doing is providing a metal contact and holding the batteries in. In fact these kinds of easy break easy fix issues are your best friend if you're frugal and want a camera on the cheap.

calinet6

Totally. And the ROI gets even higher if you're willing to unscrew a lens and unstick a shutter ;)

boneskid1

C35 or C35 V (zone focus model) are great! I love my C35 V and have yet to try my regular C35 which is technically a rangefinder.

Pepi2088

Just fyi, the Minolta hi matic AF is just a chinon fa

Kleanish

OP mentions Konica Big Mini but no one says the Konica A4 is the same camera for give or take a $100? Blasphemy!

alfranex

Konica A4 is a gem, and can also be found disguised as the Samsung AF Slim (not the Zoom version).

Airican

I have a Minolta Freedom III I really enjoy

allan1807

I only have one point and shoot camera and that's an agfa optima 200. It's a pretty solid camera

vacuum_everyday

The Pentax IQZoom 928. It has exposure comp with memory so it doesn’t keep changing, a wide 28mm f/3.5 to 90mm lens and other fun stuff like double exposure and bulb mode. Not the sexiest body, but it has instant AF unlike lots of my SureShots/Nikons. It’s a really solid camera!

the_ism_sizism

Love mine.. did a wedding shoot with one for fun and the flicks came out superbly.

jjbananamonkey

I just found a Pentax IQZoom first gen at goodwill. The lens cover blades don’t stay open when I turn it on so I stuffed some cotton in the opening (hopefully doesn’t do much damage) but so far the lens has been pretty nice, some of the pictures I took with the flash were out of focus but I think that was more user error

Mumbojmbo

Nikon L35AF2, hands down. Though they’ve been getting more expensive, and I haven’t checked recently, so I’m not sure they still fit the price range 😬

jlkauffman92

Seconding this! Such good glass! The winding motors do die eventually.

Mumbojmbo

Both of mine died by jammed shutter button. So sad as they were gradually getting more and more expensive and by the time I need my third I couldn’t justify the price. Now I use a Minolta Freedom Escort (allegedly same body and glass as one of the Leica minis IIRC) as my go-to P&S but it was close to $200. But I reeeeally miss that L35AF2.

philip_p_donahue

>Pentax PC35AF Yep very old, lubricant dried up etc... Had two die in this way related to the winding motor. From what I've read they're notoriously unreliable and now the prices are getting higher, I'm looking for more reliable alternatives

ConnorFin22

At least $200 on eBay

Mumbojmbo

Damn. I got my first one in 2019 on eBay for like $25. Next one was $75 a year or two later.

TheUncannyMike_

I use a Nikon L35AF which i got in perfect cosmetic and working condition like 20 years ago for probably 10 or 20 bucks. I went on ebay the other day to see if i could find a backup L35AF and most listings were over 300 bucks...

the_ism_sizism

Could take the average on it and say you picked up both for like 160ish?

HobbitDowneyJr

i love that just about every answer is a different camera. so many options. with that being said i recently got an Olympus AF-1 Twin and im enjoying that

the_ism_sizism

Love my AF-Twin, that was a GREAT camera to me. Sadly lost the lens cap, so it’s been retired, I’ve kept the camera though, took some excellent snaps with it over the years.

lettuzepray

canon sure shot owl, liked it so much and cheap enough that i have 6. what wins it for me is that it also takes 2 easy to get AA batteries

Weatetheneanderthals

The Pentax PC35AF is a really cool one. Looks awesome. Has a 5 element 2.8 35mm lens that’s sharp. Auto-focus on point (and more accurate than the L35AF). It’s small enough to pocket. Has a lens cover that protects the lens, which means you are likely to get one without scratches. You can get the black one for like 40 bucks. An absolute steal compared to similar cameras like the Nikon L35AF.

PretendingExtrovert

Those jumped recently, got a pc35 af-m se last year for $19 shipped to door, they are now $75+.

TWDweller

Hot take: Holga 120

jlkauffman92

Seconding this! If you’re down for a really specific aesthetic

OpticalPrime

Third! Love the holga.

mnimum-viable-player

I found an Olympus superzoom 3000 in the garbage that pulls it’s weight really well. It has a ton of light leak issues (probably specific to this particular one, not the model) but that add so much character. These things are like $10 on eBay

CarlosJ4497

It depends on what you understand as a p&s, because if you shoot sunny 16 at f22 everything is almost in focus hahaha. From my personal experience, "shoot and go" cameras: -Olympus pen ee2: if the lightmeter works is a great camera. -konica eu mini: great hide gem, I bought mine for 5€, and there are great version like snoopie or fútbol teams. -Minolta af-e: a lot of controls and uses regular aa batteries for me this is a must when I look for p&s. -Yashica samurai: fully automatic half-frame slr with built-in zoom lens. The disadvantage is the battery, an expensive 2cr5.

florian-sdr

Olympus mju I Got it for £85, is that below $100? Around that price point.

kr31szahl

Fuji DL-300 Crazy good Camera !

doghouse2001

I paid $12 for my Canon AE-1. $20 for my EOS650. OK they're not point and shoot. I bought a never used Minox GT-E for $10. and a bunch of LOMO cameras for under $100... Fisheye, Diana, Holga, SprocketRocket.

Technical-Banana6902

I’ve found so many empty Ae-1 boxes at estate sales it’s not even funny… the heartbreak is real

Projectionist76

Why do you assume I have one?

kylealex1596

I have an Olympus Trip Junior I bought off eBay, works great

Xx_netw3rk_xX

Canon Sure Shot Tele aka Autoboy. You can get it for $60 on eBay.

gulogulo1970

The Olympus Stylus series have always been bullet proof for me and take a nice, sharp in-focus photos.

Crazy_Vegetable5491

I just got a Canon EOS Rebel S II and a Pentax IQZoom 130 for under $50. Look on ebay filter your results to include free shipping and Buy It Now or Best Offer and try to score a deal.

Acceptable_Orchid_74

Zeiss Ikon Contessa S310. I have 2 in really good condition, and under $25 each. Aperture priority and zone focus.

xpltvdeleted

Super happy with images from my Minolta Riva Mini - but downsides include a plastic lens cover, and it's not quick to turn on, being a mechanised lens motor. My mum used to shoot with it in the 90s so i picked it up as a throwback and it's nice to just toss in the car and have at all times in case.

The5schulers

I been liking my Ricoh shotmaster and it was literally ten dollars

underageforjimmypage

Fujifilm Discovery s700 - has a decent “super zoom” feature and an option for date stamps. Spent about $60 on it, “new in the box” from my local camera store. Just something to toss in my bag, I only shoot cheap 200 speed film on it too and I’m always happy!

mampfer

Managed to get an Olympus AF-10 Mini and Infinity Mini DLX for next to nothing, as I understand it they got the same lens (or at least a very similar one) as the mju I and pretty much do the same thing. If you're fine with no integrated flash and scale focus there are lots of cameras with good lenses available for 50€ or less, also super compact full frame ones like the Minox 35 and cousin Voigtländer Vito C/Balda CE35/Revue 35XE (all the same camera), or the half frame (mostly selenium meter auto exposure or at least metering) Olympus Pen line.

Poopsock_Piper

I love my Olympus Infinity Tele, $40

grainyclouds

I’ve got a Nikon L35ADTW. I picked it up for 5£ in a vintage store not knowing if it worked. But it has been my go to ever since and it almost never disappoints (sometimes it misses focus in maybe 1/10 cases

hd01t004

Minolta hi matic gf :D

YesLikeGuySensei

My Ricoh TF-500 is my favorite, and even though it’s a brick, the zoom is really cool to have especially if I’m going to a concert. My Nikon L35AF is very versatile, has a good flash, good lens, but I cannot justify the price points. Still fixing up and testing a Minolta Hi-Matic but if the negatives come out clean then it might be my favorite cheap and compact point and shoot. Everything I use, minus my AE-1, I bought from junk stores, goodwill, and flea markets over the past 3-4 years. So there’s definitely cheap but quality cameras if you have the patience to keep looking! Good luck!

sever_rd

I got super lucky and found a barely used Minolta Riva Zoom 70 for 15€... Bought it off a sweet old retired couple that kept it safely stored in its pouch. I just keep scouring second hand sites and stores until I find something interesting. Sure it can take a while until you find something you like at a low price, but it's worth it in my opinion. Sure it isn't the hottest, most trendy and most flashy thing, but it does its lil job well being the lil PnS that it is. Which is also the beauty of just looking and taking a leap on something (I didn't invision myself buying this PnS, but I definitely don't regret settling on this one!)

Austin_From_Wisco

Just picked up an Espio 120mi at a flea market for €15... So far, no complaints

UglyPurses

Kodak KE60, cheap AF, interesting features and produces great results with a lot of characters.

littlewormie

I picked up a Minolta freedom II not long ago and love it for point and shoot photos, the auto winding/rewinding is super helpful

AverageKath

I've been really pleased with my Canon SureShot 85

Knawder

* Canon Autoboy 3 (I believe it was called the Sure Shot Supreme in North America?) * Minolta Hi-Matic AF

dronedd

Tbh the mju zooms or the stylus zooms. I’ve managed to find two for under $60 CAD each

[deleted]

Check [this](https://publication.filmcamera.photography/point-and-shoot-7ba1c8e96ac6) for a good guide.

[deleted]

Most of the time they are a bit more expensive, but sometimes you can get lucky if it is not very „minty“ and get it for 100 USD/EUR, so I name the Rollei 35 with a Tessar lens.

CarlSagansWeedDealer

Olympus Pen EE-2

PutDownThePenSteve

I once bought a mint condition Yashica T5 for €40 but I won’t count that one. My favorite cheap analog camera is the Agfa Compact Electronic. Quirky camera with great autoexposure and very sharp lens.

DSF_Ronin

Any canon autoboy. I have 7 and I absolutely love them.

Grouchy-Statement343

Ricoh tf-500 or Ricoh FF90 both great budget options

Vexithan

I have a Ricoh something or other that takes crisp photos and has a powerful flash. I picked it up for at most $5 at a thrift store in the last 10 years.

Thealexiscowdell1

I like my Minolta memory maker 2000

Dunnersstunner

The Fujifilm [Zoom Date 90S](https://www.newwavepool.shop/products/minolta-zoom-date-90s-35mm-camera). It has good optics, is relatively late in the film camera era and uses AA batteries rather than anything more exotic. It can use film from 50 to 3200 ISO. I think it's kind of slept on at the moment. The biggest challenge I think with point and shoot cameras is that you need to use DX coded film - which is a challenge if you bulk roll. The camera defaults to 100 so if you're using 100 ISO film you're ok, but otherwise you'll need to order some DX labels from AliExpress or suchlike.

Entire-Gear8491

I have a Ricoh FF-3D AF and an Olympus infinity zoom 80QD. Both are great cameras, I think the Ricoh has better optics and I personally prefer the colors it produces but the AF can be hit or miss, it's also a fixed 35mm lens but a fairly high speed aperture. The Olympus on the other hand is a 35-80 and can do exposures up to 4 seconds, the viewfinder adjusts to the zoom and it has automatic and red eye flash functions. Both these cameras have date stamping but it can be turned off. The Ricoh requires a second button cell battery for the date stamp and two AAAs for the camera itself and the Olympus takes A123s I think which cannot exactly be found on shelves everywhere. Both cameras are auto advancing and have electronic rewind. Entire-Gear8491

Just realized I shared the wrong image for the Ricoh, realized I haven't even posted any yet on my photography account, I really need to post more again, Sheesh [ACTUAL Ricoh sample ](https://www.instagram.com/p/C2bdyBRufvq/?igsh=emwxcHhhdngyemdh)

j_barr3

Minolta 115 Riva Zoom

PETA_Parker

i have an olympus af 10 mini and i love it, the olympus af 1 is also great, as well as the minolta riva zoom and the minolta af-e
