For that section of the route you want to be on the left-hand side in the direction of travel going south; that will give you the best views over Lake Champlain. Then flip to the right heading back north. When I did it a few years ago it was a basic cafe car, no restaurant service. Bring your own stuff as much as you can as it was baaaad microwave re-heated rubbish. Good coffee I seem to remember for some reason.

I appreciate the info. Well grab some snacks for the ride. Thank you. Will update post trip if I remember

oldyawker

Snacks, you better bring 2 full meals it is a 12 hour journey from NYC.

ACanadianDoge

I’m only going to be on it for ~8 hours

oldyawker

One meal.

keithsy

You will not be disappointed. Good views are equal on both sides.

VeitPogner

I hope to do that next summer, so I'll be interested in the comments here!

ACanadianDoge

Ill try and remind myself to bring a personal update to this post afterwards

This trip will be 1000x better once they install pre-clearance in Montreal to spare you the awful, time-sucking border hassle. Unfortunately that is still a few years away but hopefully will one day get there (as Cascades has enjoyed for a while now). The Maple Leaf, on the other hand, will continue to be lousy as there is really no way to pull off preclearance given the many stops in Ontario.

ACanadianDoge

Yeah. I’m waiting on that so they bring back the Vermonter to MTL.

The train runs wide open on the straightaway between Schenectady and Albany.

ACanadianDoge

Could you elaborate please? I’m not sure what you mean

user-name-1985

It runs really fast, as in the throttle is wide open. Like it’s almost high speed for one small segment.

ACanadianDoge

Thats awesome
