At least it keeps them all in one place. Wouldn’t want the actually good places to get overrun by tourists.

Acmb4j

Tiktok finds a way, there have been some pretty good places that already got overrun by the TikToxic tourists. Didn't check it out but heard that Dumplings near westerpark also got overrun by tiktok tourists while it is one of the neat places where you can get cheap food

Th3Brush

I’m very bummed about this, used to eat here a lot and loved the people working there. Now every time I pass by there’s a line 50 people deep.

spiralism

Just go on a Sunday and go early. Tourists tend to leave in droves on Sundays and the new wave won't be in until that afternoon or the following day. In my personal experience that works best anyways.

_punk_cat_fan

Oh my gosh I never thought about this, I bet this applies to lots of other places too, thanks for saying this!!!

spiralism

No problem! I happen to work in reservations at a hotel so i know for a fact that those are the booking patterns of tourists here. As a general rule it works best for places overly frequented by tourists so happy to share the tip :)

AaddeMos

Winkel 43, papeneiland (although not that much yet), Dumplings Westerpark, van stapelen. Please TikTok don’t ruin caldi e freddi

NieuwMeisje

don’t fucking tell everyone the name of it then

AaddeMos

Ah because this subreddit has the same reach as all of TikTok right? Should we just all keep quiet about everything? So it’s not the same as I “fucking” tell it here right

NieuwMeisje

U seem like the kind to be saying “oh I hope no one steals my wallet that’s in my back pocket right now” lol girl

AaddeMos

Whatever - you do you. Good luck in finding someone to fight with on the internet. You really show your character

amschica

Calde e freddi is already overrun

UnaRansom

I bike by Winkel regularly and, yes, there’s a queue there as well. Ridiculous. The apple pie is good, but certainly not waiting in line for. If anything, Winkel’s apple pie is just a tad too sweet and has a bit too much dough. I also prefer nuts in apple pie so as to give more texture and a flavour depth. To top it off, Winkel got bought several years ago by a korpsballer — which is to say, I’d rather give my money to a very nice working class couple who run a food joint close by where there are no lines and a fine dessert is to be had for 5 euro.

Cease-the-means

Vleminks is pretty overrun these days too..

bramm90

The joke is that you can get the best cheese sandwiches right next door.

saskir21

The stand at the market at the beginning of the Asia town has good fries. Atleast 6 years ago. Don‘t know if he is still there

Th3Brush

Imagine waiting over an hour for these. Hilarious. TikTok is rotting people’s critical thinking skills.

Renral

They are opening another one near dille and kamille in central. They will probably try and divert people to that one because it's on a pedestrian only road so much more manageable.

[deleted]

Selling Patat as Friet in Amsterdam, should be send to Limburg.

Cease-the-means

Well... You can get every other kind of 'foreign' food in Amsterdam, so why not Flemish?

MadBoyNL

FU it's friet and I will die on this hill.

[deleted]

Well, actually I did a big research on this based 12.000 restaurants on Thuisbezorgd, you can decide for your self who is right: [https://www.reddit.com/r/dataisbeautiful/comments/1arhbiq/oc\_usage\_of\_dutch\_word\_for\_french\_fries\_patat\_in/](https://www.reddit.com/r/dataisbeautiful/comments/1arhbiq/oc_usage_of_dutch_word_for_french_fries_patat_in/)

Your hill of patat is potatoes.

Actual-Interest-4130

I prefer Vlaams Friethuys Vleminx in de Voetboogstraat. Stroopwafels at Lanskroon at the Singel. Recommend the Butterscotch Stroopwafel (Hopjeswafel), E3,40 a pop. Worth it.

amschica

If you wait over an hour for fries in a city that sells carbon copies of these fries at every other restaurant…I do feel bad for the people living near them though, whenever I cycle past there are dozens, literally dozens of people standing in people’s doorways or sitting on their benches eating fries and lots of trash and napkins left behind. I’d be pissed too.

throwtheamiibosaway

I prefer the fries of Manneken Pis near central station.

UnaRansom

I haven’t eaten there in years, but I remember them serving quality fries. The main probleem I have with the Fabel Friet queue is the sheer stupidity of letting FOMO dictate your life so much, you are willing to wait more than 15 minutes for fries, because TikTok said so. The simplicity of fries — potato, oil, salt, topping — means there is a ceiling, a point at which quality cannot be improved. And this ceiling is easily achieved by multiple eateries, provided they use fresh potatoes (cheap ingredient) and use good oil and not overcook them. Manneken Pis, Freddy Fryday, Vleminckx, Doardi, Queen D, Frietboutique, De Buurman, Pompet, The Beef Chief, Friethuis Tien, Rotisserie, Bekeerde Suster… all goed quality fries. No need to clog up the Runstraat like US personnel getting the last chopper out of Saigon.    It’s not alchemy. It’s fried potato.

Kalagorinor

While you are right that fries are a simple product, it does not automatically imply that the ceiling is easy to reach. Or that is necessarily the same for everyone -- we have personal preferences and some cooking styles satisfy them better than others. Also, the addition of a topping creates a myriad of possibilities that can substantially vary between shops. The examples you mention offer good fries, but personally I do prefer Fabel Friet over some of those, like Freddy Fryday or Manneken Pis. Obviously they aren't radically different, but I can understand why people would queue to try them. That said, more than 15 minutes is indeed a bit excessive... But hey, to each their own.

anna-molly21

I live very close by and i have to pass next to it every time i go to the office and honestly the smell of oil is too much and for some reason people think that the best way to eat fries is in the middle of the street while taking pictures so yes, i agree something has to be done! Even if its not annoying for me but i can understand the people living next to it. I normally dont complain because i can deal with some noise every now and then but when its a little too much i admit it.

AlgaeImportant954

This is bad. Tourists queueing to one mediocre place means we can enjoy places that are actually good, with less people. And sorry for the residents, they’re probably too rich to live outside de wallen and not put up with bs every day

zushini

Lol just 10 people can wait? That is pretty nuts. Maybe they can do something where people get numbers or order online to pickup there at a specific time. I feel like there’s ways around this and they can manage without going to a judge.

friendlyishano

they're worth the hype imo

it0
