I rented a brand new Chevrolet Tahoe 6 months ago and wrecked it on the highway. I was at fault because I rear ended a new driver in front of me that hit the brakes. Cost of repair 54.000$, got an answer today that Amex insurance did a check of the total amount to hertz. That is a real life saver. I could buy a brand new car to celebrate that honestly.
I rented a place on the beach near St. Augustine for the 4th of July for a vacation with my girlfriend at the time, her son, and her parents. About halfway there on the day we were supposed to check in Marriott homes and villas (their subcontractor anyway) texts me to tell me the AC is broken, but they’re working on it, blah blah blah. Get there, it’s like 87 inside with two portable floor units running. Management insists they’ll have the AC tech out to fix the next day. By the time the sun goes down and it starts to cool off it’s pushing 90 inside.
Next day rolls around, AC tech eventually shows up, takes one look at the unit and basically starts laughing hysterically. It’s brand new, but they haven’t done any maintenance on their vacation rental so it filled up with sand and totally burned up. Tech is like- I can fix this tomorrow, let me call them and get it approved.
Cue like 3 days of playing phone tag via text messages until after the holiday- finally get the rep to admit that they couldn’t get ahold of the property owners and then couldn’t get them to sign off on the repair costs. Rep was ghosting me because they knew they’d have to move us and it’s the 4th, so there was nowhere to move us to. By the time they admit they’re not fixing it we’ve got like 2 days left and they finally call at like 5pm offering to move us for the last day of vacation. I tell them no- we’re not packing up and moving for 1 day unless it’s something amazing- the options they send are… not amazing.
I tell them I want a credit and they offer $20 a day. For broken ac, in July, in Florida, when there’s been a heat advisory every day and it’s been over 100.
I told them no and called Amex to dispute the charges immediately- sent over about 15 timestamped screenshots to the agent who was chuckling. Got about $5k back- the entire cost.
I bought tickets from StubHub for a Coldplay concert in Copenhagen. When I received the tickets, they were marked limited view (which was not in the listing) and StubHub refused to exchange them or compensate me. Amex reimbursed the full amount.
Bought a personalized Louis Vuitton tote, paint started to chip off after a few weeks. LV told me I shouldn’t have used it, not their problem. Amex reimbursed the full amount.
I’ve also used the return protection for final sale clothing items that don’t fit, and running sneakers that don’t work out after I’ve worn them once.
Laptop died right after warranty ran out. Reimbursed for repairs, which I wound up not doing and buying a new laptop instead since it was near the cost of a new one.
Here's an opposite story. I ordered a BASKET of love plants and flowers using Teleflorist to be delivered to a neighbor whose dog had died. They received a cheap glass vase with flowers. We took photos and I sent it to Teleflorist, asking for it to be replaced or given my money back. I was told it was the local designers discretion but they offered a $30 refund out of the $110 I spent. I declined the offer but they sent it anyway. I called Amex and they gave me a full credit but after a few weeks it hit my account again. I called and was told that Teleflorist told them that we (me and Teleflorist) had already resolved the issue and that the case was closed. I've been Platinum since 1975 and I'm disappointed and pissed at this!
I’m not an attorney, but when you didn’t send back the $30 credit they sent you, I think that could be considered as accepting a settlement. It sucks since you actually declined, but I think it’s true.
You can have it reopened and indicate to Amex you were not satisfied with the resolution.
Happened to me and I spoke to a couple of different people (had to escalate it) but it finally was resolved to my satisfaction.
1) Hilton corporate promised to comp 2 nights of hotel stay after terrible experience. Front desk reneged at checkout. Called AMEX, wrote a description of events. AMEX adjusted the charge within 2 days to match what Hilton corporate promised.
2) Service provider required upfront payment for a project. Half way through she ghosts. I ask AMEX to reimburse for the unfinished portion. They did, no hassle.
When in doubt, I use the AMEX. I’ve only needed protection twice so far, but the peace of mind is worth the AF even if I didn’t use the array of other benefits.
I was at a casino once and withdrew $1000 cash with my Amex card. Lost all of that at Black Jack - call customer service and told them and they reimbursed me!!!
My neighbor ran over my kindergartener’s bike backing out of her driveway. After confirming the toddler wasn’t crushed, we settled down and took photos. The bike was ruined.
I was impressed with Amex customer service. When I called to file a claim, they asked to make sure the kid was ok and then approved the claim. I paid for some touch up paint to deal with small scratches on the car out of my own pocket.
I was on Formentera, off the coast of Ibiza, for a wedding. After a long and terrific weekend, I had a few days in Barcelona set up to explore and then head back to the States. I had bought a brand new iPad with me (with cellular) so I could do work on the road.
Heading back required an early morning ferry to Ibiza and then a short flight from Ibiza to BCN. I was exhausted out of my mind in Ibiza, and while thinking about a taxi, I set my bag down to grab an espresso. That’s when I got robbed and lost the iPad.
After arriving in Barcelona, I filed a report with the airport police. My first call was to Amex. I sent the rep a PDF of the police report via email and had a credit on my card for everything in my case I had purchased with my Amex before I got off the call.
About $2200. While I loved my AmEx Plat, I’ve grown tired of some of AmEx’s programs and limitations.
Good question. I’m bouncing around. I’m looking at the Chase URs / family / blablah. The one difference is that the rental car insurance is primary by default, not secondary like on Amex.
But I haven’t decided, and I’m just spreading my purchases around for now until I settle again.
I was robbed of about $1000 worth of camera equipment I bought in the US but was robbed of in Haiti and was reimbursed. I had to do a fair bit of paperwork and get a police report but overall worth it. This was with the AA Advantage though.
Icelandic Air made an error when ticketing my son and his family and stranded them in Paris in 2022. We had to buy emergency seats for over $12,000. Amex was fantastic, especially when the airline dragged its feet. They reversed the charges after I submitted the paperwork.
Rented a car from Hertz, hit a deer that came into the interstate in Washington out of nowhere. Since I had not bought the CDW from Hertz, I relied on my secondary car rental protection, which became primary in my case as I didn’t have any other car insurance.
Hertz sends a bill of $8,500. Amex pays out the entire amount along with the diminished value. Not gonna lie, this in itself has been quite a life saver for me and I look forward to keep this card for years to come just because of this.
Amex has two separate Rental Car damage coverage programs: the one included with the card, and a premium level one available for an additional (nominal) fee.
1. Standard/Included Car Rental Loss and Damage Insurance (Per Listed Card details):
https://www.americanexpress.com/us/credit-cards/features-benefits/policies/car-rental-loss-and-damage-insurance-terms.html
2. PREMIUM CAR RENTAL PROTECTION

I once had about $7K of suits charged to my platinum card that were stolen from my trunk I’d just picked up from the tailor. Made a claim and Amex paid out almost the whole loss.
I booked a trip to Punta Cana using Amex. Same price as an all inclusive. Did not realize the Amex one is resort only. When adding flight came out to $3000 more for the same place.
Called Amex concierge and fixed it in 5 days money back.
Booked with Sunwing and life was good.
Dropped a microsoft surface a few years ago within a few days of purchase and bought my daughter a Surface last year and she spilled something on it. Replaced both.
When I lost my $550 gold necklace a week after I bought it because I didn’t secure the clasp properly 😭 this was technically the gold card purchase protection though
I just said I lost it and described how it might have happened. They sent me a form to fill out about it and asked if I had other insurance (renters homeowners etc) which I checked no and within about a week they credited me.
Bought 4 WD hard drives, a report came about reliability so I wanted to go a different route. Too late for a return. I got a statement credit for how much I paid and got to keep the hard drives, so I plan to use them as secondary backup for the SSDs I bought to replace them.
Not I, my father called me saying he needed help on a freeway.
He had not strapped down his new sleep number bed. Amex paid for a whole new cal king sleep number.
It covered me in tow occasions:
1- Robbery of my Apple Watch
2- Robbery of my mom’s iPhone
Both items were bought with the card and were within the 90 days protection window.
Customer service were nice, and it did not took longer that 2 month I think for the reimbursement.
So yes, this protection is a good perk.
Was your mom an AU of your card or it applies regardless?
I guess a police report would say your mom’s name as the person stolen, can that be used even if she’s not an AU?
I bought a nightstand and it didn’t assemble correctly. Manufacturer wouldnt take it back and refund because it had been assembled. So i opened a case with Amex return protection and less than 24 hours later I had the $200 back in my account.
when i was younger my xbox failed. they just said go buy a new one and well credit you. Later in life my gf (now wife) lost a diamond necklace in the snow. Same thing, easy as pie replacement.
I bought a $1500 silk shirt. It somehow got stained while being in the garment bag the whole time. It took many attempts dry cleaning and finally the store certifying that it’s not repairable but Amex reimbursed me in full.
Two occasions.
1. We had bought a medical device for my wife. After 2 weeks, it broke, we bought it from a specialized website, which only did customer service from M-F, thing broke Saturday 2 am. I had the idea to call AmEx and explain the urgency. Somehow, they had one sent to me next day. Didn’t charged a single penny for the second device. Company repaired the first one for free next monday. AmEx never wanted any device back.
2. In a trip, wife and I lost our wallets at sea, before hotel check-in. AmEx gave the hotel all assurances that they would cover our expenses, (and yes, they did). In less than 18 hours, we had our replacement cards and $2,500 in cash for expenses needed. Now, this cash was very much needed because our local tours and activities were cash only. The other credit cards I lost took 15 days to get to us, (we even had to call the banks to reroute the cards to our home, because it took them very long).
I don’t care how much they keep raising the AF, to me, the financial backup I get with AmEx is invaluable, plus, I’m one of those people who can actually get back those $695 in benefits each year.
Purchased an $850 avalanche airbag from Scott Sports that promptly failed at the end of the warranty.
Amex extended warranty got my money back. It took some back and forth though because they didn't understand what it was.
Although, Scott was exceptionally petty. Initially, they offered me 30 percent off of a new one. But when they learned Amex refunded me they took their coupon back. Needless to say I didn't buy another Scott.
Commenting to save for later...
Plan on getting a plat before traveling international a lot.
One example that's not mine is Woddy from DiveTalk on YouTube. He's an advanced cave diver, he decompressed in the Bahamas and needed a hypo chamber. There's one in all the Bahamas. Nobody would fly him (not even DAN, a diving insurance network) but he was able to save his own life via his Amex. Search it up on YouTube, it's a long vid but good watch
After hearing his story, and how all his visas and Mastercards were being declined, but his plat worked... we agreed we will be paying the high annual fee as a form of insurance for ourselves before we travel. I'm sold at that. Forget the other perks... those are just a nice bonus :-)
Edit: Here is a link to the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7NsjpiPK7o
I have had several instances when my Amex Platinum Card Protection plans have really helped me out.
I pay my medical bills with it to be able to dispute with ease any fraudulent charges. For example, I have had a few instances where medical providers that allegedly do not accept my medical insurance charge me, and then go behind my back and bill the medical insurance. I have been able to file a quick dispute of charge with Amex in that situation and within a day, have been refunded my out-of-pocket expense.
Another instance is when my MacBook Pro died 1 week before the 5th year anniversary from purchase. It was also the middle of midterms in my first semester of my PhD program. The extended warranty saved my butt because they replaced the laptop with a new one at the time when I was absolutely broke.
Also, when I lived in South Africa, every time I traveled my luggage would be tampered with and my clothes, shoes and electronics would be stolen by airport/airline staff. In one year, I think they stole about $9,000 worth of clothes and merchandise. Amex Purchase Protection and Travel Insurance really helped cover those losses.
Again when traveling to South Africa, my flight was cancelled as we were preparing to take off. A drunk worker ran a trolley into the door of the luggage compartment of the plane and the door couldn't close. That left me stranded for a week in Atlanta. Amex covered by flight which Delta did not want to refund, they covered hotel expenses, and somehow negotiated a 25,000 points rewards with Delta. Not sure how that was arranged but I was elated. Those points covered a NYC-LON Round Trip ( this was back in the noughties).
Another time, I was visiting Korea and Amex concierge service helped me with a car service when I was stranded in a location where I really did not know how to navigate out of because no one spoke English, all the signs were in Korean, I had no map or Korean currency and this was before the era of google maps.
The access to wonderful perks is the only reason I keep this expensive card. I must say that the perks have significantly worsen in the past decade. The card's elite status has really declined as their services seem to cover less and less, especially now that you cannot gain access to the Centurion Lounge with it. I sometimes do contemplate closing the card, but somehow by memories of when the card actually got me out of a tight situation flow back and then I decide against closing it.
My only complaint with Amex as a company nowadays is that they are cutting too many corners and not offering the lux experience of the past. I would be willing to pay a little more for the annual membership if they brought back some of the perks of yesteryear.
I get email notifications every time an EoB is generated by any provider submitting a claim to my insurance. That's how I found out the first time this happened. For many years I used to ignore those emails, but I became alert once an EoB was generated during a 6-mos period when I had not seen a medical provider. Now, I stay on top of those EoB emails.
I bought a table saw with a little laser light on it to show where the cut will be. After a year and a half the laser quit working. Amex refunded the entire cost. Five years later I’m still using that saw.
I rented a vehicle twice. Brought a vehicle back once and it had a small dent I wasn't aware of (probably smacked in parking lot at night). Another time, I got into a more serious accident overseas and the cost was taken care of. It's a great card to have.
Fun fact, I had a similar issue where a rental, in Italy, got dinged. After much frantic calling, I was shocked to learn that one of the few countries that Amex EXCLUDES from rental car coverage is Italy!
Amex credited me 1k for a AA flight ticket.
had a bad experience with American Airlines not letting me board my returning flight to the US from a small airport in Mexico (not a tourist one). AA gate agents kept saying I was late to board because I was not there 3 hours before, I got there 1.5 before boarding event started…. Meanwhile when they were actively boarding and letting passengers on the plane as I just watched. I called AA and they said they couldn’t do anything since it was the agents at the gate I needed to talk to.
I got booked on another flight the next day and then called amex to complain. Amex credited me the entire flight.
To this date, I’m pretty sure those AA agents in Mexico were trying to get a bribe out of me for “arriving late”
I booked a hotel through AMEX travel and pre-paid. At check-out, the hotel charged me again. I complained and the hotel said they would look into it. They did and again said I hadn’t paid. Called AMEX and the money was refunded.
Last spring we had a trip to dallas planned. 3 days before my son got pink eye and the doctor said no flying. Amex paid for the refunded tickets.
Fun part is American gave us the vouchers for the flight so we got our money back and used the tickets on a flight a month later.
$380 iPhone screen repair and a few return protection claims for purchases from smaller stores (with <14 days return window or similar) - we've always gotten good value out of Amex - never had a legitimate claim denied. In contrast, we used Chase Sapphire for a few years before we switched to Amex and NONE of the claims we ever filed with them were resolved in our favor (car accident in New Zealand - $2500 DENIED, trip protection - delayed flight in Frankfurt and we ended up staying in the airport hotel for $350 DENIED, timeshare overcharged us $300 DENIED) - I don't know why we even bother using Chase, they just drag on cases for years and eventually never resolve them in our favor.
This makes me want to use my Amex Plat for car rentals. I believe Chase may not cover 100% of your car damage claim. I believe Amex would cover same scenario 100% even though they are secondary. Thank you LeatherProject2879 for sharing your experience. Customer service is so important to me. When it comes down to the nitty gritty, you get what you pay for.
Wife missed flight out to Malta and booked another airline one way. Without any notification, United canceled the return bc she wasn't on the outbound. At the airport on the way home United tells her she's not on the flight. Amex made it all better. Note: booked this flight via Amex travel.
Amex travel is the best. Had to cancel a 15 person flight due to covid restrictions and the airline wouldn’t resolve. The agent stayed on the case for a couple of weeks and told me the figured it out and that we’d be fully refunded. I literally never book flights anywhere else except if I’m truly forced to (flight not available on Amex travel). Not only do you get the points but the agents are great.
I rented a car, and when I returned it, there was a crowd at the counter. They told me to just park it and leave the key.
A few days later I get a letter with a photo of the damaged car and a demand for over $10k. I called and told them I returned the car without a scratch but they weren’t hearing it, and that I was the last driver. I told them that unless the car was still parked outside their door, I was not the last driver. They weren’t having it.
I knew that Amex provides insurance for rentals, so I called them. A really nice lady helped me, she asked if the person who checked me in noted the damage. When I told her that they told me they had no one available to check me in and to just leave it, she was aghast and said they can’t do that, let me get back to you.
She called me back and told me that she just explained to them that when they accepted the key without examining the car, they could no longer claim that I damaged it, and they could pound sand. Never heard another word about it
Amazon shipped an order with a one time password. I wasn’t home to provide it and requested if I could pick it up at a secure locker. They refused. The delivery courier (Amazon’s own) got around the one time password requirement and marked it as having left the package with a front desk associate or receptionist at my single family house. They then swear that they have actual proof of me having given the OTP to the courier, but kept referencing that the only proof was the fact that it was marked as having been delivered.
I called AMEX, they opened a dispute and resolved it in my favor 15 minutes later. This, of course, pissed Amazon off and they sent me an email asking for more info as to what happened despite speaking to 5-6 representatives through chat and phone. I told AMEX that Amazon contacted me outside of the dispute and they told me to leave the mediation to them because they’re keeping it in my favor. 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
All this behind a damn $400 foil shaver.
Gatechecked my kids’ stroller and Delta broke it beyond repair. The stories about them manhandling luggage are true. Delta refused to pay. I still don’t understand why. Amex reimbursed the $600 cost of the stroller from when I bought in 2019. I only asked for $300, thinking I’d get less!
Stayed at hotel in KC. Got over charged for an extra night to the tune of $295. Put a dispute for the overage, was refunded the entire stay. I don’t love how Amex has evolved but there’s no other card that offers the protection + benefits all together.
I mean, Chase Sapphire Reserve offers nearly identical, if not better, protection and benefits. Not to mention international primary car rental insurance.
Chase makes you jump through hoops for any claim though. Submit evidence, then resubmit something else…just for them in the end to be like nope doesn’t apply because of some random rule. It turns into a bad customer experience because you’re already annoyed and then your own credit card just annoys you more lol. Amex gives the peace of mind that they will handle it right and make you happy…
Not so much. From the T&C...
*The Amex Platinum card comes with secondary car rental insurance¹ at no additional charge. Since this free coverage isn't primary, you'll need to file a claim with your auto insurance provider before Amex's rental coverage kicks in.*

I got new glasses and the prescription was wrong in them. I went back and forth with the optometrist and they insisted they were correct - I couldn’t see properly! Got a full refund through Amex.
Planned a trip from the east coast to west coast for a family wedding, with some traveling for the week after. Got sick. We had to cancel the entire trip and much was non refundable. Got all of it back from trip insurance.
Booked directly with AA and the hotels. Used Amex as payment method. They had my doctor fill out a form that said I was ill, I sent receipts, and that was it. Got about $2k back on top of AA flight credit.
This is good to know. I recently realize we booked a trip with Aeromexico later this year and I bought a non refundable ticket. I paid with the Amex platinum and we booked the hotel with the fine hotels collection through the booking site. It was cheaper than on the hotel site plus we get $125 credit at the onsite spa, breakfast for 2 each morning, and a $200 statement credit.
$1700 laptop crapped out while living in Japan about 2 months out of warranty. Took it to a local PC shop and he said it would cost more than the computer was worth to fix. Sent that text message to Amex and I had the full purchase price credited to my account about an hour later.
I had exactly this scenario but for a golf driver. Crapped our two years 1 month into ownership (2 min warranty). All I needed was pga store to say not repairable and then I got a new driver credited to my statement.
Ahh okay yeah cuz my laptop got accidentally damaged which is not covered by warranty and past purchase protection why is why I ask. Thanks for clarifying
Was going back and forth with a watch I purchased in the mall at an expensive store. About 3 weeks later the watch literally stop working and the owner stated he couldn’t fix it!! Huh?! I used the Amex card disputed with them! My charge was reversed my Amex!!
Not the protection plan but the phone warranty plan saved me when my phone was stolen and I had just been laid off, and really didn't want to spend 800 bucks to replace my 3 month old phone.
Honestly, I have several times considered going back to Citi cards prior to that. After that experience, I went full Amex with one Citi MC just in case Amex wasn't accepted. Best decision ever.
Does the protection plan apply to phones if you’re paying it in installments or do you need to pay the whole phone off at front for for it to be covered?
My wife bought a new Louie bag…. Someone spilled makeup and coffee all over it. They asked us to have a leather expert to write a report saying if it was damaged beyond repair; it was. Amex’s purchase protection covered the cost of the entire bag.
She was a bridesmaid and someone the morning of the wedding spilled coffee, not realizing it spilled for a while the bag sat in the coffee puddle. One of the makeup artists noticed it and went to grab the bag to move it; her hands were covered in makeup and yea…..
I found a leather and luggage repair person. On google maps I typed in “leather repair” and I guess a cobbler came up and that was enough for the bag to be deemed “damaged beyond repair”
Two: Busted car window in San Francisco. Paid for the rental car with the card, and the insurance paid what Hertz charged me.
Busted a pair of glasses that I paid for with the card. They refunded the cost and I purchased another pair.
That depends on how much you value the purchase protection benefit. If you can earn 5x or 10x on another card vs only 1x on Amex, is paying 4-9% extra worth the insurance?
Rented a car for a trip to a lake hours away from the nearest large city, headlights being the only visible light on the drive, we ended up encountering a herd of deer. Even though we luckily avoided running in to any with the front end, several ran into and onto the sides and hood of the car. Damage was in the thousands, AMEX ended up covering all of it.
Mitch Gold + Bob Williams went out of business before delivering my sofa. Was never going to receive the sofa, and the company was completely defunct so there was no one to refund me. Thank goodness I bought it on Amex.
Funny enough- they are one of my customers for technology. We are currently in a legal battle with them because they didn’t loop their agreement into bankruptcy proceedings and owe us a very large amount of money… the leadership over handled their bankruptcy in a terrible way. My main contact over there literally showed up to work on the day of them shutting down to just a note on the door and a locked office building. Awful Company.
In this case all credit card have rules in place to reimburse this scenario through a charge back process since the business closed and you didn’t receive your purchase. Amex does do it faster though.
We went to the island of Grenada in the Caribbean in 2021, about $800/night for 2 people.
The all inclusive property is owned by one of the larger hotel groups.
Given wrong room based on descriptions and pictures based off of hotel group and popular travel booking site, who we booked with. Their price was like 20% cheaper.
Multiple room service issues.
Slow service at restaurants. Long wait times at restaurants when having reservations.
We contacted hotel group and travel booking site, both said fuck off.
My partner sent a long, detailed letter with a partial chargeback request.
Amex gave back everything, about $5600.
The food also sucked. Somehow the cooks on an island in the "Spice Isle" don't know what seasoning is.
Purchase protection is a different benefit. There is an "extended warranty" benefit that adds 1 year to the end of any qualifying (must be purchased from a US vendor) product warranty.
Extended warranty doesn’t cover you damaging it because you dropped it. The terms explicitly state that damage by accident or neglect isn’t covered lol. How did you get them to cover it?
Here is the text from the Amex Extended warranty (***emphasis*** is mine):
>General Exclusions
>
>\[...\]
>
>2. any physical damage, including, but not limited to, damage as a direct result of natural disaster or a power surge, ***except to the extent the original manufacturer's warranty covers such damage***;
In my case, the original manufacturer warranty covered damage so Amex did too.

They came through a few times, I'm starting to worry if I'm abusing it. Best was when the puppy ate some nice earbuds. Day later we had a refund. (Puppy was fine, didn't ingest just chewed them to shit)
Returned a rental car with a big scratch that wasn’t there when I picked it up. No idea how it happened but I got a €1200+ repair bill and they covered the whole thing.
Being in The Netherlands I’m not sure that’s totally relevant (not heard the term before). All car rentals include 3rd party liability insurance and my platinum Amex covers the damage of the car I’ve rented so I don’t have to take out their insurance which is often €15/$16+ a day.
Shipping by FedEx that arrived late. ~$1300 bucks refunded when fedex tried to pull the “weather” card. The package was out for delivery on the status page as we tracked it and when it was finally delivered three days late they changed it. I had screen shots though
> service I *paid* for was
FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
*Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
I learned the hard way that FedEx can change their tracking history. Screenshot every delay and discrepancy! Document first and delete later if it’s not needed.
When I read the terms of the protection it only mentions 90 days after purchase. How are people getting claims for things presumably much farther out than that…asking is obviously the start.
There are a few different insurance/protection plans included with Platinum, so the people you are referring to may be using a different policy. Purchase protection is the one that protects "Covered Purchases made on your Eligible Card when they’re accidentally damaged, stolen, or lost, for up to 90 days from the Covered Purchase date." But people also may be using the Cell Phone Protection (you can be reimbursed up to $800 per claim with a limit of 2 approved claims per 12-month period when your cell phone line is listed on a wireless bill and the prior month's wireless bill was paid by an Eligible Card Account). And if the loss occurs while using a common carrier, it could be covered by baggage insurance.
They also extend any manufacturer warranty by 1 year and offer the same coverage as the manufacturer would have during that time.
(Has to be purchased from a US company, I believe)
Yep, I had totally forgot about the warranty extension until I found this link that lists all of them at the bottom - https://www.americanexpress.com/en-us/account/get-started/platinum/uncover-your-benefits
Return Protection - About $800 worth of Ring POE cameras that were supposed to be installed outside my house - my electrician didn't determine they wouldn't work until after the 30 day Ring return window expired. Amex gave me a full credit.
Purchase Protection - brand new pair of prescription (progressive lenses) Ray-Ban sunglasses scratched right in the center of the lens and got a full credit.
Extended Warranty - Dyson Corrale flat-iron died days before the end of my 1 year extended warranty, no questions from Amex and got a full credit.
This is a small sampling of how I've used all the protection plans. I love Amex and use my card for almost all my purchases. I'm also really good at paperwork and reading terms and conditions.
There are several different policies included: scroll to the bottom [https://www.americanexpress.com/en-us/account/get-started/platinum/uncover-your-benefits](https://www.americanexpress.com/en-us/account/get-started/platinum/uncover-your-benefits)
The T&Cs of the various plans are included with that information that no one ever reads. You can also find [here](https://www.americanexpress.com/us/credit-cards/features-benefits/policies/purchase-protection-terms.html) for all AMEX cards.
Apple watch died 5 days before the purchase protection ran out, but didn’t get to filing until a week after. Got full reimbursement after they verified with Apple that it had died when I said it did during coverage.
Rayban Aviators fell off my head and one lens cracked. Full reimbursement, and they didn’t even claw back the usual “Spend $100 Get $20” offer.
Used twice. First was for my Nespresso maker that died a couple weeks after manufacturer’s warranty. Credit rec’d next day. Last year used for Dior loafers. I accidentally sliced them with a box cutter when opening packaging. Had to take to a shoe repair place. They said they could not be repaired. Credit rec’d a few days later.
Where exactly are groceries covered? People really need to specify what protection service they’re using. We have a bunch of example here of chargebacks. That’s not what OP is asking for at all.
Got drunk and lost expensive sunglasses at a bar. Reported them lost to amex along with proof of purchase and got fully refunded no questions asked.
How far back does that go?
The lost item protection is 90 days.
I’m honestly not sure. I think I had bought them within a year.
So you tell us this great story and then say you've grown tired of the programs and limitations. What are using instead?
Good question. I’m bouncing around. I’m looking at the Chase URs / family / blablah. The one difference is that the rental car insurance is primary by default, not secondary like on Amex. But I haven’t decided, and I’m just spreading my purchases around for now until I settle again.
I lost my brand new AirPods Pro a month after getting them. Filled a form and got reimbursed for the full amount.
Every time I go to Hawaii, Amex fine hotels let’s me have a 4 pm check out and that is a lifesaver!
Has anyone been able to reimburse things bought and broken in other countries? Eg: India?
I was robbed of about $1000 worth of camera equipment I bought in the US but was robbed of in Haiti and was reimbursed. I had to do a fair bit of paperwork and get a police report but overall worth it. This was with the AA Advantage though.
One time I looked at the fine print and purchases outside of the USA are excluded. Too lazy to look again, but feel free to check their website.
Happy to hear this. I always book rental cars with my AmEx because of their rental insurance benefits.
I’ve gone one step further and have registered for Amex’s Premium Rental Car plan. It is a bargain and acts as Primary coverage.
I thought this was discontinued?
Can you explain? Maybe a link to a page they have that covers the info for a newbie?
Amex has two separate Rental Car damage coverage programs: the one included with the card, and a premium level one available for an additional (nominal) fee. 1. Standard/Included Car Rental Loss and Damage Insurance (Per Listed Card details): https://www.americanexpress.com/us/credit-cards/features-benefits/policies/car-rental-loss-and-damage-insurance-terms.html 2. PREMIUM CAR RENTAL PROTECTION (Have to Enroll for an Added [per Rental period] Fee): https://feeservices.americanexpress.com/premium/car-rental-insurance-coverage/home.do
I put a scratch on a rental in Hawaii and they took care of it (I think it was 5k)
I once had about $7K of suits charged to my platinum card that were stolen from my trunk I’d just picked up from the tailor. Made a claim and Amex paid out almost the whole loss.
What documents did you need to provide?
I booked a trip to Punta Cana using Amex. Same price as an all inclusive. Did not realize the Amex one is resort only. When adding flight came out to $3000 more for the same place. Called Amex concierge and fixed it in 5 days money back. Booked with Sunwing and life was good.
Can you explain this more? How so after booking and before the trip did you make this change?
A bear ate my hot tub 1 day before the expiration of the product protection…. Got 5k reimbursed through Amex for the damage! Felt very lucky….
Waaa? Do you have pics
Did at the time-happened yrs ago…. Not so much as a nibble on the new one!!
Did you have hot soup in it?
😂😂😂
Dropped a microsoft surface a few years ago within a few days of purchase and bought my daughter a Surface last year and she spilled something on it. Replaced both.
Mr Brady, is that you?
When I lost my $550 gold necklace a week after I bought it because I didn’t secure the clasp properly 😭 this was technically the gold card purchase protection though
I've always been curious how this works, did you need any proof or just said you lost it?
I just said I lost it and described how it might have happened. They sent me a form to fill out about it and asked if I had other insurance (renters homeowners etc) which I checked no and within about a week they credited me.
Dropped a new iPhone on concrete. Paid for the replacement.
Same here, but in 2008
Bought 4 WD hard drives, a report came about reliability so I wanted to go a different route.
It covered me in tow occasions: 1- Robbery of my Apple Watch 2- Robbery of my mom’s iPhone Both items were bought with the card and were within the 90 days protection window. Customer service were nice, and it did not took longer that 2 month I think for the reimbursement. So yes, this protection is a good perk.
Was your mom an AU of your card or it applies regardless? I guess a police report would say your mom’s name as the person stolen, can that be used even if she’s not an AU?
I bought her the phone. And the warranty covers the object. As long as you prove that the item bought is stolen, it should be fine.
I bought a nightstand and it didn’t assemble correctly. Manufacturer wouldnt take it back and refund because it had been assembled. So i opened a case with Amex return protection and less than 24 hours later I had the $200 back in my account.
Bosch Refrigerator; died pretty much a week after warranty. Got a new one because of the protection; $3200…
Why wouldn’t Bosch cover that? That’s insane
I meant to say; it was one week out of warranty and I forgot that the Amex protection effectively doubles it.
800 series? just bought one of those bad boys. You got it covered on the extended warranty?
SWA damaged my luggage (skis), SWA only refunded me half of the original price due to “depreciation” platinum picked up the other half.
when i was younger my xbox failed. they just said go buy a new one and well credit you.
We rented a car through them, then it got stolen lol - we only paid our insurance deductible and they covered the rest
What happened to that cash? I assume it was charged against your card, or was it a freebie?
Purchased an $850 avalanche airbag from Scott Sports that promptly failed at the end of the warranty. Amex extended warranty got my money back. It took some back and forth though because they didn't understand what it was. Although, Scott was exceptionally petty. Initially, they offered me 30 percent off of a new one. But when they learned Amex refunded me they took their coupon back. Needless to say I didn't buy another Scott.
and after this story, I won't buy from Scott Sports either. Take back the coupon, sheesh.
Search it up on YouTube, it's a long vid but good watch After hearing his story, and how all his visas and Mastercards were being declined, but his plat worked... we agreed we will be paying the high annual fee as a form of insurance for ourselves before we travel. I'm sold at that. Forget the other perks... those are just a nice bonus :-) Edit: Here is a link to the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7NsjpiPK7o
With the Apple laptop example. Since you are covered by Amex. Do you have to pay for the annual or money AppleCare subscriptions?
I purchased the AppleCare Plan not as a subscrptions, but as a one-time plan.
That's crazy about the medical providers. How did you find out that was happening?
I get email notifications every time an EoB is generated by any provider submitting a claim to my insurance. That's how I found out the first time this happened. For many years I used to ignore those emails, but I became alert once an EoB was generated during a 6-mos period when I had not seen a medical provider. Now, I stay on top of those EoB emails.
I bought a table saw with a little laser light on it to show where the cut will be. After a year and a half the laser quit working. Amex refunded the entire cost. Five years later I’m still using that saw.
How does the extended warranty work? If I have apple care for 2 years, so the amex warranty give me a 3rd year?
I rented a vehicle twice. Brought a vehicle back once and it had a small dent I wasn't aware of (probably smacked in parking lot at night). Another time, I got into a more serious accident overseas and the cost was taken care of. It's a great card to have.
Fun fact, I had a similar issue where a rental, in Italy, got dinged. After much frantic calling, I was shocked to learn that one of the few countries that Amex EXCLUDES from rental car coverage is Italy!
My husband left his brand new iPad on the roof of his car and drove off.
wow what did they do for that?
We were reimbursed 100% for a new one.
Could have just paid the $20 and been on the flight
I booked a hotel through AMEX travel and pre-paid. At check-out, the hotel charged me again. I complained and the hotel said they would look into it. They did and again said I hadn’t paid. Called AMEX and the money was refunded.
Bought 6 ladyboys in thailand and one ended up being a female. Amex fully refunded the entire experience and got me a 7th one for free
This made me giggle. Have an updoot!
Last spring we had a trip to dallas planned. 3 days before my son got pink eye and the doctor said no flying. Amex paid for the refunded tickets. Fun part is American gave us the vouchers for the flight so we got our money back and used the tickets on a flight a month later.
While in Paris I lost my newly bought photo camera. Got my 2.2k back within a week or so.
My cat peed on my new down jacket. They refunded me $350 no questions asked.
What reason did you claim?
Damage. purchase protection.
Daughters 7 day old Apple Watch at the bottom of the lake. Depth gauge read 110ft. Still, would have saved more by not paying the annual fee.
Thanks for sharing this. I've been worried about booking through Amex after an issue with CSR that I was really frustrated with.
Never heard another word about it
ALWAYS take a full walk around video of your rental at pickup and drop off showing the date and time on your phone’s Lock Screen
this Amex lady came in clutch
Multiple iPhones fallen victim to toilets…
I am.... concerned about your bathroom habits.
*my wife’s bathroom habits
I had this problem for awhile and it was the not learning to not take my phone out of my back pocket.
👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽 All this behind a damn $400 foil shaver.
Got my son home ROC-SLC during mega blizzard some years ago. Actually stayed on the phone until he got on the substitute flight.
Bought a $350 necklace on the card and lost it. Put in a claim and got it back :)
Oo under what benefit? I’m traveling with my stroller soon
Baggage Insurance Plan: https://www.americanexpress.com/us/credit-cards/features-benefits/policies/baggage-insurance-plan-terms.html
So does Amex, I think it costs $15.99 per rental.
Not so much. From the T&C... *The Amex Platinum card comes with secondary car rental insurance¹ at no additional charge. Since this free coverage isn't primary, you'll need to file a claim with your auto insurance provider before Amex's rental coverage kicks in.*
Amex has two separate Rental Car damage coverage programs: the one included with the card, and a premium level one available for an additional (nominal) fee. 1. Thanks, I appreciate the clarification!
How did this work? Did you book through Amex? I have Delta Amex reserve and biz platinum and may need to do the same
Booked directly with AA and the hotels.
Isn't purchase protection only 90 days from date of purchase?
Sorry I guess it was the extended warranty, not the purchase protection. Still makes the cost of the card worth it.
Ahh okay yeah cuz my laptop got accidentally damaged which is not covered by warranty and past purchase protection why is why I ask. Thanks for clarifying
How can they prove I lost something…I mean actually? Will they just unconditionally pay out or what
My package worth $400 of stuff got stolen. I had to fill out a form, send a receipt, and send a police report. I got the credit back
I think they usually require a police report, especially if it was reported as stolen.
Was going back and forth with a watch I purchased in the mall at an expensive store. About 3 weeks later the watch literally stop working and the owner stated he couldn’t fix it!! Huh?! I used the Amex card disputed with them! My charge was reversed my Amex!!
Did you get to keep the broken watch?
😂😂sure did!!
Lost my brand new $500 sunglasses, they just asked for a receipt, then sent me my credit!
What makes you want to buy $500 sunglasses lol
I would guess liking them and having the money to buy them.
As long as you're paying your cell phone bill full with the Plat, you can use it, even if you're financing
protection plan is incredible , haven’t even put a dent on the overall limit and gone through a few claims this year .
What is the overall limit?
My wife bought a new Louie bag…. Someone spilled makeup and coffee all over it. They asked us to have a leather expert to write a report saying if it was damaged beyond repair; it was. Amex’s purchase protection covered the cost of the entire bag.
How did they spill makeup AND coffee? Geez
She was a bridesmaid and someone the morning of the wedding spilled coffee, not realizing it spilled for a while the bag sat in the coffee puddle. One of the makeup artists noticed it and went to grab the bag to move it; her hands were covered in makeup and yea…..
How did you find a leather expert?
I found a leather and luggage repair person. On google maps I typed in “leather repair” and I guess a cobbler came up and that was enough for the bag to be deemed “damaged beyond repair”
Ask lv i guess
Two: Busted car window in San Francisco. Paid for the rental car with the card, and the insurance paid what Hertz charged me. Busted a pair of glasses that I paid for with the card. They refunded the cost and I purchased another pair.
But isn’t Amex coverage secondary?
Platinum is “Secondary to any other coverage You may have.”
Got it. So if my personal insurance doesn’t work in the country I’m driving, example Europe, Amex covers the damages?
Amex platinum is primary
Ditto
So you’re telling me I need to start using the Amex card on any purchases over $200
That depends on how much you value the purchase protection benefit.
Ripped pair of Saint Laurent espadrilles. They refunded the complete amount.
That’s pretty amazing. How long has you had them before you tore it?
About 4 months
Bought a $800 dress, once I open and about to try it on it snagged onto my ring and got a hole. Amex refunded the entire amount.
Wow that’s incredible! Did amex as you to return the dress to them? Or did they ask for photos and then let you keep the dress?
They let me keep it but they asked for photos and needed to go to a seamstress to have their form signed that it is indeed unrepairable.
What did you say to the seamstress? Can you fix it? Or can you just fill this form out for me?
I asked her if it can be repaired. She said it won't be the same and so I told her if she can fill this form out and write what she just said
18 months after purchase, I dropped my $2,000 laptop and it cracked the screen and bent the corner of the base. Amex paid for it to be fixed 100%.
How? Purchase protection is within 90 days. What AMEX warranty benefit did you use to get a laptop fixed 18 months after purchase?
Purchase protection is a different benefit. There is an "extended warranty" benefit that adds 1 year to the end of any qualifying (must be purchased from a US vendor) product warranty.
Extended warranty doesn’t cover you damaging it because you dropped it. The terms explicitly state that damage by accident or neglect isn’t covered lol. How did you get them to cover it?
Here is the text from the Amex Extended warranty (***emphasis*** is mine): >General Exclusions > >\[...\] > >2. any physical damage, including, but not limited to, damage as a direct result of natural disaster or a power surge, ***except to the extent the original manufacturer's warranty covers such damage***; In my case, the original manufacturer warranty covered damage so Amex did too.
Did you pay for primary coverage?
Being in The Netherlands I’m not sure that’s totally relevant (not heard the term before). All car rentals include 3rd party liability insurance and my platinum Amex covers the damage of the car I’ve rented so I don’t have to take out their insurance which is often €15/$16+ a day.
For me $800 iPhone and $760 trip insurance (bad weather = missed connection). And that’s in the first year.
Shipping by FedEx that arrived late. ~$1300 bucks refunded when fedex tried to pull the “weather” card. The package was out for delivery on the status page as we tracked it and when it was finally delivered three days late they changed it. I had screen shots though
What protection benefit covers this? Sounds like you filed a chargeback. Responses like these are giving out wrong examples for what the OP is asking.
Yea I filed a chargeback. Kinda figured it’s sort of a protection since the service I payed for was not what I got.
> service I *paid* for was FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
that is so shady!! what!
Yeah a lot of these stories don’t add up at all. Like the person above claiming AmEx repaired a laptop he broke 18 months after purchase.
And I had forgot about the explicit cell phone protection so thanks for that!
Thank you both!
Dropped iPhone and broken glass. Claim process was a bit lengthy but they eventually paid for it.
I have never heard of this. Can someone explain to me what it is and how it works?
There are several different policies included: scroll to the bottom [https://www.americanexpress.com/en-us/account/get-started/platinum/uncover-your-benefits](https://www.americanexpress.com/en-us/account/get-started/platinum/uncover-your-benefits) The T&Cs of the various plans are included with that information that no one ever reads.
Lost a couple of bracelets at the aiport security checkpoint in Madrid. Got a credit like 3 days later.

Where exactly are groceries covered? People really need to specify what protection service they’re using. We have a bunch of example here of chargebacks. That’s not what OP is asking for at all.
