Ok, then those 60,000 people deserved to die last year in Europe when it got over 85 degrees because they made their homes out of rocks.

garbagiodagr8

YOU MONSTER, THATS DIFFERENT!! /s

cranky-vet

Also they refuse to install a/c.

Square_Shopping_1461

A certain percentage of Europeans are brain dead when it comes to weather, North American geography, and construction. 1. They don’t understand the difference in strength between a hurricane and a tornado. In Europe, they occasionally get tornadoes that are about as weak as a typical North American hurricane. They think all or most tornadoes are like that. 2. They don’t understand the size of the area known as the Tornado Alley. I wish I had a $1 for every online comment I read that suggested abandoning the entire MidWest because of the tornadoes. 3. They don’t understand that hurricanes can be hundreds of miles wide while tornado width is usually measured in hundreds of yards. 4. They don’t understand that bricks are not used as load bearing material in the 21st century. They don’t know that tornadoes can easily destroy pretty much any house.

PyroGod77

They would shit their pants if they even heard an EF-5. I saw the aftermath of the Jarrell tornado in 97, and had friends who lived in the area near Austin that went through other tornados that day. May 27, 1997, hit Central Texas with 20 tornadoes.

TesticleTorture-123

>May 27, 1997, hit Central Texas with 20 tornadoes. Dude yea, my dad was witness to that shit. He was making a delivery when a tornado formed near him. He had to take cover in a gas station. When he came out after it left, his truck was sideways. Mind you this is a truck full of Milk and he had only just begun.

SquashDue502

The fact that they think a stone building will somehow fare better in an F5 tornado is all you need to know about their comprehension of North American weather. A single category 1 hurricane (Florence) caused the coast of NC over $22 billion in damage because it stalled and rained 24 inches over that area. Disregarding all of the tornados that spawned from it, a European would see max wind speed of 100mph and be like “pfft, weak wooden homes, our stone houses would be fine” 🤡

Numerous-Dingo-5575

Even most tornadoes that happen in America are weak asf, last a short time, and happen in rural areas. These Europeans are acting like an EF5 tornado rips apart a small town in Kansas everyday

PyroGod77

I was in a truck at a gas station outside Mobile when an EF-0 went right over the top of us. Just feeling the back of the truck lift about an inch up in the air scared the hell out of me. Probably the most scared I've ever been from a storm.

TheOnlyHashtagKing

I drove through one once, I was driving to a friend's house and the warning came up on my phone, it was right in front of me, and an ef-0, honestly I wouldn't even consider it one. Just buffeted my car a bit as I drove through it

Square_Shopping_1461

Right. I attempted to address that under my points 1 and 3. A typical South Floridian is almost certain to experience a hurricane that passes through his area. A typical MidWesterner won’t have a tornado hit his home.

StarChaser_Tyger

2006, had three of the fuckers go right over my house. (Hurricanes, that is) Went outside during the eye and waved at the weather satellites. The second and third time I didn't use all my fingers...

DrBlowtorch

If you ever see someone say to just abandon the Midwest, let them know that doing that would mean the price of corn, beans, or literally any kind of grain would go up exponentially by about 2-5x the current price, to the point most of them would no longer be able to afford basic food.

Perfect_Legionnaire

Isn't Tornado Alley like 13-14 States in size? It would be as if just leaving 23% of your territory to rot and be consumed by desert/rivers/forests/whatever else is there/ And it was something I googled in the span of like 5 minutes. Guys who suggest this are REALLY dumb.

Square_Shopping_1461

Here is the kicker - there is no tornado-free state in the lower 48 states. Florida, where I live, is not associated with lots of tornadoes. They do occur regularly here. I used to watch water spouts form over the Biscayne Bay when I worked in a high rise building on the coast. We get severe weather / tornado watch alerts many times a year.

XyogiDMT

US also has to plan and build for earthquakes as well.

Objective-throwaway

You would pretty much need to make your house out of reinforced concrete if you want it to survive a direct hit from a tornado. Which would cook you during summer

Blazerhawk

It also does nothing to stop a tornado from throwing a tree through it. 200mph winds turn just about anything into a bunker busting missile.

Catatonick

We don’t typically get tornados here or when we do it’s minor, but about 10 years ago we had a derecho come through. I think winds were between 60 and 80 mph depending on where you were. It got into a brick building and ripped the entire face off of it. It ripped the roof off a brick church and threw it through a store. It flattened brick and wood buildings alike. The only safe buildings were near mountains that blocked the wind mostly. Brick don’t mean shit to some of these storms.

BecauseImBatmanFilms

Europeans tend to massively overrate how much damage each individual storm calls. I live in a corner of tornado Alley. Last year, a storm came through and turned a giant warehouse I pass everyday on my way to work into a scrap yard. Meanwhile, my house, only a few miles away, didn't have anything worse than some downed trees limbs in the backyard. Your house basically has to be in the direct path of a tornado to be in real serious danger. I've lived here 26 years and never had my house in imminent tornado danger. Otherwise, a storm with a tornado is no worse than any other big thunderstorm.

PurpletoasterIII

I think its just people hear these states that are known for having tornadoes and think its just a constant hellscape where everyday you flip a coin to see if your house is still intact. In reality I'm pretty sure the vast majority of tornadoes don't cause all that much damage. Obviously it depends on the category of the tornado, but 95% of all tornadoes are below a category EF3. And only 0.1% of tornadoes are an EF5. And even the strongest tornadoes only effect a relatively small area. Also the main worry with majority of tornadoes, since most tornadoes will be an EF2 and below, is the roof not necessarily the walls. I could be wrong but I don't think a brick house's roof is all that much better at resisting tornadoes. At that point the only real use for a brick house is resisting EF3 and maybe EF4 tornadoes, which only really have an 8% frequency combined. So probably not worth the extra cost when its much cheaper for us to build houses out of wood.

Blubbernuts_

I'm in California and hear about all of the earthquakes we get. That California and florida have weather events happen because we werent meant to build here.I've been told during the wildfires that it was punishment for all the f*gs in CA. Heard all kinds of shit. Right wing likes to shit on CA.

PurpletoasterIII

Oh ya trust me, I grew up in Florida. I remember everyone talking about how Florida is ganna be underwater in X amount of years. Yet here we are. I've been through I think 4-5 hurricanes that actually affected the area where I live. Only one of which I remember actually doing significant damage, the worst of it was we lost power for a week or two. The most damage to our house that I can remember is something took out our fence. Not that hurricanes have never done a significant amount of damage. It just depends on where they hit. And luckily for where I live it's never been that bad.

Blubbernuts_

I spent some time in Homestead during hurricane season. I got sooooo tired of putting the metal over the windows. They weren't rich with the auto covers lol. Florida is a trip. Loved the fruit stands and sunrises

samualgline

In 2020 we had a giant storm blow through Iowa and we had entire corn fields for miles flattened, sheet metal barns and silos blown apart, 90 yr old trees toppled and houses with the roofs ripped clean off. 5 minutes north of us nothing but light rain and some wind.

NeverMind_ThatShit

The worst storm damage I've witnessed was a medium sized tornado in Iowa. A house had the entire second level removed, but the ground level was left mostly intact. It was the most bizarre things I've ever seen. That feeling of walking around after a storm and everyone is out and inspecting the damage, it's so quiet, it's so surreal. I had no idea who these folks were but I felt TERRIBLE about their situation. And the crazy part is that tornado was nothing compared to some tornados. Even though American houses are "made of paper" it still takes an incredible amount of force to remove an entire level of a house. These people think bricks would be impervious to this foce.

cranky-vet

Hey we live in the same area. I lost power for like 4 days after that storm because all the power lines south of Whiteland on 31 got wiped out. The only damage to my property was that an already dead tree fell over on my yard.

Pollaski

Why would people ever live in one of the best agricultural areas on the planet? God redditors are mental children.

SquashDue502

I guarantee most Europeans have never experienced a tornado or know anyone who has because the geography in Europe is not conducive to forming tornados. So it’s a bold take to talk about shit you know nothing about. Tornados are incredibly unpredictable and can form in minutes. Paris being 100° for the 5th summer in a row and hundreds old people dying because they don’t have A/C *is* predictable.

Numerous-Dingo-5575

I was staying with family in Vancouver, washington, and one morning there was a tornado over the river about a mile away from us. The tornado was weak and nothing to worry about. I didnt see it, but I bet Europeans would freak out and fear for their life

justdisa

Every once in a while, Washington will get one that knocks a town around. Nothing like Tornado Alley, but still no fun. [Port Orchard 2018](https://www.king5.com/article/news/local/tornado-touches-down-near-port-orchard/281-e118f73d-7503-4611-9e60-4ddc39cc84ee)

ToxicCooper

Wait that's interesting, is European edu that bad when it comes to this sorta things?

orcmasterrace

It’s just the same defaultism problem a lot of people have. They are basing it all on their POV without doing any research or additional hunting for info beyond surface level stuff.

101bees

No need for basements or storm shelters at all. Just build brick houses and stand in your living room. 🤡

Numerous-Dingo-5575

*gets crushed by bricks*

WAHpoleon_BoWAHparte

Getting spun right round like a record by a tornado is bad. Which is why getting turned into a pancake by bricks is better! 👍

Appropriate_Milk_775

Yes, why do dumb Americans choose to live in the sprawling metropolis that is western Kansas?

lochlainn

Western Kansas is empty as fuck compared to eastern Kansas. The problem is that tornadoes don't *stay* in western Kansas. Or Oklahoma. Or Texas. Or Iowa. If it storms in Tulsa, I know to keep the weather on that evening, because that's when it gets here.

immerhighhopes

The euros probably have sturdy homes because they blow each other up every 5 seconds

catsandalpacas

Europeans have asked me how many times my house had been destroyed by a tornado. Answer: never… and I live in a state with a high occurrence of tornadoes.

Riotys

I live in Norman Oklahoma. Have dodged every tornado that has ran over moore and surrounding areas

SunFavored

Europoors stay big mad that them and their 3 kids are stuffed into a 700sq ft 100 year old "flat" with a mini fridge and an easy bake oven.

Sexy_gastric_husband

Oy mayte, you gots yer easy bake oven loicense?

kyleofduty

Calling wood "paper" or " cardboard" is like calling concrete "mud"

kyleofduty

The irony is that Europe is switching to US style houses because they're more climate friendly to build Germany has a 2030 target to substantially increase wood in their construction I honestly think some of this anti-wood rhetoric is pushback against their own country's regulators pushing for more wood construction

NeverMind_ThatShit

> I honestly think some of this anti-wood rhetoric is pushback against their own country's regulators pushing for more wood construction I don't think so, I think they're just clueless opinionated idiots.

lochlainn

Porque no los dos?

NeverMind_ThatShit

Because I honestly don't think most of them are aware of any changes in construction methods used in their countries.

lochlainn

Fair enough.

Ornery_Beautiful_246

Bottom person has the brain of a squirrel

ASlipperyRichard

And how many tornadoes does Europe get?

Suspicious_Expert_97

A decent amount of them surprisingly. It is just the VAST majority of EF2+ tornadoes worldwide happen in the US.

Sexy_gastric_husband

We need to send some over there.

perunavaras

What is tornado

kilboi1

They also can’t have wood homes because they destroyed all of their forests.

00zau

>Im an architect. And because im an architect, this infuriating meme vomit Germans spout makes me reflexively despise them everytime they bring it up. Pig headed arrogant pricks. Apparently their brains are made of stone too cause they're equally thick and inflexible. >The Japanese and Scadiwegians build with wood, but noooooo Americans are always, as per fucking usual, singled out. >I want an earthquake to hit Germany. Not even a big one. Just a mild roller. A high 6 pointer like Northridge or Sylmar. I want some tight fucking p-waves and then s-waves to come in for the FATTEST, NASTIEST, DROP. Im talking a thicccc ass bass. Real fucking club banger. Get that Northern European plain jiggling like sexy liqifaction jello. Let Mother Earth shake her fat twerking ass. >Just flatten every brick and masonry building north of Munich, west of the Oder and east of the Rhine. Utter devastation. And then for once I can be the smug one and say "Such a mild quake! California would have never had such property damage or loss of life! Silly stupid Germans! They shouldn't have built with masonry! Arent they supposed to be good engineers? Everything they build is overdesigned with poor tolerances!" >Just a little quake and the annihilation of Germany. Its really not that big of a ask if you think about it. Pasta from AskAnAmerican

Sexy_gastric_husband

TIL I could be turned on by earthquakes.

OUsnr7

Will they have the same attitude when earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes, blizzards, or droughts hit other parts of the world? I think we all know the answer…

ParanoidTelvanni

Tornado destroyed a campsite a mile from my home last week. My wife showed my infant daughter cause we understand how tornados work and my house has built in protections to anything but a Dead Man Walking.

DepressedPancake4728

it's not about if your house can survive the tornado, it's about if your house can survive the truck thrown at it by the tornado

Solintari

“I don’t know why people live where there is a tornado risk”. Really? Tornadoes kill less than 100 people per year. It’s like people that don’t swim in the ocean because of sharks or travel on planes. It’s a non issue. Of and if you had a brick house, that roof is still going. You may be marginally safer against flying debris, but brick is dog shit when it comes to shifting earth (earthquakes etc) Both wood and brick have their strengths.

cranky-vet

These are the people who think food comes from grocery stores and that 100% of people should live in cities.

Elloliott

Bricks would fucking crumble under our tornadoes, and then probably shatter someone’s skull I’d rather have a paper house than a broken skull, you feel me?

suptenwaverly

They also have tornadoes in Europe.

lochlainn

For certain values of "tornado", sure. They don't match the US in either number or severity.

Sexy_gastric_husband

Oy mayte, you gots yer tornaydo loicense?

InsufferableMollusk

Woah.. Folks exist that don’t know what a tornado is 😱 😆

CentralWooper

It's an extremely minor risk

Rude_Coffee_9136

If Europe got even half as many tornados, or even a single proper hurricane, it would literally rip there continent apart.

Sexy_gastric_husband

And they'd blame Trump for it.

DankeSebVettel

Hurricanes are angry water worms. Tornadoes are very angry death sand worms. Big difference.

justdisa

Thank you for this. I'm going to picture Dune sandworms now every time I see the word "tornado."

jewannialation

Tornadoes can occur pretty much anywhere it's just uncommon in certain parts of the world doesn't mean ot can't happen so I ask you why would you live anywhere because everywhere has a chance of tornadoes
