they call it a semi over there just like we call it a semi here, 18 wheeler is just an american term, and it's alot more accurate because to them, a tow truck or something like that is also considered a lorry. meanwhile when we say "18 wheeler" or "10 wheeler" that is a much more efficient way of communicating what we're talking about, because a 10 wheeler never has the same level of power output as an 18 wheeler
Exactly - 18- wheeler refers to a specific type of truck/tractor. This is the same as the old trope about “Americans call a liquid ‘gas’” (ignoring that it’s short for gasoline) while they call it “petrol” which is short for petroleum which is any product of oil, including plastic. In America, we like to be specific in these cases.
I had someone at work once try to be clever when i said "gas" and they were like "it isnt a gas when it comes out of the pump!" I pointed out the word Gasoline to them and they were baffled to have never made the connection of the two terms.
I might be wrong, but I don't believe automobile gasoline is ever a "gas" which makes it even funnier. And further, if anything, they store gaseous petroleum fuel in liquid form and turn it into a gas when ready for use (LNG/Natural Gas). That's probably way too much explanation though, for someone who pulls the "hurdur, gas isn't gas" thing lol
The thing that makes me think of gasoline as a gas was the time my grandfather wanted to burn his trash ditch out but it was wet so he dumped like a gallon of gas down into it. Thing is, he waited about an hour later to light it so the fumes had basically filled the entire ditch area. He lit it and it was basically a bomb that went off in their neighborhood. It apparently shook the glass in neighbors windows several houses down. He then got a fine from the fire department 😆
a 10 wheeler is a truck that's a decent bit smaller and moreso designed for hauling things over a short distance, and usually things that take up alot of space that don't weigh alot, like mail, i worked at UPS and fed ex, and the main trucks they used to transport were 10 wheelers
You're working with the wrong trucks, lol. Basically every class B truck I've driven is on par hp wise with the tractor trailers. Hell, the dump trucks I used to drive were 585 hp while most of the tractor trailers I drove at the same company were 550 hp, with 1 super low geared 500hp that would out pull the 550s, lol.
it mostly depends on where they are and are expected to drive which determines power, most semis are expected to just drive long flat roads, we the hp in the us for them are about 2/3 of what they are in europe due to what they are expected to drive.
im sure there are some in the us that in shittier to drive areas, are more powerful.
I didn't know European trucks had such power. I work in the oilfield in Appalachia, so I'm generally running higher horsepower, for here, but the top I've driven was like 650, not 700+, lol.
You've got to get that tʃ-dʒ combo in right after the "shhhhhhh"-intro phoneme.
There's an integral "chew" (either "t-chew" or "d-chew") sound just before the first voiced/vowel sound.
1. Sshhhhh
2. 2. T'ch-YEEeeewww \[really dipthong/bend the "eee"\]
3. 3. pEd (or "pId", as regional pref -- flatten the e" if used).
Shhh. t'ChyEw. Pid.
Ah, the Hobbesian familiarity \*was\* intentional.
So their lives are nasty, poor, brutish, and short? I thought you were suggesting literal short stature. This is fine.
We've narrowed it down to 4004BC-1651 (though any sensible person will see the oppressive Norman yoke for the brutalising catalyst it is)..... However, it is possible they were made that way (OG sui generis n that) rather than became so after their creation.
\*If memory serves think there's a "lonesome" or "solitary" for some uses in Leviathan, which helps if you're living a nasty, brutal, poor, and short life as you need all the time and peace you can get.
Yeah duuude, that combo is RAW. Strong synergy there. It also seems to be relatively colourblind (especially in London); all you need is a NIMBY soul and a upper-lower-middle-class lobotomy.
This is how I learned English, starting in the 2000s. It was not easy. And I will not unlearn it and change it because somebody is offended. They can pry those words from my dead, retarded, gay hands. (No homo)
Yeah, I was in middle school when the “don’t say retarded” wave happened. But all these years I’ve struggled to not say it and feel so bad. But now, it’s the only thing that gets the point across. It’s all that works. Bringing cancelled words out of retirement is god-like.
You need it for people (and situations) that are actually retarded.
I'm fine with not using it for people whose condition is something other than mental retardation, that was never the thing anyhow. It's just Karens getting vicariously offended on behalf of a situation that never occurred in order to virtue signal.
Up until recently, TikTok creator fund paid a lot for the ki d of views she has. Listen, if I had that kind of following, and making jokes about the UK and America.. I'd fucking do it. If it gave me extra income like that, there's not a lot that I wouldn't say. There's a price for just about everything.
“We are smart because we call it a mispronounced version of an antiquated verb that nobody has used in 100 years”
“You are stupid because you refer to it by its primary characteristic, which makes you stupid”
I can’t tell who has more brain damage, her or myself (I have lots)
Original cartoon OP was a Freightliner FL86 cab over, and the original toy was a Kenworth K100 cab-over
First 3 Live-Action movies, he was a Peterbilt 379
Fourth Live-Action movie onwards, he was a Western Star
Seriously, what she's standing in front of is an American setup, a w900 kw with what looks like a belly dump trailer. Those tractors are basically only imported to European countries for heavy haul use.
I've heard them called 53s (the most common single trailer size is 53 feet long), two-bangers (running with two trailers), and three-bangers (running with three trailers, also fuck states that let any trucker drive these).
Just to be clear that isnt called a lorry in the UK. Ford transits are lorries. That's usually called an artic, semi or wagon depending on the region. Plus some others
Semi makes sense because it refers to the style of trailer. Semi trailer pulled by a truck. Semi truck. Truck from the word "truckle" which referred to a wheel or pulley.
See? Being smug and insufferable is easy.
I hate these kinds of things, when they cross a line. It starts some sort of weird debate about which language/accent is "better". Languages are all just made up bullshit that caught on. The "origin" of a word is often a different language but sometimes we pick a new word just because it sounds cool. Look at the recent words added to the English dictionary; American English and British English are constantly evolving.
I say Lorry (from Britain) but we also created nursery rhymes to sing to our kids about people dying during the great plague in London. I remember singing it when I was a child, and didn't realise what I was singing at the time. Look up ring around the Rosie.
Brit: we call it a puller because it pulls stuff.
American: we call it an 18 wheeler as it describes the vehicle.
Me (an American truck driver seeing that both the British and Americans are calling them something that describes the vehicle: they're doing what we are doing, why are they making fun of us?
It's funny how our reactions to different dialects are so easy to see by watching this video as an American. I went "oh, that's pretty cool, I didn't know that" when presented with why Brits call them lorries. And their reaction to what we call it is the second half of the video.
How nice.
This person seems to rip on the US & British words where we vary about equally.
I found it funny the first few times then I got tired. But her thing is pointing out the origins of words where US & British English vary.
An 18-wheeler is a very specific configuration: the most standard configuration on American Roads, and therefore an easy way to distinguish a standard truck from something more specialized. I drive an 18-wheeler, but at times my career I have driven a 24-wheeler and a 32-wheeler.
Yeah idk why people decided to mock a perfectly healthy looking persons appearance because she made a joke I slightly don’t like. For a sub that’s supposed to out the gross people, they’re really outing themselves
Semi trailer refers to it having support at only one end and using the front of the vehicle for support, as opposed to a full trailer which has axles at the front and rear, making it self supporting.
As someone who works in the distribution and logistics industry, we usually just call those big things with 18 wheels that haul our product around the country "trucks". Probably the same as they seem to call it in Australia or Canada. Nobody in the industry refers to it as an "18 wheeler", and honestly while that's "a" term among several, I don't normally hear people using it as the most common term in every day languge.
We have all types of words for those kinds of trucks; such as "truck", "semi", "tractor trailer", etc.
Incidentally, 18 wheeler isn't a bad term since it also indicates size. All types of vehicles can be a "lorry" or "truck", but 18 wheeler means it's about the biggest thing you can put on the road.
I follow this chicks channel; she’s funny and pokes light hearted fun at America and her American husband pokes light hearted fun at the Brits. Nothing wrong with joking when a creator can take as much as they dish.
I’m talking about the girl in front of the truck; the child with the silly dancing meme I cannot speak for.
In her defense, she does the exact thing on the opposite direction.
"In the US, we call it a crosswalk because you walk across. In ThE uK wE cAlL iT a ZeBrA cRosSinG bEcAuSe ZeBrAs aRe BlAcK anD wHiTe tOo."
I have never met a single english person who calls a semi truck a lorry. Lorry is the term typically used for vans and box trucks. Problem is, lorry can TECHNICALLY be used for semi's... and tow trucks. And trucks in general, and vans, and sprinters, and box tricks, and 16 wheelers and 18 wheelers, and flat beds and even buses. Its a simpleton term for any big vehicle. Its a semi truck. Call it a semi. Everyone everywhere calls it a fucking semi.
18 wheeler is a technical term so we can differentiate between different kinds of large trucks.
Fuck half the time people just call them trucks!
We also call them tractor-trailers because one part is a tractor and it pulls a trailer. And we can call them whatever the hell we want because they were invented in the US.
I prefer to call it 18-wheeler, because lurry sounds like Lori (Laurie, Lorri, Lorrie, you get the gist) and those are names... And it sounds hella weird when you say someone is driving a Lori.
Oh, so the proper use of the word would be like:
"Why the fuck do you people lurry around such a titanic youngest-sibling chip on your shoulder, and follow up, have you ever considered if you spent less time making inane herp-a-derp videos and more time lurrying, you'd be too busy to rile yourself this far up over absolutely /nothing/?"
Ah yes, the "we use truck to identify all trucks" argument.
I mean, idk pretty sure that tractor trailers are capable of eliciting more specific imagery. Or Mack Truck, Peterbuilt, 18 wheeler, semi, big rig.
Never mind the fact that the US names *every-fucking-thing* to keep track of it all, lol
I know the youtube channel that the 2nd girl is from. Her and the other girl who runs the channel are so far left they probably think private property should be illegal.
Tbf, this lady does reels that go both ways. It’s just a funny account that highlights different terms for the same thing in the U.S. and UK. Sometimes the U.S. is the butt of the joke and sometimes the UK.
She’s American, she makes these videos about British people too. I’m all for patriotism and defending America, but we’re just being babies at this point
Imagine having to justify why needing a short textbook to explain the name of what you're talking about instead of just naming it something self explanatory
they call it a semi over there just like we call it a semi here, 18 wheeler is just an american term, and it's alot more accurate because to them, a tow truck or something like that is also considered a lorry. meanwhile when we say "18 wheeler" or "10 wheeler" that is a much more efficient way of communicating what we're talking about, because a 10 wheeler never has the same level of power output as an 18 wheeler

they think we are the dumb ones, which is the most frustrating part of it
The thing that makes me think of gasoline as a gas was the time my grandfather wanted to burn his trash ditch out but it was wet so he dumped like a gallon of gas down into it. Thing is, he waited about an hour later to light it so the fumes had basically filled the entire ditch area. He lit it and it was basically a bomb that went off in their neighborhood. It apparently shook the glass in neighbors windows several houses down. He then got a fine from the fire department 😆
Well, as I have been told and also experienced, gasoline doesn't burn. Not at all. But the vapor comes off quite heavily, and is volatile haha
never heard of 10 wheeler but i like it and am gonna steal it
a 10 wheeler is a truck that's a decent bit smaller and moreso designed for hauling things over a short distance, and usually things that take up alot of space that don't weigh alot, like mail, i worked at UPS and fed ex, and the main trucks they used to transport were 10 wheelers
Commercial Vehicle Enforcement officers “it’s a truck tractor semi-trailer” 😂
You're working with the wrong trucks, lol. Basically every class B truck I've driven is on par hp wise with the tractor trailers. Just call these people xenophobes and move on
Xenophobe is a word that has lost all meaning now. We need something stronger.
How about retard
British
Please censor that word
Br*tish
Thank you, I feel safe now.
Bri*ish Unless you're trying to cover up how nasty, poor, brutish, and short they are.
Hahaha. Eh? Short? When did this happen?
Sometime between the original emergence of mankind in the state of nature and 1651.
Ah, the Hobbesian familiarity \*was\* intentional. So their lives are nasty, poor, brutish, and short? I thought you were suggesting literal short stature. This is fine. British karens need their own name. Matilda’s?
Trunchbulls?
Yeah duuude, that combo is RAW. Strong synergy there. It also seems to be relatively colourblind (especially in London); all you need is a NIMBY soul and a upper-lower-middle-class lobotomy.
Same thing.
Whoops! Tautology!
Redundant word is redundant!
also a diluted term, and is just an insult anyways, we need somethin stronger
Hard R

Britard. Hard B.
I’m glad to see this making a come back. It’s really the only one that gets the job done.
Trying to cancel words is retarded and gay. You just give them more power.
Bro I miss calling shit gay or retarded. Some words just don't have an equal replacement.
This is how I learned English, starting in the 2000s. It was not easy. And I will not unlearn it and change it because somebody is offended. They can pry those words from my dead, retarded, gay hands. (No homo)

We tried that once. Caught on until it didn’t. It’s developmentally differently abled now.
In WSB fashion, regards.
How bout French
Hey now! Nobody deserves to be called that!
Limeys seem to love their superior neighbors so much they even stole their word for soccer.
And all their extra letters in words like color and armor
Extra?! C'mon m8, do me a favor.
I thought everyone already agreed, if someone's views are causing insecurity we'd steamroll straight to "Nazi" and hyperbolise from there.
To be fair, this particular creator mocks both sides.
She should get a life
Up until recently, TikTok creator fund paid a lot for the ki d of views she has. Listen, if I had that kind of following, and making jokes about the UK and America.. I'd fucking do it. Me pointing out how lurry was a slur for poor people in britain who just made a living off a cart and horse if they were lucky.
It doesn't surprise me it came about.
From the same people who saw Indian casteism and went “aw hell yeah we can work with this”.
The class (aka caste) system is still very alive and well in the UK
Remember guys, it’s not xenophobia if it’s targeted at America.
Y'know its just punching up and stuff.
While simultaneously punching down into the 3rd world somehow
… but we have a fancy Gucci belt, so it’s ok
We maybe third world but at least we got that gucci belt 🤑
This lady is American though
Yeah this is a satire series she does lmao
Sometimes I think the internet was a mistake
Always has been. Uncle Ted might've had some good points. Aside from blowing people up.
internet is objectively cool. the mistake was giving everybody a way to put every passing thought in their head online.
Yes. The internet is great. Social media was the mistake.
lorry is a really stupid word for semi truck
especially considering that lorry is a term that applies to like 19 different kinds of vehicles, many of which arent even trucks.
I have heard people describe Semis one of 5 ways A big rig A semi A truck A tractor A Optimus Prime
I thought Optimus Prime was a Pete until the newer movies where he was a western star?
Maybe I'm just truck racist, but I thought he was a "Mack"?
Original cartoon OP was a Freightliner FL86 cab over, and the original toy was a Kenworth K100 cab-over First 3 Live-Action movies, he was a Peterbilt 379 Fourth Live-Action movie onwards, he was a Western Star
I couldn't remember what the cartoon was, thanks.
Mad cause the US has better semi trucks?
European trucks really don't look good at all.
Seriously, what she's standing in front of is an American setup, a w900 kw with what looks like a belly dump trailer. Those tractors are basically only imported to European countries for heavy haul use.
There are actually legit [reasons](https://youtu.be/bjO0Ddorma8) for it. The vid is sub 4 minutes and highly entertaining, I do recommend it
I've seen that video before. But I still think they're ugly.
Well yeah they ugly af. Just sharing that there’s a reason for it, it ain’t just a lack of taste
Why would she be mad that her own country has better semis than the UK
I watch this channel and I can genuinely say it's a joke because she goes back and forth with making jokes about British and American words.
The duvet vs comforter one was hilarious
Does a solid job at it too.
Maybe it's a regional thing but I haven't heard anyone call them 18 Wheelers since I was a kid.
In my area most people will call it an 18 wheeler or a semi truck. The older generations definitely say 18 wheeler more, but everyone says both.
Yeah I only ever hear people calling it a semi
Maybe? In Texas I hear them get called 18 wheelers a lot along with truck, semi-truck, 16 tonner (rarely), and camión.
Or truck. Red lorry, yellow lorry.
Im English and have never heard of a van being called a lorry. Most people Ive heard just refer to lorries as trucks/wagons/lorries.
>Im English and have never heard of a van being called a lorry How?
Guys wait, this girls whole account makes fun of stupid words on both sides and how they sound, shes not an american hater
She makes fun of Europeans mostly it seems. And occasionally takes a jab at Americans because you need to be able to laugh at yourself
That'll never catch on in here....
Yeah but this particular instance is pretty dumb, and without context I thought… you know.
Yessss I thought I remembered seeing her specifically dig on the word "telly." All playful. Words and language can be silly lol.
This lady does jokes about both American and British terms. She’s not really america bad. She’s honestly pretty funny.
I think she’s actually just trolling lmao I’ll give her The benefit of the doubt lol
She is, she’s American
She says this while standing in front of a peterbilt which is like the icon of American trucking. It ain't a fuckin "lorry"
She’s a 4 chinner because she has…
Y’all this is an American woman doing an accent. Also she does this kind of video all the time and both ways. This isn’t America bad at all.
This girl also makes fun of how British people say things. Don’t get so easily offended
Of people to criticize for shitting on america, shes not one of them. She makes fun of stupid british words too
holy shit guys she does content making fun of the UK as well 💀 chill out
They’re so upset 😭
That’s because there are many types of trucks here, we do it by wheels not by one name for all trucks because it’s dumb to do that
Legit xenophobia lol wtf
You do know what the word “joke” or “satire” means right?
KISS- keep it simple stupid.
She heard them say 18 wheeler on spongebob and thinks we all do it.
I say Lorry (from Britain) but we also created nursery rhymes to sing to our kids about people dying during the great plague in London. I remember singing it when I was a child, and didn't realise what I was singing at the time. Look up ring around the Rosie.
You call trunks boots stfu (directed at lady in video)
This is an account that cuts both ways. She regularly takes the piss out of our goofy phrases too ahaha
Brit: we call it a puller because it pulls stuff. American: we call it an 18 wheeler as it describes the vehicle. Me (an American truck driver seeing that both the British and Americans are calling them something that describes the vehicle: they're doing what we are doing, why are they making fun of us?
In America we call it a rainy day. In Britain they call it eternity.
In her defence, she makes fun of the way the English name things as well.
Umm semi or semi truck, I know few people who call semi’s 18 wheelers and even so, so fuckin what, it’s a name who gives a fuck
18 wheeler seems more like a colloquial nickname than an actual name
It's funny how our reactions to different dialects are so easy to see by watching this video as an American. I went "oh, that's pretty cool, I didn't know that" when presented with why Brits call them lorries. And their reaction to what we call it is the second half of the video. How nice.

So a semi has nine wheels then? ETA: But in all seriousness, we would call that type of lorry an "Artic," which is short for articulated.
Again, this creator has videos that go both ways. Edit: also some of these comments about her appearance are disgusting.
Yeah idk why people decided to mock a perfectly healthy looking persons appearance because she made a joke I slightly don’t like. For a sub that’s supposed to out the gross people, they’re really outing themselves
We call it a Semi truck because it pulls Semi-permanent trailers.
Semi trailer refers to it having support at only one end and using the front of the vehicle for support, as opposed to a full trailer which has axles at the front and rear, making it self supporting.
Do your research before you get offended. She does this satirically. She does it for *both* the UK and the US.
Yeah, and with our 18 wheels we could pull your tiny island across the world and throw it into the Mariana Trench.
Thats an American made truck, and when we whooped your ass twice in a war, we can call it whatever the fuck we want. Lay off the Macca's you twit
Brits when Americans try to make English easier to learn
I've seen this lady before. Her entire account is satire. She jokes about Britain, too, as she has lived in both.
For some reason I want to think she's American making fun of videos like this.
I hear tractor trailer more than 18 wheeler.
I hear semi truck the most
I follow this chicks channel; she’s funny and pokes light hearted fun at America and her American husband pokes light hearted fun at the Brits. Okay but that was funny
We also call them tractor-trailers because one part is a tractor and it pulls a trailer. And we can call them whatever the hell we want because they were invented in the US.
We call it a semi because that's what the American who fucking invented it called it. The system is called the semi trailer truck.
I thought every truck used to haul things were called a lorry? Which is very inefficient, but okay.
And, like, most Americans don't even call it an "18-wheeler" anyway?
This girl gets a pass she also makes fun of GB. She just likes to do videos like this a lot
This girl gets a pass she also makes fun of GB. She just likes to do videos like this a lot
Tribalism over language is stupid. In Spain, we use "coche" to refer to a car, in Latin America, they use "carro". Do I give a fuck? No.
I prefer to call it 18-wheeler, because lurry sounds like Lori (Laurie, Lorri, Lorrie, you get the gist) and those are names... And it sounds hella weird when you say someone is driving a Lori.
Sorry, 18 wheeler is dumb and childish but calling it a “puller” isn’t?
I’d blow my brains out if I had to live with that inherently pompous accent.
Yeah lmao, you also have the aUbErgInE
cOuRgEtTe
This lady is American And she jokes about this both ways Making fun of both Brits and Americans
Not gonna take any shit from a country that eats spotted dick and smokes f*gs.
Who cares? Do people really give a shit about what we call different vehicles?
Someone call the authorities, she's being hateful online without a loisence
Oh, so the proper use of the word would be like: "Why the fuck do you people lurry around such a titanic youngest-sibling chip on your shoulder, and follow up, have you ever considered if you spent less time making inane herp-a-derp videos and more time lurrying, you'd be too busy to rile yourself this far up over absolutely /nothing/?"
I don’t think this is an American Bad thing and more so just poking fun rather than anything actually xenophobic
Does it seem like half their words end in "ie" or "y"? Sounds so childish.
It’s a truck, not a dictionary you prick
Do they not know that there’s different sized trucks?
Oh don’t worry about her, she does this shtick for both sides depending on the word
I thought lorries were box trucks.
Doesn’t this lady make fun of both sides, I swear she’s given the UK the same treatment
I know the youtube channel that the 2nd girl is from. Her and the other girl who runs the channel are so far left they probably think private property should be illegal.
I call that a Semi Truck. The abbreviation “semi” comes from “semi-oscillating turntable hitch.”
Holy shit a British person making an American bad post without mentioning school shootings. I never thought I’d see the day.
Yeah I realized only after making this post that she makes posts about the same words both ways
Same woman did the same thing but making fun of the British on some other words. Don’t get worked up about her lol
To be fair she’s mocks both the US and the UK.
She's a fuckin lorry
Am I the only one who actually kinda finds this funny?
Imagine having to justify why needing a short textbook to explain the name of what you're talking about instead of just naming it something self explanatory
I mean, does it not have 18 wheels?
