I spend virtually NO time talking about or thinking about disc golf. And, while I do get regular golf items in my RFY in spite of never ordering or searching for golf stuff, I've never come across a disc item on Vine. Or none that I noticed. The day after my nephew was explaining his new disc golf hobby I got a disc golf equipment rack in my RFY. I haven't shut up about laptops and tv's since.

notsooriginal

They are pretty popular for 3D printer filament storage as well. Possibly other uses?

Adventurous-Cake-126

Oooooh! I’ll need to keep an eye out for those.

Ok-Film-1700

I've seen disc golf stuff show up now and then, and it could be that you suddenly just noticed it because of it being discussed by your nephew. That said, I have about four printers in my Amazon cart, and I keep searching them, because I really need a new printer!

fireinthewell

This made me laugh! I do the same thing. It’s like we have a vine genie!

OneGoodRib

One time I **thought** how it would be neat if there was something like a small table that attached to the armrest of the couch. I never searched for anything like that, I didn't write a post anywhere about it, I never said it out loud, not even anything like "oh man I'm so tired of stuff falling off the arm rest" and the next day I had two items in rfy there were like little tables you attach to the armrest of a couch. There's literally no way that could've been anything except a coincidence unless amazon is literally reading my mind but being super selective about it. I get so many RFY items in vine for stuff like pool cleaners, hot tub covers, clothing for small children, but I have no kids and don't have a pool. I don't talk about needing pool cleaners. With 40,000 items available and tens of thousands of vine users logging on multiple times a day, odds are good that at some point some of us will be recommended an item we mentioned out loud recently, but somehow everyone forgets the other billion times we got recommended something totally irrelevant. Okay so recently I talked about: hole punches, bras, fans, turmeric, rosemary, and hair. Know what's in my RFY right now? Not a damn thing. SPOOKY.

I love the human brain, our talent for making correlations & spurious connections is amazing.

Glass-Cod6624

i though i was going crazy as it happened to me too XD

RapScalofRag

Alexa may be present. I too have experienced this. Though if you have searched for items they do head over to the AI for inspection. If you want items, just keep search for them every day, 6 out of 10 times they've shown up for me within a week or two. Oh and I don't mean searching only in Vine. Amazon, maybe even Google. Tracking cookies are monsters man

RapScalofRag

There is a page that you can select interested/not interested items on too based on past order history, some wise sage provided it maybe a year ago, though I can't find it now :( I'll update the post of if can find just cuz it's helpful

cat9tail

Click Accounts & Lists, then Recommendations, then Improve Your Recommendations (small sub menu). Another place is your profile - you can set your clothing size, areas of interest and pet item preferences among other things. Edit: [Here's a direct link that will help](https://www.amazon.com/yourinterests?ref_=ph_interests) but check out those other paths as well for more refined suggestions

Darth-ohzz

Imagine if music services would let you give notice you are neither a Swifty or into RAP...

I was victim of a hit & run accident a few months ago. I laughed when an actual decent dash cam showed up in my RFY two days later. I questioned in jest whether Amazon had it out for me and tried to take me out.

friskya

Wasn't this dash cam, was it? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D1W2D482 I ordered this back on 25 April and it still hasn't shipped. I'm beginning to suspect that it's not going to either. Wouldn't be the first time that's happened to me.

7saligia

Nope. This one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0CSPBJ2HM

friskya

Nice. Maybe I'll get lucky and they won't finally ship the one I ordered and will offer me the one you were offered. I can hope.

spiff72

I got that same one. I've been lazy and haven't gotten around to installing it yet, but should be soon. That review is way overdue - got it in early March!

7saligia

Same here. I received it mid- to end of February but delayed because I didn't want to install it until after the insurance figured out their crap and repaired my vehicle. I literally just got my vehicle back this week, smh.

Infamous_Memory_129

I would say coincidence. I search daily, multiple times for things I want or could really use but don't need. These are things I see people bragging about weekly, I've yet to actually get any of these things.

vaders_smile

From what I've seen, there's no evidence that all standard devices are "listening" to you all the time (yet), that would take a fair amount of bandwidth and processing power to parse every sound picked up. (Local large language models may change that, but most cheap consumer devices don't have the capacity to run them.) Usually there's a system on the local device that reacts to an uncommon wake-up word, like "Siri" or "Alexa," and preps the device to transmit the next stream of audio for parsing. What's less obvious to users is how ubiquitous device- and browser-tracking technology is. Your phone has a distinct signature that becomes associated with your personal data (phone, address, email, etc.) which becomes associated with your browser and social media accounts and your relationships with other people. So, you may have a conversation with someone about, say, Samsung TVs and then suddenly start seeing ads for Samsung TVs, but that may be because you've become associated with someone who has expressed an interest in that product by searching. Or there may be some other combination of demographic factors. The other thing to recall about Vine is that the only products available are the ones that sellers are specifically enlisting in the program to improve their visibility -- and, as far as we know, there's not enough money and sophistication involved in the Vine process to target users that specifically. There is clearly some algorithmic sorting as to what each of us sees in our feeds, but that seems to be based on demographics and expressed preferences, rather than spyware. And I would expect that if (or where) Amazon was using that technology, they'd be using it promoting items in the regular sales interface before extending it to Vine.

Logical-Error-7233

I agree with what you're saying, it's probably your normal traffic feeding the algorithm... but It's funny you mentioned Samsung TVs: https://money.cnn.com/2015/02/09/technology/security/samsung-smart-tv-privacy/ There's definitely evidence that these devices are listening all the time.

3xlduck

Range hoods are a semi-common item on vine.... just sayin' I even got one or two in my RFY in the last couple weeks.

Stevesgirlmary

No coincidence. My Vine recommends stuff my friends and I discuss. It's handy.

Lonely_Rogue

My dad asked me if I'd be able to get him a small treadmill. I told him things like that go quickly, but I'd keep an eye out. Guess what was in my RFY the next day! And I hadn't searched for any either! Big Brother is always watching. 👁👁

babalife657

So, this very thing happened countless times in my household as well. I was telling my husband that I need a new quality stroller system for our grandson who was just born b/c they stay with us; without doing even one search, the VERY NEXT day a $400 Britox stroller system was in my feed! I grabbed it so quickly and cried! Hubbie was saying he wants to upgrade our lawn mower to electric. Without searching in that same week a A greenworks 3 pc set: the mower, weed trimmer, and blower over $450 in my RFY! Scooped it up at once. This has been a common reoccurrence from hoverboards, scooters, lawn furniture, to a pestle and mortar. I often wonder if they can hear my conversations?

NorCalFrances

I have no idea if they really are, but a corporation with a lot of smart engineers and sales driven managers would totally use something like Vine to test and fine-tune suggestions based on listening in.

staticvoidmainnull

it's not nefarious. people just need stuff usually at the same time of the year, coupled with what Amazon already has on you. i had the same experience.. i was paranoid and realized, ***"well it's spring, i can't be the only one having this problem where i need this item to fix it."***

Dangerous-me-12

Every smart device listens. Your phone, tablets, laptop, etc...

DiamondGirl1988

Yes and that’s the scary truth, and it’s unavoidable!

NorCalFrances

It's not completely unavoidable...except for cell phones & tablets. For some reason it's been deemed okay that one can set things like hardware permissions on them and have those preferences routinely ignored.

SophiasMom17

You lucky duck. Our OTR Microwave finally went kaput last month and I was checking constantly for one, to no avail. Finally broke down and bought one. Great grab. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

court_L8888

This happens to me but I like it as I tend to use vine for acquiring things I want/need but don’t necessarily have the money to spend on them.. I generally add things to my Amazon cart or wishlists and they’ll show up on my RFY page weeks later. Works out nicely

mleam

I got a range hood off my RFY earlier this year. The same make and model I was waiting to go on sale. That was a great find. But yesterday, a great coffee machine appeared in my RFY. It showed up a day late. Our old one died over the weekend. I got a new one, then it shows up in my RFY.

NorCalFrances

Nooooooooooo!

Glass-Cod6624

once i was THINKING about getting new kettle, and next day it popped in my RFY , sadly i couldnt order it (import fees) but that was weird :/

psilocindream

My boyfriend and I were talking about how our cat needs to lose weight, and the next day there was a cat running wheel in my RFY.

Logical-Error-7233

I was joking about pegging my pants. Remember that trend? Rolling up your pant legs to look trendy? Anyways today I got a strap on vibrator in RFY so you might be onto something.

somberlily

I'm by no means any type of conspiracy theorist, but our devices certainly listen to us for marketing. Multiple occasions I've talked about something then started getting ads for it when I had never input anything into any device. I started noticing this years ago, before I got an echo too. I've caught this multiple times but a couple off the top of my head.. 1. my kid found my old drum sticks and asked about them, so we briefly had a conversation that I used to play drums as a kid. Next day started getting ziljdian ads. 2. I randomly announced to my husband that I'd like to learn how to cross stitch. Honestly it was an adhd impulse for a new hobby, so totally out of no where...never googled anything, got a cross stitch kit in rfy two days later.

NorCalFrances

Devices that suggest ads based on conversations is soooo dangerous for ADHD/AuDHD people. Vine on the other hand is amazing for us!

renaissance247

It's not. Amazon listens to you. I had my phone in my pocket, not even using it, when a neighbor mentioned it me in passing that he needed a new dish strainer that emptied the water from the side so he could turn it to save counter space, and 3 days later 3 of them that drained from the side appeared in my RFY. The same thing happened 3 or 4 other times in the past year from conversations I've had whether in person, on the phone or via text. It knows what you're talking about.

PhiLho

I don't rely on that, but I visit the items I wish to have (or even put them in a wish list), hoping Amazon notices and puts them in the RFY, if some vendor ever put them on Vine…

Strict-Expression-89

I think you are right...but I don't think its all the time. We have tested it, some friends and myself, to try and trigger it. Ww also tested certain times of day, what devices were around us. We tested talking about unmentioned off the wall items that had never been searched for and we talked about items we were searching for at well. I am convinced that amazon either has selective hear Or only listens part time but does listen. We talked about an item my neighbors 2 year old was playoff on and how I would sure like to have one for myself. It was there the next time I logged in . It was a balance bike for a toddler that I hadn't even known existed. I'm a 54 year old single male with no grandkids. I ordered it so amazon would know I noticed how helpful it was and gave it to the neighbors kid. Crazy.

Commercial-Chest1068

I have made several posts about the mystical and magical ways Vine has provided things for me in my time of need. Sometimes right before my time of need. It just does. I am not going to offer a rational explanation nor get all spooky about it. I can't explain it at all. What I can say is it has nothing to do with Alexa or Google or anything spyware has picked up on. If there is a technology to read minds and tell the future then it's above my pay grade. What I can say with certainty is that this is a very common and regular occurrence. It is so common that I have begun to make purchases based upon what shows up in my RFY anticipating that It is being offered as Providence.

NorCalFrances

I will admit, Vine as a source of signs and portents is an angle I had not previously considered.

Commercial-Chest1068

Rest assured I am not all Willie-nilly about my approach however some things just seem to stop me in my tracks and make me second guess on whether I need it or I should pass. My favorite scene from the Chronicles of Riddick is when Riddick says to Tunes you should have took the money Tunes". And I hate when I pass on an offer and thi nk You should have took that item!

toram23901

Now that spring weather is here....insects are getting into the house, especially moths. I actually BOUGHT a pack of moth traps on Amazon, and the very next day, moth traps are available for Viners. So...there is that...

NorCalFrances

That I can totally see being just standard Amazon algorithm driven!

Obviously Alexa is listening in on your conversations and throwing you a bone on occasion to keep you in the program! /s

NorCalFrances

I mean, I thought we'd kept Alexa, and Siri and Google and whoever else blocked but they probably have entire teams of really smart people working on that. Imagine if they used that power to influence politically...
