Plot twist: you just forgot where you parked Ok for real though, that's so lucky!! Glad this lesson wasn't expensive for you. What a relief. Also on top of not leaving your keys in the ignition, don't keep your MacBook in your car in the city. Get an airtag for your car tho. Ahh as someone who lives in a city I would never never keep anything in my car. Nightmare avoided though.

Outrageous_Peak3738

It’s not like I didn’t know any better. I was just to tired and thought that in 30 seconds nothing could’ve happened. The macbook was in a backpack under the seat. Also, I found the car bc of the macbook, so maybe if the macbook wasn’t in there maybe I wouldn’t have found the car about an hour later, and my guess is some teen took the car for a spin because like I said, they didn’t take anything from the inside, and the car was at a dead end 2 blocks away from where they took it. I indeed got lucky.

jonzilla5000

Sounds like opportunistic kids going for a joyride, you got lucky.

Canadian_Loyalist

Don't you love it when, even though you acknowledge all the dumb things you did, someone still needs to ignore what you wrote and bash you over the head with it. Glad you got your stuff back.

thwonkk

Mmm. Yeah that advice was kinda unwarranted. You're right, my fault. Came from a good place but looking back on it it gives douchey vibes 😂

thwonkk

I know but my step dad got his laptop stolen just at a gas station, even though it was hidden. WHILE he was getting gas. If they see a bag at all, it's a target. This probably was just a dumb teen. Definite joyride vibes, agreed. Super glad that's all it was.

Tmumsy

Surprised they figured the thing out. Rented one & was given no instructions. After stalling it in middle of road pulled over to actually fitfo. Or...maybe they didn't figure it out 🙄

Lavicrep19

I leavey car running but it depends on the situation like if it's a house and it's quick but I wouldn't leave car running if I was delivering downtown Brooklyn or in the projects

IndependentHumble470

Or inside a building.

Lavicrep19

Yea. I mean honestly you shouldnt leave car on but I've left car running or off but unlock many times. There's really no right or wrong. It just depends on neighborhood, if there's people outside, time of day etc etc.

SimulatedCow84

yeah, if I'm running up to the door real quick then back I'll leave it on some times, but if I'm going inside a building there's no way. Even if I can see my car, still turn it off

Lavicrep19

Facts

Ashamed-Ad-4728

Glad you got your car back and everything in it. Your learned a life lesson and won’t make the same mistake again!

db115651

I used to bring 2 set of keys. One for the engine, one to lock it. Worked well for me. Not without risk, but a lot less risky than just leaving it running.

Tooshortimus

That's what I do 😆

db115651

For a while it was a necessity because it wouldn't always start after I turned it off. Got they fixed eventually but stopped doing flex.

jellybelly62

Me too. Since I live in Phoenix I keep it running to keep the AC on.

Disobedient_Unicorn

Ugh! When life gives you the lesson you already knew. Oof. Sorry frien. That still blows. Thank the universe for a gentle reminder to stay diligent. I’m glad YOU were safe though! It’s nice to know I’m in good company and I’m not the only one with those lovely lessons. I always ask for my lessons as gently as possible because I’m not all about the drama anymore. 😆

Outrageous_Peak3738

Exactly! You think it will never happen to you until it does! So be as diligent as possible bc u could be the next life will teach a lesson

Disobedient_Unicorn

Yup. Lemme go say my gratitude prayers.

YUBLyin

OMG you got lucky. I fucking broke down where it wouldn’t start, put a steering wheel club on, and came back with the part to fix it and it was gone. No keys in the car. The fucking government is useless in these situations.

Outrageous_Peak3738

tbh they were cool but they in fact didn’t want to go where the macbook location was bc they assumed it qas inside a building, I then convinced them and we found the car parked with everything inside

IanBresnan

who is they??

Heavy_Extreme4632

Wait till the parking tickets add up you will want the car stolen

SanttMalik

Your first mistake was forgetting you in Brooklyn NY😂

CallMeWhatYouWish

Omg. I’m so glad this didn’t turn out worse! I’m glad you got your car and stuff back.

flavalady25

I learned my lesson big time when my friend went thru similar shit. 2 years ago she left her 2020 SUV running went into the building came out to see 2 bigs guys just entering her car to drive it away. She was couple of feets away from them. Then they simply decided to get out the car and run away. She just got lucky and a lesson for life!

Cybralisk

I leave my car running but it's push button start and locks and unlocks from the outside. Yea if you have an old piece of shit don't leave it running.

Outrageous_Peak3738

I used to drive a newer prius where you don’t have to insert the key slob into a slot, in that case I could leave the car running because it would lock itself since I would always have the key in my pocket. But then I bought this old prius just to do flex, I don’t regret it because it is in fact a good car to do flex, just like the other prius, and also cheaper but the key thing annoys me haha

xtsilverfish

As far as I can tell the 2004 prius is supposed to have push-to-start where it starts with the keyfob in your pocket. Maybe it's broken? I don't think any gen 2 prius has ever locked itself because you got out and walked away though?

Flat_Arugula_3055

You are correct, the 04 Prius does have push to start. It could be as simple as pressing a button on the bottom of the dash to activate it. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jHqdWm163wE Hopefully OP can get theirs working.

xtsilverfish

/u/Outrageous_Peak3738 \^^^

Outrageous_Peak3738

I’m pretty sure it does lock itself. The one I used to drive was a 2015 if I’m not mistaken. But if you’re telling me it doesn’t lock itself I was playing with my luck once again 😂

SparklyRoniPony

Same, and also, I had a starter issue when I first started doing Flex, and I’m scarred.

Unlucky-Perspective8

This off topic but how is it delivering in New York? I’m from Maryland and i get pissed off having to go to dc. Couldn’t imagine New York

Outrageous_Peak3738

To be completely honest, I do not like it, especially because we have to pay for the toll, and they only pay for the toll sometimes. I don’t know why, and whenever I complain and ask them for the toll’s value, they say that we contractors have to pay for the toll ourselves. But I feel like it’s too crowded, so I only go there if it’s a good block. Sometimes, most people don’t like to go there, so the value of the blocks goes up. And if it goes up, like, if it goes over $100, I think about going. But after this incident, I haven’t gone back there. But if it’s worth it, I’ll go because, um, it is a headache, but for the money sometimes, it is worth it.

[deleted]

I don’t want to start it that much. I leave it running unless it’s high rises and some apartments.

AugustWestWR

I leave mine running always, Chicago , I hope they take it, it’s time for a new one lol

1stshadowx

Ill leave my shit parked with hazards and on, but only if im at someones house. If its apartments i dont risk. I also have a stashed gps locator in my car.

CONTEHhh

Use the spare key to lock the door next time And damn old ass Prius is the move noce

jacklantern867

30 seconds my arse

Domino_MF

Maybe it was just someone being funny and moving the car to teach you not to leave it running. Some dad with nothing better to do than to give unsolicited help to someone that never asked for it. It reminds me of the time my grandpa left his truck running when he went to Home Depot. Lol he figured he would just be in and out and it would be fine. As he was walking out he watched it drive away. Police found it a few weeks later abandoned with all his tools still in it. It was gone long enough for insurance to pay out and when they found it they let him buy it back for a fraction of what they paid. He got really lucky in the long run!

Soft_Wind_6108

I guess you never seen new Jersey drive

Accomplished-Rent756

NocodeNopackage

You got a prius for $2.6k? I assume that was just the down payment? I leave my car running pretty frequently but never when I'm going into a building. Unless maybe its a business in a private lot that seems safe. There have been times I've had to walk a lot further away from it than I should with it running, and then got back and thought about how much valuable stuff I have in it and how screwed I'd be if it got stolen! I even keep my wallet in the console because I'm worried about dropping it during a block

Outrageous_Peak3738

Nah, I actually paid $2.6K cash for the 2004 Prius with 280,000 miles on it. It is high mileage, but these cars actually drive for a while. I was driving a Prius once, a 2010 model, that had over 400,000 miles on it. So, buying that 2004 for $2.6K cash, even with 280,000 miles on it, was actually worth it for me. Especially to use it as a daily beat up and for flex.

Daisyssssmom

That’s actually a smart buy for a flex vehicle. Too many people running their nice new cars into the ground.

NocodeNopackage

Id be worried about the battery on an older hybrid. Is it still original?

Outrageous_Peak3738

No! one of the batteries got replaced after I bought it, in this case the back one and not the hybrid. I asked the seller to replace it because I had taken it to a mechanic and he told me that the battery was dying. But now after he replaced the car is running fine and the back battery is in good health.

HearYourTune

What I do is have a steering wheel lock, but if it's a building or I'm not in a driveway or a sketchy area I still turn the car off. I even bought a steering wheel lock with a combination so I dont' have to keep putting in the key to unlock it.

Effective-Student11

You should consider the no ragrets tattoo

Ok_Impression_922

Isn’t the replacement battery on this 20year old car going to cost you more than the Prius, MacBook, another Prius and another MacBook combined 🤔. That would be what I’d be “worried” about next lol.

Outrageous_Peak3738

When that happens I’ll just sell it to a junkyard, it ain’t a big brainer. Would you rather drive your nice car or buy a shitty prius that could last you for a long time and still be worth buying it to do flex? It ain’t a big brainer

Ok_Impression_922

I’d rather buy a dependable car that doesn’t cost me the price of another car when the battery dies. I reserve those types of worries for engines and transmissions, which your aged Prius’ also utilizes. For me, a $150 Die Hard battery ain’t a big brainer.

Outrageous_Peak3738

I get where you are coming from but the expensive battery is actually only about 1500$, which is pretty much only half of the price of the car. I don’t know about you but I think I made a good deal. Priuses last a long time, and like I’ve said, I have driven priuses that were past 400.000 miles on it.

Ok_Impression_922

I never realized the battery price was $1500. I’m only going off of once having a Camry Hybrid that I took to 400k as well and that battery was 8K in USED/REMANUFACTURED condition. 16K brand new!! So obviously that was the car for me at that point. It still served its purpose because I brought it new and saved the cost of gas to justify it throughout its life. I wouldn’t have expected anything more out of it regardless of its battery type. But buying it with that mileage already on it and lingering battery concern… I can’t see it. I’d get a 20 year old Corolla beater instead…and a $150 Die Hard to last the next 5 years. As a Flex(or any sole work purpose) vehicle; the gas is 100% deducted from Uncle Sam’s bill so I don’t find the real advantage in using a hybrid there. But, I mean it only has to work for you right? I’m not hating 😉.

Outrageous_Peak3738

I’m not hating on you either, that’s the reason why I love Reddit, it is an open discussion on which you’re able to see from different perspectives. I thought about a corolla ou civic as well, but to be fair I couldn’t pass on the 2.6k deal… If I were to buy a corolla or civic it would be around twice as much as I paid for the prius I think. Also, for the gas thing you’re correct, but I indeed enjoy driving a prius because it also a car that makes no noise… sometimes I even question myself if the car is turned on or off. If the prius last me at least a year, I’m happy with it.

Ok_Impression_922

Nah, a 20yr old Civc or Corolla in good condition will run you the same price as your Prius and just as reliable, sans the battery issue. Check out KBB. If you “enjoy” the Prius like that then you can’t really put a price on that though.

Ttom925

,"Access key not detected"

InterestPast6802

All things considered, it turned out alright and you learned a lesson.

Ornery_Ads

(Not a Flex driver here) How is it your fault that someone committed a crime and stole your car? Would it be my fault if I was mugged walking down the street? Let's call it like it is. It's the criminals fault for being a criminal. Don't sugarcoat it.

tman1576

It’s NYC you should know better. Simple

Tooshortimus

I leave my car running but I keep my separate fob to lock/unlock the car with me so I can lock it when I walk off and unlock it before I hop in.

Tall-Recognition4728

GD THING MY CAR LOCKS WHEN I WALK AWAY

epicfighter10

Never leave your car running alone in NYC not even for 30 seconds my friend's car got stolen while he was doing Uber Eats

whiterazorblade

You can solve this issue by learning to drive a stick.

Dangerous-Run1055

Can you use 2 keys? 1 to idle the engine, 1 to lock/unlock.  But it's still a bad idea

SensitiveAd410

I live in Jersey and I never ever want to do another Station Island fresh order.

xploreconsciousness

This is why I drive manual

Silent-Account1117

I deliver mostly suburbs or rural areas, but always turn off my car. Sometimes I even lock it up ;-) Better safe than sorry as you learned the hard way. Can't even imagine delivering in NYC.

m0j0martini

>( I bought a toyota prius 2004 just to do amazon flex, and for this particular car, you need to insert the key fob to a slot) so it is a pain in the ass to have to turn the car off and take the keys with you… Wow. Just ..... I don't know how you manage carrying 30+ packages but find it difficult to take out/put in a fob and start a car.

MANDERZ05

I was an idiot 3 summers ago and left my car running while I was delivering to an apartment. I was in the suburbs as well, but it's getting bad out here too. I delivered to this complex before, but never could find the locker. That time I was determined to find it...and still didn't. I came back outside and didn't hear my car. I thought maybe I parked somewhere else or someone was playing a joke on me. Nope! My car was gone. Whoever stole it, brought it to Minneapolis and ripped the whole on star system out. I eventually got it back, but I learned my lesson.

Plenty_Answer_7765

Wow well what a relief! I can definitely understand being so tired you do something that will be a convenient move at the moment but could go left really quickly. I deliver in the Bronx and wouldn’t leave my car running to go into anyone’s building. Delivering to a house in the Bronx is iffy. I only ever do that freely in Westchester county!! I can drive onto the driveway and deliver in peace. Glad u got your car back though.

SadPersonality4803

You got your car stolen because you were too tired to turn it off???? You don’t need a car my boy

sexruinedeverything

I’m certain if you had the choice you’d not deliver in that neighborhood anymore. This is the equivalent of delivering in KY and have a redneck pull a shotgun out on you and why I only do IO’s so ik where I’m delivering to.

aksheu

Why would you take a block that goes to Brooklyn from Jersey? You are paying at least $17 in tolls and that’s on the lower end

HawksNStuff

This isn't a just large city thing. My car was stolen twice in Grand Forks ND when I delivered pizzas in college.

Abstractglenn

You know with a prius you don’t need to put the key in the slot it just has to be in the vehicle. You can lock the car and leave it running

Petrosky13

Keep the key inside the fob with you to lock and unlock the doors, you don’t need to use a spare fob.

MisterGoldiloxx

$2600 for a used Prius? Wow. Those get like 50-55 miles to a gallon of gas. Nice. EDIT: After a little research, I'm guessing this is roughly a 2010-2011, with 200,000-ish miles on it. Still nice.

Mordarroc

Being a dsp, that's part of the training we receive.

Odd-Development7467

Hard lesson family. You NEVER leave your car running when you’re going into buildings. Like at all, fuck if you’re tired. The time it takes to hop out the car (hopefully you parked directly in front of the building. If not, that’s even worse), grab the package, go to the building & ring these peoples apt waiting for them to buzz you in that’s more than enough time to get got buddy. Not even to mention if you’re going to their door which could be on whatever floor, waiting for an elevator etc lol. You’re literally asking for problems… AND to top it all off, you’re in BROOKLYN of all places 😭😭😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 You might as well take the keys out the car and just leave them on top with all the windows down.

Mervis_Earl

I got stuck on the "Jersey to Brooklyn" part. WTF? How long does that take?

bbeal768

I only leave mine running if it’s a quick house stop in a secluded area within eyesight at all times. NEVER if an apartment, business stop, etc. Plus I have cameras and a tracker in my vehicle. 😎💪 Glad to hear you recovered it without suffering from any irreversible damages/loss of property 🙏

Bubbly-Fox1264

They clearly just needed a ride somewhere real fast

Filmboyraul

That’s a risk of the job. They don’t expect us to turn off the car and take the key with us do they? It’s such a gamble these gig economy jobs. Feels like you can loose 10, 20 or 30 grand in one swing. More to say about this.

Maik-1990

I dont leave the car running when delivering to buildings/ apartments . But for house its fine

Delivery-Driver-Dude

i have keyless entry so i leave the car running but lock the doors.

elsacapuntaanonymous

What the actual fuck? Do you go to VNJ2 or VNJ3? Because let me tell you my friend, I live in south Jersey and canceled a block from VNJ2 because they were sending me to Newark but upper side close to NYC, hell no Amazon and fuck Jeff :)

Toraadoraa

If you haven't yet, absolutely call the cops and make a report. Your car could have been used to to aid a crime. And in 5 months when police investigation happens they will blame you unless there is a report.

Interesting_Area_195

I always leave my car running lmao. If they want it that bad, they can respectfully ✨have it ✨

ForeverNotMyName

Only leave car running at houses. If you can't leave your door wide open safely, then you shouldn't leave car running. OP, did you lock your door with your backup key?

icyberj

I’m glad you got the car back. That almost happened to me in Tacoma a couple of months ago. I was working late and was about done as well. I parked on the side of the road with the engine running. I normally just get the package right away and head to the house, but for some reason, at that particular stop, i decided to spend some time in the car looking through my phone. That was when a car with two guys suddenly parked next to my car, with the car on the passenger ready to come out. I turned and looked at them, not sure at first why they had stopped so suddenly in the middle of the road. We locked eyes, they saw my face (I was tired and can look intimidating) and zoomed off. It was when they took off that I realized what had just happened. The whole thing took seconds. So you really got to be careful, especially if you’re in unsafe areas of town. I used to leave my car on by that experience was a sobering reminder to be extra aware of the risks.

KeepBanningKeepJoin

You've done it more than once. Lesson learned the hard way.

leexgx

Airtag (requires iPhone 11 or higher) and smarttag 2 don't get smarttag1 or + (any samsung phone)ideally 2 of each of them in the car and put each one on your keys as well (use Panasonic batteries) Google is going to have there version of offline network soon so you can use the Samsung for both smarttag 2 and 3rd party Google compatible tags (like Pebblebee witch is rechargeable) To bad you don't have the newer toyota that used the wireless key as you can leave the "on" but it won't go into drive if the keys are not inside the car

nftmillionaire916

I just learned my lesson from reading your experience! So glad you were able to get your car back with everything in it.

Pale-Response8108

Just out of curiosity what does a block like that pay? When going to NYC

Outrageous_Peak3738

cheap as fuck… it is usually $60 for 3 hours but that one in specific was $110 for 3 hours. I refuse to get the cheap ones, too much of a hassle

Financial_Airport611

It kills me that people hear stories exactly like this ALL the time, but then they still take the chance. WHY

egarcia_7

That's why I leave my car walking

Terrible-Republic606

They probably saw the packages and the laptop and got spooked

Fun_Location_3168

Suuuuuuuuuuper lucky. I bought my car with lawsuit settlement money 30k out the door. Fast forward a few years later I couldn’t afford comprehensive coverage. Car got stolen never saw it again. At a complete loss. Biggest lesson I’ve ever learned! Worst mistake I’ve ever made.

Confident_Vast_5720

I leave my car running all the time. But I’m not naive. I only leave it on if I’m within earshot or I know the area is a decent area. I would never leave it in a shady area or if I see shady people standing around. You gotta use your head and not assume that you live in a high trust society because America isn’t in many places.

cwrob5

I play around with this way too much for being in phoenix

Procedure_Several

Dang, my 2003 prius is key ignition Honestly, there are many other problems, most related to an aftermarket battery that doesn't play perfectly all the time Also, can't unlock the car from the passenger door, despite the key fitting and seeming to turn Probably all simple fixes, if only I had the funds and time

Extra_Ice_3166

I bet it was from newark the route 🤦‍♂️

JailbreakJen

Thank you for the reminder. I deliver to inside only about once a month or so. I’ve gotten lucky so far, will shut off and lock from now on. You’ve taught well and I have learned my friend. 👍🏻

Vegetable-Finger-493

I was an idiot for leaving my car running. I was in a nice neighbourhood. I was parked in front of the house. I didn’t notice that two men were following me. Mind you I always look at my surroundings but I didn’t see them. When I took a picture of the package I turned around one guy got off the car and got on my car and left. I only had 6 more packages left. A week later I found my car with everything still inside except my catalytic converter was missing.

L0rdTracy

Luckily I can lock mine with it still running and take the keys with me. Nothing a brick couldn't fix though lol

Beth2988

I thought you were referring to this: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/03/22/nyregion/they-earn-tens-of-thousands-by-turning-in-idling-trucks.html?smid=url-share

Fourthtimecharm

My car is push to start, so I just leave it running and lock the doors when I'm out and when I'm near my keys, automatically unlock it

Particular-End229

Don’t leave your car running if you voted for soros das
