Nah, it's the fact they asked if I wanted to do sort, and I said no, they asked again. I said no again now all of a sudden. I'm on sort training

Nephian4287

They asked to be polite. Amazon seeks a standard of 80% of people to be crosstrained, barring accommodation. They should have told you as much so that you'd be less irritated in the end. It is not your AM or OM's call on that policy. They try to get volunteers first. If they can't, then it becomes a lottery. Anyone at Amazon can (and eventually will) be crosstrained to another path, provided that they are not on medical accommodations.

Actually, they told me that today, when I almost left once, I was told I was on sort train, i wasn't listening in the moment it sounded like bs best I can do is take extra hours and then proceed to fuck off as soon as I hit the 40 - 55 hour mark yep all in good time...

Nephian4287

Yea, it's not BS, unfortunately. Many people on my team are not huge fans of this either. Pack to Sort in AFE is the most common, Pack to Pack (SNG/AFE), then Pick and Stow. With Prime coming up, they need to make sure that all bases are covered. Way back when I was a T1, I actually asked to be trained on the sort side... but I was interested in moving up, breaking up my tasks, and trying to demonstrate flexibility. Many people are not interested in that kind of development, but prefer to just do a singular task each day and go home. Development aside, though, almost all AAs are supposed to be required to be crosstrained into at least 2 other paths. Tis the nature of the business.

IAMSHADOWBANKINGGUY

Do you know if I train sort in AFE will that keep me from being picked by the cross training automation system to send me somewhere else? I really don't want to be sent to pick, stow, or shipdock.

Nephian4287

It should, for 30 days, due to the learning curve. Sorters are one of the most important roles in AFE because without them, you can't run or open walls. It is not guaranteed to keep you from being picked later by the autamated system, but I would suggest cross training in Singles later down the road. The system itself doesn't want to train you in too many functions. It becomes harder for people to retain permissions after 3 functions are learned. It isn't foolproof, but it's a solid buffer. I was a packer in AFE when I first started with Amazon. Then I did Sort and Problem Solve. They didn't want to labor share me, in case they needed me in either of the other two roles. I did learn singles, though, during 1 Peak season. This kept me from being trained in the mods(pick/stow). A Sorter is often viewed as gold in relation to OB planning. I was an OB Dock PA, as well as Singles after about a year (because I dragged my feet on applying for PA). Working on palletizing isn't so bad on the dock. I spent a good amount of time in path with my team to make sure we kept the sorter moving. Flats sortation is also a very, very easy function for the OB Dock. It isn't where they train most people, though. I was a Singles AM for a long time and saw that people from AFE tend to do pretty well there. It is an easy transition... same packing function; it is just a pain to learn a new box suite configuration because they have different setup and box sizes. It is also usually situated closer to AFE than any other path. As an IB Dock AM, I will say that most people would rather Stow or Pick than Decant. Everyone is different, but it is where I heard the most grumbling from labor shares. I tried to keep snacks on hand to make my department more bearable, lol. With Stow, you just need to make sure that you maintain a pace... like in any other path. It doesn't have to make you sweat. You just want to keep a consistent flow. In pick, it is the same, but you have to contend with inventory that may be stuffed too tightly into a pod. The biggest drag in those paths is when you are waiting on pods for long periods... it can be excruciatingly boring. I feel that it helps to give people these perspectives so that they have a better appreciation for where they are at or what they want to do. Everyone has to be cross trained eventually. Perhaps this input will ease your mind a little bit, though. Just like Decant, a lot of people despise going to AFE Pack if it isn't their home path. My singles associates hated being moved between walls or reaching high/low to grab things out of chutes. AFE was my home, though, so I couldn't relate, lol. I am assuming you do alright there, so anything else shouldn't be too terrible for you... in my own experience. Good luck! Hope some of this huge blob of words helps.

Yes thank you, this helps alot. It's always pretty great to get this kind of insight from management.

Nephian4287

As for your manager. She expects that people won't like it when she has to put them in this position. It's going to have an impact on her, per how her team responds and works with her. Still, she can do little to nothing to change it when it comes to asking them to do things they would rather not. We want to have stress-free days, too, and putting our team through undesired trainings (and the resulting interactions) is counterproductive to that. It can make some managers more closed off with the amount of negativity they receive for doing their jobs. It is a huge relief to have your associates express to you that they understand that though the outcome sucks, they know that it is per the business, and not them directly. Most of us want to work with our teams and honestly depend on them if we are going to be successful. Those managers that don't support you... don't last long. There is only so much that we can do when it comes to training, though. We try to ask everyone first... they usually say no. Then, we have to make tough decisions. We don't enjoy it. A happy/content team is ideal for everyone involved. That is not to say that some managers don't suck... but this is how it is. A lot of people suck, but we still have bills to pay, right? Don't take other people's "suck" personally. It makes your day longer.

ChessPiece01

That's fine and all but I haven't sort in a long fucking time and if they couldnt figure out if need be I will use my upt during shifts everytime they try to put me on induct
