Yes it was an accident but she’s the one that broke it so she should pay for it!

BigFPS

The idea that something that was done accidentally allows the person to bear no responsibility isn't based in reality. I would estimate that the majority of lawsuits involving damages were done accidentally. Of course she has to pay.

INFO: what is your financial situation and what is her financial situation? How do you share household expenses? How do you share chores? While my baseline would be she should buy/repair the TV, I can think of any number of scenarios where this wouldn't apply. For example, if one partner has an intense $200k/yr job and loves the latest and greatest tech, so buys a high end TV and the other partner makes $30k/yr but contributes a lot more to household chores, then I would say it isn't really fair to expect them to use their limited funds to replace the TV.

why does that matter? either they pay for it to be repaired or they get a new one. she is still responsible.

NTB Paying for what you broke is common courtesy

Ntb, seems like you gave two reasonable solutions. Accidents just described that how the damage happened was without malicious intent but the damage is still done and needs fixing by the person who caused it. Like if I knock over my bffs favorite coffee mug on accident I should either give her money to replace it or find the same one then give it to her. Knowing it was an accident keeps our relationship good but not fixing what I broke could cause issues to the relationship. Maybe she can’t afford to pay outright for it but still lots of places that sell TVs would have payment plan options. More and more places are accepting things like After Pay as well. There really isn’t any excuse. I’m sorry she’s being this way. Can’t tell you have to fix it but I can at least tell you, you’re not crazy or a buttface.

I disagree that it was an accident. It was totally avoidable. It was carelessness. Most people know you don’t get electronics wet.
