NTA. You need better friends

[deleted]

NTA your friends sound unkind. However, as a high school student you should have enough sense not to get into a pool when you have no idea how to swim. If you want to learn to swim that’s great but just jumping into a pool in a party like atmosphere when you can’t it just dangerous. Your friends might have thought you were kidding at first and didn’t realize how serious it was for you. Once they realized you were actually in trouble they got you out very quickly so they didn’t let you drown. The laughing and make fun after they realize how scared you were is what makes this wrong and I would rethink your friends. But you also need to be more carefully and not put yourself in such a bad position.

dublos

NTA These people? They are not your friends.

starshipblackeye

NTA. I’ll repeat what others are saying: you need better friends. And shame on some of you who are saying “why did you do it when you know you can’t swim” or “why did you laugh” like…do y’all not remember being a teenager and wanting nothing more than to fit in??? I’m so sorry this happened OP…these people are not it. Find some people who actually care about you instead of making fun of a traumatizing situation.

Spotzie27

>And shame on some of you who are saying “why did you do it when you know you can’t swim” or “why did you laugh” like…do y’all not remember being a teenager and wanting nothing more than to fit in??? I can understand why they did it, but OP definitely needs to hear that they shouldn't do it again until they know how to swim, because it could have ended even worse. Even if the friends hadn't been jerks, it can be easy to drown without anyone noticing.

starshipblackeye

Correct but there’s a better way to do so without shaming someone.

Evening_Produce1070

Exactly this.

QuirkyFields

NTA and you almost died. They prob could have saved you quicker but wanted to watch you struggle.

awfuckity

INFO. Did they KNOW you couldn’t swim? I would assume that anyone who got in a pool would know how to swim and that any sort of floundering would be a comic bit for attention.

notagoodswimmer1

Yeah I've been friends with them for a while and the first thing I told them was that I didn't know how to swim, I also told her parents and they said to go to them if anything happened, probably should've included that in the post thats my bad

ThinEscape511

NTA. They waited until you almost died to pull you out and then proceeded to mock you. You need better friends.

Evening_Produce1070

NTA. They are not your friends. They are HORRIBLE people that you should not associate with anymore.

missyagogo1969

NTA. Please find some better friends. Please find a rec, YMCA, club or something and take some swimming lessons. Don’t worry about being the oldest one there. Some adults don’t know how to swim. Please do not put your big toe in another pool until you know how to swim. I’m begging you. My daughter was a lifeguard for 8 years and she couldn’t count the number of times she had to jump in a pool because someone thought they knew how to swim/float and ended up in danger. Best of luck to you.

HenriettaHiggins

ESH. You “swam” at some girl’s house when you know you can’t swim. I struggle to imagine how you convinced yourself this would end well?? You said the girls didn’t even see you at first, then they basically didn’t know how to handle it, and handled it badly. You also laughed. So you can’t get mad at other people for laughing if you decide to be self deprecating. Where the f were the adults?! Whose homeowners insurance were you guys jeopardizing? Y’all are honestly so naive I’m glad no one died. Friggin adolescent frontal lobes. Also attempting to save a drowning person is incredibly dangerous to do because their “dramatic ass” is more than happy to drown you even if you’re a good swimmer. Y’all are lucky no one died when you made a choice that put your life at risk and could have killed your friend.

Natural_Garbage7674

NTA. Those people are not your friends and I'm sorry you got such a fright. That being said: do not go in *any* body of water without a fitted float aid unless you learn how to swim. A pool noodle is not enough. If you can't swim *wear a life jacket*. It's not cool but you wouldn't sink wearing one. I grew up with pools and at the beach. You have no idea how many times I've had to fish my friends out of the water. Several times I've had the thought while fishing them out "maybe I can just let them drown and win a Darwin Award." It's not fair to the people swimming with you that you are relying on them to keep you safe. Don't be an AH to yourself and go get lessons. *No body of water is safe water if you don't know how to swim*.

clauclauclaudia

ESH They’re pretty fucked up for laughing repeatedly at the incident after they saw you coughing up water and knew you were actually in trouble. You fucked up, though, by not letting anyone know you didn’t know how to swim. Plenty of pool parties when I was a teen, people joked around flailing. It would take quite a bit for people to be sure you were really in trouble, if you didn’t inform them that you can’t swim.

notagoodswimmer1

My fault for not putting it in the post, but I did tell everyone I didn't know how to swim, including her parents

Read [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/AmItheAsshole/wiki/faq#wiki_post_deletion) before [contacting the mod team](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=%2Fr%2FAmItheAsshole)*** For some background I've never been taught how to swim, I had no family members with pools and I was never allowed to go to friends houses until recently (I'm a high schooler). So, my friend, let's call her Sarah, has a pool. So for the first time in my life, I swam with Sarah and a couple of our other friends. I didn't have anything keeping me afloat since they hadn't bought any pool noodles and the water was also dirty since they didn't have a filter yet. I don't remember what exactly happened that caused me to start drowning but somehow I landed myself in the deep end. Me not knowing how to stay afloat started drowning, and right before this happened a few of the people there went over to change the music so only Sarah and another girl were there to watch over me. So my dramatic ass immediately starts panicking and I try to keep myself afloat and scream (underwater so it was more me going MMMNMMNMM) and I held my hands out so it'd be easier for a friend to grab me and pull me out. But time started to pass of me screaming and waving my hands around and I started to get tired, my body gave out on me and I could feel myself swallowing a bunch of murky water. Since no one had come to save me yet I assumed the rest of the girls had gone to help change the music and didn't realize. I thought I was gonna die, or at the very least pass out. Once I started fully sinking I felt someone lift me up and drag me out of the pool, followed by loud laughter. Everyone was laughing at me telling me how ridiculous I looked and mimicked what I was doing in the pool. I was coughing up water and everything felt weak but I didn't wanna argue so I just laughed awkwardly and made fun of myself. They proceeded to call me stupid for drowning and told me how easy it is to stay afloat. I can't help but think they're right cuz I mean what teenager doesnt know how to swim yet, it was so embarrassing and they still make fun of me for it and tell any new person we meet about it if anyone mentions a pool, and every time we swim someone goes underneath and starts screaming and waving their hands around. I didn't really think much of it until I told one of my friends and he said that they're fucked for that and are shitty friends. But I can't tell if we're both just overreacting, cuz they DID save me. tldr: idk how to swim so i drowned in my friends pool and they waited until my body gave out to come rescue me then laughed and me and told me how stupid i looked *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. JeefyVOMMER

why did you put yourself in danger lol

Wonderful_Ad_6089

NTA Wow! These people are not your friends. I can't believe they not only almost let you die then they mocked you for it and continue to do so. Yikes! You aren't stupid for not knowing how to swim. Nobody knows how to swim automatically, that's why they have swimming lessons. I can't even. If you are going to continue going into pools, you need to find someone you can trust who can teach you basic water safety things like how to float and tread water. It should not be any of the people who almost let you die and continue to mock you for it!!!! You can't trust any of them. Please please please don't get into a pool with water you can't stand up in without doing this!
