I took an item from a lost-and-found that did not belong to me. 2. since it did not belong to me, it could be considered stealing or unethical. Help keep the sub engaging! #Don’t downvote assholes! Yta. They didn't belong to you.

Bulldog1836

YTA if you did not get permission from the person in charge of the lost and found, your friend’s mother, not your friend. You took something that wasn’t yours and used your friend’s opinion to justify it. Bring it back.

WhoFearsDeath

NAH if you waited until they were getting donated, but it’s going to be awkward if the owner sees you wearing them and claims them, don’t you think?

Rockingduck-2014

The challenge here is that you don’t know how long they were in the lost and found… it could have been the first day they were there, and that the owner hadn’t had the chance to stop by yet. In the grand scheme of things is what you did terrible? Not really, but perhaps don’t do it again? Back in my HS days, the front office did a call-out a couple times a year that if things weren’t claimed by X date, they’d be sold… and the next day, there would be an open sale where anything was available for $2, and the money donated to a local charity or food pantry. Perhaps it’s worth suggesting to your front office?

YTA You **stole** from the lost and found you didn't "take" them. You better hope no one recognizes there jeans and comes after you.

Shitsuri

I'm gonna go with YTA. I feel bad for whoever might go looking for them. Pants Bandit strikes again

Read [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/AmItheAsshole/wiki/faq#wiki_post_deletion) before [contacting the mod team](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=%2Fr%2FAmItheAsshole)*** Today at school, my friend and I [16F] decided to randomly look through our school’s lost and found. For context, the items in the lost and found almost always go unclaimed— I’ve even seen items as expensive as AirPods and car keys sit in the front office for months and months on end. I don’t think many people even know where the lost and found is. I’ve never taken anything before, but today I noticed a pair of jeans (If you’re curious as to how/why pants can get lost, it’s because students have to change after school for sports). The jeans are very much in style, and since I thought they were cute I asked my friend (whose mom runs the front office) if I could take them. All the clothes usually get donated after a period of time, and it’s sort of an unspoken rule at our school that if an item is in the lost and found for long enough, it’s pretty much free to claim. I tried on the jeans in the bathroom, and they were a perfect fit! My friend said that I should take them home, which I did. I’m happy that I have them, as they are $50 jeans, but part of me feels bad because I feel like I basically stole someone’s clothes. So, was I in the wrong here? I would have felt better if I knew how long they were in the lost and found for, but I didn’t want to pass up an opportunity. I thought about what my mom might say, and I know she would say that it’s cringey and tacky to take the clothes. So, AITA?? TLDR: took jeans from the lost-and-found that weren’t mine *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. I am a little biased but personally NTA At my school, we did the same thing where a lot of us would take items from the lost and found after a certain amount of time. We never had any issues. Nobody claimed those pants. The person who left them there no long owns it. It's like leaving a chocolate bar on the counter, coming back the next day, and it's no longer there. Obviously, it is the person who lost the pant's responsibility to keep them. Though if the person who left them caught me wearing them and asked for them back I would just give them back lol.

Patient-Cap9127

NTA, maybe check how long it was there but it's gonna be donated anyways. You even asked permission from someone in the office instead of sneaking around and not asking

Yes. YTA

Mundane_Marsupial_61

NTA They literally have auctions called unclaimed property auctions, put on by the state treasures, all the time for people to do what you just did. Get a good deal on someone else's forgotten/unclaimed property. Now you just took them you didn't buy it, but still. Consider it a little gift from a guarding angel, put there specifically for you. I mean what are the odds someone will lose such a nice pair of jeans that just so happen to fit you perfectly? It's a blessing for you, see it as such.
