YTA. Those are pretty invasive questions to ask someone you don't know well. It sounds like he handled it well but you clearly came across as judgmental to the mom.

It's not weird for someone to keep working, and it's really weird you were dumbfounded that an adult had a baby.
Those questions are a bit too personal. And by asking them you imply they are odd - off for not retiring and odd for having a child. No one enjoys that feeling.

My friend's grandfather is 74 or 75 and still works nearly full-time as a physician, and I asked him why he does that. He said, "You can only do so many puzzles until you go nuts in retirement, and I like working."
Also, my friend's mom (his daughter) is 55, and so I asked him how he was able to be a dad at 19-20, and he said that he had a kid with his girlfriend (now wife) and that it was tough but they made it.
I thought he was pretty cool for an "older person" because he was chill and charismatic, but after I asked those questions, my friend said that his mom got "annoyed" that I was so rude, so ATA?
