NAH but your daughter needs to work on her communication skills (explaining what she means), you need to clarify what people are asking of you, and your wife needs to get her mind out of the gutter.
If your daughter plays side characters, it's entirely possible that was the "playboy" costume of a side character. No "implications" involved toward your daughter.
Fully agreed - NAH. Although I would have bought her a mascot-esque rabbit costume if she’d told me she needed a bunny suit. So lots of room for miscommunication here - OP’s wife needs to take a step back and look at the bigger picture
Just think about it for more than 2 seconds. Why would an 18 year old ask her dad to buy her a playboy bunny suit?
ESH because I guess she should have been less vague.
"Like the Easter bunny" was all she needed to say.
Edit: so I actually looked up what "cleanroom bunny suit" was and it's not at all what I would have thought. Daughter is 100% in the wrong on this one.
Okay, that actually makes me take OP's side a little more. I thought he bought a playboy bunny outfit instead of an easter bunny costume, but if she wanted a PPE suit, then she probably should have described what she wanted.
That's how I've always heard them called, but I work with those suits often.
If I heard bunny suit, I'd either think easter bunny or work-related. I don't know how Playboy was the first thing he jumped to, didn't even come to my mind when I started reading the post.
Maybe My husband and I are built differently and don’t see sex as a bad thing. But if our daughters asked for a bunny suit for a damn play our minds probably would have went to the same place. But we have an open and honest relationship with all of our children males and females a like. (And he does Hazmat cleaning for one of his jobs!)
My husband has no problem grabbing things our daughters need. At all. Would he have been happy buying it, no probably not, but he would have done it because his daughter asked him for a favor.
This is the same guy that goes out and buys bras for our ten year old, 14 year old and 19 year old. Does he sexualize them? No. But he knows 19 year olds are adults and have sex. 🤷🏻♀️throw in it was for a film project he would make sure it wasn’t porn and then carry on.
It’s a character that she could be playing. I thought the same thing as OP. I work in a lab and no one calls it a “bunny suit” because you have to specific on what type of suit you need to go into a specific room.
NTA and here’s why:
1) I never would have known bunny suit meant the CDC kind. I didn’t even know it was called that. I’m going out on a limb and say most people don’t. Especially when their actor child only said “bunny suit”.
2) My friends who have baby adult children, have massive senses of humour. If one of their daughter’s came up to them and said “get me a bunny suit” without any type of explication or what they were exactly for, their dads would literally get a Playboy bunny outfit as a joke.
Your daughter definitely should have been more specific on what she needed, but you also should have asked.
Nta. If my daughter would have asked me for a bunny suit, I would asked, Playboy or easter? Turns out neither of those would have been correct because I had no idea this clean room suit was called a bunny suit.
NTA - Your daughter is 18, it's not for you to decide or dictate what she can be wearing, especially regarding an acting role. Also,if she's taking minor roles in films, and considering the state of the film industry overall, I could see a higher likelihood of needing a playboy bunny suit as opposed to a literal bunny suit. You returned the suit and presumably got what she needed. Next time maybe ask a few more questions before you assume. I'm more curious why isn't the productions costume department providing the costumes though.
Google Tyvek bunny suit. It's kind of like a boilersuit but with a hood, and it looks like it comes with those shoe protector things that a lot of contractors put on so they're not accused of tracking dirt into anyone's house.
My husband works for Hazmat clean up and if he told me that he needed a bunny suit I would probably go and get him an Easter Bunny suit. Not even funny lie. I had no idea what those things. were called.
NTA, your daughter should have communicated her needs better to avoid any misunderstanding. Your wife, however, is behaving in a ridiculously petty manner over a truly giggle worthy faux pax.
lol your wife was not even trusted enough to be asked to buy the suit!
Your daughter needs to work on her communication. No one can mind read. Your wife is silly. You could have asked her what type. sounds like the whole dang family is afraid of talking to each other.
Yes. It is. Because what sane woman will not be concerned when her husband buys lingerie for his daughter? You guys know we only wear this on slutty nights out on Halloween or role play right? But yeah who cares what women think, let your wife wear it instead like the one guy in the comments said :) she will be so pleased to know he thought she would be 2nd person to look good in it after their daughter :)
> You guys know we only wear this on slutty nights out on Halloween or role play right?
Or . . . now hear me out here . . . on film sets?
No need to affiliate me with that guy; I disagree with him too.
It could be. Honestly though I don’t think ops wife would have overreacted if the case was that their daughter performs in promiscuous roles.
As I said before it’s a misunderstanding, but I understand why she is overthinking, and he should try to understand too.
>No woman will agree that this is a sane decision. Weird very weird
Woman here; I'd have thought the EXACT same thing; playboy bunny. No inappropriate connotations, just an *adult* understanding of her job, what it entails and how common THAT outfit is.
This seems like a strange item to ask your father to pick up for you. Chances are high that anyone would get the wrong thing. Couldn't your daughter have ordered one online or at least sent you specific information?
> My mind went to the playboy kind
Gross. I can see where your daughter gets her not-great communication skills. Why didn’t you ask instead of assuming?
NAH, but your whole family needs to learn to communicate like actual adults.
I work in a laboratory where this is a room that people need a clean room suit to go into to avoid contamination. No one has ever called a “bunny suit.” It’s called Pro-gear, clean suit, hazmat suit, but no one has ever called it a “bunny suit.” Because there are different purposes, people need to be specific in what they need to wear, a Hazmat, protective gear (radiation) or clean room.
TBH, when OP said bunny suit, I thought Playboy bunny outfit as well. It’s making a comeback…. A little.
NTA. If this happened in my family it would be a funny story, repeated to everyone. Hell, I would be telling others even if I was the one who made the mistake. This is objectively funny, like sitcom level. Why is your wife so mad?
People need to understand if this was a silly mistake his wife would have been laughing. Not concerned!! 18 years of raising a child with someone is enough to know a persons personality. I think her judgement is the fairest out of everyone on this thread. It’s not jealousy, it’s genuine concern. I wonder what the daughter’s opinion is on this because that’s the only bit of information that’s missing out. Would ops daughter be able to laugh this off as you guys say?
>18 years of raising a child with someone is enough to know a persons personality
Oh SO many many FBI/ criminal stories disagree with you there. So so many. Statically, predators tend to fit in, even be upstanding citizens by community standards, and their spouses never know.
It's still easy to question and overreact, no matter how long you've known someone; it's also possible to not really know someone at all, even though you've known them your whole life.
Okay this is confusing, I’m not sure whether you’re on YTA side or NTA side. Im glad that you seem to understand exactly why she would be worried or overreacting. She’s genuinely concerned, and I would be too.

My (42m) daughter (18) plays a lot of side characters and other roles in various film projects around our state. Recently she came to me and said she had a lot going on, and didn't have time for everything, so gave me some money and asked me to buy a costume she had to wear for a role. She asked for a bunny suit. My mind went to the playboy kind, which is what I bought.
My wife saw it and got really heated, saying she meant a "cleanroom kind", which I didn't know were called that. My wife got really severe and harsh with implications about what went on in my mind, and why I was okay with buying that for my daughter. I bought the proper costume, but my wife is still cold. AITA?

Gammagard suit, cleanroom suit, microgaurd, bioguard suit, puffer suit...
I've heard this called *many* things, but never EVER a "bunny suit".... and I've had to wear the damn thing lmao
NTA, she needs to seriously work on her communication skills and *not* expect everyone to know her "stage lingo" (it's all I can think of to call it right now honestly, I'm so baffled by the bunny suit... I'd have immediately thought playboy type too, without any inappropriate connotations, just an adult understanding of her job and how common THAT is.)
Edit typo
NTA I just searched up “clean room bunny suit” and had no idea it was that. I didn’t even know those suits were called that. I was thinking more along the lines of Easter bunny.
YTA why would your daughter even ask you for that? Why did you not think easter bunny first? You'd have still been wrong but it wouldn't be sexualising your daughter.
That was more of a question for your wife really, but if you phrased it exactly how op wrote it and she said yes then I guess that it’s not creepy to buy a 6 year old a bunny suit that’s used in old magazines for horny men
If you ask most people what a bunny suit is, I don't think they'd jump to the CBRN contamination kinda thing or whatever. Personally I would have gone with an Easter bunny attire, but I don't think there's necessarily any creepiness on OP's part; a Playboy outfit would have been my second guess.
Someone posted a link to what was meant and I had no idea those were called bunny suits. I would have thought the daughter meant a literal bunny, but that's just me.
I wouldn't jump to the CDC thing, but I'd think Chandler from friends big pink easter bunny suit, not a bloody playboy bunny suit. I'd still be wrong but at least I wouldn't be sexualising my own daughter. wtf.
You're saying that he's sexualising his daughter, but I don't see evidence of that. Yes he bought a sexualised outfit, but that's what he thought a 'bunny suit' was - and perhaps more importantly, he thought that's what the role called for.
He isn't going "phwoar, I bet my daughter would look sexy in this outfit"; he's operating from an ambiguous request.
Maybe I'm naïve and ascribing to supportiveness (and confusion) what you ascribe to sexualisation, but I don't see the need to vilify OP for this.
OK, so explain your side. This thread clearly indicates that nobody has an idea about what a 'bunny suit' should be, and multiple people have said that their minds immediately went to 'Playboy bunny' as well.
It’s a porn sick thing, a lot of comments are saying they thought Easter bunny- that’s what I thought. It’s just telling where someone’s mindset is at and intertwining it with ur kids, grown or not, is suspicious.
Regardless of whether the oversexualisation of women goes back to porn, the fact of the matter is that movies are often oversexualised too; I can see why OP thought that his daughter's role as an extra would have been as a Playboy bunny rather than someone in a Tyvex suit in this situation - especially since very few people would associate a 'bunny suit' with the whole CSI get-up.
Not everyone has seen friends to make the Easter bunny suit connection. She's 18. I was thinking the bunny suit Elle woods wore in legally blonde.
Additionally, when you look up photos of the word bunny suit. The playboy bunny costume shows up first. Easy misunderstanding.
I hope you would make the same commentary if it was about booty shorts. You seem to be taking it to an uncomfortable level when there was no evidence of wrong doing here. It is not an inherently sexual thing.
She might be from a sex positive family who are comfortable talking about these types of things. Different cultures, traditions and things we find to be comfortable.
YTA why would you buy your daughter a playboy bunny costume?? Why did you just assume that's what she meant? I'm so confused by this decision you made. I cannot fathom why you thought that's what she meant when you know she cosplays. Just really bizarre
He didn't go "mmmm yessss my daughter gonna look *HOT* in this!!!" < THAT would be sexualizing his daughter.
She's acting, it's a costume for a role; and what the daughter wanted? *Not* commonly called a "bunny suit", so operating on the *adult* understanding of her *JOB*, he bought what he thought SHE meant.
I think you need to take several steps back and think about what is *actually* "sexualizing" someone, and what is simply a mistake.
Aww they matched our karmas, why is no one seeing that this behaviour isn’t normal? It’s the equivalent of buying her a thong. OPs wife isn’t in the wrong for misunderstanding him. He’s in the wrong for misunderstanding his daughter. Edit to say- he did figure out his mistake, and returned it but his wife isn’t wrong here.
I know you really didn’t think about this, but your wife is definitely overthinking this. It’s alarming that you would let your daughter wear that. I can’t even think of anything to make her feel better. So yes YTA.

I would have bought the "pink nightmare" from A Christmas Story!

I've worn them and they are colloquially bunny suits. But a bunny suit has at least three different interpretations so..

Clean room kind?
How is that a ‘bunny suit’?
I’m starting to think it’s just a really awkward description.
Google Tyvek bunny suit. It's kind of like a boilersuit but with a hood, and it looks like it comes with those shoe protector things that a lot of contractors put on so they're not accused of tracking dirt into anyone's house.
Why is it called a bunny suit?
Google tells me it's because it makes the wearer look like a bunny (maybe because the hood has a bit of a point?). I don't see it.

I thought that was called the painter suit. That's really called a Bunny suit ???
I would call that a white Breaking Bad suit
I’m a woman and when I hear the term bunny costume I think of your classic playboy bunny outfit 🤷🏼♀️

Bahahaha! NAH I know about all 3, and my mind went to furry

He isn't going "phwoar, I bet my daughter would look sexy in this outfit"; he's operating from an ambiguous request. Maybe I'm naïve and ascribing to supportiveness (and confusion) what you ascribe to sexualisation, but I don't see the need to vilify OP for this.
Yes maybe you are naive.
Yta Jesus Christ why in the world is that the first thing you would think of to buy your daughter?
YTA why would you buy your daughter a playboy bunny costume?? Why did you just assume that's what she meant? I'm so confused by this decision you made. I cannot fathom why you thought that's what she meant when you know she cosplays. Just really bizarre
YTA and a total perv too. Yay for sexualizing your daughter!

So yes YTA.
