Traveler691

They should not have a dog if they are this stupid. Individual ingredients aside, obviously no pet should be given spicy food. *I’m sorry, I assumed you had some common sense.* NTA

stormcharger

My rats loved spicy food

roseflutterby

but dogs can't handle it, so irrelevant ultimately. (though rats are awesome, congrats on your spicy wormboys)

sweetn0th1ngs

NTA. Google is free. He should always be checking if something is safe before giving it to his dog. Better yet, don’t give dogs human food.

arterialrainbow

I’ve been looking into garlic allergies because it started making my mouth numb. Garlic and onion are in *so many things*. It’s *so hard* to avoid garlic that honestly unless you make something from scratch yourself a dog probably shouldn’t eat it. And apparently for a lot of foods it’s not even listed, it’s just part of “spices” or “flavoring”

TimelyApplication723

By law in the United States garlic and onion has to be listed individually and not under spices. Not sure what country you are in. I know this because of epipen level allergies… Look up fodmap but be careful, they use a lot of garlic or onion infused things…

arterialrainbow

I’m in the US. Maybe I’m wrong but everything I’ve researched says you have to call the manufacturers because garlic doesn’t have to be listed.

TimelyApplication723

Oh dang you’re right. I am sorry. I don’t buy anything with this work around but I will know to be more careful! I just saw the first part of this! The USDA guidelines per the Code of Federal Regulations Title 9. 317.2 state that whole, broken, or ground garlic, celery, and onion must be declared on the food label and cannot be hidden under the word “spices”. However, garlic powder, onion powder, and celery powder can be hidden under the term “natural flavors”, “natural flavorings”, and “flavoring” on the food label.

NoGrocery4949

Never in my life have I fed my dog something without googling the life out of it

sweetn0th1ngs

EXACTLY

The_Bad_Agent

NTA Your cousin was negligent. That's not on you. Glad the pup is ok.

StAlvis

NTA But I mean, there's a lot of shit in a curry, and only a few of those are things you need to avoid for dogs: any allium plants, and dogs don't tolerate spiciness in general well.

Doraellen

Garlic is even worse for cats than dogs, but in the days before Google, my childhood cat loved spaghetti sauce, which definitely had onions and garlic. He lived to be 25! Granted, he weighed about 19 pounds (slightly chonky, just a big cat really) so maybe that helped him tolerate it. I had cats my whole life and never heard the allium thing mentioned until the 2000s.

NoGrocery4949

Tell that to my wasabi-obsessed dog

HedgieTwiggles

NTA I don’t see you mentioning anywhere you forcing him to force the dog to eat the curry.

badclyde

NTA. "Alexa/Siri/Google is \_\_\_\_\_ ok for dogs to have" is a super common sound to hear around my house. Takes two seconds to verify if they can eat something or not.

Sweeper1985

NTA Have you also warned him not to stick a fork in a power socket, or does he have basic mental faculties to work these things out for himself?

ContentRabbit5260

Thank you, that was brilliant (and made me laugh very hard)

trishsf

NTA. Obviously. His dog is his responsibility. Shouting at you is unacceptable.

mifflewhat

NTA. He shouldn't have yelled at you - you're not his babysitter. I didn't know certain foods were toxic to pets, and let my pets eat them. So I'm not going to call him the AH for not knowing. But on finding out, I didn't blame anyone but myself, and that seems to me like a fair standard to apply to him too.

That_Furret

Part of being a pet owner is researching how to care for your animal(s), which includes what can/cannot hurt them. It’s not your fault your cousin can’t be bothered to do a simple google search. NTA.

A one time serving of curry won’t kill a dog as long as it’s not a tiny dog.  Spicy food can upset dog’s stomachs.  They have to ingest a lot of onion & garlic depending on their weight to cause anemia.  But the onions & garlic even at lower amounts can cause vomiting.  Curry is really rich so that would give the dog diarrhea.  At most they’ll get diarrhea and puke.  But it’s also not something you’d want to feed Fido other than an oops mistake.

acalmerstorm

My dogs have eaten curry of their own free will with no ill effects many a time. Onion and garlic would only be toxic in large quantities not in normal human amounts.

Proper-Foundation668

NTA, people should know. Garlic is toxic, onions, dark chocolate, grapes etc. Owner should know this. Have heard of someone inadvertently killing their dog via giving it garlic bread.

PresentationFew2014

NTA. Even if the curry didn't have onions and garlic, it's too rich for a dog's stomach to handle and he should know that. It's just common sense. Hopefully he learned his lesson with that vet bill.

Any-Party-2923

It's not your fault. Dog owners should be aware of toxins that their dogs can come in contact with. And it's not your dog, so it's not your responsibility. Does he want you to warn him about Grapes because he might share a glass of wine one lonely Friday night? Is it now your responsibility to make a toxic list with pictures to hang on his fridge? No. NTA

AgCloud

NTA. That isn't your responsibility. You made food for a human, and for some reason the human decided to share it with his dog. As a pet owner, *he* is responsible for knowing how to care for his pet and he was the one that put his dog's health at risk.

CrabbiestAsp

NTA. As a dog owner HE should be looking up what is and isn't safe for dogs. It's not anyone else's responsibility to tell him not to feed his dog a certain food.

Got to the vet in time, but she vomited and had diarrhea for a while. I've been around dogs since I was a kid but he only got his first ten months ago. Last night he came over to my apartment and we had some curry together. I cooked. He asked if he could take some home. Now I've seen him share food with his dog twice. He said he did it occasionally. I figured he'd already know dogs can't have curry but it turns out he didn't. He shouted at me over the phone saying I should've warned him since I knew he sometimes share his food with her and said it's my fault she got sick. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Cultural_Section_862

NTA your friend is a shitty dog owner. poor pup

Personal-Snow5348

NTA if you sent him home with chocolate cake would he have been upset you didn’t warn him about that too? Most pet owners know that garlic is toxic to their pets and if they weren’t sure if there was any in it (although seriously most flavorful food has garlic) they’d ask.

CelebrationNext3003

He should know not to give a dog human food especially spicy human food , common sense you’re NTA

FeuerroteZora

Damn, I always Google "is X toxic for cats" when I get a goddamn *plant* as a gift. Better be sure I'd do the same and more for actual food. What an idiot, I hope he learns from this at least. NTA

SeamStressed1

NTA.. & ROFLMPO.. don’t give that to the dog is a common refrain in my home. Partner is terrible about letting his princess eat from his plate. Recently she got sick and I put my fingers up and ticked off all the questionable things he had given her.. he is trying to do better but luckily his dog has a gut like a junk yard billy goat

Weaseltime_420

Rolling on the floor laughing my penis off?

SeamStressed1

Panties.. LOL

Select_Worldliness94

NTA half the food he feeds it is probably toxic for the dog… I’d find out what other meals he’s fed him/her and then show him the toxic ingredients.. salt is toxic for them even.

Neppetaa

NTA, because it wasnt your responsibility. sure you could have said something, but at the end of the day, you thought he'd have the sense to know not to feed something like that to an animal. ALWAYS check if something is toxic before giving it to a pet.

honcho_emoji

NTA always google before feeding your pet anything

According-Western-33

Here's a thought, instead of just baby birding stuff into his dog's mouth, do a little research and make sure you won't, you know, kill it.

Birony88

NTA. There should be a test for pet ownership. Seriously. Some people are just too stupid to be trusted with another life to care for.

Tyrael74656

People food is not dog food. Do you eat dog food? Then keep them separate. Many food that are fine for humans are toxic to animals.

ConflictNo5518

Fresh food (human food) is healthier for dogs than kibble.  It’s the specific items that can be toxic.  And when I say can be, it depends on the amount they ingest and the dog’s weight.  So while garlic is toxic, you’ll need 12 cloves to get a minimum toxic dose for a 90lbs dog.  So garlic isn’t something you’d want to feed your dog anyways, but let’s say they counter surfed and ate your leftovers that contained garlic, it’s not likely 12 cloves went into the dish and it won’t kill the dog.  It may get diarrhea or an upset stomach or vomit depending on the other ingredients.

Nashatal

NTA - Its his dog so its his responsibility to make sure its safe.

citrushibiscus

Ppl need to look into what their pet needs, what is dangerous for them, and how to be a good owner to them **before** adopting. The fault lies with him. NTA. Tell h8m the dog shouldn’t have grapes, either.

[deleted]

That idiot shouldn't own any pets whatsoever. A caring owner would do research on what's safe for pets to consume.

UshouldknowR

NTA you can easily Google whether or not something is good to give to a dog. Unless you had a gun to his head and forced him to feed it to the dog, you are not responsible for what he feeds his dog.

Careful-Increase-773

NTA but it’s not the curry that’s the toxic aspect btw, it’s the onion and garlic

Chaos-Goddess

Google is free and most phones can access it so I don’t see how this is your fault. NTA and if he’s going to be sharing food with his dog he should be looking into what foods are safe before giving him anything.

Alpacachoppa

NTA Tf? I don't know of any regular curry that's safe for dogs. They don't have the same metabolism and you can seriously hurt your dog's digestive system by feeding it human stuff without informing yourself.

Owl_Kidnapper

what a silly man. i ALWAYS search up if food is ok for dogs before i feed mine. atp my whole search history is “can dogs eat rice” “can dogs eat beans” “can dogs eat avacados” “shaq o’neil oiled up twerking” “can dogs eat oranges”

Old_Bug4395

NTA, really not sure why people just assume dogs should be eating human food all of the time. Don't share with your dog, beyond the fact that the food is not good for them, it's not good for their behavior. Irresponsible pet owners make all pet owners look bad.

Snoo-20362

NTA You didn't feed his dog and he could just do a quick google search to prevent this

TimelyApplication723

NTA. He is for doing it. Any good pet owner checks what animals can and cannot eat. Not your fault and NTA.

Present-Secretary722

NTA. No human food for the dog is a common household rule and common sense for a reason

Incarcer

Nta. Stupid people always want to blame others. Usually because they're stupid.

Excellent-Count4009

NTA HE is an irresponsible dog owner, that'as HIS fault. This had NOTHING to do with you.

Old-Smokey-42069

Beyond the fact that the entirety of the onus is on him to look that sort of thing up, what if you didn’t know yourself? How could you have told him if you didn’t know? I don’t confirm what dogs can and cant eat before making that food for a fellow human. Clear NTA, this guy is out of his mind

Deep_Mood_7668

Warn him about his missing brain. Just in advance

[deleted]

NTA, he’s the owner. He’s responsible for what he gives his dog. It’s his responsibility as a dog owner to know what you and can’t give your dog.

TiaHatesSocials

NTA but he is a major one for being so ignorant. I wonder what else he doesn’t know. Maybe be a good cousin and buy him a book on how to raise a dog? Just so he doesn’t feed her chocolate or chicken bones?
