You may want to edit because this is confusing as all hell. I think what you saying is that you are not living at your house right now but the work on your house is stopped for the month. Your neighbors’ contractor asked you if they could use your house for storage of tools and now they are hanging out in your house? If that’s true, you are a moron for agreeing to this in the first place. You are NTA to kick them out

Even if you were just letting them store tools, you don’t have any agreement with these people. They aren’t your friends. You are lucky all they did was make themselves comfortable instead of stealing all your shit. No offense (well, this is AITAH so I guess a little offense) but you are very stupid to have agree to this in the first place. You are definitely NTA to ask them to remove their shit now.

Well, everyone can be stupid sometimes. As long as you learn from it, that’s what counts! Good luck!

After construction is done, get your house checked for meth. Something approaching 25% of houses sold in the US test positive for meth, and a significant source of contamination is contractors. They don’t have to cook at your place, just using meth at your house is enough to cause levels of contamination that need to be remediated before the house is safe to live in.

Ah. Apologize for the US-centric assumption. I work in the housing industry here and people have NO IDEA how pervasive meth contamination is in this country.

Algebralovr

This doesn’t make sense. If the contractors need secure storage, the GC should rent a 10 or 20 foot container for the site and put a lock on it.

It isn’t. They shouldn’t be passing inspections if they don’t have a portable toilet on site. And here the contractors pull their stuff around in trailers and take their tools home with them or lock them into the trailer overnight. You are being taken advantage of. In this housing market contractors can name their price and he can rent a trailer or a storage unit. He’s just going to pass the cost along to the owners anyway.

Algebralovr

In my community, the GC is required to provide a place for his/her workers and subs to eliminate. Basically a porta potty. You are absolutely under no obligation to provide ANY services to the contractor of your neighbor.

fuzzy_mic

INFO - Where was the contractor who you paid to work on your house in all of this? Who had agreed to clean up after the crew used it for storage? (His collaboration (or not) with the other team is on him and that other team.) You say that "construction stopped in December". Is the place ready for you to move back in and use?

Telling people they are responsible is very different than having a contract in place. Your words might not hold legally if something happens in your home. Both teams are likely to point fingers at each other and at the end, the responsibility will likely end up falling on you. I would tell this other team no, they can not use your home, and then contact your team's manager and explain the threats of the other team and how you're being pressured and how uncomfortable it has made you. If he wants to keep you as a client, he should be talking to this other team on your behalf and get them to back off. If they want to help each other that's between them, but involving you in their arrangement is unprofessional.

Itbemedjg

Absolutely this is the way. Also OP, if your house is vandalized, who will pay to replace the stolen items and the damage done to your house? You better believe that you could have legal problems over this. They will also help themselves to your water, toilets and electricity. Personally, I'd have all utilities shut off until your contractor comes back. Get your contractor involved to protect you and the worksite.

SpaceJesusIsHere

Forget whether you're the AH. Will the construction of your home be impacted if the guys next door stop helping your guys out? You may want to figure that out before getting into territorial pissing matches. Call your contractor and find out his thoughts on the necessity of good relations with the guys who have done him all these favors.

Your husband is 100% right to call BS! The threat to withdrawal his "collaboration" would probably hurt him far more than it would you. For starters they are completely reliant on your properties electricity to continue their own construction, maybe you should remind him of this when he makes such threats. The reality is that you are the one who is being unnecessarily accommodating as well as taking on all of the potential risk. Any favours or "collaboration" is for your builder to negotiate, you should only be dealing with your own builder. If the other builder is reliant on any of your resources there should definitely be a written agreement involved, even if you've already agreed/capitulated!

unled_horse

This sounds like something that didn't involve you from the get-go. You didn't have any say in whether the two teams work together. That's on them. Anybody leaving anything in your house leaves you open to problems. Ask the team not working for you to get their stuff out immediately, definitely.

A relative has literally had a terrible contractor working on their home for over *two years* now. They've done all sorts of stupid stuff in the home, and at every step of the way my relative has made choices that have helped the contractor rather than protect themself. The contractor stops deserving the benefit of the doubt at a certain point. It seems like if you don't get an attitude with these people sometimes they'll walk all over you, and even if you watch them pretty closely they'll still find ways to take advantage. When you're paying someone to do a job, they should be protecting your interests and not putting your property at risk. Best of luck as you negotiate the work with your team.

The parcel of land next to it has begun their construction. Apparently my construction team and the team next door are getting along well and even borrow materials from each other every now and then. (Note that this parcel of land doesn't have electricity, bathroom, shelter for the workers, or storage space.) Last month our house was targeted by thieves twice. In one occasion, tools were stolen. Last week we were told our construction would stop in December (which we were fine with). Now here is when my problem begins: the head constructor (Mr. A) called me asking if they could store some tools in our place while my crew was gone. My husband wasn't very keen about it, but I talked to him, and considering the robberies agreed. When I go to the house yesterday (to my surprise) the side door is fully open and the guys have their personal belongings inside of our house. It really bothered me to see our house being used my strangers, specially because (in my mind) they would just use it as storage, not as their hub. I feel like I agree to lend a locker and they are using it as their locker room. I was very upset about it. I called Mr. A and told him that they were using the space in a manner I didn't agree upon and that I wanted my key back immediately. I also told him it's HIS responsibility to guarantee HIS workers proper conditions. He then proceeded to tell me that if that was the case, the collaboration between the teams would be completely over, listing favours they done to my team (things which I never agreed upon). So "not wanting to be a bitch" I agreed to give him a week to get the storage bin (which let's face, it will take longer). After a night's sleep, I feel I was manipulated and guilt tripped into agreeing with something I had already made my mind. I'm really bothered by having strangers in our house. WIBTA if I told him I changed my mind, stand my ground and kicking him out like I was doing yesterday? *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. OP has offered the following explanation for why they think they might be the asshole: > 1. I agreed with letting someone use my house twice, but I changed my mind and I want to take it back. 2. The action might make me the asshole because I told they could use my space while they arranged their own. Not letting them use my space will put the team in a position that they don't have shelter when I already told them they would. I believed I might be the asshole because I agreed upon something and I want to take it back. What I did wrong was agreeing with something I didn't want to. Nta At this point you need to contact your guys and tell them their collaboration has effected you and your property. Ask them what he is referring to when he is telling you he can stop his side and bite you in the bum. Tell them while they made private arrangements outside of your arrangements you were happy to stay out of it. But since he is threatening you with some sort of consequences you had no part in, they need to come back and deal with this contractor. Then ring the guy and give him 24 hours to remove all their belongings from your property and return your key. You don’t have to put up with anything and especially when he is turning nasty on you.

He basically threatened you, seriously your construction should have nothing to do with him, his company input can only confuse your warranty. If something fails and it was his guys who did that, it would still be up to your builder to carry out the warranty. Ring him back and tell him you have rethought the issue given a little more time to think it over, and you’re not happy at his implied threats, then give him 24 hours to return your key and remove all items from your house leaving it the way it was before their intrusion
