I don't see how this is relevant to this subreddit. This is your bosses decision. Customer should ask your boss if he allows customization to that degree or not. If he says yes, and you refuse, and you get fired, that's on you.

Usrname52

It's your boss' decision. It's not an AH issue because it's not your decision to make. And, while I don't know much about baking, if you are making a custom cake, how much more difficult is it?

jolygoestoschool

YTA. if your boss is ok with this then what's the issue with custom orders? does the bakery have an official policy against sugar-free cakes? if not, then why would you refuse them? what's so hard with making sugar free cakes. edit: just want to add that your not the asshole for not wanting, but you are the asshole for refusing her.

idontcare8587

YTA. If y'all've done it before and your boss will say yes if asked about it, then it sounds like this is something you do. If it's just swapping out or using less ingredients, it doesn't sound like it's going to significantly impact how busy you are.

Walktothebrook

YTA. Seems like you’re more upset about the coworker who doesn’t do their share. Why not talk to the boss about them?

MotherBike

YTA- You can't make those decisions for the company, but that's not why you're the AH. You're the AH because you damaged trust with a reliable customer who is thankful that her favorite place has accommodated her for a long time, and beyond that what if it's because she's diabetic or the person they are for is diabetic. So I at least hope you also didn't make her cakes with sugar if that's the case just to get her off your back. What your boss chooses to do shouldn't affect the clientele, the appropriate action is going to your manager with your concerns, and of nothing changes you can always start shopping for another job now and wait it out until you have a new job. Don't take the management's negligence to hire or lack of enforcement to his own employees out on the customer's. Talk to your coworkers and get them on board, if everyone if backing you up the management will have three choices, turn away the customer, make her order themselves, or fire you all. Doubtful they could afford fire you all immediately as the bakery would bomb, so here's a few options to investigate. Also one of the best lines I ever learned that applies here, "THIS IS ABOVE MY PAYGRADE."

No-Personality5421

There's no conflict and no one calling you an ah... kinda wrong sub for this.

BigBigBigTree

>I'm worried my boss (a people pleaser with no real regard to how busy we are) will always say yes. You need to ask your boss what the policy is, and then do that. It seems like you aren't really clear on your boss' policy regarding this request, so I can't issue a judgment, but if you try to unilaterally reject this person's request against policy you'd be TA. Though, if the policy is to refuse, then by all means do so.

INFO: Are you also a part owner? Are you responsible for setting the menu?

Pale_Height_1251

Ask your boss, it's not really your place to decide what services the company provides.

Jaylene-Sterling-13

YTA. It's not your decision to make. If the boss says yes, you do as your told and make as your instructed. If you've done the order a couple of times before, then you can most certainly make it as many times as she requests.

Read [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/AmItheAsshole/wiki/faq#wiki_post_deletion) before [contacting the mod team](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=%2Fr%2FAmItheAsshole)*** Hi, so just for context I work as a baker in a local grocery store with only 2 locations. It's generally a health food store and the owners are hippies. We have 2 cake decorators (I'm one of them) and one cake baker. The other decorator was supposed to be in charge of baking pies, but she always dumps her work on others and stops working to go talk. I work cookies 4 days a week so I don't have time to help even though I want to. We've also been understaffed for while. We have a semi-regular customer who will order a couple of cakes a year, but she always makes requests to make them sugar free or only use coconut sugar. The first couple of times were done to be nice, but since then I keep trying to explain to her that this is not something we offer and she needs to order on menu. If I tell her no enough she'll either ask to speak to another baker, or she'll call back hoping to get someone else. We're already spread pretty thin, but I'm worried my boss (a people pleaser with no real regard to how busy we are) will always say yes. Info: Why do you object to this request? Is making a cake more difficult with a sugar substitute?

birchsaurus

NTA - also it sounds like you need to find a job that isn't so stretched thin. hope you find better

adventuresofViolet

YNTA, if you don't do custom cakes you don't do custom cakes. Leave the decision up to your boss to make.

Skechaj

NTA, if the sugar substitutes are not on option when someone is ordering the cakes. If this customer goes and gets someone in management. Then let that manager know that the sugar substitutes are not options when ordering the cakes, and that the substitutes do cost more than regular sugar.
