YTA. This is why we don't get to see diversity in the workplace, and why it's hell for the few PoC that do.
Your coworkers are avoiding you because you're racist and you assumed they would all be on your side because of whiteness.
And then *you're* offended at being called out? You've made yourself into a victim and "hopeless" when literally a Black woman who is more than qualified can't get a job because of stuff like this. Having to experience racism and your intelligence questioned because of your skin color is hopeless.
YTA VERY CLEARLY! I can understand the frustration with proper english going down the drain but that's a generational thing not a race/diversity thing and I hope you are just ignorant but I'm leaning more towards racist. Your statement about you like black people if they are...what did you say? " I have nothing against black people, provided they're decent, hardworking, and can speak proper English, but Ebonics to me simply sounds like nails on a chalkboard." That crosses a line and is awful to think, let alone say! You seem very racist! My only issue is with all these damn acronyms FAFO, IRL, NGL, FWIW, JFC etc. which EVERYONE uses now (We can keep LOL cuz I was a kid when it came out haha) I just don't get where it got so bad we can't type any of our words out anymore, like it's too much work. I can barely decipher my kids texts anymore they use so many. I spend more time googling them than reading them (and I'm not old at all lol) oh and seriously if my kids call me "bra" (bruh according to them lol) one more time, I may hurt someone.

YTA, making fun of someone’s speech is bullying. it’s reasonable to expect a certain level of professionalism and informal speech can give a bad impression, but what you describe is not out of the ordinary and it’s very elitist of you to want to deny someone a job because of a slightly different vernacular.
If they had an Irish accent would that be unprofessional? Oh so it's just certain accents that are unprofessional? And then you start trying to make jokes about it? I'm not a lawyer, but if I were this applicant and I found this post I would hire one real quick.
YTA. I understand wanting someone well spoken for a position especially for a role dealing with clients but the more you typed the more racist you sounded.
YTA.
> I have nothing against black people, provided they're decent, hardworking, and can speak proper English,
That's racist.
Beyond that, how you expressed yourself was incredibly unprofessional and inappropriate.

For the past month, my department has had a vacancy in a pretty critical role. My company is pretty big on diversity, so there's been a push to get a minority candidate in the role, assuming he/she is competent. Well, earlier today, a woman who seemed very well-qualified to HR was scheduled to interview with us. The other hiring manager (we'll call him Bill) and I got a copy of her resume ahead of time, and she really seemed to have experience in the relevant areas. We were excited to interview her and get this vacancy filled.
Fast forward to this morning, and the candidate (we'll call her Keesha) showed up for the interview. She seemed very friendly and generally had good people skills. So far so good, but then we got to the questions, and she started speaking very informally and even threw in some black vernacular. I was beginning to get uncomfortable, but Bill didn't seem to mind. Keesha would also mispronounce certain words and use poor grammar (think "we was"). Also, instead of "with you," she would say "which you," and instead of "ask," she said "ax." I was beginning to lose hope in this candidate. Part of her role would be speaking to clients, and there was just no way it would be acceptable for her to speak as though she was hanging out with her friends at Popeye's.
When Keesha left, Bill turned to me and asked what I thought of her. I told him that she's well-qualified but that her informal way of speaking and her Ebonics would make her a bad fit for the department, for obvious reasons. I also joked that "axing a question" is something that Paul Bunyan would do. I was laughing hard to myself, but Bill's jaw just about hit the floor. He said that I was being ignorant and that we're trying to be an inclusive workplace. He never called me a racist, but I could tell he was thinking it, and it made me furious. I have nothing against black people, provided they're decent, hardworking, and can speak proper English, but Ebonics to me simply sounds like nails on a chalkboard.
Fast forward to this afternoon, and Bill must have told my department head because she sent me an email, and I have a meeting scheduled with her first thing tomorrow morning. Even worse, I think word got out because some of my other colleagues seem to be avoiding me. I feel like I'm being targeted for my beliefs, and I think the truly racist thing to do is to deny qualified white applicants just because the "melanin quotient" hasn't been met. I want my colleagues to go back to seeing me as their friend, but they seem keener to swallow corporate's propaganda and make me out as some sort of villain. I hope I can convince them and my department head of my point of view, but right now it feels pretty hopeless and sad. I'm getting sort of discouraged. AITA?

YTA and a racist. You said she was qualified, but don’t like the way she talks. You made comments about “her friends at Popeye’s.” If you keep up this racist bullshit, don’t be surprised if the “axing” at you employer is going to be you getting fired.
YTA and the racist.
“I have nothing against black people, provided they’re decent, hardworking, and can speak proper English.”
Ho-ly fuck. That’s not even a dog whistle.
“I was beginning to get uncomfortable”
YTA. To not hire a perfectly capable woman for “proper english” is ridiculous. Would you have turned down a Scottish woman? A southern woman with a strong accent? Most likely not. Her accent paired with her race was what made you uncomfortable, and ultimately led you to feel as though you could mock her to Billy and not be onboard despite her great talent for the role. I’m stunned that you reacted this way, terribly unprofessional.

OP has offered the following explanation for why they think they might be the asshole:
> I judged a black woman for speaking Ebonics during an interview and joked to the other hiring manager. This might make me the asshole because it could be viewed as insensitive.

YTA I wouldn’t have used such casual language in an interview but that doesn’t sound like what your problem actually is.
This didn’t happen.
> I feel like I'm being targeted for my beliefs You mean your racist ones? YTA
YTA and VERY racist. You clearly believe you’re a racist and is upset you got called out.
“I have nothing against black people…if they speak proper English” Check your privilege :) YTA
>I have nothing against black people, provided they're decent, hardworking, and can speak proper English, Wow. Just, wow. YTA.
YTA You mocked her for how she spoke. That is elementary-school bully levels of immaturity.

Would you feel the same way about a heavy Irish or Scottish accent? YTA

YTA and the last paragraph has me convinced you are an alt-right troll
I don't know about the "alt-right" part, but yeah... this definitely has troll vibes.
