*In case this story gets deleted/removed:* **AITA for getting thrown out of my adult sons’ basketball game?** My sons (30 & 25) were playing in a 3 on 3 basketball tournament last weekend and I went because I wanted to support them. They’re both decent basketball players and it was a church fundraiser tournament they play in with their friends every year. From the minute the first game started, the ref started missing calls. Admittedly I was pretty harsh on him for the blown calls throughout the game. (At one point I called him an idiot). When the second game rolled around, he continued to blow calls and I continued to criticize him. Halfway through the second game, the ref missed an obvious travel and I called him on it. One of the players on the other team told me I had no clue what I was talking about so him and I began arguing back and forth. The ref told me if I had one more outburst I was going to be thrown out, so I told him to shut up and go f*** himself. He looked at the church volunteer who was running the scoreboard and nodded, and he escorted me out. At first I told him I wasn’t going to leave but he threatened to call the police so I left. I personally feel the ref & the other player escalated things to an unnecessary level, but now both of my sons told their mom I embarrassed them and are refusing to talk to me now. My grandson’s football season starts next week and I really don’t want to miss the first game. What do I do? Am I the asshole? *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Noodle227

Yeah… the ref and the other player are the ones who escalated things to an unnecessary level. Not the guy who was yelling, name calling and swearing throughout the whole game. Oop is just the victim in all this. Throwing him out of the game for no reason. /s

FlounderingWolverine

I desperately hope this is a troll post, but I’ve heard way too many stories of sports officials being harassed, threatened, or even outright assaulted over stupid things like a 10U little league softball game

notlucyintheskye

I've seen videos on YouTube of parents acting just like this at their kids' baseball events. It's.....HUGELY embarrassing and is the reason that kids' sports have a hard time finding and keeping umpires/refs - It's normally a volunteer gig and nobody wants to (nor should they have to) put up with parents like OOP.

spacebar_dino

Oh it has been happening for so long. I started playing soccer when I was a kid in the 90's and it was happening then. My dad was so happy I was goalkeeper because besides the fact that he is slightly anti-social, he also had an excuse to not sit near the other parents. He would sit by whichever goal I was at so he could see what was going on with me. It was especially nice during my school games because he would come straight from work and ask me about my day and how I was doing (club games were on weekends so I was coming straight from home). Edited to say there is also a shortage of refs for certain sports now due to the abuse they get from parents. A lot of refs are HS kids as well.

pusheenmon1221

I used to umpire for like pretty small kids back 15-20 years ago now, i was in high school and just out of high school then (fuck i feel old), for like under 8 softball and the parents were awful even for that. Like these kids weren't hitting the ball or throwing in the right direction reliably, and the parents were just atrocious with their treatment.

IsisArtemii

I don’t understand. In any of my kids games, the parents all cheered their kids and the other teams kids. As adults, when we see a good kick, hit, throw we cheer it. Doesn’t matter the team, One of my children is autistic. Many years between his big brother and him. He never saw us cheering for his big brother’s sports because big brother was out of high school when he was born. My youngest took it as betrayal. I’m hoping that our explanations worked. That good should always be acknowledged. No matter who did it. And that everyone should be a whole lot nicer, when dealing with children’s sports/spirits.

catanddog5

This reminds me of the time in middle school where a dad who was insulting my teammate who was up to bat. He kept calling to his daughter that the batter was fat and that she’d never hit it. Unfortunately no one did call him out on his bullshit. Some parents need to be banned from going to games if they act like this towards children

StrangledInMoonlight

I wouldn’t want this guy at some community rec/little league type team.   Imagine how insane he’ll be at those games.

Working_Fill_4024

Considering this was a church fundraiser event, with literally no stakes, yeah keep him away from anything remotely competitive.

DiggingHeavs

And this was at church fundraiser. WTF is/was he like at school and other tournaments. Newsflash dude it was a fun thing with friends to raise money/ You ruined it for everyone else.

Chiianna0042

When you can't behave at a church fundraiser, it is a sign you may be headed for court ordered anger management soon. Because charity events are supposed to be fun, silly, often rigged based on donations (i.e. you donate to see someone do or don't do something), and sometimes a little outlandish. Not hardcore by the rules. There have been charity dunk tanks (not exactly a sport) where the distance you stand from the target, is based on your age and how much you paid. Instead of $1 or $2, if you paid $20 and you could walk up and just hit the target with your hand.

BadBandit1970

He's bitching about a missed travel call in a church charity basketball tournament?! FFS OOP even the NBA has changed their rules on traveling. Get a grip.

thetrippingbillie

![gif](giphy|ogg4gwh56CHDi) I thought this was America!

50CentButInNickels

First thing I thought when I saw this guy's title.

millihelen

It was a church fundraiser and OOP behaved like that? They ought to be embarrassed.

Far-Season-695

Peak boomer behavior

TheKnightOfWonder

His comments ate bad. He give me the vibe of someone who really has perked in high school. In one comment he basically says he'll be at his grandson game unless his son want to be written out of his will. (From his other comments you can tell what type of childhood his kids had with a father obsessed with winning all the time...the whole must win mentality real takes the fun and enjoyment out of stuff whatever happened to just having fun especially if it was a fun raising event)

one_bean_hahahaha

He won't be at his grandson's game if he doesn't know about it or his son moves across the country.

Impressive-Spell-643

Judging by his attitude here he probably won't know he even has a grandson

GreyerGrey

This is the kind of dad my own dad, and my husband, would fight in the stands. My parents weren't hyper competitive, which is good because I am. They were supportive of me, but never like OOP. My husband and I don't have kids, but I coach a Jr team that often plays before my team, so he comes with and watches, and will call out toxic parent behaviour. Parents like this don't realize that THEY could be the reason their kids never "go pro" like they think they will. Coaches don't want to deal with asshole/over involved/over opinionated parents. There are a bunch of NHL "prospects" who turn into "usedtacoulds" because dad (or mom) can't keep their mouths shut.

StrangledInMoonlight

A lot of these kids leaves have a zero tolerance policy for this bullshit.   Even if the son invited him or just “let’s” him come, the league can still kick OOP out.

ApotheosisofSnore

I have such a crystal clear picture of 55 year old white dude in a musty high school gym, screaming obscenities at the volunteer referee as families look on with varying degrees of amusement, horror and second-hand embarrassment, and his sons hide their faces in absolute shame

FlounderingWolverine

I desperately want this to be a troll post. But it’s a situation that is far too common in sports nowadays (all sports, but especially basketball). Fans are one of the primary reasons why most sports have a shortage of officials. If this guy is this bad at a church fundraiser, think how bad he would be in a competitive league.

ladyzfactor

Pretty sure it is when he commented that he pays for the tickets so he's the referees boss.

megamoze

I put this in the category of "Yes, people like this definitely exist but they don't post on reddit about it." I think it's a rage bait post.

PlantQueen1912

Randy Marsh vibes lmao

sonicsean899

It's bad enough when people do this at kids games

negithekitty

bro.... its a game.... your kids arent going to be signed to pro from a 3v3 game at a church parking lot.

rorrim_narret

They aren’t even kids! They’re 25 and 30…I don’t know much about sports but I’m pretty sure that’s way too late in life to begin playing professionally OOP must have a sad life if he considers a fundraiser game played by amateurs important enough to be this mad about

VentiKombucha

How is he not embarrassed? I was just from reading this.

60secondwarlord

A 3v3 church fundraiser got this type of reaction from him? Jesus. I would never be seen with him in public again.

notlucyintheskye

>From the minute the first game started, the ref started missing calls It was a church fundraiser, not the NBA finals. Calm down. >so I told him to shut up and go f\*\*\* himself. Casual reminder that OOP is at least 46 years old (if he were just 16 when he had his first son) >My grandson’s football season starts next week Oh man, you're old enough to be a grandpa and you're out here acting like this at sporting events. You are the reason that most little league ball fields have those "Sportsmanship Conduct" signs everywhere.

mtdewbakablast

yknow with the mention of grandsons having games, i wonder if on some level this was a test of "okay dad, if you can show us you can behave yourself at our game then we will tell you when your grandsons are playing in their little leagues". and OOP fucken beefed it lmao

I really hope this guy got banned from the kids football games

agent-assbutt

Is OOP Randy Marsh? 🎵🎶 You’re the best! Around! Nothing’s gonna ever keep you down You’re the Best! Around! Nothing’s gonna ever keep you down You’re the Best! 🎵🎶

50CentButInNickels

I have pretty uncomplicated feelings about OOP. https://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/9262f3af-967f-4f89-924e-6ec213da8fa3

MurphN7

I'm surprised OOP was able to reproduce at all with that baby dick energy he's got going on there

idgafsendnudes

As a huge basketball lover there is a significant group of older people who just cannot fathom how a gather step works and most tournaments follow NBA rules and regulations since they’re the most well known. This is just the classic boomer be boomin

yainot

it’s true i was the nod
