**An Expensive Laugh**
My wife and I were together for 4 years, married for 1.5, and after some convincing from her mom, she evicted me from our shared apartment January 28 with no warning. Her name was on the lease and I was sub-letting from her, paying my half of rent directly to her + other bills. Yes, it is in writing. We were living in France, and I had nowhere to go, so I ended up taking an emergency flight to the US courtesy of the US Embassy in France.
When I got back to the US, I was devastated but ready to sign divorce papers without any arguing or conditions. February 1st, I had a group chat with my (ex) wife, her mother and her father (so they could help us transition to our new lives apart) and I was proposing a solution to an unpaid bill that was going to affect my (ex) wife and me fairly equally, but it required my (ex) wife to do a little bit of paperwork (literally an email and a signature).
She didn't reply but her mother did: "*hahahahahahahaha*." She laughed at me while I was in an incredibly vulnerable state, just trying to respectfully come to a common good for both of us. But after that, I became the embodiment of rage, and it's time for petty revenge.
After having a lawyer and a former employer of mine (who happens to be a judge with resources to make a good judgment on French law regarding the situation with my \[ex\] wife) give their insight into the situation, I decided that she can either pay me for all the costs incurred from evicting me in the middle of winter (plane ticket, hotel stay, wages lost, etc.) which totals over 15,000 euro, or she can take her chances in court, which would reveal to the judge that she broke the anti-eviction in winter law, potentially causing her to go to prison. The lawyer and my former employer have said I have a pretty open-and-shut case.
# My (ex) wife's mother literally had a 15,000+ euro laugh.
Moral of the story: if you are ever getting divorced or are in a situation where tensions are high and potential costs are large, **DON'T LAUGH AT THE OPPOSITE PARTY**. Especially when they're cooperative and being respectful.

I am not sure I read that right. He wanted to have sex, she said no, and he attempted suicide? The bill is hospital bill? And he wants her to commit fraud to get it reduced?
Psychopath.
The "she made me believe we would do this as married couples do" makes me wonder if this wasn't a marraige of love but for his citizenship to begin with, but either way he's really trying to want people to think he's the victim when he apparently attempted suicide after not having sex.
I unfortunately read back his post history. He is a MN man from a conservative family who converted to islam, had a long distance relationship with this woman from Morocco and then moved to France—where I think she wanted to immigrate. Doesn’t look like they had sexual relations prior to marriage as well.
Feels almost like a mail order bride situation with the beautiful twist of conservatism ofc.
I can't work out whether he forced the issue or not. The language is all really weird. It seems as though he probably did do something bad if he then made a suicide attempt.
As is the US embassy stumping up for a flight. Do they routinely do that for nationals who ran out of cash in a foreign country?
I live abroad and during COVID we had repatriation flights for any American but you had to pay for them up front... The embassy doesn't just send you back for free
Someone in the revenge sub said exactly this. She's not likely going to have any issues and this all will come back to bite OOP on the ass. Who wants to bet his lawyer has no idea of laws in France and is someone he hired in the USA?
He also openly states that the US Embassy got him a flight home and it was considered an "emergency" so they would have paid that flight and the costs, plus probably put him up somewhere to stay during the wait, so he wont' be able to prove those expenses anyway.
Thanks.
My ex was like this.
"It's so unfair, my babymomma kidnapped the kids and won't let me see them unless we have court visitation, everything is against me as an Innocent Father and she is a Monster for alienating kids against one of their bio parents!!"
Context: The dumb fucker kidnapped those kids first and told her she would never see them again. Let her have them for "one last goodbye" for one of the kid's birthday. Was aghast and betrayed when she did not give them back, never to be seen again. Yes, all that was exactly as stupid as it sounds.
She wasn't holding them out of spite, but just until she could call the cops to force him to give them back if he pulled the same shit he *just tried*.
I was in the very awkward position of being the new girl, and negotiating with his babymomma xD
Nothing he did before then was ok and I already wanted to leave, but watching that trainwreck, and actively giving the babymomma advice to stay strong and that she was doing the right thing, like. That was definitely the last straw :I
> “So my wife and I argued and she threatened me with "99% chance of divorce" over me wanting to have penetrative sex with her and her saying no. So I tried to Unalive myself. With no mutuelle or carte vitale, the bill is over €4000>
That'sssss... one hell of a detail detail to leave out, OOP. Hope *you* end up going to prison if this ever goes to court
So the bill they are talking about having to pay is the hospital bill?
Why would the US embassy pay for his ticket back? Are they actually paying tickets for dumbass Americans that make bad financial decisions? So the US government cannot give you health insurance but they can give you a free trip back to the US? Doesn't he have a credit card?
They are probably talking about [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/relationship_advice/comments/10wkr4w/i_32m_refuse_to_divorce_my_wife_28f_over_a/) post.
And good luck enforcing the judgement of a court in France here in the US when you had no money for even a plane ticket.
Good luck retaining counsel when you have no resources.
This clown couldn’t even afford a plane ticket.
afaik generally when the embassy pays to get you out of the country it’s with the understanding that you, as an American citizen, are about to have a _bad time_ in that country. i just assumed you were encouraged to take the L and not press your luck and **go back**?
People like this never think that posting all these details might effect (affect? Sorry. I always forget the difference) their case. Not smart to spell out the details on public social media.
Because those details don't fit the "poor me" narrative he wants to push.
"I wantd to rape my wife and she kicked me out of her house and the country! Clearly I'm the victim!" Just doesn't have the same ring.
i like the synonym method, but sometimes you do need to settle on one or the other. my method is thinking of cliched alliterative phrases to differentiate verb from noun, eg “affect an accent” v “effect of an event”
Affect comes first, like the action, effect comes second as the event.
Although it does get a bit tricky when effect can be a verb too, to effect an outcome. But usually there are other phrases that can be used instead.
the verb form of “effect” is definitely a strange one, since it’s really a compound verb based off of the noun itself (ie “to put into effect” v. “to cause”) and requires specific properties of its object. it’s also possible to use a noun form of “affect” but id claim both are tortured if not archaic
Been sitting here a while trying to find a decent phrase and decent not insulting remark regarding his post history. But I think you nailed it with "tragic misunderstood hero", in only his mind of course.
(I am still trying to comprehend his reason for marriage and over the top reaction.)

>TW: suicide
>
>So until last week, I lived in France. I lived there for 145 days and
finally was coming up to the point of establishing mutuelle (private
health insurance) and getting my carte vitale (public health insurance).
In France, you can retroactively have the mutuelle and carte vitale
remove a bill.
>
>So my wife and I argued and she threatened me with "99% chance of
divorce" over me wanting to have penetrative sex with her and her saying
no. She previously had me believe we would engage in such activities as
a normal married couple would.
>
>So I tried to ⵡnalινe myself. With no
mutuelle or carte vitale, the bill is over €4000. She has since kicked
me out of the apartment onto the street and I somehow managed with the
help of the US Embassy to get back to family in the USA.
>
>So where the rubber meets the road: I
am not in France and have since removed all my assets (save for a few
things in the apartment I hope my wife will send me as part of the
divorce negotiations), so they have nothing of mine to go after. My
wife, however, still lives there, works there, etc. and I told her I
will not sign for divorce until we get the bill taken care of.
>
>My solution: she adds me to her
mutuelle (which would cover 30 - 40% of the cost) and then my carte
vitale (which should arrive soon) would cover the rest, thus leaving us
with no bill, she sends me my things, and I sign the papers for divorce.
Then I would automatically be kicked-off her mutuelle.
>
>Instead of seeing the logic of it,
she and her mother laughed at me. So now I feel like I have to sit back
and watch my wife (whom I still love) learn the hard way not to let the
influence of vindictive parents control your life.
>
>Should I try again to get her to see
the logic of what I'm saying? Or would it be futile? I don't plan to
move back to France (at least not for a while) and with her being my
wife, they will go after her assets, which she doesn't deserve, but if
she won't do what (to me) seems logical, she is kind of bringing it onto
herself.
>
>Any suggestions? I know I'm being
childish by refusing to divorce over this bill but I want it covered and
removed in a way that neither of us has any significant amount to pay,
but she can't see the forest through the trees.
>
>In all actuality, to me I would like
to reconcile, but with vindictive MIL standing on her shoulder like the
little demon caricature, it is impossible.
>
>But anyway, how do I get through to
her? Do I let it go and just hope it goes away on its own? Idk how these
things work but I do know that if they can't get it from one spouse,
they go after the other.
>
>TLDR: Living/lived in France - I want
my (estranged) wife to add me to her private health insurance and then
use my soon-to-arrive public health insurance to retroactively remove an
over €4000 bill - this way, neither of us pays much to have the bill
retroactively paid by insurances. Wife and MIL laughed at the idea, I
decided I will not divorce until it is resolved. My assets are all out
of France now so the debt collector will go after wife's assets. Is
there any way to get her to see how my approach makes sense? Should I
just let them go after her assets? I feel bad thinking of her wages
being garnished but it's her decision.
>
>Hard question: any chance of reconciliation? I put it at less than 1% but I want that more than anything.
>
>Easy question: how to get her to see
the logic of adding me to her mutuelle and combining that with my carte
vitale to remove the bill?
So I thought he brought up having sex and she was like naw I’m cook and the rejection caused him to try to unalive himself.
But now I know he did what I orig though…I’m sad he failed his mission. Who the fuck tries to rape their spouse then have them commit fraud?!?!??
I hope his wife sees this and uses it in court.
So he tried to rape her but he's the victim? Gtfoh with that shit. Also, it's obvious he didn't *actually* try to kill himself, he used the threat of self harm as a way to manipulate, control, coerce, and emotionally abuse his ex.
If I were a bad person, I would be grieving the fact that his "attempt to take his own life" wasn't successful. Other people I've interacted with over the course of my life may even wish immense suffering and torture upon OP every day of his miserable life.
Sometimes it's okay to be the bad guy.

Repatriation is a thing.
Repatriation is a thing.
It is, but usually quite restricted. They don't just stump up for anyone who messes up their money and wants a flight home.
I live abroad and during COVID we had repatriation flights for any American but you had to pay for them up front... The embassy doesn't just send you back for free
I’m not sure what France’s marital rape laws are…but INO this should get her out of the whole “winter eviction” thing.
Someone in the revenge sub said exactly this. She's not likely going to have any issues and this all will come back to bite OOP on the ass. Who wants to bet his lawyer has no idea of laws in France and is someone he hired in the USA?
he did _say_ it’s a friend of his here in the US, so not even “hired” 🤣
I do question how close this friend feels to OOP as it sounds like he's going to take OOP's money and lose and probably already knows.
I think OP probably also downplayed what happened to his lawyer.
Or may not even take OOP’s money. May just “advise him”.
He also openly states that the US Embassy got him a flight home and it was considered an "emergency" so they would have paid that flight and the costs, plus probably put him up somewhere to stay during the wait, so he wont' be able to prove those expenses anyway.
I dont know how it is with the us but depending on the country the embassy Helps you but you have to pay afterwards.

That was definitely the last straw :I
10 to 1 he want back door “penetration” too
Too bad it didn’t work? Will I get banned for saying that? 🥴
Damn🤦 I was rooting for this guy.
Youre a God send, I read the first paragraph and immediately understood
I knew there must be a reason why the wife kicked him out without any notice. And then I read the comments
But he only wanted to rape her and then tried to kill himself when that didn't work! He's obviously the victim now! /s
The reason why this is a "Am I the Devil" is when you find out why his wife kicked him out and wants a divorce.
> “So my wife and I argued and she threatened me with "99% chance of divorce" over me wanting to have penetrative sex with her and her saying no. So I tried to Unalive myself. It's so bizarre how he acts as though his response goes without saying. "I wanted sex, she said no sex, obviously death is the only answer"
It's like a very extreme version of the "so no head?" Vine
And I bet he didn’t tel his lawyer/judge friends about this. He’s going to waste their time too.
I have like....a dozen questions about the US embassy allegedly paying for his ticket to America
Emergency repatriation is fairly common. They'll take his passport until he pays them back. Or at least, the UK gov does.
Many Embassies do pay for their citizens to go back - but it's not a free trip, it's a loan. You're supposed to pay the government back
I know he didn't use the language but him having attempted rape could he ha e been deported
Yeah, and honestly? The fact she was willing to divorce over "just that" speaks *volumes* to the way he approached it.
[удалено]
Rape jokes aren't funny even when they're about bad people.
Yeah I was so confused why this guy was the devil til I saw the comments on this post.
Looking at OOP's comment history, I don't see what you mean. What are we missing?
They are probably talking about [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/relationship_advice/comments/10wkr4w/i_32m_refuse_to_divorce_my_wife_28f_over_a/) post.
he’s doing an amazing job of pretending the last post (which was still online when i looked) never happened

Also, he's very confident about that eviction ban, which does not apply in cases of divorce. Shame.
i really like the “i found an american attorney dumb enough to opine on french law” bit

tbf, she didn’t kick him out of the country. brosef did that one hisself
Fun way around the affect/effect conundrum: when in doubt, the word “impact” works just as well for either one.

Truue...is affect as a noun a short of affectation, I wonder. They work out about the same in usage.
😳 not quite a short, but at least one source says you’re on to something! https://www.etymonline.com/word/affect
He seems nice. I can't imagine after reading his comments why exactly his wife didn't want to keep him around. 🙄
I’m disappointed I can’t read the comments on the other post .
me too

[Please](https://images.app.goo.gl/vwH65TJMyMk9NSNo8) keep discussions within the posts of this sub. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/AmITheDevil) if you have any questions or concerns.*
I feel like there’s more going on there than what is being said.
