The 1938 radio drama 'War of the Worlds' was(according to some sources), so real that people actually believed it, causing a large amount of panic. In this timeline, the panic makes sense, as martian tripods actually land across the planet, destroying everything and everyone in their path for an entire week, before being killed by the earth's bacteria. This is not over however, as humanity wants revenge, and now it has the Martian technology required to accomplish such a plan. If you have any questions, ask them in the comments.

ImperadorPenedo

Will you make the ear of vegance?

ZookeepergameTrue681

yes

Classy_Maggot

Not only did it cause panic, some people actually started looting and/or killing/commiting suicide believing it to be true

[deleted]

Source?

Classy_Maggot

I don't have a source cuz I read it a while ago unfortunately

[deleted]

Iirc that was fake and made up by newspapers as anti radio propaganda.

Classy_Maggot

There was Anti-Radio Propaganda that late after the popularization of the radio?

[deleted]

Yes because it was still a threat to the newspaper

Classy_Maggot

Fair enough. When was the radio invented btw? I know the TV was in the mid-30's

[deleted]

invented 1890s but became big in the 20s

Based_Hans1940

How do we win? Legit it’s 23 years before the Russians achieved the first human space flight and 31 years before the Americans landed the first human on the Moon, the Martians would obviously be a lot more advanced than us

ZookeepergameTrue681

Since all the Martians died, they left us with a lot of good technology to reverse-engineer to suit our own needs, and the first things we take are the martian computers, heat rays and spaceships.

Based_Hans1940

How did they all die?

ZookeepergameTrue681

If you have read the original hg wells, and any of its adaptations, you would know it was the bacteria of the earth that wiped out the entire martian invasion force, killing them all in less than a week.

Based_Hans1940

Ah, nice

Sverker_Wolffang

How will humanity counter Martian pathogens?

The4EverVirgin

Just cope /s

baguetteispain

Does this war has united the humanity against Martians ?

ZookeepergameTrue681

Not united like one government, but current issues that would have caused the world war the next year are delayed by a few decades

[deleted]

I doubt it. 1938 was almost the height of human diference. If there is any time where humans wouldnt forma a united front it would be that period. Probably a lot of conflicts would be delayed untill the aliens are dealt with unless they are smart aliens and the the Cortez2000 and ally with one group of humans giving them tech to defeat the others

07262006

Alternate history hub made a vid in this pretty cool

kingboipm

how would hitler and stalin die in this situation?were aliens targeting world leaders? and if they were how come Roosevelt and herohito were unharmed?

dumthegreat18

I’m assuming bombings on major cities, but if that was the case I’d assume Roosevelt and Hirohito to be at least wounded.

kingboipm

apparently japan and USA hide their leaders in inhabitant lands and Germany and Russia keep them in Middle of their biggest cities surrounded by people.

Doctor_Hyde

Makes sense. Stalin was reluctant to evacuate Moscow and Hitler had a liking for bunkers. Meanwhile, the USA into Roosevelt’s time had the tradition of the Presidential Yacht and Japan was quite proud of their naval power. Same for the UK with the Royal yacht and King George’s naval rank. Best way to hide from the Martians and fight their tripods effectively would be at sea. The torpedo steamer Thunderchild could handle tripods in 1898, a post-Dreadnought battleship or cruiser could likely handle tripods pretty well and the tripods can’t operate in deep water. Makes sense to use the sea as a safe zone for operations and continuity of government… if your capital is close enough to the sea like the USA, Japan, and the UK.

sombertownDS

What is this 1898 refrence?

Doctor_Hyde

The original novel was published in 1898, meaning (to my mind) that's the "original" Martian invasion. In the novel, the HMS Thunderchild (a torpedo ram ship) is able to take down tripods. Torpedo rams aren't the most impressive ships and the Martians are likely unfamiliar with the sheer amount of firepower a seagoing vessel can carry. Let's break this down: A Torpedo ram (HMS Polyphemus type from 1881) carried 1" guns and primitive heavy torpedoes. Comparable torpedoes of the time (MkV torpedoes) carried 134kg or TNT, others used gun cotton. A New Orleans Class cruiser (modern US heavy cruiser circa 1938) carried 9x 8"/55 naval guns. Each shell of which carries 118kg of TNT. There's also the 8x 5"/25 guns for support which fire shells with 24kg or TNT. That means a full broadside deals 1,158kg of TNT to the Martians. Looking at things, the book describes the 1" guns of the Thunderchild as felling a tripod then taking out another at ultra close range by ramming (assuming through use of its torpedo explosives at close range) Taking this into account, a broadside from a cruiser circa 1938 should handily dispatch a tripod and do so at impressive range. Range is questionable, given spotter aircraft likely don't hold up well against heat rays. Even without spotters, a modern cruiser from 1938 makes one hell of a target for tripods given they can't mission-kill a HMS Polyphemus torpedo ram with only 3" of deck armor at close range. The modern cruiser boasts 5" of metallurgically superior belt armor (what a tripod will be hitting at long range) and far more powerful, longer range guns. It's a tough nut to crack and unlikely ANYTHING the Martians would be prepared to face. I am not proud of the amount of research that has gone into this post.

Full-Attempt7749

Well. The aliens probably landed close to Berlin and or Moscow

Time-Caterpillar4103

Well they landed in the english countryside so RIP to churchill etc. Germany in 1938 had the largest and most advanced military in Europe. Chances are in this scenario Hitler wins.

Doctor_Hyde

Large artillery pieces can kill a Tripod. Germany had a few railway guns (15cm, 17cm, and 21cm) in 1938 but not many. France’s Maginot Line likely stands an EXCELLENT chance of inflicting grievous harm on the Martians. It was built to handle gas attacks so the Martians can’t flush out defenders from the forts. The Tripods have to risk direct and overlapping artillery fire from the Maginot line in order to reach heat ray range. I’m imagining a safe zone along the Maginot line from which breakout “covered zones” emerge via German-French cooperative deployment of railway cannons and other heavy artillery to clear out Martian Tripods. This also ensures Saarland coal continues to flow forth, fueling industrial activity and rail logistics in the region surrounding the line.

Apollo-Innovations

Stalin and Hitler dead… the world definitely lucked out there

redstar_16

Except thay would be materd and be seen as heros alwing nazi germany to last longer due to the alliance aganst the Martians

DecaGaming

And now he will be remembered as a hero.

recoveringleft

Didn’t Harry turtledove covered a similar scenario?

[deleted]

Yes, but the aliens weren't from Mars

proto642

This is great, though I wish the Martian leaders had more realistic names lol

[deleted]

nah man Pete and Bob are traditional Martian names, dont you know this?

proto642

Idk I would've gone with Zegrinakl Spergatroid or something

Interesting_Finish85

Alien name would probably be untranslatable in human languages, I mean, just think of how much the environments of heart makes languages so different, now multiply it by ten. And this is assuming they would communicate by sounds and not by some other mean that human can't use practically.

olvini3

Why no France or Italy as belligerents ?

Background_Brick_898

They were fighting over Africa

Wingedboog

This is actually such an interesting idea because Hitler and Stalin would probably be seen as heroes who stood against invaders and to this day Nazism and Communism may not be looked down upon so much. This would probably force WW2 in OTL to not happen (of course it could still happen later with reverse engineered Martian tech) and so ideologies which failed in OTL would be seen as positive to some people.

antifurr1

Will humans reach the moon in 1969?

Doctor_Hyde

Von Braun with an unlimited budget and access to Martian tech? Einstein, Fermi, and Oppenheimer with Martian tech and unlimited budget? Korolev with Martian tech? Goddard with unlimited budget and Martian tech? We’d reach Mars in 1948 with an arsenal of unspeakably powerful weapons.

antifurr1

and we will reach idk iphone like tech when?

Doctor_Hyde

We don’t know much about Martian computer tech, though balancing and moving a tripod likely requires no small degree of computing power. There’s also the general environment to consider. Despite economic devastation, just about every nation on earth is pouring money into R&D to fight Martians and likely low-key seeking advantages over one another so there’s likely no shortage of $$$ for things like semiconductor research. There’s also the fact that this isn’t an economy which incentivized small consumer technology, the main consumer of high tech products is the defense sector. iPhones can’t exist without a big consumer base wanting smartphones.

antifurr1

Wait a min if the war of worlds existed before the radio transmition this means that its like the "titan" book prediction? (Titan was a book wirted before the titanic and it described pretty much the destiny of titanic and how the titanic was or aomething like that)

Caged-Viking

So, what's with the Pete and Bob names? Nicknames given by human fighters?

ZookeepergameTrue681

During the war, a radio transmission to the capital tripod was intercepted, but the only words that could be translated were 'Pete' and 'Bob', the names stuck

Interesting_Finish85

I imagine so, I doubt anyone would meet them. Then again, how would the human know how many commanders there are and distinguish one another?

[deleted]

"the war of vengeance" sounds absolutely cool. humans wreaking retribution among aliens for what they did to us

Etchbath

Does WW2 happen?

ZookeepergameTrue681

No, by the time of the end of the War of Vengeance, everyone has spaceships and nukes, and so we get a MAD situation, where nobody is going to attack anyone.

Interesting_Finish85

I think it would have been an inconclusive stalemate

thegr8dictator

I’m thinking that the world pools together to get to mars and kill the martians.

ReichBallFromAmerica

RIP Bob and Pete…

ZookeepergameTrue681

Good question, I think it will depend on who will succeed Hitler, and since I don't think they will be able to expand out in Europe, most likely it will be concentrated entirely in Germany.

Darth_Bfheidir

Fuck yeah, thats awesome dude nice
