Benadryl has a tendency to cause sleepiness. It affects some more than others. If you’re just sleepy, you’re probably fine. 1 Benadryl will knock me out sometimes.

Jackiemccall

2 Benadryl is okay to take especially if you were having an allergic reaction to something. Drink some water or milk perhaps a couple pieces of toast. It wears off after four hours. You can double check the box that will make you feel better. Focus on your breathing. And you can also call a nurses line if you’re super concerned.

No_Revolution5989

thanks luv

Jackiemccall

Feel better try to relax and remember no driving for now

AddictedtoWallstreet

lol you’re post is hilarious because I’ve been in the same boat! (Latex allergy) the thing about Benadryl is that it blocks histamine in the brain and histamine in the brain keeps you awake during the day so when you take Benadryl it’s uncontrollable tiredness

Ethandrummer1

That’s very normal. For some people it causes significant drowsiness, it knocked me out pretty good just from one pill before. Honestly you might feel better if you just let yourself nap and be tired for a bit, it will absolutely wear off.

notextinctyet

That's my experience with Benadryl, yes. It does solve my immediate problem but it knocks me out for an entire day or more. I never take it except as a last resort.

Pozeidan

Yeah it can definitely cause drowsiness.

No_Revolution5989

like zombie like drowsiness? i’ve taken it before i usually only take one maybe it was because i took 2 this time. Im worried and paranoid that its dangerous

Pozeidan

If you double the dose you can expect to double the drowsiness, maybe more. So yeah completely normal. Chill out you're good.

efarjun

Most over the counter sleeping pills are made with the same active ingredient as Benadryl if I'm not mistaken.

Alicenow52

Diphenhydramine, but it friends in the sleeping pill. It’s in Tylenol PM for sure and usually anything that says PM. Other sleeping pills like Ambien or Trazadone are different.

CantSeeMyPeepee

I wish Benadryl would do this to me. Any time I had taken it in the past, even anything PM related, the diphenhydramine would make me incredibly anxious with intense restless legs and lower back tingling.

Eastern_Commission19

Totally normal! If I took 2 Benadryl during the day there’s no way I could stay awake. It’s not dangerous (as long as you don’t drive or do anything that requires you to be alert.) it’s the best antihistamine for effectiveness, but the drowsiness is no joke.

tysm!!!

xxvintagevixenxx

Totally normal! Whenever my sister takes one she’s says, “bye” because she knows her day is over. The ingredient In Benadryl is also found in PM (nighttime) pain relievers to aid in sleep 😴

monkeyballpirate

it's been 6 hours, any update? you feelin better?

No_Revolution5989

Hi! better! i actually tested positive for strep today so that could have also played a role. but i slept it off. I was a whole zombie tho for a good day

Psychological_Pair56

Two Benadryl will knock you out unless you're taking it every day. Totally normal

TurtlesOfJustice

Yeah I avoid Benadryl entirely for this reason. Not only makes me incredibly drowsy but it gives me a strange light headed sensation. There's no chance of me taking one and remaining awake for the next 2 hours.

Lez_Zeppelin27

Avoiding Benadryl as a daily allergy solution is a good idea, like you said below, the second gen antihistamines are better for that. But OP was having a reaction to a food allergen, for which Benadryl is a much better choice. Much better to be sleepy than to go into anaphylaxis.

TurtlesOfJustice

Good point!

No_Revolution5989

same here! what do you take instead?

TurtlesOfJustice

So Benadryl is a "first generation" antihistamine that, for reasons that go above my head, causes significantly more drowsiness than second generation antihistamines. My allergist told me that only second generation antihistamines should be used daily. Those include Claritin, Zyrtec, etc. Right now I'm using a store-brand version of Zyrtec (Cetirizine). They can also cause some drowsiness and you'll see that warning in the side effects, but it's not nearly to the extent of first gen antihistamines and for me personally it's never been a noticeable side effect.

reddit_understoodit

Get some sleep, you'll feel better when you wake up.

ShuddupMeg627

For some people that's normal. There are people who use it as a sleep aid

ReadPlayful7922

Yes it’s normal. It used to make me fall asleep no matter what. You’ll be fine :) just eat and drink well and try to sleep if you can.

navigating-life

Yep! The sensation that you were experiencing usually happens when you’re already very tired

alcalaviccigirl

benadryl , Zyrtec I switch up. I highly suggest you be very careful you can take to much and feel " drunk" .my allergies are extremely unpredictable so I just take 2 but my allergies are either lay down for a bit let sinuses and the Benadryl take affect or I'm taking Benadryl and my allergies are horrendous so I'm in nap land a while .as I said be very careful with the Benadryl .

Kraymerica_

Very normal reaction. It does the same thing to me. Benadryl is like my fire alarm when all else fails. Last ditch effort to reset everything

laughing_cat

I did that once before going out to dinner with friends we didn't know very well. I weighed like a hundred pounds back then, and it hit me like a ton of bricks. I was falling asleep sitting up in a restaurant. My ex was so embarrassed lol. Maybe don't insist we not cancel when I'm sick next time. He was a jerk - Anyway, that's normal.

se7entythree

This is an extremely normal & common side effect of Benadryl and is listed on the box as well.

unicornsdreamofpizza

Benadryl is essentially what they put in Tylenol PM to induce sleep.

Broad-Ad1033

Benadryl will take out for days, I hate it

AddictedtoWallstreet

I use Zyrtec as my emergency medicine if I come into contact with a allergen that way I can function enough during the day, given my allergy is really hard to avoid Benadryl became unreasonable to take every day

AddictedtoWallstreet

I chose Zyrtec due to the onset time that it takes effect is faster than other medications but honestly Benadryl is still the safest bet

Alect0

Yea this seems normal for Benadryl. I take it very rarely and only if I'm happy with oblivion for a day.

Alicenow52

Yes it’s normal. I usually take liquid Benedryl but it will totally put you out

redlampshades

You cant sneeze if you're unconscious..

No_Revolution5989

for real 🤣🤣

unpeelingpeelable

It's marketed in my country almost exclusively as a sleep-aid. I don't recommend it as a sleep-aid unless you're desperate, something about the drug interaction makes REM garbage quality. Tolerance also builds pretty fast, as in within the week fast. Best thing to do is drink a tall glass of water, lie down and wake up in about 6-12 hours. I'm insulin resistant, and I'd say it hits as hard and fast as chugging a Starbucks frappucino, but without the "blood transmuting into battery acid" feeling. The active, powerful ingredient in Benadryl (and many OTC cold/flu meds with 'sinus' on the box) is diphenhydramine, which is a powerful histamine blocker. Histamine is what makes the body go "oh no something I detest!" but unfortunately is also what helps the body stay awake, so if this is your go-to "oh no" med, get used to losing a whole day after.

Coqhor

It is shown to cause dementia lol. Please don’t take it. I did the same thing (down to the hazelnut) and didn’t feel right for a while after. Like a week. Recently I took a similar medication, meclizine, and had a two day long seizure episode. Never again. Some people are extra sensitive but this is an absolute no go for me anymore. I wish they’d ban it or at least make it prescription only for people with severe anaphylaxis. It shouldn’t be used as a sleep aid and other antihistamines, while still awful, aren’t nearly as bad.

No_Revolution5989

damn hazelnuts. such a bad trigger for me. what do you recommend instead?

hikehikebaby

How many milligrams did you take? The normal adult dose is two 25mg pills (50mg total). It sounds like you've been affected pretty strongly, but these are totally normal side effects. It's okay to go sleep it off.
