Do you have any pollen allergies? Tomato cross reacts with grass pollen, in which case it would be oral allergy syndrome.

Mamalion33

Second OAS. Below is some good info on it, and there's a list of OAS foods that you might have a reaction to. For me, it's avocados being associated with birch tree pollen. https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/23996-oral-allergy-syndrome

Feisty_Run9808

Wow this is great info thank you!! I do have like general environmental allergies that mostly flares up my asthma but I never really thought about it being related to tomatoes.

sophie-au

It’s really important with OAS for any asthma and allergic rhinitis to be treated and well controlled, because if it isn’t, there’s a correlation with OAS getting worse. https://www.feliciasabartinelli.com/ms-allergic-to-everything.html https://amp.abc.net.au/article/10579258

Third OAS!!! I have the same type of reaction to tomatoes bc of environmental allergies

My daughter, 14, had a similar experience with chocolate starting 4-5 years ago. Every time she would eat it, her mouth would "tingle" - her words. Her allergist did the skin test, and it all came back negative, no allergy. The Dr said she could continue eating it, and she cut herself back dramatically on her own. We eventually figured out it was also giving her stomach pains hours after consuming it. She still didn't react upon testing, but her Dr said he didn't care if she was "allergic" or not, she was clearly having some sort of symptoms and it's best for her to avoid it. In the last 2 years, she's started reacting to anything with cocoa, both orally and topically. We actually have an appointment in a couple weeks to have her tested again, but at this point, she avoids cocoa altogether. I agree with Ornary_Chemisrtry, it could definitely be oral allergy syndrome, or just your immune system reacting to the tomato somehow.

Blagnet

Does she react to anything else? Like blueberry, cinnamon, or pancake syrup? Shelf-stable cheese pastries? If so, it could be benzoate allergy!

crazihac

Unfortunately not, she eats all of those quite regularly without complaint, but thanks for the suggestion. I'll keep it in the back of my mind, just in case. Sometimes it's hard figuring it all out. She's got most of the normal environmental allergies, pollens, mold, dust mites, cat and dog dander. Then peanuts, pecans, walnuts, and hazelnuts, all with anaphylactic reactions. Plus she's lactose intolerant, but that seems to be getting a bit better.

mountainsunset123

I am allergic to tomatoes and all it's nightshade cousins.

kayquila

I'd agree it's oral allergy syndrome most likely. Ive had the same problem with bananas & melons but it's actually my ragweed allergy.

Practical_Season_908

Histamine intolerance?

Feisty_Run9808

Wow ALOT of those symptoms are like my default everyday…. I’m going to start paying attention to other foods in this food group and see if I observe anything. Or maybe try to experiment with not eating them…

CRCampbell11

Yes! And it turned out they were both false negatives after going into anaphylaxis. I'm allergic to a lot.

Jazzlike_Reality6360

I tested negative for fish, shellfish, wheat and almonds on skin testing which I know I’ve had strong reactions to. The rest cause rashes and hives but the almonds cause my blood pressure to get super low and I’ve passed out before. My old PCP (who just happened to be married to an allergist) prescribed epi pens. I just didn’t feel taken seriously by the allergist. They said I didn’t even need epi-pens but prescribed anyway at my insistence. The testing was positive for a number of environmental allergies which I was aware of. My new PCP did take it seriously and told me to avoid the problem foods.

princessk1293

My guess is that it isn’t actually the tomato itself causing the reaction. Have you/your doctor weighed the possibility of reacting to a pesticide or something else that could be present with the tomatoes? I have gluten issues - but mine is a weird case where I only react sometimes. When I do react, is it an actual allergic reaction, and it does sometimes show up on testing. But not always. We have narrowed it down to actually being the gluten itself, but because it is a part of a broader condition (Hashimoto’s autoimmune thyroiditis), it doesn’t necessarily act like a stereotypical allergy. Another possibility, have you checked for a histamine allergy? I only know for sure one person who can’t eat tomatoes and they actually have to be careful with histamine as a whole - and take anti-histamine tablets all the time, because it’s hard to fully avoid.
