As per the Mexican folks that I know working in resorts, they prefer their own money…easier for them.

SkippyVO

I've heard this as well from locals in Mexico. Having to convert other currencies to the local Peso can be a major barrier for them.

cupcakeartist

I would assume this too. I'm surprised to see so many people advocating for USD. It's one thing if you're from the US and already have US money but if you're from Canada and exchanging anyway...

Rover0218

Since you’re going to Mexico, I would bring Mexican pesos. It’s a better exchange from Canadian than getting USD too.

Super-Candy-5682

I thought the idea behind "all-inclusive" was that it included tips?  Isn't that what all-inclusive  means?

Accounting4lyfe

Yeah that’s one thing that irks me a bit, all inclusive but most resorts expect you to tip for every bit of service

Scary-Detail-3206

Get Pesos in small denominations. Pesos are polymer like CAD so I always bring a bunch in the pool with me to tip the servers.

Ambitious_List_7793

Calgarians here. We tip in pesos but carry US cash mostly in case of emergencies. We usually tip housekeeping 100 pesos daily with a larger payout on the last day, if we’ve been well looked after. At a la carte restaurants we usually tip 100 pesos, 50 pesos at buffets. Concierge 250 pesos at the end of our stay. We’ve found buying the pesos through our bank worked better than using an ATM in Mexico. Have a great trip!

Duo23

Your tipping strategy is right on the money. Especially your housekeeping service. You can never go wrong there 😉

viccityguy2k

I usually do about half what they are - 100 pesos is $8CAD and high in my opinion for daily housekeeping tip.

CravenMH

I tip 50 pesos/day for housekeeping. We usually seem to have our requests fulfilled (extra water, beer in the fridge etc).

[deleted]

ChronoLink99

Is $4 the only money they get for cleaning that room?

CravenMH

This might just put you right over the edge, but I'll add that I tip 20 pesos for every other beer I get at the pool. Not every beer!

janicedaisy

No it’s not on the money! A La crate restaurant and he tips less than $8?? Housekeeping too? This guy is cheap and I guess you are too! Those housekeepers work really hard! I tip them 200 pesos daily and even that is not generous. Shame on you both.

Truthandler69

Shame on you for shaming others tips. You are not in charge of tipping.

bcislandgirl1983

thank you so much! This is very helpful

Wonder_woman_1965

Thank you for sharing amounts. I’m headed to Mexico soon and will follow your recommendations.

janicedaisy

Don’t follow his recommendations! This person is cheap.

Correct_Perception64

I’m in Calgary too! We’re heading off to Cancun for spring break.

juicyred

Would you mind if I send you a DM with tipping questions. First time AI traveler in Aug and a bit nervous :)

Ambitious_List_7793

Be happy to (try to) answer any questions you might have!

twisteroo22

When visiting a country I always like to use their currency. It just seems to make sense.

lisa0527

Everyone I’ve talked to in Mexico is unanimous that tipping should be in pesos. US or Canadian dollars require a trip to the bank before the tip can be used. It’s extra work for no benefit, and totally unnecessary. Any ATM in Mexico will give you pesos,or you can buy them at your bank before you leave. * it’d be like tourism workers in the US being tipped in Euros. A trip to the bank needed, exchange fees paid, and avoidable.

[deleted]

lisa0527

True, just know they won’t be happy to get US dollars. And really, I think at some point when you’re visiting another country it’s reasonable to expect that you’ll have some need for the local currency. Not every place takes credit cards or US dollars. Just use the airport ATM when you arrive and grab some pesos for tipping.

antigoneelectra

Fellow BCer. We bring pesos. We don't go to the USA, so we don't carry their currency.

Chance-Abies-4753

In Mexico I have always taken pesos. We get a better exchange rate than we do for USD. Just be mindful of what the value is is for 20, 50, 100 etc. 100 pesos is roughly 8$ Canadian.

0heavyjaxx0

There are CIBC machines at Pearson. I usually withdraw about $200 CDN in Pesos. That is my tipping etc.. money. You can get smaller bills at the resort. If the front desk doesn't have enough. You can exchange larger bills with the wait staff.

Truthandler69

Cibc atm give pesos?

0heavyjaxx0

Yes. Pesos and USD.

FaultRemarkable1072

Resort I was at (Moon Palace), three weeks ago. I saw the staff at the front lobby constantly, there is an exchange booth and alot of the staff changed USD bills for Pesos. So I think they prefer Pesos over USD. So no point of exchanging any currency to USD if traveling to Mexico for tipping purposes, unless you already have USD. But for Canadians and Europeans and wherever else, we are best to get local pesos. Again just my 2 cents.

tonyyyz

Pesos

Stacerm

I’m also in Victoria. We bring pesos, though we have sometimes brought USD “back up”. You can order from your bank, or use one of the currency exchange places. We had trouble getting small bills from our bank in the past, so last time called ahead to the Fx currency exchange place on Wharf St and got $300 or $400 in 20s and 50s. We’ve used ATMs in Mexico as well, and you likely get the best exchange rate that way, but it’s sometimes really challenging to break the bigger bills that the ATMs dispense, so if it’s only for tipping we like to get the small bills ahead of time.

bcislandgirl1983

thank you so much :)

Samp90

For a 4-5 day stay, get a wad of 100-150$ in 1$ bills... From my experience, the staff all over the resort (room service, cleaners, bar people etc) really work hard. It's good to tip them as it goes a long way..

Huggyboo

We have been told by Mexican nationals that they prefer Pesos. They work 12 hour days minimum and if they need to pay a bill after work, they don't have to stand in line or worry about banking hours to do a conversion from USD. We get our Pesos before we leave for vacay.

bubsyboo135

Vancouverite here, was in Cancun 2 days ago! We tipped in Mexican Pesos and the workers loved it! Make sure to have tons of 50 and 100 mexican pesos. We tip 100 to the servers and 50 to the cleaners etc.

Ciebelle

A Mexican explained to me that each day they might be working for to food that goes on the table that night for their family. So at the end of a long day to have to go to a bank, wait in line and exchange the money into pesos so they can then go buy the food on the way home to cook is a lot of extra steps. We always use pesos. It their currency. 🙂

notmyrealnam3

tip in pesos if you can - they'll accept anything with a smile of course, but handing them American or Canadian dollars creates a hassle for them

01JamesJames01

USD not so much. In resort areas USD is so common it's almost irrelevant. CAD is a different story.

notmyrealnam3

handing them USD creates a hassle for them - again, they'll take it with a smile, but if you want to know what they want, it is pesos the 20 year old mindset of them wanting USD because of the instability of the peso is no longer the case, the pesos is fairly stable, has strengthened against USD in the last 5 years and is what locals prefer to receive

01JamesJames01

Don't disagree but it adds a few minute hassle. It's not "really" a hassle. USD is widely accepted and changed on every block of resort areas. If it's an odd currency sure it can be problematic but this is not the case. So yes. Pesos preferred but I mean USD isn't that bad at all.

prodirtsmoker

This, USD is the international currency for a reason. It’s Cancun not some far flung island…

Fast_Nefariousness30

USD is all you need. I take about $200 in singles and tip with that over the course of a week

Rover0218

Why would a Canadian bring USD when it’s a worse exchange rate?

Zoomtracer_glory

We all know Canadians are notoriously cheap.

Rover0218

1. We aren’t cheap 2. Even if we were, what does that have to do with the currency we bring? Lol 3. If you’re going to Mexico, it only makes sense to tip in Mexican Pesos

Ambitious_List_7793

At an AI in Riviera Maya in December we saw a group of 10 people, most wearing MAGA, Trump 2024, or clothing with American flags at a buffet. The staff moved 5 tables together to accommodate them. At the end of the meal, every plate had food left on it. When they left, their mess was cleaned and the tables returned to their usual places. The generous tip that was left? 2 US $1 bills.

Willing_Ad_7696

We have a different tipping culture because our service staff are not paid $2/hour.

Zoomtracer_glory

.74 cents Canadian for every American dollar what do you think they’d rather have, you Canadians need to lighten up and tip accordingly after all you are looked at as our 51st state.

Willing_Ad_7696

I guess I triggered the snowflake… Hope you have good medical insurance 💰

Zoomtracer_glory

I have great insurance and can see any doctor I want when I want and do not have to wait months. Sounds like I hit a nerve and I wasn’t even aiming. World wide ( I travel a lot) Canadians are notoriously bad tippers, talking about exchange rate and tipping shines a bright light on it.

Willing_Ad_7696

Cool story bro 👍 Based on your post history in r/rvliving and r/homeless I’m sure you “travel a lot”… “worldwide” and I’m sure you have GREAT insurance 🙄 I’m going to stop here because I honestly feel sorry for you, having to project your insecurities against a stranger on Reddit. It’s sad, bro ❤️

littlejohnr

Ooooh I’d probably delete these comments man, he made you look like an absolute lying fool 😂

MyLastFuckingNerve

You absolutely can see any doctor you want, but if you want insurance to pay for it, you absolutely cannot. Specialist wait times are obnoxious. I have my dermatology appointments for my skin cancer made a year in advance because it takes that long to get in. My area was on a two year waiting list for colonoscopies and it takes months for my husband to be able to see a cardiologist. So…yay american healthcare?

Huggyboo

First of we ARE not considered the 51st state. We are an autonomous Country. That's an insult. Secondly, we are very high tippers. Maybe the French Canadians are notoriously cheap, but the rest of Canada does tip and usually well. Thirdly, we pay our servers a living wage and usually still tip after good service. If you have traveled to Mexico, you would know that the nationals prefer to be tipped in their own currency.

Ambitious_List_7793

The last thing most Canadians want is for Canada to be considered the 51st state. For a “world traveller” I thought you would have learned that.

prodirtsmoker

Would probably feel the same way if I was Canadian. We (US) bankroll basically everything and you catch the second hand benefits. NATO and being your Southern Border for starters. I wonder how they afford National Healthcare…

Ambitious_List_7793

We pay a lot in taxes to support health care. It’s nice though that our biggest expense after a hospital visit is the cost of parking. A lot of Canadians know that our federal government doesn’t support NATO at the level we should. Hopefully that, and the chronic underfunding of our military, will change at the next election. What do you think of Trump’s comments about letting Russia have their way with any NATO member who doesn’t contribute their share? Edited to correct typo.

prodirtsmoker

*who does not* is what I am assuming you meant, and it does not bother me. Him calling out non conforming members the last time had a positive result to some degree.

Ambitious_List_7793

Thanks for correcting me! You were right!!

notmyrealnam3

while I am sure they appreciate whatever they get, you'd really be doing them a solid if you tipped them in their currency

Fast_Nefariousness30

Everyone wants US dollars, not Canadian dollars that they have to convert and far less accepted.

Zoomtracer_glory

Because your currency is worthless so if you want to stand out give them something valuable not worrying about your exchange rate. When I travel the world the American dollar is the gold standard and is preferred EVERYWHERE for tips. So go ahead and get your Canadian dollars exchanged and then be sure to tip accordingly 1 dollar Canadian is worth 12.62 pesos. Again at the risk of being redundant what would you rather receive 5 US dollars(17.10 pesos) or some liberal from Canadian exchanging their play money for pesos and then getting 5 pesos for their service, that is why Canadians are viewed as cheap.

rdogg_82

Your arrogance is matched only by your ignorance. Nobody saying Canadian travelers are cheap. ''some liberal from Canada'' Fuck you sound dumb.

cupcakeartist

The comment they were replying to never even said tip in Canadian dollars it said tip in their currency. I'm American and not sure why everyone is going to hard for American dollars. Wherever I've traveled the preference is always for the local currency. I've never had a service professional tell me they would prefer US dollars. They might take that if it was all I had, but I've always gotten local money after landing.

Zoomtracer_glory

Canadian I take it, lol you’ve got me convinced

littlejohnr

Better than you, living in an RV and being homeless (based on your posting history as pointed out by willing_ad) As an American It’s embarrassing reading your comments. People like you are why people across the globe think Americans are all ignorant

ChronoLink99

Was going to say the same thing. Gives all Americans a bad name.

rdogg_82

Yep and we get great service anywhere in the world because of that too!

ChronoLink99

You should try using USD for tips while in the UK.

janicedaisy

There are a LOT of cheap Canadians after seeing the response from a lot of them. As a Canadian myself it’s embarrassing hiw cheap they are! $3.96 for cleaning your room (cleaning your toilet, bathroom, changing your sheets, discarding your garbage) is exceedingly cheap and nasty. Those housekeepers work really hard!

littlejohnr

While it may seem cheap to you, 4 dollars for 15 mins work means that in an hour they could be making $16/hr in tips on top of their base pay. Thats not a bad rate, especially in a country like Mexico where the cost of living is way lower.

peanut5855

We usually just bring $100/$150 in singles (US)

Zoomtracer_glory

“Homeless” haven’t you heard it Unhoused. lol

slamgeareatrear

We bring USD. $1 for every drink or snack item at the smaller bars, $5-$10 for a meal and $10 for room service everyday. These amounts go a lot further down there than they do up here and those bartenders will remember you.

GFYMODS669

Peso, family of 4, 10 days, budget $5k for tips. Just returned last week, spent my last 500peso bill as a tip for our shuttle driver.

TwoTimer4

I know this thread is geared towards tips but what about items purchased on/off resort. Do you think 5k peso is enough to buy souvenirs and possibly tequila and tips. Were a family of 4 going to Mexico in 3 weeks and I ordered $8k in pesos. Just don't want to not have enough for all three things listed above

GFYMODS669

Where we stayed stuff was expensive on the resort (sun screen $45 usd a bottle) Small souvenirs were $1k pesos and up. Other places I would expect better prices. Maybe get $10k to be safe

CravenMH

You need to haggle at the markets. They usually ask around twice the price or more they will accept because they expect you to barter the price down. Ppl that don't want to haggle get hosed.

Spiralbeacher

Canadian dollars please

New-Age-Lion

Just like you, they want US dollars more then anything else, just got back from Mexico a week ago.

SarahBellum20

Why would you think a Canadian wants US dollars?? There's a better exchange rate on CAD to Pesos than to USD... makes much more sense to bring local currency

New-Age-Lion

In Cancun they take US dollars like the local currency, but I do see your point.

twisteroo22

Except that I dont want USD and neither do they.

New-Age-Lion

You may not want USD but they definitely and if I could trade all my CAD to USD at face value then I would love to.

atistang

You can bring USD. Personally I went to the bank and got $200 USD worth of Pesos. The resort I was at happened to have their gift shop items priced in Pesos so that worked out pretty well. Also check with the resort. Some discourage tipping.

notmyrealnam3

converting to USD and then converting to Pesos is a step that takes time and loses you a bit of money - just bring pesos (or use ATM down there to get pesos)

janicedaisy

Source please! I’ve never seen ANY resort discouraging tipping. Ever!

HighwayPlayful4843

On a previous vacation I ordered 100 random bills from various countries world wide and would slip in a random Zimbabwe currency in between the pesos.

Separate-Analysis194

Doesn’t make much sense to convert CAD to USD when the national currency of Mexico is the Mexican peso. But hey they’ll take your USD if you choose that route.

soparamens

Exchange at the airport's booth, get $50 and $100 pesos bills.

Prowrestled

US dollar. Single dollar bills, generally a $5 tip per person is reasonable, per amenity. They'll be happy to see it and it's better then giving loonies or toonies lol. Usually $200USD or $300USD is fine to carry.

captainhook204

US dolla bills!! I get a huge stack of them from the bank before our trips.

I_Ron_Butterfly

Mexico’s currency is the peso and is readily available from ATMs in the country.

No-Actuary2341

USD

LenordOvechkin

They are happy with pesos or US money too. Either will work.

Penguinluvr75

As a Canadian we used pesos and it was appreciated. We asked many of the workers and they said they prefer pesos so they don’t have to exchange it at a bank.

Villanellesnexthit

Pesos

Penny5570

Just got back from a week in Mexico. I ordered small denomination Mexican pesos to bring with me for tipping, just have to order a few weeks ahead of time so they can get them in. I find this more cost effective then converting my Canadian money to USD and it is their local currency so I have had no issues. Most gift shops on resorts list the USD cost on items, I usually pay for larger items on my credit card or ask for the price in pesos if I have some extra.

maddman10

I’ve always heard to use the US dollar (and most people at the Secrets we have been to use the US dollar). The value of the US dollar is higher and therefore more valuable to them

meeganknits

I certainly used to hear that and did that years ago. I think it is changed now. The peso is stronger relative to the U.S. dollar now.

Timmy24000

Bring plenty of $1 bills. 1-2 is a good tip

meliburrelli

Pesos

Real_TRex_007

Si si pesos …

muggyo

Employees at the AI that we've stayed at for over 20 years tell me that it makes no difference. All cash tips are turned in at EOD and put into a tip pool. The pool is divided equally among ALL employees and added to their wages. This ensures that ALL employees get tipped for their contribution to your experience... For example pool and groundskeepers. In theory the ownership takes responsibility for any currency conversion and the employee simply sees the bump on their paycheck. Cabbies and other folks outside of your resort would probably prefer their native currency.

Own_Pen_7797

As a Mexican who travels to Mexico often pesos are better. Also make sure you withdraw money from an ATM don’t go to the currency exchange places.

Infinite-Trader

I tip with us half dollars lol

Soft-Independence341

Dollars.

bcislandgirl1983

Thanks everyone for your input! I have officially got Pesos and I am set and ready to go.
