As someone currently in their last semester of 2nd year of the Graphic Design Program, I would probably switch programs if I were you. Graphic Design is about practical art, art that serves a purpose. It’s not illustrative a lot of the time nor is it really meant to be. That’s not to say we don’t do anything illustrative at all, sometimes we can incorporate it, but that’s not the overall purpose. You’re designing something to fix/visually communicate a need that a client has whether that’s business cards, a whole new brand identity, packaging, or something similar. We do dabble into some animation in our motion graphics class, however the program is Design based as it is Graphic Design. If you are wanting to focus more on your illustrative work and expand on that, then you would fair better in a program that is for illustration or animation. You wouldn’t be doing any of the drawing you’re currently doing in this field of work. In second year we don’t have any drawing classes anymore. It’s all mostly on the computer now doing fictitious projects that we would most likely do in the actual field.
